[Touch-packages] [Bug 1830531] [NEW] .local domain look ups do not trigger name publication

2019-05-26 Thread Dan Kortschak
Public bug reported:

On my local network I find that with 18.04 network name lookups using
.local domains no not work unless stimulated by a non-18.04 machine
first. This is observed for ssh, http, https and ping, but probably not
limited to those.

To demonstrate this here is a ping example.

~ $ ping pi.local
ping: pi.local: Name or service not known
~ $ ping pi.local
ping: pi.local: Name or service not known

# At this point head to another machine running 16.04.6 and execute ping
pi.local.
# This is immediately successful. Then head back to the 18.04 machine.

~ $ ping pi.local
PING pi.local (192.168.108.28) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from pi.this.domain (192.168.108.28): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=4.43 ms
64 bytes from pi.this.domain (192.168.108.28): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=5.64 ms

4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 7018ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 4.435/5.476/5.986/0.613 ms

After a couple of minutes, the name resolution fails again, but can be
brought back again by following the procedure above.

Title:
Does not handle glyphless fonts, as used by tesseract

Status in Poppler:
  New
Status in poppler package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
PDF documents OCRed with tesseract show black boxes when selecting text

  [Test case]
Run ocrmypdf on a pdf, open it in evince, select some text. You should not
see black boxes.

  [Regression potential]
The patch is minimal invasive and only changes the behavior for the tesseract
glyphless font.

  [Other info]
Upstream is unhelpfully refusing to merge the patch in
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/merge_requests/208 because it's
not abstract enough for them (as it only handles tesseract).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1830537] [NEW] missing max_match_rules_per_connection

2019-05-26 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm currently trying to debug why my Bluetooth Barcode scanner
(emulating a keyboard) with a USB bluetooth dongle does not work anymore
with my 18.04, can't connect it anoymore (it used to work at lease
occasionally months ago.) It pairs, but can't be connected as a HID.

One of the problems was that error message in /var/log/syslog:

Connection ":1.182" is not allowed to add more match rules (increase
limits in configuration file if required;
max_match_rules_per_connection=2048)

After adding

  1024
  2048

to the busconfig struct in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf

at least this error message vanished (while others persist, still does
not work).

However, this should be in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf as
delivered from the package and not require the user to debug and change.

regards

emulation mode) with a USB bluetooth dongle in an 18.04 machine, which
used to work some months ago.

Now I can still pair them, the ubuntu machine sees the devices and lists
as paired, but can't connect with human interface device service (HID).
/var/log/syslog says

May 26 14:44:49 machine1 bluetoothd[1272]: Can't get HIDP connection info
May 26 14:44:51 machine1 bluetoothd[1272]: connect error: Invalid exchange (52)

Since the scanner and the usb dongle are unchanged, it must be a problem
of the ubuntu machine.

regards

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1642767] Re: starting any container with umask 007 breaks host system shutdown. lxc-stop just hangs.

2019-05-26 Thread geez
I'm running umask 027 (set in `.bashrc` for my user, which is copied to
my root session after using `su`) and can report this issue still occurs
for unprivileged containers under Debian 9 (stretch, stable) using LXC
2.0.7-2+deb9u2 and kernel 4.19.0-0.bpo.4-amd64. I can also confirm umask
at container creation time does not matter. Another symptom of this
issue is that after it occurred, `sync` (both the utility and system
call) and `update-initramfs` (which calls `sync`) start hanging.

The comments to the [launchpad
bug](https://discuss.linuxcontainers.org/t/cannot-stop-unprivileged-
container-not-even-kill-9-its-systemd-process-on-host/1079) by the
original author of this issue and
[this](https://discuss.linuxcontainers.org/t/cannot-stop-unprivileged-
container-not-even-kill-9-its-systemd-process-on-host/1079) thread
contain a few discussions with regards to possible reasons this occurs.
Also, is #2277 perhaps related?

It took a long time before I traced this down to the umask, because the
symptoms are bewildering. My original issue:

xchat is back, and Gianfranco wants to keep it.

Also, I see little value in a transitional package or similar when they
can't be upgraded from one to the other seamlessly. I'm therefore
closing both tasks.

If the problem is corrected as stated by Mauricio Grueso (Above) Why has
this not been fixed? His note was dated June of LAST YEAR! This fix
might also fix the MANY other bugs of the same type I have encountered.
I am no programmer so I really don't know how to incorporate Grueso's
fix. Thank you,

I am using Ubuntu 15.10 with
 - network-manager 1.0.4-0ubuntu5.1
 - network-manager-openvpn 0.9.10.0-1ubuntu2

And I configured my ethernet connexion to automatically use my openvpn
vpn setup when connecting.

If I go to dnsleaktest.com, I found out that networkamanager leaks my
dns of my FAI provider and don't use the DNS of the VPN.

