  Screen Glitching & Kernal Panic

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I've recently updated to Eoan, but it seems like some nasty bugs came
with it, particularly from the amdgpu package.

It started with visual glitches but it would occasionally freeze the
screen with whatever playing in the background and require me to hard-
shutdown to escape. Attached is an abridged `journalctl -b -1` showing
the lines were the kernal panic occurred. I'll probably attach more as
they occur and if it's not redundant.

   | short version is that something unshared a mount namespace causing

  The work around provided was

   | you can unstick this particular issue by doing:
   | grep default/containers/b1 /proc/*/mountinfo
   | then for any of the hits, do:
   | nsenter -t PID -m -- umount

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1845337] Re: Disco autopkgtest @ armhf fails root-unittests -> test-execute -> exec-dynamicuser-statedir.service

2019-10-14 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

+ [impact]
+
+ due to recent change to run armhf tests in nested lxd container,
+ autopkgtest for systemd on disco fails consistently.
+
+ [test case]
+
+ see test results, linked in original description below.
+
+ [regression potential]
+
+ very low, autopkgtest fix only.
+
+ [other info]
+
+ original description:
+ ---
+
Since the recent few weeks systemd autopkgtest @ armhf @ disco fail [1].

The log is very (very) long and partially interwoven due to concurrent
execution.
Somewhere in between we see this subcase is the one failing: root-unittests
Of this test (which again has many subtests) it is: test-execute
And of this again it is (always):

I'll attach bad and good case full and stripped logs.
-

The diff of those comes down to just:
  1. execute a find in a shell
  2. shell exits
  3. exec-dynamicuser-statedir.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS
  vs
  3. exec-dynamicuser-statedir.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=1/FAILURE
  4. in the bad case that triggers an assertion
  The find that fails is:

  find / -path /var/tmp -o -path /tmp -o -path /proc -o -path /dev/mqueue
  -o -path /dev/shm -o -path /sys/fs/bpf

Good and bad case are the same most recent version
  systemd/240-6ubuntu5.7.

Maybe something is bad in the containers we have for armhf in regard to these
paths?
Was there any change we'd know of?

If there is nothing known, could we force-badtest it to get it out of
  the way of ongoing migrations?

  original description:

Since the recent few weeks systemd autopkgtest @ armhf @ disco fail
  [1].

The diff of those comes down to just:
  1. execute a find in a shell
  2. shell exits
  3. exec-dynamicuser-statedir.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS
  vs
  3. exec-dynamicuser-statedir.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=1/FAILURE
  4. in the bad case that triggers an assertion
  The find that fails is:

  find / -path /var/tmp -o -path /tmp -o -path /proc -o -path
  /dev/mqueue -o -path /dev/shm -o -path /sys/fs/bpf

Good and bad case are the same most recent version
  systemd/240-6ubuntu5.7.

Maybe something is bad in the containers we have for armhf in regard to these
paths?
Was there any change we'd know of?

If there is nothing known, could we force-badtest it to get it out of
  the way of ongoing migrations?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1847527] Re: Backport systemd-journal-remote fix PR #11953

2019-10-14 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

+ [impact]
+
+ upstream commit 7fdb237f5473cb8fc2129e57e8a0039526dcb4fd broke remote journal
upload, because it added a check to verify the Content-Length header, but the
upload may use Transfer-Encoding of 'chunked' which does

Thanks, I wasn't able to access the build log so I didn't see this.

I tested upstream with Linux 5.3 headers, and klibc doesn't use glibc,
so it's unlikely to be either of those.

The best guess I can come up with is that there's something different
about the compiler defaults you're using that causes "objcopy -O binary"
to not include static data in the output. objcopy itself probably isn't
the difference as Debian unstable and Ubuntu eoan seem to have the same
version of binutils.

(But I wonder whether the objcopy is even necessary. syscalls.pl doesn't
require the magic number to be at the beginning of the file, so
presumably it would also work with a regular ELF object file.)

Have you actually tested this using an affected system? I'm concerned
that changing to use by-path naming will result in a different interface
name, for the same adapter, when it's plugged into a different usb port.
That doesn't matter for internal (either on-board or in-dock) usb
adapters, since their device path never changes, but for people with
dell systems and a separate usb nic with this usb vendor/product id,
this would be a serious regression if their interface name changes 1)
after simply upgrading systemd, and they reboot or hotplug their nic,
even if they plug it into the same usb port; and 2) every time they
hotplug the usb nic into a different usb port (or use a usb hub, etc.)

