Title:
Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery)
  continued polling

Status in OEM Priority Project:
  New
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  My setup:
   - Dell Latitude 7520
   - Dell WD15 USB C docking station

I leave my laptop docked and, after waking it up from sleep, the fans
start blowing. After a quick inspection with top/htop, I always see
/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udev consuming 50+% of my CPU.

After a quick search, I discover that I can use `udevadm monitor` to
check what device is making all this fuss, and this is the output:

  UDEV [92591.827159] change

As you can see, the battery status is being polled every 0.05s. To fix
this, I just need to restart the service with:

  sudo systemctl restart systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-kernel.socket
  systemd-udevd-control.socket

Afterwards, this is the output of `udevadm monitor`:

  KERNEL[92739.612371] change

/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery is now being polled every ~1.5s, which is
  fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 288964] Re: sudo does not work with unbinding usb interface from usbhid driver

2021-12-14 Thread Seth Arnold
ALinuxUser, Xiaofan Chen's example was unbinding the usbhid driver via
the /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/unbind control file -- yours is using
/sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb/unbind instead. You probably have to use the
control file that corresponds to the driver your device is using. (Check
lsusb -t output.)

Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1927192] Re: gdb ftbfs on armhf, testsuite timeouts

2021-12-14 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Matthias, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gdb into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdb/9.2-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Title:
sed 4.8-1 needs patch disabling non-portable tests

Status in sed package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
The sed 4.8-1 package currently in proposed is failing to migrate due
to a failing test on armhf. The patch added in 4.7-1ubuntu1 is still
required to work around this, and the attached debdiff restores this.

The patch has been applied upstream to gnulib

but sed upstream has not yet bumped the version of gnulib that it
vendors in (or more precisely has not made a release since bumping its
version of gnulib; 4.8 predates that).

The patch itself simply disables the non-portable tests which is not
exactly ideal, but given it's what upstream's gone with we ought to
  follow suit.

  libqt5svg5 affected by CVE-2021-38593

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  libqt5svg5 5.12.8-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 20.04 is affected by CVE-2021-38593:
  https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2021-38593

Trying to open the attached svg file will block one core at 100% and occupy
much memory. Depending on the configuration, it might even run out of memory
and crash. This is fixed upstream by:
  https://codereview.qt-project.org/c/qt/qtbase/+/377942

The original issue is public since July 29th.

  [Test Plan]

  1. Install libqt5svg5-dev, qtbase5-dev and their dependencies.
  2. Build the attached project with the system's version of Qt:
 /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qmake test-2021-38593.pro && make
  3. Start the resulting binary and pass the path to the included input file as
first parameter:
 ./test-2021-38593 ./input.svg
The binary should return immediately and without error messages. If it
doesn't, you might be affected.

  [Where problems could occur]

The fix tries to skip drawing dashes that would be invisible anyway.
So a potential problem may that it skips too much. In fact, this has
already happened, and upstream had to adjust the fix.

  [Other Info]

The patch is a combination of the following upstream commits:

  - https://code.qt.io/cgit/qt/qtbase.git/commit/?id=9378ba2ae857df7e

  libqt5svg5 5.12.8-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 20.04 is affected by CVE-2021-38593:
  https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2021-38593

Trying to open the attached svg file will block one core at 100% and occupy
much memory. Depending on the configuration, it might even run out of memory
and crash. This is fixed upstream by:
  https://codereview.qt-project.org/c/qt/qtbase/+/377942

The original issue is public since July 29th.

  [Test Plan]

  1. Install libqt5svg5-dev, qtbase5-dev and their dependencies.
  2. Build the attached project with the system's version of Qt:
 /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qmake test-2021-38593.pro && make

These are needed for 20.04.4 images.

  [Test case]

Boot a daily image, see that it still has the necessary stack
  installed and working.