However if I close and reopen manually the VPN conenction from
networkmanager applet, the DNS leak does not occur anymore.

So the bug occurs only when the VPN connection is set-up automatically
when login or coming from sleep state. The DNS are not updated to the
ones of the VPN and stays the one previously defined.

So you end up with 3 DNS servers settings defined in dnsmasq after the
VPN connection is setup, one of which is still the LAN/ISP DNS that
causes the random DNS leak. That DNS entry should have deleted.

I don't know if it's upstream bug or ubuntu. I have opened
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-
openvpn/+bug/1520771 which shows a work-around for the bug

I also experience this problem and it is not limited to NetworkManager
configuration with dnsmaq. This bug appears also when NetworkManager is
managing /etc/resolv.conf directly.

Additional info:
I've tested to deny access to 1-st and 2-nd NS servers from the machine running
OpenVPS server and the result was that the local NS server was used, despite
the fact that the checkbox 'Use this connection only for resources on its
network' is unchecked. This leads to DNS leak if the first 2 NS servers could
not be reached.

this DNS issue has some similarities with route-management, where users
want that once VPN connects no traffic is routed via other devices (bug
749376).

NetworkManager currently doesn't understand a concept that activating a
certain connection "vpn0" should prevent DNS/routing via another
connection "eth0". For NM, there are just two connections active, both
have DNS/routing configured (with differing priorities) and such is the
outcome. But the existence/priorities don't affect each other.

As current workaround, you have to ensure that when activating "vpn0" the
untrusted connection "eth0-no-dns" on it's own doesn't provide the conflicting
DNS/routes. Which would for example mean, you cannot specify the VPN gateway
via DNS (because "eth0-no-dns" could not resolve it).

Anyway, this is certainly a valuable feature.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1830516] Re: Avahi Printer advertisements are wrong (Avahi or CUPS?)

2019-05-26 Thread Trent Lloyd
This is a bug in CUPS ultimately, it's driving Avahi using the D-BUS API
(as opposed to manual service files in /etc/avahi/services, this is only
really used for a sysadmin to manually add services, most other types of
advertisements such as printers are expected to use the API to advertise
it).

Marking this against cups instead, you may also wish to consider filing it
upstream:
https://github.com/apple/cups

** Also affects: cups (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: avahi (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

Title:
Avahi Printer advertisements are wrong (Avahi or CUPS?)

Status in avahi package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
First I do not know if this is a CUPS issue or an Avahi issue.

I do not know whether Avahi or CUPS generates the files nor where they
are. They are not in /etc/avahi/services, where I expected to find
them, so they must lie somewhere in CUPS.

I have a printer installed in CUPS. I must use the driver from a
different model to make it work. Among other things I want avahi and
CUPS to show the printer name, consistently unless related to the
  print driver used.

  avahi-browse shows

  Xerox_Phaser-6125 @ Hostname (correct)

Later however in Txt fields avahi-browse shows "product=(DocuPrint
  C525 A-AP)" .. "ty=FX DocuPrint C525 A-AP v1.0" (incorrect
printer model but is the driver in use. Those fields should relate to
  Product and type, not driver)

The problem above I suppose is the "trickle down effect" from how CUPS
names the printer. In the CUPS web GUI I see

Queue Name Description LocationMake and Model Status
  Xerox_Phaser-6125 Xerox_Phaser-6125 HomeFX DocuPrint C525 A-AP
v1.0 Idle - "Waiting for printer to finish."

The Make and Model is not Make and model at all, rather it comes from
the driver used. I know it is commonplace to use say an HP LaserJet PS
driver when you want PostScript , like back in the day when I printed
to a LaserWriter, so I am not the only one that sees this.

Also, I think there should be a proper "representation" in the txt
fields as well icon as is done with AirScan/eSCL scanners
  advertisements "representation=http://HOSTNAME./images/Icon.png"; as I
believe some apps will use this icon of the actual printer. This field
should not be required but optional. These days we connect many
different OSs to Linux and expect Linux to "do it all", and we still
want it to look pretty and correct. I know Apple in some cases uses
the "representation" field. This "representation" field too would have
to tricke down from CUPS to Avahi, as Avahi would only point to the
file at http://HOSTNAME:631/images/Icon.png. So it needs to hosted on
  the CUPS web GUI.

I also recently read that some distros are moving away from the GUI
utilities to configure printers in favor of the CUPS web GUI , making
  this more relevant than ever.

  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1830531] Re: .local domain look ups do not trigger name publication

2019-05-26 Thread Trent Lloyd
The most likely cause for this is that you have packets outbound on port
5353 firewalled either locally or on your network device. When another
host pings the address, the responses are sent via multicast and Avahi
caches that response, and so can then use it without having to transmit
a packet.

