Bug description:
  Steps:
  1. Install the ubuntu 18.04 on the machine of Lenovo P520.
  2. Login system.
  3. Plug in an external headset to record and playback in front and rear panel.

  Expected result:
  Output and input audio should work in front and rear panel.

  Actual result:
  Front panel audio doesn't work at all.
  Just output audio working, input audio does't work in rear panel.

  SRU Document:

  [Impact]

  We have several Lenovo machines like Lenovo P520 which have 2 analogue
  audio codecs on them, the internal speaker and front headset are
  connected to the 1st codec, the Rear mic, Line in and Line out are
  connected to the 2nd codec. So far, under ubuntu 18.04 with the alsa-
  lib/libasound2 v1.1.3-5, only the audio devices (internal speaker and
  front headset) on the 1st codec can work. To make all audio devices
  work on this machine, upstream provided 3 patches for kernel audio
  driver and 5 patches for alsa-lib. The kernel patches are already in
  the linux-4.12, so this is not a problem anymore under 18.04 since we
  use linux-4.15 in 18.04. For the 5 patches of alsa-lib, we need to
  backport them to v1.1.3-5, the 5 patches are list as below:

  2b9b3f01 ucm: Assure the user input card name not to exceed max size of card
long name (it is in the alsa-lib v1.1.4)
  4b9297e6 ucm: Load device-specific configuration file based on the card long
name (it is in the alsa-lib v1.1.4)
  b7e56af8 conf/ucm: Add dual HD-audio codecs config for Lenovo (it is in the
alsa-lib v1.1.6)
  181f8e25 ucm: adding the folder of card_long_name when finding verb conf file
(it is in the alsa-lib v1.1.6+)
  81db276f conf/ucm: increase the input volume for LineIn (it is in the
alsa-lib v1.1.6+)

  Some explanation for these 5 patches, to make the audio work, the
  alsa-lib needs to add an audio configuration file and verb conf file
  for lenovo machines with dual codecs, these two files are put in a
  folder named by card_long_name, and the name of configuration file
  itself is also named by card_long_name, this is implemented by the
  patches of NO. 3rd and 5th.

  But the alsa-lib v1.1.3-5 itself doesn't support to search conf file with
card_long_name, it only support searching with card_name, So we need to
backport 3 patches to let alsa-lib v1.1.3-5 support to search with
card_long_name, these 3 patches are No. 1st, 2nd and 4th.

  [Test Case]

  On the Lenovo machines with dual codecs (p520), I insatlled the
  libasound2 v1.1.3-5ubuntu1 and libasound2-data v1.1.3-5ubuntu1, the
  alsa-lib can find the conf file and can parse the conf file
  successfully, and I tested the internal speaker, front headset, rear
  mic, line out and line in, all audio devices work well.

  On a HP and Dell machines without dual codecs, I insatlled the
  libasound2 v1.1.3-5ubuntu1 and libasound2-data v1.1.3-5ubuntu1, the
  alsa-lib can't find conf file by card_long_name and card_name, the
  pulseaudio will drive the sound card as before, so all audio functions
  worked well as before.

  [Regression Potential]

  After adding these 5 patches, there 2 two changes introduced into the
  alsa-lib v1.1.3-5ubuntu1:

  1) before: only have folder and conf files named by card_name; after: has one
folder and conf file named by card_long_name, this folder and conf file will
not affect others,
  2) before: the ucm parser will search the conf file/folder by card_name only;
 after: the ucm parser will search the conf file/foler by card_long_name first,
if it fails, it will fallback to use card_name to search again. So this change
is compatible with old version.

  There is no regression since there is only one folder named by
  card_long_name in v1.1.3-5ubuntu1, if it runs on lenovo machine with
  dual codecs, it will find the conf file by card_long_name, if it runs
  on other machines, the search by card_long_name will definitely fail
  and fall back to search by card_name, then it will be same as before.
  So the objective of these 5 patches is to let lenovo machines with
  dual codecs find the conf file by card_long_name, let other machines
  fail to search by card_long_name, then fallback to original searching
  method - search by card_name.

  [Other Info]

  Since I could not find the alsa-lib repository in canonical, I just
  generated the debdiff with "apt-get source ...".

2018-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  * Impact
  The Ubuntu installer crashes on some machines (seems more often on hiDPI
machines (QHD/UHD etc)).