  [What could go wrong]

libdrm: adds some new api, no changes to old stuff

llvm-13: a new package, no regression potential on it's own

mesa: a new major release, but we'll pull the final stable release of
21.2.x series, so there shouldn't be any regressions left at that
  point

xserver: a new point-release, 1.20.x series is in deep maintenance
mode, so there should be little chance of breakage

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1650688] Re: timedatectl set-timezone fails on UC16

2021-12-14 Thread Ratchanan Srirattanamet
Test result on Focal (245.4-4ubuntu3.14):
- Normal environment: Tested on my desktop. timedatectl output is correct.
Setting the timezone works, and doesn't put the link inside /etc/writable/.
- System-image environment (UBports image): timedatectl output is correct.
Setting timezone works; readlink -f /etc/localtime points to an existing file.
- Ubuntu Core environment: test with snapcore/core20 commit 2d970050.
focal-proposed is enabled and src:systemd is pinned in overlay. timedatectl
output is correct. Setting timezone works; readlink -f /etc/localtime points to
an existing file.

Test result on Bionic (237-3ubuntu10.53):
- Normal environment: Tested in an LXD container. timedatectl output is
correct. Setting the timezone works, and doesn't put the link inside
/etc/writable/.
- Ubuntu Core environment: test with snapcore/core18 commit b8ad5ed4.
bionic-proposed is enabled and src:systemd is pinned in overlay. timedatectl
output is correct. Setting timezone works; readlink -f /etc/localtime points to
an existing file.
- System-image enviroment: We at UBports doesn't have a port of Ubuntu Touch
based on Bionic, and as such I cannot test in this environment.

Note: in Ubuntu Core environments, timedatectl.real is used to test
timedated instead of the wrapper.

Note: according to [1], seems like verification-needed* has to be left
as-is until another positive testimony appears or the test is done by an
SRU verification team member.

Oh, BTW, I looked at the autopkgtests failure earlier. One of the

seems to be gone by now though.

Bug description:
  SRU
  ===

  [Impact]

   * The bug prevents timedated from recognizing and correctly set the
system's timezone when running Ubuntu Core 16, 18 and 20.

   * This causes by timedated fails to take Ubuntu Core's /etc/writable
  redirection into account.

   * The recognizing part is fixed by making the code take writable
  redirection into account.

   * The set part is fixed by making the code link to the absolute path
  instead of a relative one.

   * Currently core snaps worked around the set part by providing a
wrapper script which re-create /etc/writable/localtime afterward.
However this does not cover DBus users.

  [Test Plan]

   * On classics systems: ensure the proposed systemd package is installed.
On Ubuntu Core systems: build a new core snap including proposed package,
and install it. Replaces timedatectl with timedatectl.real to test skipping the
wrapper.

(Note that one can simulate core snap's /etc/writable redirection by
running this image creation hook [1] on the system.)

  [1] https://git.launchpad.net/livecd-rootfs/tree/live-build/ubuntu-
  core/hooks/08-etc-writable.chroot?h=ubuntu/focal

   * On freshly boot system: query the timezone using `timedatectl`. The
timezone should corresponds to `readlink -f /etc/localtime` and does
  not show `n/a`.

   * Set a new timezone: `sudo timedatectl set-timezone Asia/Bangkok`.
`readlink -f /etc/localtime` should points to an existing file.

   * Run `sudo systemctl restart systemd-timedated.service`. Then, query
the timezone again: `timedatectl`. It should show the previously set
  timezone and not `n/a`.

   * Run `sudo systemctl status systemd-timedated.service`. This should
show no sign of timedated crashing.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * It's possible that the redirection handling code will be sub-par
and causes crash. However, it's not likely because the similar pieces
of code is in the previous patch since Ubuntu 16.04.

   * If it does: the patched `get_timezone()` function is used in 2
places: the networkd's DHCP server [3] and the timedated itself.

