  screen locks after timeout even when configured not to

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  in System Settings, "Brightness & Lock", "Turn screen off when
  inactive for:" is set to "Never", the screen is automatically turned
  off after 5 minutes of inactivity. HIGHLY annoying behavior when
  running in a VM, and in my workflow, extremely disruptive.

Title:
  unity dialogues split between 2 monitors

Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Expired
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Expired
Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Since upgrading from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04, Unity is now shown across
  both my monitors in a hard to use manner: unity dialogues, such as the
  log-out and shutdown popups, are displayed centered between both
  monitors, so the left half is on one monitor, and the right half on
  another. Also, the unity top panel indicators and clock used to be on
  both monitors, but are now only on the right monitor.

  More info since it is likely relevant:
  I have a Dell laptop with an NVidia Prime GPU and Intel built-in GPU. This
laptop has always been trouble configuring for dual monitors. The
nvidia-settings controls only shows one monitor, though it is supposed to show
two. I have never been able to get a working xorg.conf for the two monitors,
despited 2 days of trying (and I am a software developer well versed in reading
docs). The instructions in the nvidia docs simply don't work as stated for this
hardware (Dell XPS 17 L702X). Purging all graphics settings doesn't help.
Upgrading to a newer nvidia driver didn't help (I've tried the latest official
nvidia package as well as one newer). As a result, I've been using an xrandr
command and compiz display settings since Ubuntu 15.10. This worked perfectly
in 15.10. But, as stated, the unity top panel and dialogues are not working
properly in 16.04.

  I tried Nvidia 361.42 and 364.19 from the PPA at
  http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu.

  The xrandr command in use is:
  xrandr --fb 3520x1080 --output HDMI-0 --preferred --primary --mode 1920x1080
--pos 0x0 --panning 3520x1080+0+0/3520x1080+0+0/0/0/-3520/0 --output LVDS-1
--mode 1600x900 --pos 1920x180 --panning 0x0

  (I know the fb sets up a wide virtual screen, but as stated, in 15.10,
  that worked perfectly for unity)

  In compiz display settings I have the following "Outputs" set:
  1920x1080+0+0
  1600x900+1920+180

  It would appear in 16.04, Unity ignores the compiz outputs whereas in
  15.10 it does not. But that's just a guess.

  Sorry I cannot get a screenshot of the dialogues. They seem to block
  Ubuntu's screenshot program due to their modal nature.

Bug description:
  I regularly get Xorg freezes if I log in immediately after booting,
  and only when when running dual 4k displays (internal and external).
  If I alt-ctrl-F1 to virtual console, login and enter a catchall

  $ sleep 20 && kill -9 -1 0

  and then alt-ctrl-F7 to attempt an X login, the Xorg freezes seem to
  happen less often. When the freezes do happen, the kill statement
  returns the X login prompt. Typically (but not always) when repeating
  this process a second time, the X login succeeds.

  intermittent black screen on bootup

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  sometimes when I boot up, the screen stays black. Only the mouse
  cursor works, and control-alt-f1 gives a useable screen. Rebooting
  from there usually gives me a clean bootup, but sometimes it takes
  several efforts.

Title:
  PC freeze when turning off screen

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I have an ubuntu 16.04 PC which was recently upgraded from
  10.something to 12.04 and then to 16.04 (I think that is how it went,
  it was a two day thing with me checking on it now and again to say
  yes. Now that it is running on 16.04 I have noticed that when I left
  the PC for a while it locked up. The display was off, the power light
  on the tower solidly on and the keyboard unresponsive. The Num Lock
  light was lit but would not respond to key presses, nor would the Caps
  Lock or Scroll Lock lights. No key presses or short press of a power
  light would change the system state. The only thing I could do while
  sat at the PC was hold the power button in to force a power off.

  When the PC was powered back on everything seemed to be OK.

  I thought it might be a problem with suspending the PC. I was able to
  do that manually though. The display went off, the tower fans went
  quiet and the power light started to blink. Pressing keyboard keys
  did nothing but a short press of the power button brought the system
  back online. The only problem being that the Wi-Fi was lost until I
  restarted the system, not ideal but better than frozen.