  * Test case
- try installing Ubuntu on an hidpi machine, it shouldn't hit an XError
+ Try installing Ubuntu on an hidpi machine, it should complete installation
instead of crashing.

  * Regression potential
- the fix is ubiquity touches the code handle uid drop/privilege, that can have
unexpected side effects so we need proper/complete testing of the installer
+ The fix in ubiquity touches the code handle uid drop/privilege, that can have
unexpected side effects so we need proper/complete testing of the installer

  --

  Update: Actually the crash occurs on slow-ish systems due to a race
  condition. It's not strictly only hi-DPI machines - that's just the most
  common place it is experienced.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769075] Re: Upgrade to 18.04 broke the battery reporting of bluetooth keyboard

2018-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please check what the kernel is reporting for the batteries by running:

  grep . /sys/class/power_supply/*/capacity

and send us the output.

It seems to be reporting the battery status of my bluetooth touchpad
fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769372] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS does not ask for action when I press ACPI Power button/key - immediately shutdowns

2018-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The default action is suspend:

  'suspend'
  Power button action
  The action to take when the system power button is pressed.
This action is hard-coded (and the setting ignored) on virtual machines (power
off) and tablets (suspend).

but you can change that in:

Settings >
Power >
Suspend & Power Button >
When the Power Button is pressed ...

Unfortunately no option exists to prompt the user. So that would be an

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1752938] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration

2018-05-06 Thread Liam McDermott
The fix mentioned in #1767468 did not fix this for me (AMD Radeon 7950).
Also installing libegl-mesa0 does not fix the issue.

  This problem is reproducible.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 18.04 daily live. I've tried Kubuntu 18.04 Feb 26's daily
live(the installer in Mar 1 crashes which prevents me from installing it) and
Xubuntu 18.04 Mar 2's daily live. Ubuntu is utilizing my GPU in live cd session
and after the fresh install Ubuntu is also utilizing my GPU.
  2. Reboot into the newly installed system, do a dist-upgrade and reboot
again. Opengl renderer falls back to llvmpipe.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1754294] Re: After last updated libcurl3 on libcurl4, some apps are removed.

2018-05-06 Thread noabody
I'm re-posting this comment I made on the ngemu forums as it is related.

These strings are present in compiled epsxe_x64 (hex-edit).
```
libcurl.so.4.curl_easy_init.curl_easy_setopt.curl_easy_cleanup.curl_easy_perform.CURL_OPENSSL_3
```

It lists the expected soname (libcurl.so.4) along with the symbol
version (CURL_OPENSSL_3).

Installed libcurl4_7.58.0-2ubuntu3_amd64.deb:
```
readelf -Ws /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcurl.so.4 | grep curl_version
  397: 00024980  172 FUNC  GLOBAL DEFAULT  13
curl_version_info@@CURL_OPENSSL_4
  405: 00024800  372 FUNC  GLOBAL DEFAULT  13
curl_version@@CURL_OPENSSL_4
```

Conflicting libcurl3 package libcurl3_7.58.0-2ubuntu2_amd64.deb:
```
readelf -Ws libcurl.so.4 | grep curl_version
  389: 00024700  172 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT  13
curl_version_info@@CURL_OPENSSL_3
  397: 00024580  372 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT  13
curl_version@@CURL_OPENSSL_3
```

A work-around would be to extract libcurl.so.4.5.0 (from
libcurl3_7.58.0-2ubuntu2_amd64.deb) into the same folder as epsxe_x64, sym-link
or rename it to libcurl.so.4, then run epsxe from a terminal with command:
```
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH ./epsxe_x64
```

I toyed with other solutions but didn't want to mess up system libraries
when ldconfig eventually caches the symbols.

Could also use ldd to get same info as hex-editor.
```
ldd epsxe_x64 | grep -i curl
./epsxe_x64: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcurl.so.4: version `CURL_OPENSSL_3'
not found (required by ./epsxe_x64)
libcurl.so.4 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcurl.so.4 (0x7fee19108000)
```

  Hi!

  After last updated libcurl3 on libcurl4, system (Kubuntu 18.04 bionic)
deleted such applications as:
  virtualbox-5.2
  opera-stable
  slack-desktop

  I really need these applications, I installed them with broken
  dependencies, but they are deleted after each update. Is it possible
  to make the dependence of the libcurl3 in libcurl4, and not remove it
  altogether from system?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769372] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS does not ask for action when I press ACPI Power button/key - immediately shutdowns

2018-05-06 Thread Norbert
I posted my analysis in AskUbuntu question (
https://askubuntu.com/q/1032461/66509 ) .