     - Networkd is used primarily on servers where NetworkManage is
absent. It's possible that this patch causes the user to loss access
to the server due to networkd crash when setting up network
interfaces, and requires physical access to fix. However, the code
path is executed when DHCP is enabled only. I think it's not common
for users to have networkd's DHCP server enabled: the feature seems to
gear towards desktop users wanting to share internet connection, and
in those cases they're more likely to use NetworkManager.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1954762] Re: When selecting or navigating text with CTRL + LEFT ARROW or RIGHT, or even just mouse clicking within text, the cursor jumps backwards and forwards erratically

2021-12-14 Thread Adam Bishop
On 100% scaling it is certainly less noticeable, though the cursor
sometimes appears slightly moved to the right of where it actually is.
The screen resolution I am using is (and always has been) 3000x2000.
Maybe it has something to do with this less common screen ratio.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1954814] [NEW] systemd.resolved with split domains sends DNS requests to the wrong interface

LIBPROXY.GLB.MIT.EDU
is by default sent to the nameservers of Link 3 (e.g. 18.0.70.160) but via Link

This request is refused, presumably because it is seen by those nameservers as

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1954762] Re: When selecting or navigating text with CTRL + LEFT ARROW or RIGHT, or even just mouse clicking within text, the cursor jumps backwards and forwards erratically

2021-12-14 Thread Adam Bishop
With fractional scaling at 150%, it occurs only after some time. On a
fresh reboot it isn't apparent, but it gradually gets worse when
manipulating text. It's as if some error accumulates with time. After a
while it becomes really annoying when working with text. The cursor
position is correct, but often isn't where you see it. The cursor may
appear at the end of a word while you are actually editing the beginning
of the word.

appeared at these scalings, which makes me suspect it is a problem with
fractional scaling. It's a new problem, as, about a month ago, there was
no such problem with the same fractional scaling - I have always
preferred 150% on this system.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1950214] Re: raspi 64 bit Impish image fails update-initramfs with OOM on zstd

2021-12-14 Thread Dave Jones
Just to clarify, while gzip may be preferable this shouldn't prevent the
lz4 fix from landing. It's a "good enough" workaround for a bug that
prevents people from running apt-upgrade (which is far more important
than "choice of compression algorithm").

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1950214] Re: raspi 64 bit Impish image fails update-initramfs with OOM on zstd

2021-12-14 Thread Dave Jones
Some further research on this [1] suggests gzip may be a preferable
choice on the smaller platforms (lower memory usage, and better
compression anyway), plus this would alleviate the need for including
lz4 in the images.

I need to do some further analysis of the decompression to see if it is
still suitable there too.

Bug description:
  * Impact
The google contacts integration with the GNOME component will stop working
since it relies on an API which is going to be shutdown

  * Testcase
  - use evolution
  - add a google account
  - go the contacts section

The contacts stored on the google account should be listed, no error
  should be displayed

  * Regression potential
The patch changes the google contact backend so any potential issue is likely
to be with contacts integration.

I opened Evolution today and a red banner appeared on top with the
  following message:

  > Failed to connect address book “ : Contacts”

  > Invalid request URI or header, or unsupported nonstandard parameter:
Contacts API is being deprecated. Migrate to People API to retain
programmatic access to Google Contacts. See
  https://developers.google.com/people/contacts-api-migration.

I found the upstream bug report for this[0], which references the commit[1]
that fixes it.
However, that commit is in release 3.42.0, whereas Ubuntu 21.10 currently has
3.40.4-1. Is it possible to backport this commit so that Evolution will
continue to work properly?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944409] Re: Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery) continued polling

2021-12-14 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
The issue is first found on other platform during enablement, and the
fix is landed in BIOS. Latitude 7520 has no problem with the BIOS
version we certified, however, the regression should be caused by BIOS
upgrade. Therefore, I assume the latest BIOS should contain fix for it.
As I know, the issue should be observed whenever adapter is attached, if
you can't see it, the issue should be fixed in the latest BIOS.

You can still monitor few days or do whatever experiment you'd like to
do, until you think the issue is indeed fixed.

Again, thanks for reporting the issue.

As you can see, the battery is now being polled every ~1.5s, which is
  fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944409] Re: Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery) continued polling

2021-12-14 Thread Jean
After first reboot with BIOS 1.12.2 all seems fine, the update seems
even to have made the process of hooking up the docking station and
activating the external monitors faster.

