2023-01-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yeah I can't see this bug anymore on kinetic with kernel
5.19.0-29-generic. So this is closed and bug 2001914 separated.

Title:
GPU hang on Alder Lake laptop

Status in Linux:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
I see frequent (multiple times per day) hangs on my Lenovo ThinkPad X1
Carbon Gen 10. When this occurs, part of the image tears away and X
becomes unusable. Sometimes the cursor continues to move for a short
time after the fact. In order to recover, I must SSH into the machine
and run `sudo killall -9 Xorg`, which drops me back to the lightdm
login screen and then things work again.

I've also seen this on Debian sid on a nearly identical machine, and
there when upgrading to kernel 6.0 and Mesa 22.3, the problem
disappears. However, those are not available in Kinetic.

I've tried both `i915.enable_psr=0` and `i915.enable_dc=0` as boot
parameters and this does not affect anything. The problem has been
occurring since I installed Ubuntu on this machine when I got it on
  November 17.

I believe the upstream bug report is this:
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/6757.

Title:
Replace the Livepatch tab by an Ubuntu Pro one

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  * Impact

We want desktop integration with Ubuntu Pro, that will also replace
the custom registration code we had for Livepatch which is integrated
  with the new service

  * Test case

  - ensure that the machine isn't attached to ubuntu pro (otherwise the screen
would not be displayed) and is online
  $ pro status
and `$ pro deteach` if needed

  $ software-properties-gtk
-> the list of tabs should include an 'Ubuntu Pro' one and no 'Livepatch'

The Ubuntu Pro tab should state 'This machine is not covered by an
Ubuntu Pro subscription', display a 'Enable Ubuntu Pro' button and
  have other controls inactive

  - click 'Enable Ubuntu Pro'
-> A dialog 'Enable Ubuntu Pro' opens
-> the first option 'Enter code on ubuntu.com/pro/attach' is selected
-> a pincode is displayed under the option

  - go to http//ubuntu.com/pro/attach and enter the pincode
-> after some seconds the software-properties UI should update and display a
green mark and 'Valid token' label on the right of the pincode

  - click 'Confirm'
-> you should get an authentification prompt

  - enter your password
-> a spinner starts animating instead of the 'Valid token' label
-> once the attachment job is done the dialog is autoclosed
-> the UI should now state 'Ubuntu Pro support is enabled', under Security
'ESM Infra', 'ESM Apps' and 'Kernel Livepatch' should be displayed an enabled

  - check that the '$ pro status' output matches the UI one

  - try enabling/disable options
-> verify that the 'pro status' change accordingly

  - Click 'Disable Ubuntu Pro'
-> you get asked for confirmation and password
-> confirm that the UI is back to the original state and that 'pro status'
confirm the system isn't attached to Ubuntu Pro anymore

  - Go through the testcase again but selecting the 'Or add token
manually' option, the steps should be similar

  * Regression Potential

There could be problems in the UI
The new service could be not working as expected
Strings are new and currently have no translations

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1286910] Re: Lock screen uses last active window's language instead of default keyboard language

2023-01-20 Thread Aleksey
This started happening again for me after the upgrade to Ubuntu 22.10
and GNOME 43.1. Now switcher doesn't work at all with the keyboard, and
I have to use the mouse to switch the language manually.

Bug description:
Lock screen (gnome-screensaver) uses last active window's language
(keyboard layout) instead of default keyboard language.

  Steps to reproduce this bug:
  1. In the system Text Entry settings:
1a. add two or more languages to the input sources list, e.g. English (as
first and default) and Russian (as second);
1b. Set hotkeys to switch sources (e.g. Ctrl+Shift or CapsLock).
1c. Select "Allow different sources for each window" radio button.
1d. Select "New windows use the default source" radio button.
  2. Run any application (e.g. gedit) and switch keyboard to second input
language (Russian).
  3. Lock the screen (Ctrl+Alt+L) or just wait idle time.
  4. See what language set by default for password input in the lock screen.

Expected: lock screen uses first input language (English) by default.
What happened instead: lock screen uses last active window's language
(Russian).