This is a bug reopen from

The original one caused systemd regressed.
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1842651

This issue needs an alternative solution.

Dell has a feature called MAC addrss passthrough[1] that would force usb
ethernet adapters to be assigned with a predefined MAC address stored in BIOS
or so. This feature has been landed to mainline kernel in driver r8152[2]. So
whenever a r8152 managed device is plugged into Dell devices with MAC addrss
passthrough enabled, this driver will set NIC MAC to a predefined one.

And some Dell devices have already one built-in r8152 NIC port. On
these devices, when a second r8152 NIC is plugged in, a Debian
originated udev rules file 73-usb-net-by-mac.rules[3] will invoke udev
built-in command `net_id` to give a persistent name, and that will be
based on MAC address. However, since the system has already
initialized the built-in r8152 NIC with that name, renaming the second
interface with this name will always fail.

While Debian still carries a patch called "Revert-udev-network-device-
renaming-immediately-give.patch"[4] that tries to keep support of
  already deprecated "75-persistent-net-generator.rules" based interface
renaming mechanism, this patch also propagated into Ubuntu[5]. This
patch will retry renaming with a 90 seconds timeout when the error
code is -EEXIST, so the uevent processing will always be blocked in
the last ifrename step in the victim system.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1775219] Re: incorrectly reports package as unsupported if apt cache is empty

2019-10-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

** Changed in: apport (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apport in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1775219

Title:
incorrectly reports package as unsupported if apt cache is empty

Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Cloud images ship with empty /var/lib/apt/lists/ to save on size.
Running 'ubuntu-bug ' will erroneously report that
  the package is unsupported:

    $ ubuntu-bug coreutils

    *** Collecting problem information

The collected information can be sent to the developers to improve the
application. This might take a few minutes.
    .

    *** Problem in coreutils

    The problem cannot be reported:

This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remove any third
  party package and try again.

  A simpler recreate is:

  $ python3 -c 'import
apport;print(apport.packaging.is_distro_package("coreutils"))'
  False
  $ sudo apt update -qq
All packages are up to date.
  $ python3 -c 'import
apport;print(apport.packaging.is_distro_package("coreutils"))'
  True

  Desired result:

The message should instruct the user to run 'apt update' as root if
they think this is in error. That would improve usability and avoid
false reports about apport incorrectly flagging a package as
  unsupported.

Additionally, if the user is root (and optionally if the set of
package candidates only contains a 'now' component)
self._cache.update(); self._cache.open() could be called to download
  lists.

Alternatively it could just check to see if lists have been
  downloaded.

It is a fresh installation and I didn’t run apt update.
I wanted to check if I can update it from Ubuntu Software (I had problems in
terminal), then I run into a problem there, and wanted to report it.

it's either glibc 2.30 (Debian is at 2.29) or linux 5.3 (Debian is at

Title:
Dell system takes a long time to connect network with external dock

Status in OEM Priority Project:
  New
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This is a bug reopen from
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1837700

If this is a fresh install of Ubuntu have you run 'apt update'? If it is
not a fresh install what is the output of "apt-cache policy gnome-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1847896] Re: Unable to shutdown or restart from log-in screen

2019-10-14 Thread Iain Lane
I haven't tested this, but since seb128 pasted the relevant messages in
IRC.

I bet you that it's because polkit isn't considering the D-Bus session
of the greeter to be 'active', because it's not finding it.

If someone would like to test build a systemd with this commit included:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/a2dcb1d78737d3daa301ee63fbdd02837acb71a8

I suspect the problem would be fixed.

The system-network doesn't take into account search domain and then

The same setup does work when using NetworkManager.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1843743] Re: klibc ftbfs in eoan

2019-10-14 Thread Adam Conrad
2.0.7-1 fails to build in the same way on Ubuntu 19.10. I'm assuming
it's either glibc 2.30 (Debian is at 2.29) or linux 5.3 (Debian is at
5.2), with the latter being more likely.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1844422] Re: WPA3-SAE support

2019-10-14 Thread Giraffe
@Seb128,

Sorry to bother you again, but I've noticed some (at least for me) unexpected
fallout from this bug.