  I attempted to disable the automatic suspend option from the Settings
  menu but the system still ended up in the frozen state. Next to
  completely disable suspend by creating a
  /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.disable-
  suspend.pkla file as suggested at
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/452908/how-to-disable-suspend-in-14-04
  but the system still ended up frozen.

  That leaves me to think it was the act of going into the Monitor
  Disabled state which caused the issue. So I started to report an
  ubuntu-bug and here I am typing out this description of what I
  remember doing.

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  Release:  16.04

  Memory 2.0 GiB
  Processor Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4400 @ 2.00 GHz x 2
  Graphics Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV515
  OS type 64-bit
  Disk 96.6 GB

  If there are any further diagnostic steps I can take please let me
  know. This is a personal machine so I can do most things to it. I am
  a c/c++ software engineer by trade so although I am not great with the
  GNU Debugger I can do most things with a bit of instruction. I do not
  do much Ubuntu or Kernel work so links to getting started guides for
  how to do anything more specific that git clone or make would be
  appreciated.

Title:
  multi-display layout corrupt after reboot or log out/in

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Every time I reboot or log out and back in again, The layout of the displays
is incorrect.
  Correcting the layout is a bit 'hit and miss' as the changed layout is not
always applied correctly.

  There was a massive improvement after upgrading to 16.04 from 14.04.
  Previously, the upper display did not render pixels consistently. The
  upgrade corrected this.

  The upper display (29") is connected to the NVIDIA Corporation GK107
  [GeForce GT 740] display card and the lower display (23") is connected
  to the on-board Intel Integrated Graphics Controller.

  I hope this information is useful. Thanks for your efforts...

Title:
  Help! Mouse moves but none of the buttons work!

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I start it up and everything goes fine for maybe the first two minutes of
whatever I'm doing.
  then all of a sudden I can't click anything. Also I want to close a window,
move the cursor over the X, going backward and forward with my mouse buttons
but I can't. I can push right click, try to kill the window but then I can't
confirm because I can't click 'yes.' I can't even power down normally because I
can't click 'yes' when the duologue appears. Very annoying.
  when I had windows 7 and 8 it happened and with so much searches that I did
nothing worked so I did not use my gaming mouse for months and after a long
time I did plug in my mouse and there was no problem.
  rightnow I have Ubuntu 14.04 for one year and this problem happened again.
  I have "MSI Gaming Mouse P/n s12-0400690-AA3"
  Thanks

Bug description:
  Upon boot, I always have right monitor ending up on the left and vice
  versa. I have to move them every single time after boot and after I
  turn off both then turn on both. It never saves my settings. Also, 1
  of the monitors is 4k and other one is 2560x1440 max, I save them both
  to be 2560x1440 but after boot or turn off/turn on sequence 4k goes
  into max resolution of 3840x2160. I tried various options with xrandr

Bug description:
  Hi!
  My server has this rare intermittent error -
  networkd-dispatcher[781]: WARNING:Unknown index 56 seen, reloading interface
list
  systemd-udevd[455717]: ethtool: autonegotiation is unset or enabled, the
speed and duplex are not writable.

  This causes failure of network for some time. I'm using kubernetes so
  my probes start failing and pods get killed.

  Ideally this error should not be coming.

  What is the root cause of this problem?

  Ubuntu 20.04

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1995891] [NEW] look utility failing

2022-11-07 Thread Jim Pennino
Public bug reported:

The look utility has more or less stopped working, i.e. it finds results
for some words but not others.

Example: look answ, among many others, returns nothing while a grep of
/usr/share/dict/words returns matches.

All the links to /usr/share/dict/words appear to be correct.

This happens on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS on both X86_64 and aarch64 for
bsdextrautils 2.37.2-4ubuntu3.

** Affects: util-linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Status in openssh source package in Kinetic:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Users with /etc/ssh/sshd_config's that contain ListenAddress entries
  with the port specified will not be migrated to socket-activated ssh
  correctly, or may be migrated when they should not be (e.g. if
  ListenAddress, with a port number, is specified more than once). This
  leaves users with a broken sshd configuration.