After first sleep and wakeup, no battery pinging that I can see with
udevadm monitor, not even at a slow pace (but the battery is more than
full).

Should I retry during battery recharge?

I leave my laptop docked and, after waking it up from sleep, the fans
start blowing. After a quick inspection with top/htop, I always see
/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udev consuming 50+% of my CPU.

After a quick search, I discover that I can use `udevadm monitor` to
check what device is making all this fuss, and this is the output:

  UDEV [92591.827159] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery status is being polled every 0.05s. To fix
this, I just need to restart the service with:

  sudo systemctl restart systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-kernel.socket
  systemd-udevd-control.socket

Afterwards, this is the output of `udevadm monitor`:

  KERNEL[92739.612371] change

/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery is now being polled every ~1.5s, which is
  fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944409] Re: Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery) continued polling

2021-12-14 Thread Jean
#7 output was already attached there, just grepped for brevity. The
first lines where confusing me though, I've now upgraded the system BIOS
from 1.6.1 to 1.12.2. 1.13 seems available on the official site, I'll
report back ASAP on the results of the upgrade.

Title:
Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery)

I leave my laptop docked and, after waking it up from sleep, the fans
start blowing. After a quick inspection with top/htop, I always see
/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udev consuming 50+% of my CPU.

After a quick search, I discover that I can use `udevadm monitor` to
check what device is making all this fuss, and this is the output:

  UDEV [92591.827159] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery status is being polled every 0.05s. To fix
this, I just need to restart the service with:

  sudo systemctl restart systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-kernel.socket
  systemd-udevd-control.socket

Afterwards, this is the output of `udevadm monitor`:

  KERNEL[92739.612371] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery is now being polled every ~1.5s, which is
  fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1654627] Re: Windows Rearrange and Resize without User Interactions

2021-12-14 Thread Paul White
We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all
reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago
and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) reached end-of-life on April 29, 2021.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported when
using a currently supported version of Ubuntu? Please let us know if you
do otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days
time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.

Title:
Windows Rearrange and Resize without User Interactions

Status in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  !What I expected to happen

Windows stay in the same place with the same dimensions

  !What happenes (happens) instead

Open windows will be re-arranged. Some will be resized, others
maximized and some hidden. If workspaces are enabled, some windows
will be moved to a different workspace.

Some of the ways to reproduce this:
  * with workspaces enabled, merely switching workspaces (often but not always)
  * with or without workspaces enabled, if the machine goes to sleep/suspend

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  Release: 16.04

Problem reproduced on multiple machines less than a year old:
  * System76 Lemur with external Dell monitor +
  * 2016 HP Spectre x360 with a standard install of Ubuntu) with no external
display

Frequency: very (essentially any time I'm away from a machine for more
  than about ten minutes).

  !Attempted Solutions

  * Disable all hot corners/edges, etc. on both machines
  * turned off the Lemur's internal display (the psuedo disable in System
Settings > Display).
  * turned off workspaces on Lemur

The only noticable difference was that it reduced the places I had to
hunt for the windows I need to move and resize to begin work again.

e.g. put my Development environment back in working order.

Title:
  display settings randomly reset

Status in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I usually connect an external monitor to my laptop. I had it set up
(System Settings->Displays) so that the laptop's built-in monitor is
turned off, and the external monitor is the only active one (of
course, when I unplug the external monitor, the builtin one turns on
automatically, and it turns off when I plug in the external monitor
again). I have been using this configuration for ages and it usually
gets remembered across boots, as expected.

Today I booted and the two monitors were both turned on, acting as an
extended desktop. Unplugging and plugging the monitor again did not
fix the issue. I had to manually edit the settings to put them as they
  were before.

