[Touch-packages] [Bug 1720039] Re: The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem

2022-08-11 Thread Heinrich Schuchardt
I marked the bug report as incomplete as it does not contain enough
information to reproduce it.

It is unclear which code you try to compile.
It is unclear on which architecture and distribution you are experiencing the
problems.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1971523] Re: Static build does not work for libmnl (-lmnl)

2022-08-11 Thread Michał Małoszewski
Hi Lars,

As you probably know, that bug has been fixed in kinetic. Therefore, I might
prepare backporting and upload changes into Jammy.
The bug heat measure is low and I need additional data whether there are others
affected by that bug. The process of backporting (SRU) bears the risk so impact
on users is the additional factor which might convince the SRU team to backport
it. So the more people affected by it, the better.

I would like to ask you then to test the changes that would be made by
backporting fix according to the steps mentioned in the SRU bug report
that would be prepared.

  [Original Report]
  My program uses both -lmnl and -lnetfilter_queue and in Ubuntu 20.04 the
-lnetfilter_queue did not work and -lmnl worked for static builds. In Ubuntu
22.04 the problem is reversed, -lnetfilter_queue works but -lmnl doesn't for
static builds. This is very awkward during the transition 20.04->22.04 when
both should be supported.

  I compensated in Ubuntu 20.04 by building netfilter_queue locally;

  On an Ubuntu 22.04 desktop system created using the current installation
image without enabling package updates over the network, installing the package
libudev1 results in a large number of critical packages being removed and
rendering the system essentially unusable.

  [Test plan]
  Comprehensive regression test suite validating a full solver dump with the
issue is run as autopkgtest.

  [Where problems could occur]
  We could break other things from resolving. The solver is a bit finicky.
Hopefully this is isolated enough.

  [Other info]

  https://github.com/tfoote/udevdebug/blob/main/Dockerfile is a Dockerfile
which also demonstrates the issue.
  Building the image, which will install udev 249.11-0ubuntu3 and init 1.62,
and then running `apt install libudev1` in the generated image results in

  The following packages will be REMOVED:
    libnss-systemd libpam-systemd systemd-timesyncd udev
  The following packages will be upgraded:
    libudev1

  This is completely prevented by ensuring that updates are installed
  from the jammy-updates repository before installing any additional
  packages and that is almost certainly the correct thing to do. But
  this is a punishing result for such a mistake.

  I would expect the installation to either force the upgrade of the
  other systemd packages or refuse to install libudev1 at the incorrect
  version relative to the other systemd packages until the system is
  upgraded.

  We found this out via a user report for ROS 2 Humble which is
  releasing on top of Ubuntu 22.04 next week:

  Origin:

https://github.com/openssh/openssh-portable/commit/53ea05e09b04fd7b6dea66b42b34d65fe61b9636

  [Test Plan]

  Make a container for testing:

  First option:
  $ lxc launch images:ubuntu/bionic focal-test
  $ lxc shell focal-test

  Simply install the openssh package using ‘apt install’ and check both
ssh_config.5 and sshd_config.5 files. You should be able to spot the ‘ssh_rsa’
in these files.

  [Where problems could occur]

  Any code change might change the behavior of the package in a specific
  situation and cause other errors.

  Next things which might cause regression are new dependencies which
  might not align and it is obvious the dependencies are upgraded and it
  might be a problem, but it is really unlikely.

  Even none of the rather generic cases above does apply here as we only
  change non-functional content in the form of the man page; Therefore
  the only risk is out of re-building the package which could pick up
  something from e.g. a changed toolchain.

  [Other Info]

  Fixing this is nice for the users, but OTOH very low severity and would cause
a package download and update on almost every Ubuntu in the world. Therefore we
will mark this as block-proposed and keep it in focal-proposed so that a later
real update (security or functional) will pick this up from -proposed and then
fix it in the field for real.

  original
  report---

  The release of OpenSSH 8.2 has removed `ssh-rsa` from the default list
  of CACertificateAlgorithms. However the latest `openssh-client` still
  ships the man page for ssh_config(5) that contains the following
  description:

   CASignatureAlgorithms
   Specifies which algorithms are allowed for signing of
certificates
   by certificate authorities (CAs). The default is:

ecdsa-sha2-nistp256,ecdsa-sha2-nistp384,ecdsa-sha2-nistp521,
     ssh-ed25519,rsa-sha2-512,rsa-sha2-256,ssh-rsa

   ssh(1) will not accept host certificates signed using algorithms
   other than those specified.