  [Test Plan]

  There are 4 tests that should be used to verify the fix:

  1. Upgrade to Kinetic with just one ListenAddress entry, which
  specifies port number.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  * Run `systemctl restart ssh.service` and confirm that the new configuration
works as expected.
  * Before running the upgrade, make sure -proposed is enabled.
  * Upgrade to Kinetic by changing jammy -> kinetic in /etc/apt/sources.list,
and then running apt dist-upgrade (-proposed is disabled when using
ubuntu-release-upgrader).
  * On an affected system, ssh.socket will fail with `bad-setting` because
/etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/address.conf contains:

  [Socket]
  ListenStream=

  * On a patched system, ssh.socket will be active/listening, and
  /etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/addresses.conf will contain the
  following:

  [Socket]
  ListenStream=
  ListenStream=0.0.0.0:1234

  2. Upgrade to Kinetic with multiple ListenAddress entries, each
  specifying port number.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234
  ListenAddress [::]:4321

  * On an affected system, migration will be attempted despite the multiple
ListenAddress options, and ssh.socket will fail with `bad-setting` because
/etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/address.conf contains:

  [Socket]
  ListenStream=

  * On a patched system, the ListenAddress option will be parsed
  correctly, and migration will not be attempted.

  3. On a Kinetic system which was migrated, but with errors (e.g. test
  case #1, prior to being patched), installing the new package should
  correct the ssh.socket configuration.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  * Run `systemctl restart ssh.service` and confirm that the new configuration
works as expected.
  * Do NOT enable -proposed before the upgrade.
  * Run `do-release-upgrade` to upgrade to Kinetic (setting Prompt=normal in
/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades if needed).
  * After the openssh-server configuration fails, enable -proposed, and upgrade
openssh-server.

  * The ssh.socket configuration should be fixed, and
/etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/addresses.conf should contain:
  [Socket]
  ListenStream=
  ListenStream=0.0.0.0:1234

  4. On a Kinetic system which was incorrectly migrated to ssh socket
  activation (e.g. test case #2, prior to being patched), installing the
  new package reverts to the previous behavior.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234
  ListenAddress [::]:4321

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  * Run `systemctl restart ssh.service` and confirm that the new configuration
works as expected.
  * Do NOT enable -proposed before the upgrade.
  * Run `do-release-upgrade` to upgrade to Kinetic (setting Prompt=normal in
/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades if needed).
  * After the openssh-server configuration fails, enable -proposed, and upgrade
openssh-server.
  * The socket-activated ssh

   * In some cases, if the users’ initramfs grow bigger, then it’ll
  likely not be able to be loaded by grub2.

   * Some real cases from OEM projects:

  In many built-in 4k monitor laptops with nvidia drivers, the u-d-c
  puts the nvidia*.ko to initramfs which grows the initramfs to ~120M.
  Also the gfxpayload=auto will remain to use 4K resolution since it’s
  what EFI POST passed.

  In this case, the grub isn't able to load initramfs because the
  grub_memalign() won't be able to get suitable memory for the larger

  Based on grub_mm_dump, we can see the memory fragment (some parts seem
  likely be used because of 4K resolution?) and doesn’t have available
  contiguous memory for larger file as:

  ```
  grub_real_malloc(...)
  ...
  if (cur->size >= n + extra)
  ```

  Based on UEFI Specification Section 7.2[1] and UEFI driver writers’
  guide 4.2.3[2], we can ask 32bits+ on AllocatePages().

  As most X86_64 platforms should support 64 bits addressing, we should
  extend GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS to 64 bits to get more available
  memory.

   * When users grown the initramfs, then probably will get initramfs
  not found which really annoyed and impact the user experience (system
  not able to boot).

  [Test Plan]

   * detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug:

  1. Any method to grow the initramfs, such as install nvidia-driver.

  2. If developers would like to reproduce, then could dd if=/dev/random
  of=... bs=1M count=500, something like:

  ```
  $ cat /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/zzz-touch-a-file
  #!/bin/sh
  PREREQ=""
  prereqs()
  {
  echo "$PREREQ"
  }
  case $1 in
  # get pre-requisites
  prereqs)
  prereqs
  exit 0
  ;;
  esac
  . /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions
  dd if=/dev/random of=${DESTDIR}/test-500M bs=1M count=500
  ```

  And then update-initramfs

   * After applying my patches, the issue is gone.