Title:
no screen turned on after resume from hibernation

Status in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  - I connected an external monitor to my laptop through the HDMI port
  - my display settings are set to use only the external monitor when it is
connected, so the laptop's builtin screen was turned off
  - I hibernated
  - I brought my laptop home, connected it to another external monitor through
the VGA port, and resumed from hibernation

Expected: the external monitor should turn on. If no external monitor
is connected, then the builtin should turn on. Whenever a monitor is
available, it must be made sure that at least one monitor is ALWAYS
  turned on no matter what.

Observed: neither the builtin NOR the external monitor turned on. This is SO
FUCKING STUPID. Both screens were turned off.
Additionally, even unplugging and plugging the monitor (several times) did
nothing. Which is even more retarded.

I could verify that the system was actually up and running by hitting
CTRL+ALT+T (to open a terminal) and blindly typing "sudo suspend" and
entering the password: the computer actually suspended. Even after
resuming from suspend, no screen turned on.

I had no way to recover and I was forced to shut down, losing all my
  unsaved data.

This does NOT always happen, but this is not the first time either. It seems
to be random.

SystemSettings doesn't enable nouveau but says it does

Status in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This is a system that has been upgraded to new versions of ubuntu many
times. Recently I switched display drivers to nouveau from nvidia-331.

Upon rebooting, I'm stuck in 640x480. SystemSettings says I'm using
nouveau, but actually, I'm using VESA. This is because there are some
leftover files in modprobe.d/ that are blacklisting nouveau.

I think systemsettings should probably check if nouveau is in use
before saying it is, and remove blacklists against nouveau when it is
  installing it!

  grep nouveau /etc/modprobe.d/* --> http://paste.ubuntu.com/7448926/

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1952599] Re: virt: Support detection for ARM64 Hyper-V guests (fixed upstream)

2021-12-14 Thread Gauthier Jolly
Hi there,

I used this[0] script to test the different series. The most relevant
parts of it are those parameters for qemu:

-smbios type=0,vendor='Hyper-V test',version=1.2.3 \
-smbios
type=1,manufacturer=t1manufacturer,product=t1product,version=t1version,serial=t1serial,uuid=----,sku=t1sku,family=t1family
 \

You can read more about them here[1]. In short, it configures the DMI
table as follows:

ubuntu@impish:~$ cat /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name
t1product
ubuntu@impish:~$ cat /sys/class/dmi/id/sys_vendor
t1manufacturer
ubuntu@impish:~$ cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_vendor
Hyper-V test
ubuntu@impish:~$ cat /sys/class/dmi/id/product_version
t1version

Thus, the old systemd should not detect any virt ("none") and the new
one should detect "microsoft"[2].

Test results:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944409] Re: Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery) continued polling

Can you try $ fwupdmgr get-updates to see if you can see the latest
firmware in LVFS? or attach your output here.

Also, you can always get latest BIOS here
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-in/product-
support/product/latitude-15-7520-laptop/drivers, sometimes it is newer
than BIOS in LVFS.

Title:
Systemd uses CPU after wakeup due to power_supply BAT0 (battery)
  continued polling

Status in OEM Priority Project:
  New
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  My setup:
   - Dell Latitude 7520
   - Dell WD15 USB C docking station
   - Ubuntu 20.04.3
   - systemd 245.4-4ubuntu3.13

I leave my laptop docked and, after waking it up from sleep, the fans
start blowing. After a quick inspection with top/htop, I always see
/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udev consuming 50+% of my CPU.

After a quick search, I discover that I can use `udevadm monitor` to
check what device is making all this fuss, and this is the output:

  UDEV [92591.827159] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

  UDEV [92592.356577] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery status is being polled every 0.05s. To fix
this, I just need to restart the service with:

  sudo systemctl restart systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-kernel.socket
  systemd-udevd-control.socket

Afterwards, this is the output of `udevadm monitor`:

  KERNEL[92739.612371] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)
  UDEV [92739.646888] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)
  KERNEL[92741.076823] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)
  UDEV [92741.099370] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)
  KERNEL[92742.539438] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)
  UDEV [92742.573812] change
/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 (power_supply)

As you can see, the battery is now being polled every ~1.5s, which is
  fine.