Currently I can state that in terminal session aka `multi-user.target`
(`systemctl isolate multi-user.target`) all variables from
*/etc/systemd/logind.conf* are sourced normally. So the problem is with
GNOME session (`systemctl isolate graphical.target`) in `gnome-settings-
daemon` or something other.

Bug description:
  Hello,

  so I just installed Ubuntu 18.04LTS on my computer ( HP Spectre x360
  15 ), running in dual boot mode with windows 10, everything went well
  during the installation, the only problem I encountered is, if I type
  a wrong password and then I type the correct password, the desktop
  never loads... I waited like 20 minutes if anything would show up, but
  nothing, I can just see the cursor and the wallpaper nothing else, I
  had to manually turn off/on the computer multiple times, in order to
  see the boot manager again.

  If I enter the correct password at the first attempt, the desktop
  loads and everything works just fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769462] [NEW] lvmetad not available during system boot

2018-05-06 Thread Tsvetomir Dimitrov
Public bug reported:

I have got a clean Ubuntu 18.04 install with LUKS full disk encryption and I
experience slow boot time compared to Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10. What exactly
happends:
1. Power up the laptop.
2. The OS loads and prompts for device password
3. Nothing happens for 2 or 3 iterations of the progress bar (the moving dots).
4. The OS boots and login screen is presented.

What I feel wrong and it didn't happen neither on 16.04 nor on 17.10 is
the delay at step 3.

In /var/log/boot.log I noticed these lines:

  WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.
  Volume group "ubuntu-vg" not found
  Cannot process volume group ubuntu-vg
  WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.
  Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
  Found volume group "ubuntu-vg" using metadata type lvm2
  WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.
  3 logical volume(s) in volume group "ubuntu-vg" now active

I managed to reproduce the same issue on a VM with standard installation
by selecting "Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation for security".

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

  I installed python-magic with: sudo apt-get install python-magic (the
  file that gets installed is python-magic_5.03-5ubuntu1_i386.deb)

  However, when I start Python (version 2.6.5) and I "import magic" and
  I then do "dir(magic)", it seems as though the module does not contain
  all the definitions that I can see on python-magic's github repo (i.e.
  the Ubuntu package seems outdated):

  ['MAGIC_APPLE', 'MAGIC_CHECK', 'MAGIC_COMPRESS', 'MAGIC_CONTINUE',
  'MAGIC_DEBUG', 'MAGIC_DEVICES', 'MAGIC_ERROR', 'MAGIC_MIME',
  'MAGIC_MIME_ENCODING', 'MAGIC_MIME_TYPE', 'MAGIC_NONE',

  'MAGIC_PRESERVE_ATIME', 'MAGIC_RAW', 'MAGIC_SYMLINK', '__doc__',
  '__file__', '__name__', '__package__', 'error', 'open']

  What's up? Am I doing something wrong?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769450] [NEW] proper display panel missing, second monitor mirrored

2018-05-06 Thread Ronin
Public bug reported:

While I don't believe the initial upgrade to Bionic caused this, a
series of power outages later (+4 in 2 days) and some possible data
corruption, I no longer have the full display manager available, my 2
displays are mirrored (no option to change) and are running in less than
optimal resolution (no option to go higher). Previously working fine
with "stretched" display using onboard AMD graphics and standard Ubuntu
driver.

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  When I plug in external speakers to line in/line out combo on the
  laptop the internal speakers are turned off but when I plug the
  speakers into the docking station (HP UltraSlim Dock 2013 EURO,
  D9Y32AA) music keeps playing in the internal speakers. Similar
  behaviour (nothing happens) is experienced with microphone connected
  to line in on docking station.

  ### Expected behaviour
  Plugging in external speakers to docking station should turn off sound from
laptop internal speakers.

  Plugging in microphone to line in on docking station should switch
  from "internal microphone" to "microphone" in Ubuntu sound settings.

  ### Current behaviour
  Sound keeps playing in internal speakers when plugging in external speakers
to docking station.

  Plugging in microphone to line in on docking station, nothing happens.