   * I did also test my test grubx64.efi in:

  1. X86_64 qemu with
  1.1. 60M initramfs + 5.15.0-37-generic kernel
  1.2. 565M initramfs + 5.17.0-1011-oem kernel

  2. Amd64 HP mobile workstation with
  2.1. 65M initramfs + 5.15.0-39-generic kernel
  2.2. 771M initramfs + 5.17.0-1011-oem kernel

  All working well.

  [Where problems could occur]

  * The changes almost in i386/efi, thus the impact will be in the i386 /
x86_64 EFI system.
  The other change is to modify the “grub-core/kern/efi/mm.c” but I use the
original addressing for “arm/arm64/ia64/riscv32/riscv64”.
  Thus it should not impact them.

  * There is a “#if defined(__x86_64__)” which intent to limit the >
  32bits code in i386 system and also

  ```
   #if defined (__code_model_large__)
  -#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS 0x
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS __UINTPTR_MAX__
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_ALLOCATION_ADDRESS 0x7fff
   #else
   #define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS 0x7fff
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_ALLOCATION_ADDRESS 0x3fff
   #endif
  ```

  If everything works as expected, then i386 should working good.

  If not lucky, based on “UEFI writers’ guide”[2], the i386 will get >
  4GB memory region and never be able to access.

Status in openssh source package in Kinetic:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Users with /etc/ssh/sshd_config's that contain ListenAddress entries
  with the port specified will not be migrated to socket-activated ssh
  correctly, or may be migrated when they should not be (e.g. if
  ListenAddress, with a port number, is specified more than once). This
  leaves users with a broken sshd configuration.

  [Test Plan]

  There are 4 tests that should be used to verify the fix:

  1. Upgrade to Kinetic with just one ListenAddress entry, which
  specifies port number.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  * Run `systemctl restart ssh.service` and confirm that the new configuration
works as expected.
  * Before running the upgrade, make sure -proposed is enabled.
  * Upgrade to Kinetic by changing jammy -> kinetic in /etc/apt/sources.list,
and then running apt dist-upgrade (-proposed is disabled when using
ubuntu-release-upgrader).
  * On an affected system, ssh.socket will fail with `bad-setting` because
/etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/address.conf contains:

  [Socket]
  ListenStream=

  * On a patched system, ssh.socket will be active/listening, and
  /etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/addresses.conf will contain the
  following:

  [Socket]
  ListenStream=
  ListenStream=0.0.0.0:1234

  2. Upgrade to Kinetic with multiple ListenAddress entries, each
  specifying port number.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234
  ListenAddress [::]:4321

  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  * Run `systemctl restart ssh.service` and confirm that the new configuration
works as expected.
  * Do NOT enable -proposed before the upgrade.
  * Run `do-release-upgrade` to upgrade to Kinetic (setting Prompt=normal in
/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades if needed).
  * After the openssh-server configuration fails, enable -proposed, and upgrade
openssh-server.

  * The ssh.socket configuration should be fixed, and
/etc/systemd/system/ssh.socket.d/addresses.conf should contain:
  [Socket]
  ListenStream=
  ListenStream=0.0.0.0:1234

  4. On a Kinetic system which was incorrectly migrated to ssh socket
  activation (e.g. test case #2, prior to being patched), installing the
  new package reverts to the previous behavior.

  * On a Jammy system, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so that it contains the
  following:

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  #Port 22
  #AddressFamily any
  #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
  #ListenAddress ::
  ListenAddress 0.0.0.0:1234
  ListenAddress [::]:4321

  [...defaults everywhere else...]

  * Run `systemctl restart ssh.service` and confirm that the new configuration
works as expected.
  * Do NOT enable -proposed before the upgrade.
  * Run `do-release-upgrade` to upgrade to Kinetic (setting Prompt=normal in
/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades if needed).
  * After the openssh-server configuration fails, enable -proposed, and upgrade
openssh-server.
  * The socket-activated ssh migration should be reverted, and ssh.service
should be running as

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1971901] Re: dlltool uses non-unique temp filenames

2022-11-07 Thread Kevin Puetz
The versioning is confusing because this package is not self-contiained.
It gets most of its source code from another package, recorded via
`Built-Using: binutils` in its debian/control file. The actual buggy
code is in binutils-source 2.38-3ubuntu1; binutils-source 2.38-4ubuntu2
contains the fix. This is the part of the status I updated to "Fix
Released".