  As far as I am concerned, `ssh-rsa` should be dropped from the list so
  as to match the behavior of ssh(1).

Bug description:
  Running Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. Evolution v3.44.1-0ubuntu1

  settings imported from an earlier version on another computer.

  When composing an email, if the process takes long enough an autosave
  file is created as ~/.local/share/evolution/.evolution-
  composer.autosave-xx ("xx" is a random 6 character string).
  When the email is successfully sent, the autosave file SHOULD be
  deleted. It's not. When evolution is shut down and restarted I'm asked
  if I want to recover an unfinished email. Answering No to this will
  delete the autosave file, but otherwise it persists and the recovery
  query recurs the next time I open evolution.

  Other people are having the same issue, see
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1972. The Gnome
  people aren't dealing with it, perhaps considering it a distro-
  specific bug.

  On a system used by many people this is a potential security issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1615381] Re: apt-get autoremove may remove current kernel

2022-08-11 Thread Julian Andres Klode
@Jarno OK I was wrong, new apt pulls in new libapt-pkg5.0. What happens
instead is that the cache built by the old version does not include
information about available kernels, we essentially need to bump the
cache minor version, if we can do that, I don't know, I lost track of
what major version is what version.

Later versions embed the apt version into the cache hash so they always
rebuilt after an apt upgrade.

  APT will try and fail to remove the currently running kernel, when booted
into an older kernel that is not protected. May wreak some havoc if mixed with
other operations to the point that apt goes weird and needs manual fixing up.

  [Test case]
  For the SRUs we have included an automated test case that starts with an
empty autoremove config file, and then checks that the running kernel is
protected at runtime.

  You can also test manually, but it's not necessary:

  - Install new kernel
  - Reboot into kernel not listed as protected in 01autoremove-kernels
  - Run autoremove

  [Where problems could occur]
  We may more easily run out of space in /boot. hirsute has new autoremoval
code that runs completely at runtime; but that seems a bit large to SRU after
only a few weeks in hirsute. Hence, we should protect the current kernel _in
addition_ to the other kernels, just like unattended-upgrades and
update-manager do. This increases the risk of filling up /boot compared to
older apt versions, but is at the same level as unattended-upgrades and
update-manager.

  [Original bug report]

  This may happen, if you boot one of the older kernels, that is not
  protected by /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01autoremove-kernels

  Workaround: run
  /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal
  during each boot (e.g. by using cron).
  Note: The workaround breaks autoremoving feature of new unneeded kernels in
unattended-upgrades i.e. the setting
'Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-New-Unused-Dependencies "true"' (which is default
in 16.04 unless 'Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "true"' is set
in '/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades'.

  In shell:

  $ uname -r
  4.4.0-22-generic
  $ apt-get -s autoremove
  NOTE: This is only a simulation!
    apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
    Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
    so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

Bug description:
  The release of OpenSSH 8.2 has removed `ssh-rsa` from the default list
  of CACertificateAlgorithms. However the latest `openssh-client` still
  ships the man page for ssh_config(5) that contains the following
  description:

   CASignatureAlgorithms
   Specifies which algorithms are allowed for signing of
certificates
   by certificate authorities (CAs). The default is:

ecdsa-sha2-nistp256,ecdsa-sha2-nistp384,ecdsa-sha2-nistp521,
     ssh-ed25519,rsa-sha2-512,rsa-sha2-256,ssh-rsa

   ssh(1) will not accept host certificates signed using algorithms
   other than those specified.

  As far as I am concerned, `ssh-rsa` should be dropped from the list so
  as to match the behavior of ssh(1).

Title:
  sudo apport-kde is in a different design (stripped
  XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP)

Status in sudo package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in sudo source package in Jammy:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Running ubuntu-bug as normal user has the correct theme (see
  screenshots attached to bug #1881640), but running "sudo ubuntu-bug"
  has a different, non-matching theme (see attached screenshot). This
  applies to all Qt applications.