Ubuntu versions affected: Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 14.04 (daily builds)
  gnome-screensaver versions: 3.6.1-0ubuntu7, 3.6.1-0ubuntu9

would not be displayed) and is online
  $ pro status
and `$ pro deteach` if needed

Title:
Replace the Livepatch tab by an Ubuntu Pro one

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  * Impact

We want desktop integration with Ubuntu Pro, that will also replace
the custom registration code we had for Livepatch which is integrated
  with the new service

  * Test case

  - ensure that the machine isn't attached to ubuntu pro (otherwise the screen
would not be displayed) and is online
  $ pro status
and `$ pro deteach` if needed

  - until the service is in production to try the magic workflow, edit
/etc/ubuntu-advantage/uaclient.conf to set
  contract_url: https://contracts.staging.canonical.com
  then 'ua refresh config')
and use the non staging for token registration

  - $ software-properties-gtk

(or without 'ESM Apps' if you don't have the current ubuntu-advantage-tools)

  - check that the '$ pro status' output matches the UI one

  - try enabling/disable options
-> verify that the 'pro status' change accordingly

  - Click 'Disable Ubuntu Pro'
-> you get asked for confirmation and password
-> confirm that the UI is back to the original state and that 'pro status'

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2003387] Re: ubuntu-desktop-minimal should depend on cryptsetup, lvm2

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  The meta-packages ubuntu-desktop-minimal / ubuntu-minimal depend on
everything needed for a functioning desktop / server installation
  respectively. Well, almost everything.

Two packages that they don't depend on, but should, or at least it should
recommend them are:
  - cryptsetup
  - lvm2

The reason is that if Ubuntu was installed with disk encryption and/or
LVM turned on, these packages are essential. The system won't even
boot without cryptsetup, for example (found this out the hard way).

The release of Ubuntu you are using: 22.10
The version of the package you are using: ubuntu-desktop-minimal 1.497

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2002886] Re: Can't copy and paste from Geany (and SciTE?) in Wayland with GTK 3.24.35

Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
With GTK 3.24.35, when running under Wayland, it's not possible to
copy and paste from Geany. (Others report the same issue with SciTE,
which also uses the Scintilla editor.)

The Geany upsteam bug isolated the issue to a GTK change
  (https://github.com/geany/geany/issues/3345#issuecomment-1360370992).

  The GTK bug (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/5397) was
  resolved

and the fix is in GTK 3.24.36.

  I installed the libgtk-3-0_3.24.36-1_amd64.deb and
libgtk-3-common_3.24.36-1_all.deb packages from Debian on a Lunar test
system and this did resolve the issue.

open3d and openvdb are fixed in lunar-proposed, and don't have a runtime
dependency on libtbb2 (so why do they have the build-dep?), so this is
ok.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2003527] Re: Replace the Livepatch tab by an Ubuntu Pro one

2023-01-20 Thread Steve Langasek
After discussion with Seb, have confirmed that the language pack gets
updated strings injected from the package build, so does not need an
updated .pot file in the source tarball.

I noticed in the review that there is a change to debian/control,
dropping references to gir1.2-snapd-1. Normally we should avoid
packaging changes in SRUs. In this case, I'm unable to find any
references to snapd in the python source, so this looks safe.

There are also some translatable string differences between the SRUed
version and the version in lunar, e.g.:

-Enter code on
ubuntu.com/pro/attach
+Log in with Ubuntu
One

and:

-FIPS 140-2
+FIPS
140-2

This is a concern because it means these are new untranslated strings
which our translators have had no head start on being able to translate
in the devel series (which would make it a lot easier to copy the
translations back for the identical strings to the stable series).
While the window here is short enough that we might not have any new
translations anyway, I think it's improper to introduce new English-
language strings in this way, for users to be confronted with in an
otherwise-localized system.

Anyway, I'm accepting this, but I would like to see some committment to
following through with the translation team so they are aware there are
new strings to be translated in the default desktop in a stable series,
and have a chance to get updates into a language pack update for the
next point release.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2003527] Re: Replace the Livepatch tab by an Ubuntu Pro one

2023-01-20 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Sebastien, or anyone else affected,

Accepted software-properties into bionic-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-properties/0.96.24.32.19
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2003387] Re: ubuntu-desktop-minimal should depend on cryptsetup, lvm2

2023-01-20 Thread Peter
@jbicha
After installation, it was fine. It's just that in the process of trying to
clean up leftover packages years later, I did something like:

# apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
# apt-mark auto '*'
# apt-mark manual ubuntu-minimal
# apt-mark manual ubuntu-desktop-minimal
# apt-mark manual linux-generic
...same for some other packages I actively used...
# apt-get autopurge

After these steps, the system was left in an unbootable state because in
the "autopurge" / autoremove stage, cryptsetup was uninstalled, hence it
was missing from the new initrd.