binutils-mingw-w64 9build1 doesn't need any source changes, but the
current binary package is 2.38-3ubuntu1+9build1, which has the bugs
binutils 2.38-3ubuntu1 did. If one takes that binutils-
mingw-w64_9build1.dsc, as-is, and runs it through `pbuilder build ...`
in a basetgz that has jammy-updates enabled, its Build-Depends:
binutils-source (>= 2.36~) now picks 2.38-4ubuntu2 and produces
binutils-mingw-w64 2.38-4ubuntu2+9build1, which is a working binary
package. I have tested this locally, but I don't have any ubuntu project
permissions to get that uploaded anywhere official.

Hence the binutils the binutils-mingw-w64 is still just "triaged" (and,
as you saw, doesn't work). kinetic and lunar currently have the same
(broken) binary package too.

dlls/winmm/libwinmm.cross.a --export \
../wine-6.0.4/dlls/winmm/winmm.spec

  Due to dlltool using names like winmm_dll_t.s and winmm_dll_t.o for
  it's temp file - these are not unique when building libwinmm.delay.a
  and libwinmm.cross.a in parallel. (This can of course affect any dll
  wine is building import libs for, winmm is just the one I happaned to
  get caught on).

  This is regression newly introduced in binutils 2.38 vs older versions
  which used getpid() as the basis of their temp name. We just
  encountered it as part of updating our CI for a winelib application
  from focal to jammy, but it seems to have been discovered by others
  already: see https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28885

  There is an upstream fix on master (2.39) which is already backported
  to the binutils-2_38 branch:
  https://sourceware.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=binutils-
  gdb.git;h=99852365513266afdd793289813e8e565186c9e6, so it should just
  be a matter of cherry-picking. Hopefully the fact it's a regression
  from impish->jammy and that upstream already backported it to 2.38
  might make this a candidate for jammy-updates?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1995761] Re: Xorg crash

2022-11-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1957909] Re: NetworkManager connectivity check fails

2022-11-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Could be transient issues with one of the servers as described in
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/network-manager-connectivity-check-
problem/ though we haven't got reports of the problem recently...

** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

Title:
  NetworkManager connectivity check fails

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I randomly receive "No internet connection available" notification,
  even if my internet connection is stable. (Not the exact term)

  In /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/20-connectivity-ubuntu.conf the endpoint
  http://connectivity-check.ubuntu.com./
  is used. I manually pinged the endpoint.
  I live in europe and the server is located in the US. The latency is about
160ms. Usually I have an approximate latency of 15ms.
  It is not a problem of my ISP, I receive this notification on different
locations in Germany and Switzerland.

  I propose to use another endpoint or provide another server for the same
endpoint for europe.
  So the DNS servers in europe provide the IP of a server located in europe.

  The config comes from the package "network-manager-config-
  connectivity-ubuntu" version 1.32.12-0ubuntu1.

Bug description:
  The ICU data we embed in tzdata was out of sync on the 2022f-0ubuntu1
  upload, still matching the 2022e data instead. It's been updated
  upstream, so we need to do another round of SRUs for it:

  https://github.com/unicode-org/icu-
  data/commit/ad9d2568d02b2130f1ba34f876fc82cad32c522f

  The following Python script should work with the update and crash on
  obsolete data:

  from datetime import datetime
  from icu import ICUtzinfo, TimeZone
  tz = ICUtzinfo(TimeZone.createTimeZone("America/Chihuahua"))
  before = datetime(2022, 10, 1)
  after = datetime(2022, 11, 2)
  assert(tz.utcoffset(before) == tz.utcoffset(after))

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1995749] Re: Maximum resolution not available after suspend / screen detach

2022-11-07 Thread Peter Dedecker
Now I have a related problem at work, where the external monitors were
not detected after plugging in the laptop in the docking station and
opening the lid. Turning off and on one monitor resulted in detection
(in poor resolution) but not the second external one. When both are
turned off and on, the system hangs until I disconnect the USB-C cable
to the docking station.

A terminal window was open where lsusb was my previous command. During
the unresponsive period whilst the docking station was connected, I
could press , without seeing anything on the screen,
but after disconnecting the docking station again the command and output
where shown:

$ lsusb -tv