  [Test Plan]

  This problem can be reproduce by running a KDE application on Ubuntu
  Desktop (GNOME):

  1. Launch ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso
  2. Install apport-kde
  3. Run: /usr/share/apport/apport-kde -f
  4. Run: sudo /usr/share/apport/apport-kde -f
  5. Compare both windows. They have different icons and font size.

  Same result with KDE:

  1. Use kubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso
  2. Run ubuntu-bug -f
  3. Run: sudo ubuntu-bug -f

  [Analysis]

  Qt needs XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP to be set to determine the correct theme,
  but XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is not in the list of environment variables to
  preserve (and not in env_keep in /etc/sudoers).

  On other other hand, sudo preserves the DISPLAY environment variable:

  $ sudo env | grep -Ev '^(LC|LS|SUDO|LANG|COLOR|TERM|PATH)'
  XAUTHORITY=/run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority
  DISPLAY=:0
  MAIL=/var/mail/root
  LOGNAME=root
  USER=root
  HOME=/root
  SHELL=/bin/bash

  [Workaround]

  Prevent sudo from dropping XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP by running: sudo
  XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=$XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP /usr/share/apport/apport-kde
  -f

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1961427] Re: zlib: compressBound() returns an incorrect result on z15

Bug description:
  SRU Justification:
  ==

  [Impact]

  * zlib: compressBound() returns an incorrect result on IBM z15
  hardware.

  * Passing the result of compressBound() to compress() results
    in an error code.

  * This is because compressBound() is not adjusted for DFLTCC.

  [Fix]

  * Adjust compressBound() for DFLTCC like it's already done
    for deflateBound().

  * Since zlib project does not accept patches at the moment,
    the fix has been integrated into the DFLTCC pull request:
    https://github.com/madler/zlib/pull/410
    The commitid is b25781e735363e04f6c56e21431c47e4afc50b17.

  * The fix extracted out of the above is:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/589857296/debdiff_zlib_1.2.11.dfsg-2ubuntu7_to_zlib_1.2.11.dfsg-2ubuntu8_jammy.diff

  * On top of this actual zlib fix, there is another patch needed:
   'Remove compressBound assertions. (PR #1258)' for htslib.

  * But there is a standalone 'htslib' package version, as well as a
htslib version included in (some) 'bedtools' packages.
Both need to be patched (see '[Other]' for more details).

  [Test Plan]

  * An IBM z15 system (LPAR, z/VM guest or KVM virtual machine)
    with Ubuntu Server 21.10 (or 22.04).

  * A test can be done based on the following C test program:
    #include
    #include
    #include
    int main() {
    Bytef in_buf[128], out_buf[1024];
    for (size_t i = 0; i < sizeof(in_buf); i++)
    in_buf[i] = rand();
    uLongf dest_len = compressBound(sizeof(in_buf));
    assert(dest_len <= sizeof(out_buf));
    int ret = compress(out_buf, &dest_len,
   in_buf, sizeof(in_buf));
    assert(ret == Z_OK);
    }

  * The test needs to be done by IBM, due to the requirements
    for the special z15 hardware.

  * A successful test was just completed, based on the version in jammy-
  proposed, which is at the same code level that the impish version this
  SRU is targeted for.

  [Where problems could occur]

  * If the adjustment of compressBound() for DFLTCC is done
    erroneously the issue can still be present or in worst case
    even affect Z systems other than z15 only.

  * The compression can become errorneous with the new changes,
    e.g. in compressBound.

  * Mistakes in dfltcc_free_window OF and especially DEFLATE_BOUND_COMPLEN,
    (incl. the bit definitions), may cause various and unforseen defects.

  * Any build time issues that might have been introduced by this patch
    can be identified by a test build; this was done and is available here:
    https://launchpad.net/~fheimes/+archive/ubuntu/lp1961427

  [Other Info]

  * Ubuntu jammy, impish and focal are affected by the zlib issue.

  * The 'htslib' version '1.13+ds' (as it is part of I, J and K),
already includes the patch,
hence only htslib '1.10.2' in focal needs to be patched.

  * The bedtools version '2.30.0+dfsg' (as it is part of I, J and K),
requires the patch,
but version '2.27.1+dfsg' bedtools in focal does not incl. an
embedded htslib, hence does not need to be (actually can't be)
patched.

  * Patched version of the affected htslib and bedtools packages
are build and also available at this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~fheimes/+archive/ubuntu/lp1961427