Using Xubuntu Eoan with 20.4-2ubuntu2 from proposed.

When connecting to my Wi-Fi network (which is set to WPA2/WPA3 mixed
mode) using NM-Applet (the GUI not NMTUI) it will show the authn dialog
but the Wi-Fi password field is missing.

I've attached a screenshot depicting the Issue.

If I'm not mistaken, the following commit fixes this issue:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/network-manager-applet/commit/1272e7fa2e976ac5db6352302962aba439ce6dd7

** Attachment added: "Screenshot"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1844422/+attachment/5297059/+files/NM-Applet-fail.png

** Also affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
After some user feedback WPA3 support for NetworkManager has been
  finalized upstream:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/e1608030c6614d8dfd86122e9df81fdaad9453c9

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/84a86ce55f1e70cb32217d2c74242ff848db8cd7

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/merge_requests/276/diffs?commit_id=8d4497088fff562773b9c05260e810833bfc9c85

At this time NetworkManager will not associate with Wifi-networks using WPA3.
Tested using Ubuntu Ubuntu Eoan Ermine [development branch] with
NetworkManager 1.20.2-1ubuntu1 and WPA_Supplicant 2:2.9-1ubuntu1.

It would be great if the aforementioned commits where backported to
Eoan before release, so that Eoan based systems will associate with
  WiFi-networks using WPA3.

  ==
  Update 09-10-2019:
So it has come to my attention that NetworkManager needs one additional
commit backported from upstream to make WPA3-SAE work:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/e36c297fd8c6b1b57cd120739cc5ee8eab57aa08

Without this latest commit connecting to WPA3-personal networks will
still fail because of a lack of 802.11w support in the network-manager
  settings.

Thanks for the details, it doesn't seem a release blocker/target at this
point but might be a good update to get in a SRU. It would be nice if
the kernel team would look after things that should be upodated when a
kernel update land indeed

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1848008] Re: eoan needs iproute2 v5.3.0

2019-10-14 Thread Stefan Metzmacher
It's mainly about new features, so this isn't urgent.

In general I think there should be some kind of process that makes
sure certain packages are kept in sync with the kernel version.

It's not as strict as with the linux-tools packages, but some kind
of coordination with the kernel team would be good to have matching iproute2
package, maybe also -hwe and -hwe-edge versions of it.

On my freshly installed eoan system I have two output devices:
  - HDMI/DisplayPort 2 - GK208 ...
  - Line Out - Family 17h ...

When I login into the system pulseaudio always select the "wrong"
one (HDMI) and I need to go to gnome-settings/Sound/Output Device
and switch to "line out". This applies to every login/logout not
  just reboots.

I would be good if it would remember this choice so that I have
  to do it only once.

Or maybe (if that is technically possible)
just output on both output devices by default - this would be
even more user friendly for newbies who will have a hard time
finding the right place to change this (or maybe have UI in the
volume slider to select outputs if there are more than one?
But anyway, my immediate concern is that it should just remember
  my choice :)

Please let me know if I can provide more information. Happy to
dig into code if needed but I will need some pointers.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1847967] Re: oem kernel packages treated differently from generic kernel ones

2019-10-14 Thread You-Sheng Yang
sudo ln -s source_linux.py /usr/share/apport/package-hooks/source_linux-oem.py
sudo ln -s source_linux.py
/usr/share/apport/package-hooks/source_linux-oem-osp1.py

Above commands would fix this issue. Judging from all other
source_linux* symlinks are created by apport package itself (via
%srcpkg/debian/apport.links), I suggest we add two more links for oem
/oem-osp1 kernels, too.

to use 'xprop' just type that command on a command line (you need
'x11-utils' installed) and click on the dialog you want the info from
and it's going to print the info on the command line

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1650634] Re: when installing systemd, it creates /run/nologin preventing all users from logging in.

2019-10-14 Thread Maris Nartiss
Graham, you could be hit by a different bug. (In my case it was fubared
NFS mount from fstab – turns out NFS mounts should be removed from fstab
before upgrades) You are interested in solving "pam_nologin should allow
sudoers to log in" – it is bug #1847902

  See https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2327330

I ran this command via ansible on all of my servers. Then I could no
longer log into any of them. Pretty big bug in my opinion. Please fix.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: Dell XPS 13 9350/9360 headphone audio hiss

2019-10-14 Thread Esokrates
I've had this issue since 2017 all the time. As you can see in the
comments, Kai suggested that this is an hardware issue. He developed a
workaround for the kernel that I tested, however it made the general
output volume significantly lower, see #96, which is the reason this fix
was never shipped.