Until someone else looks it up, the cache is empty and the query packet
is blocked, so no resolution happens.

To confirm this, other than checking and clearing both iptables and
nftables, you could try run tcpdump on your host and then on another
host to see if you can see the packet generated locally, and then if it
actually arrives on the network.

Note that once avahi has the address in its cache, when it queries the network
for it, it includes that address in the packet as "Known Answer" and the other
host won't respond. So when testing this you are likely best to restart the
local avahi daemon to clear it's cache before each test. You can see those
"Known Answers" in the tcpdump though.

Best viewed with wireshark as it makes decoding the DNS part easy.

As a secondary test, I would suggest trying a different network adapter
(possibly wired instead of wireless, or vica-versa) - you can also get
these problems from weird drivers in some cases. Though usually broken
drivers prevent you from RECEIVING multicast, and so manifests that this
never works, so that seems unlikely in your case, but perhaps not
impossible.

As a third test try 'avahi-resolve-host-name' instead of ping, to
isolate if "avahi" / multicast is the issue, as opposed to the nss-mdns
layer.

Going to mark this Invalid for now, however, if you can show from the packet
dumps that the query packets are really not being sent at all even locally feel
free to set the status back to New for further investigation.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1830531] Re: .local domain look ups do not trigger name publication

2019-05-26 Thread Dan Kortschak
Before I get a chance to look into this later today, I'd like to note
that the network device is not firewalling those packets since a few
days ago before I installed 18.04 on this machine it was behaving as
expected and the 16.04 machine mentioned in the OP is not being blocked
(it is on a slightly more restrictive policy than this one, but neither
block that port). As for the possibility of blocking outbound packets
from the machine itself, this seems most likely, however, as mentioned,
this is a new install and I have not added any firewalling policy that
would block them, suggesting that it's an out of the box setting.

I'll report back on these and the other tests when I am at that
location.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
I was now able to try a few different versions leading to the following results:
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

So the bug must be introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-15.
I hope this can be a good starting point for troubleshooting.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like you made a typo there. The points you list suggest the
regression started between kernels 5.0.1 and 5.1.5:

* The bug does not affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

Yet your original bug description suggests the bug is in version
5.0.0-15.16-generic too, as does your summary in comment #6. Those
conclusions conflict with the above listed findings, so please
clarify...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1422165] Re: xrandr query resets refresh rate to default setting

2019-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic) reached end-of-life on July 23, 2015.

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested
in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the
latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If you then find the bug is still
present in the newer Ubuntu version, please add a comment here telling
us which new version it is in and change the bug status to Confirmed.

Title:
xrandr query resets refresh rate to default setting

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Hi,
I faced this problem after upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10. Basically, when
I switch display refresh rate using xrandr to some non-default value and then
just run xrandr without any arguments, the rate resets to default. I can
clearly see it as my TV is able to show current refresh rate. Also TV blinks
after second xrandr invocation. So steps to reproduce are:

  1. xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 24 <-- TV switches to
24HZ and stays in this mode.
  2. xrandr (or xrandr --nograb) <-- TV blinks and switches back to default
60HZ.

The original problem was observed in Kodi (ex Xbmc) - it failed to
enable (and still fails) 24HZ video refresh rate, I analyzed Kodi
sources and found out that above mentioned steps are indeed used by
Kodi to switch refresh rate. Note that fore some reason the switch to
50HZ refresh rate does NOT exibit the problem, but only to 24/25/30HZ
  (on my system).

  Short summary about my system:
  - 64Bit Ubuntu 14.10 (everything stock, Unity, all up-to-date)
  - TV Phillips 47PFL7108
  - CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4765T

kstart --desktop 2 kmail &
kstart --desktop 3 konsole &
exit

Upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10. Now find that when I click on user name,

Title:
Second display stops working on repeated detection

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
The first time a secondary display/projector is connected to my
laptop, it is detected and works in mirrored mode. However, once I
open System Settings > Displays, the seconday display gets disabled.
Loging out and rebooting doesn't solve the problem. At least not right
away. A few reboots later secondary display starts working again.
Occasioally I'm able to use Fn+F4 to switch between different modes
(mirrored, extended), but it usually doesn't last long. As soon as
System Settings is activated, the secondary display is disable and no
  longer detected.

  Additional clues:
  1) If I leave a display plugged in and reboot, it is activated on login
screen, but shuts off as soon as I login. Pressing 'Detect Displays' button is
Displays settings does not bring it back.

  2)
Every time I open System Settings (even without external displayed plugged
in) there is a short lag and even the moust stops moving for about a second.
The following shows up in the log:

Title:
  10de:06fd [HP Z400 Workstation] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid
  context!

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
My Xsessions are locking up at random times (sometimes mulitple times
an hour, sometimes with days in between).