I don't know if this is an "intended use case" for the ubuntu-* metapackages,
but apart from cryptsetup (and lvm2 which I suspected is needed so I
fortunately marked it as manual), every other package that's needed for a
functioning system is actually Depended / Recommended by the combination of
ubuntu-minimal and ubuntu-desktop-minimal.

(Only other exception being the kernel package but I understand the
reasoning behind that.)

ubuntu-desktop-minimal should depend on cryptsetup, lvm2

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The meta-packages ubuntu-desktop-minimal / ubuntu-minimal depend on
everything needed for a functioning desktop / server installation
  respectively. Well, almost everything.

Two packages that they don't depend on, but should, or at least it should
recommend them are:
  - cryptsetup
  - lvm2

The reason is that if Ubuntu was installed with disk encryption and/or
LVM turned on, these packages are essential. The system won't even
boot without cryptsetup, for example (found this out the hard way).

The release of Ubuntu you are using: 22.10
The version of the package you are using: ubuntu-desktop-minimal 1.497

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2003387] Re: ubuntu-desktop-minimal should depend on cryptsetup, lvm2

2023-01-20 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Marking all packages as 'auto' like that is not supported.

Besides cryptsetup and lvm2, there are several other packages that are
available for the installer and only kept on the system if they are
needed:

https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-
seeds/+git/ubuntu/tree/ship-live

The installer also includes support for many languages but only English
and the configured language is kept on the installed system.

We will likely close this bug since this is intended behavior.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2002891] Re: avahi_service_browser_new() failed: Invalid service type

2023-01-20 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Yes. You've missed a point.

If avahi-browse completely fails because of one invalid answer, this
could allow what we call DoS, Denial of Service (Attack).

All those cryptographic verification, bells, whistles can protect you
from communicating with the wrong one, but none of them can help you if
you don't find the right peer because you don't get an answer to a dns
query. You cannot verify a communication peer, if you can't communicate
with the peer because you don't know its IP address.

This is not about forgery, spoofing, where cryptography would help. This
is about turning off avahi-browse's functionality by sending some answer
avahi-browse considers as invalid, for whatever reason.

Although applications would rather not use the command line tool avahi-
browse as a binary, maybe in shell-scripts, they could use libavahi-
client, in order to find services on the local network. Lots of services
and devices in the LAN are nowadays found that way, e.g. Printers, TVs,
sound devices. Lots of other stuff. And libavahi-client most probably
shows the same effect.

And if you can't find the service providers, because avahi completely
refuses to work because of an invalid packet, this is a denial of
service, and btw., it is poor software, because software should be
robust against malformed packages of any kind.

And this is not easy to solve, because avahi does not give any hint
about what service type is considered as invalid or from which IP
address it came from.

So it is a security issue. Although security is not the primary problem,
because this doesn't need an attacker to fail and it does fail in
complete absence of an attacker. But it could be abused in certain cases
to sabotage programs mking use of mdns service discovery.

  avahi_service_browser_new() failed: Invalid service type

Bug description:
  Hi,

No other output. i.e. it just does not work.

In this network, all Ubuntu machines show this behaviour.

In my other network (with working DHCP-DNS, different router,
different brand, therefore not depending on mdns) the problem does not
  occur

Since the debugging output of avahi software is – if at all – very
poor, I cannot see what causes this problem. However, dbus-monitor
  --system showed

So it seems as if the client (browser) queries one services after the other,
which works, but then an empty string as a name, which is rejected by the
daemon, which then makes the client to spit out this error message and then
terminate immediately.

Since I have similar (i.e. very similar, both created with puppet)
machines, and all machines in one network fail, while similar machines
in another don't, I guess that the problem is caused by some network
  reply, maybe a printer.

This, however, could be a security problem, because if someone can cause
avahi and thus mdns resolution to fail in networks like this here, where the
router and dhcp server does not offer the host names in a DNS domain (Huawei
glass fiber router), a malformed packet could cause the mdns resolution of
avahi to fail and therefore could be used for an attack, effectively blocking
certain kinds of mdns service resolution. But since I have not yet understood

Yes, I just fixed a similar problem, old amdgpu drivers were earlier in
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH for newer versions of x utilities. This caused
quite a few problems getting X working properly.

best to find the directory whre there are amdgpu drivers, and use dpk -r
to remove ALL of them. I removed about 30 different packages from my
system and then was able to resolve the fundamental problem.

This is the list, and the standard installation location they
recommended. Remove the dependencies and you will be good.