  Major performance regression from Ubuntu 17.10 with i915

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Desktop performance on my laptop (Intel HD 520, driver: i915) used to
  be generally good on previous Ubuntu releases but on 18.04, there is a
  VERY noticeable regression. Moving windows around in GNOME is choppy
  and tearing. It gets dramatic after the laptop resumes from suspend,
  GNOME drops to literally ~1-2 FPS. Logging out and restarting the
  session usually fixes the problem in that it restores the barely
  acceptable performance level prior to suspend.

Title:

Title:
  update-initramfs not adding i915 GuC firmware for Kaby Lake, firmware
  fails to load

Status in initramfs-tools:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The i915 Kabylake GuC firmware is failing to load on boot, and
  generating dmesg errors. The Kabylake HuC firmware succeeds. All
  files exist. I've also verified the Kabylake GuC firmware matches the
  correct file size and md5 listed on 01.org.

  I then ran update-initramfs verbosely, and see that only
  /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_ver6_1.bin is being added.
  /lib/firmware/i915/bxt_guc_ver8_7.bin and
  /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_ver9_14.bin seem to be ignored.

  I'm running a Dell XPS 13 9360 w/ Kabylake on Ubuntu 17.10 and
  initramfs-tools 0.125ubuntu12. Perhaps Broxton systems might have the
  same issue?

Bug description:
  On 18.04 Openconnect connects successfully to any of multiple VPN
  concentrators but network traffic does not flow across the VPN tunnel
  connection. When testing on 16.04 this works flawlessly. This also
  worked on this system when it was on 17.10.

  I have tried reducing the mtu of the tun0 network device but this has
  not resulted in me being able to successfully ping the IP address.

  Example showing ping attempt to the IP of DNS server:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769416] Re: Can't login on 18.04 after entering wrong password

2018-05-06 Thread Szabolcs Andrasi
It's a fresh install, I am not upgrading from a previous version. As a
matter of fact I installed Ubuntu 18.04 on two different computers and
both behave the same way with the login screen: when I make a typo in
the password, I can't login even if I type the correct password the next
time. It just shows the wallpaper / background but nothing happens. By
the way, the above bug-description is not mine: I just converted a
question someone asked about a week ago to this bug report because I
also have the same problem and nobody answered that question yet.

As for the package, sure if 18.04 uses gdm3 then it's gdm3. I was just
following the Wiki you linked me which says that if it's the login
screen then it's LightDM
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#At_the_login_screen), so
that documentation also needs an update because it's apparently out of
date and contains false information.

If you need me to attach logs, let me know.

Title:
  Can't login on 18.04 after entering wrong password

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1764087] Re: Wrongly boots into low graphics mode

2018-05-06 Thread Dave Goldsbrough
Dissapointed by the lack of progress on this bug, I decided to research and
experiment more to a point where I am now happy with the way my boot up and
shut down processes are working to my satisfaction, albeit not perfect.
You will notice I also raised the bug direct on xorg bug service
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106407
and it was the response in there that made me appreciate it was not an xorg bug
but that the problem lay elsewhere.

I decided to experiment with my grub file - some nagging thing suggested
it might go back several months this when I was having problems related
to not being able to disable accelerated graphics on shutdown.

During my problems I had assumed I was using an intel graphics driver -
my recollections and log outputs never suggested otherwise. Indeed
examining > System Settings > Details confimed it was "Graphics Intel®
Ironlake Mobile". Little minor things were though not right. One
example - when clicking on the date in the system tray it did not
display all my upcoming calendar appts from my google calendar.

This is now an extract from /etc/default/grub file

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force apm=power_off"
# the above line is the original from install - not satisfactory
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"
# the above line is OK but the splash moving dots just keep going!
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
# the above line results in it booting into low graphics
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset"
# trying the above line to see if removing "splash" cures the moving dots
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

You will see it was the addition of the nomodeset param that "solved"
the low graphics problem initially mentioned in this bug but it brought
with it other issues like the moving splash dots persisting in every
screen I opened. (I found the process' connected by ps -ef | grep
plymouth and then killed the last one off which got rid of the dots)

This then led me to removing the splash param in the grub file and now
although I get scrolls of info saying what is happening during boot and
no ubuntu splash, I can live with that.

Importantly, I should add the addition of the "nomodeset" param means >
System Settings > Details now shows "Graphics llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 128
bits)". Clicking on date in the system tray displays my google calender
recent entries so all in all I am a happy bunny.

I will leave it to others to decide the status of this bug. Hopefully,
my story may help others get to the bottom of their similar issues.