During these lockups I have a variety of effects not always the same. These
include:
having the display freeze, but the mouse cursor still moves (but clicks do
nothing)
  having the display completely freeze
sometimes sound continues to play and sometimes it starts looping the last
few seconds of sound
sometimes I can use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a command lines, but not always
most of the time I can ssh in from another machine, but not always

If I can get a command line, sometimes it can recover by restarting lightdm,
but not always
I can sometimes recover by using Alt-SysRq k, but not always
sometimes the computer need to be powered off to reboot

There is pretty much always lines in the syslog with statements such as
  Apr 17 10:10:58 pegasus kernel: [74129.721505] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle:
invalid context!
  Apr 17 10:11:49 pegasus kernel: [74178.673977] NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted
to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

with the NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context! being the most commonly
seen one
the need to reboot tends to be with the NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield
the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context errors

I will try to provide additional needed data as requested, but will
need specific instructions since I'm very new to debugging (I have
used linux for about 15 years without major issues until now).

Bug description:
We have a number of different USB headsets in our call center and none of the
buttons work on them. They have Mute, vol up, and vol down. On two different
models the mute button will left click the mouse and I had to add them to the
xorg.conf to ignore their HID input but the rest of the buttons do nothing.
When we use a Windows XP PC those buttons will mute the microphone, turn up
the volume slider, and turn down the volume slider using the built in driver.
I am using xUbuntu 13.10 64bit as an LTSP client.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1244778] Re: Xorg should be way more resilient or at least print detailed information in presence of errors in configuration files

2019-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 13.10 (saucy) reached end-of-life on July 17, 2014.

Title:
Xorg should be way more resilient or at least print detailed
information in presence of errors in configuration files

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Basically the real issue is that whenever there's an error in some xorg
configruation file, xorg fails to start, instead of trying to fallback to some
minimal working settings and/or printing debuggable information about the error.
It's too fragile. By doing something wrong with some xorg configuration file,
you may end up with a system that won't even boot and allow you to fix the
error.

I'll delete the original description as it is not relevant. (I guess it can
be seen anyway in the edit history)

  See also

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1239472
which is a somehow related case (an error in some xorg config file rendering
the whole system unusable, and no clue to the user about it)

Title:
little horizontal black lines sporadically appear

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Some little horizontal black lines sometimes appear on the Ubuntu
desktop. They disappear quickly, and there seems no obvious way to
force the event to occur predictably.

The problem occurs with libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental but, unless I'm
mistaken, occurred also with the nonexperimental branch. Furthermore,
I'm running Ubuntu Classic and was not using 3d effects when the
problem occurred (was simply typing text in LibreOffice).

If the headset-mic still doesn't work, please enable dump_coeff and
generate an alsa-info.txt.

thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
Indeed my conclusion was wrong because I mixed up the versions. The bug
does affect some newer versions although it seems that it was solved in
the meantime before reappearing again.

To correct, I observed the following:

* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-13 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-15 (I used this version when I filed
the bug report some days after I installed Ubuntu on my laptop)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-16 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with an update from disco-proposed using apt-get)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

I conclude, that the bug was introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-13, then
solved between 5.0.0-16 and 5.0.1 only to be reintroduced in the most recent
build (5.1.5).
As you might notice, I am only a user, so I have limited skills. The change
might also come from something else but I did not purposely change any setting
or behavior while I tried the different versions. I tested the sound using the
button in the sound-settings of Ubuntu and Spotify (both after a fresh boot and
after suspend).

Title:
Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi
adapters from working (MAC Address Randomization issue)

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in network-manager source package in Zesty:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  According to

https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2016/08/26/mac-address-spoofing-in-networkmanager-1-4-0/
there is a new privacy feature in the new version of NetworkManager.
This privacy feature can cause some USB WiFi adapters to stop working
while they used to work with older versions of NetworkManager (Ubuntu 16.10
or older).

The purpose of this privacy feature is to get your computer to report a new
random MAC address whenever you connect to a WiFi network.
This privacy feature is especially useful when you connect to public WiFi
networks, so that the operators cannot identify you when you connect multiple
times.

The downside of this privacy feature is that some USB WiFi adapters misbehave
when NetworkManager tries to change their MAC address repeatedly.
The result is that those USB WiFi adapters cannot connect anymore to the WiFi
 network.

  Original report follows:

My Panda USB wi-fi adapter works just fine on 16.10, but when I try to
connect to my wi-fi router in 17.04, GNOME network manager reports
"Connection failed." I did some tinkering, and noticed that my MAC
address for my wifi adapter, according to GNOME, is DIFFERENT every
time I make it forget my wifi settings and try to reconnect. Weird,
right? Any leads on a possible fix or work-around?

I'm running the latest beta of Ubuntu GNOME 17.04, kernel
  4.10.0-19-generic, GNOME 3.24.0.