So it's really strange to me that you guys did not observe the issue
until now. Are you all having the 9360 model or a newer one?

Status in Dell Sputnik:

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Pertaining to 16.04 on a dell XPS 13 9360

  ii alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu5

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k4.4.0-57-generic.

When headphones are plugged in, there is a clearly audible hiss (white
noise). This is present as soon as the headphones are plugged in, whether
'headphones' or 'headset' are selected from the pop-up box.

Using alsamixer to debug the issue reveals that it is related to
"Headphone Mic Boost" - the default setting is: dB gain 0.00, 0.00. If
  this is changed to:

10.00, 10.00 (one notch up) the hiss disappears.
  20.00, 20.00 cause a louder hiss and
30.00, 30.00 causes an even louder hiss with high frequency audio artifacts.

When the headphones are removed and plugged back in the Headphone Mic
Boost setting returns to dB gain 0 and the problem also returns.

This (problem and workaround) has been reported in the wild:
  https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13050843 and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/4j1zz4/headphones_have_static_noise_with_ubuntu_1604_on/

[apparmor] missing 'mr' on binary for usage on containers

Status in rsyslog package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in rsyslog source package in Bionic:

Status in rsyslog source package in Disco:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * rsyslog ships with a (Default disable) apparmor profile.
   * Security sensitive users are in general encouraged to enable such
profiles but unfortunately due to slightly new behavior of the program
     the profile prevents its usage.
   * Allow the program to map/read its binary to get this working again

  [Test Case]

  1) Create a 'eoan' container called rs1 here:
    lxc launch ubuntu-daily:e rs1
  2) Enter the container
    lxc shell rs1
  3) Enable apparmor profile
    rm /etc/apparmor.d/disable/usr.sbin.rsyslogd
    apparmor_parser -r -T -W /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.rsyslogd
    systemctl restart rsyslog
  4) notice rsyslog failed to start
    systemctl status rsyslog

  [Regression Potential]

   * This is just opening up the apparmor profile a bit. Therefore the only
regression it could cause IMHO is a security issue. But then what it
actually allows is reading (not writing!) its own binary which should
     be very safe.
   * Thinking further it came to my mind that package updates (independent
to the change) might restart services and that means if there is any
issue e.g. in a local config that worked but now fails (not by this
change but in general) then the upgrade will not cause, but trigger
this. This is a general regression risk for any upload, but in this
case worth to mention as it is about log handling - which if broken -
makes large scale systems hard to debug.

I prepped the two MPs for the SRU as this isn't the biggest impact fix,
but OTOH patch-on-a-platter and also easy to review for code/impact.

I'm able to connect to my AP with WPA3-SAE/WPA3-Personal using
1.20.4-2ubuntu2 from proposed.

Although I'm unable to comment on the gnome-shell part of this bug since
i'm using XFCE.

Thanks for helping out.

  WPA3-SAE support

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After some user feedback WPA3 support for NetworkManager has been
  finalized upstream:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/e1608030c6614d8dfd86122e9df81fdaad9453c9

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/84a86ce55f1e70cb32217d2c74242ff848db8cd7

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/merge_requests/276/diffs?commit_id=8d4497088fff562773b9c05260e810833bfc9c85

At this time NetworkManager will not associate with Wifi-networks using WPA3.
Tested using Ubuntu Ubuntu Eoan Ermine [development branch] with
NetworkManager 1.20.2-1ubuntu1 and WPA_Supplicant 2:2.9-1ubuntu1.

It would be great if the aforementioned commits where backported to
Eoan before release, so that Eoan based systems will associate with
  WiFi-networks using WPA3.

  ==
  Update 09-10-2019:
So it has come to my attention that NetworkManager needs one additional
commit backported from upstream to make WPA3-SAE work:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/e36c297fd8c6b1b57cd120739cc5ee8eab57aa08

Without this latest commit connecting to WPA3-personal networks will
still fail because of a lack of 802.11w support in the network-manager
  settings.
