[Touch-packages] [Bug 2007625] Re: New upstream microrelease 2.5.14

2023-03-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Sergio, or anyone else affected,

Accepted openldap into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/2.5.14+dfsg-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

** Changed in: openldap (Ubuntu Jammy)
Status: In Progress => Fix Committed

build the package in bileto and make sure that (1) all build-time
tests pass and (2) all autopkgtest runs (from reverse dependencies)
  also pass.

   * Bileto ticket: N/A (bileto is not working at the moment)

[ Where problems could occur ]

   * Upstream tests are always executed during build-time. There are
many reverse dependencies whose dep8 tests depend on OpenLDAP so the
coverage is good. Nevertheless, there is always a risk for something
to break since we are dealing with a microrelease upgrade. Whenever a
test failure is detected, we will be on top of it and make sure it
  doesn't affect existing users.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2009239] [NEW] Updating base-files at point releases is pointless, misleading, and causes confusion and anxiety

2023-03-03 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

Updating base-files at point releases is pointless, misleading, and
causes confusing and anxiety

Can we please stop updating base-files at point releases?

Building new installer media, and calling it with a new .N number is
good, and helps to differentiate what the initial state the machine
roughly was, given that ultimately the serial # of the installer media
is what matters.

Updating base-files on the installed system => not so much. As it is an
artificial line in the sand that doesn't change anything to the systems,
that are continuously upgrading. The upgrade of base-files package,
doesn't require to refresh snaps to latest revisions; install debs of
latest versions; nor is anything else happening to force that (i.e.
copying all packages from -updates to -security, like debian does).

But it does cause confusion and anxiety among enterprise customers, who
notice an update to base-files and a change of prompts, and suddenly
demand to revert back from .2 release to .1. Which is understandable,
since point releases in other operating systems have longer timespan,
and are allowed to remain on an older substream for longer, and require
admin actions to upgrade. Which is not the case with Ubuntu. Our interim
releases, are actually closer to what windows/rhel call point releases.
Since they are distinct, one can skip them, and they have a different
time window. Our LTS is just a single stream of updates, which is
continiously maintained, and thus it should always be recognized on the
installed systems as "24.04 LTS".

Windows 10 https://learn.microsoft.com/en-
us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro note how windows 10
support multiple year/half releases, which are a track one can stay on
for a long time, even as a new one is already out.

Rhel point release timeframes
https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata#viii notice how
every other point release is supported for up to 4 years, and is a track
one can stay on for that period of time.

Whereas Ubuntu LTS is a single track, that one cannot get off. There
isn't a point release subtrack.

At Linux kernel side, add a Realtek specific quirk to support mSBC.

Connect different headsets to the said controller, HFP can play and record

The kernel part is Realtek specific, so the regression risk is very limited.

The pulseaudio side only affects HFP profile, since the codeflow only

The pulseaudio side only affects HFP profile, since the codeflow only
changes when a mic is present.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2008393] Re: armhf dep8 failure due to restrictions changing apparmor profile status

2023-03-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package rsyslog - 8.2302.0-1ubuntu2

rsyslog (8.2302.0-1ubuntu2) lunar; urgency=medium

  * d/t/simple-*, d/t/control: ignore aa-enforce error, which can happen
on armhf in the Ubuntu DEP8 infrastructure, and allow-stderr for

Title:
armhf dep8 failure due to restrictions changing apparmor profile
  status

Status in rsyslog package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The armhf DEP8 testers in Ubuntu infrastructure have some restrictions
and cannot change an apparmor profile. This is causing the tests to
fail, because they try to make sure rsyslog is being tested in
  enforced mode:

  Enforcing the /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.rsyslogd apparmor profile
  Setting /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.rsyslogd to enforce mode.

ERROR: /sbin/apparmor_parser: Unable to replace "rsyslogd".
Permission denied; attempted to load a profile while confined?

The package migrated to lunar even with this error because it never
had DEP8 tests before, and the armhf baseline was born in this error
  state.

These are the LXD settings used for armhf containers:
  https://git.launchpad.net/autopkgtest-
  cloud/tree/charms/focal/autopkgtest-cloud-worker/autopkgtest-
  cloud/tools/armhf-lxd.userdata#n76

I created an armhf container on a pi4 host (arm64) with these
settings, but couldn't reproduce the issue there. There is something
else going on in the autopkgtest infra regarding arhmf.

FTR, I created the container like this:

  lxc launch ubuntu-daily:lunar pi4:l-armhf \
  -c raw.lxc="apparmor.profile=unconfined" \
  -c raw.lxc="seccomp.profile=" \
  -c security.nesting=true

EDIT: hm, the above actually doesn't work. Only the last raw.lxc value
  is used. See https://blog.simos.info/how-to-add-multi-line-raw-lxc-
  configuration-to-lxd/

But still, apparmor works just fine. There is some other setup going
  on in the autopkgtest infrastructure.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1996040] Re: apport-unpack cannot load gitkraken crash report - 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xfc in position 56

2023-03-03 Thread Steve Langasek
I'd like to understand better exactly how it happened that the user got
this crash. Is it a matter of a corrupted .crash file on input, or is
it that the user tried to feed in a file that was not intended to be
input for apport-unpack? I see that the command line that triggered
this appears to be taking a 'core' file as input rather than a file
ending in .crash, so I'm suspecting the latter.

If it's the latter, then I wouldn't normally consider this SRU-worthy
(though it's borderline to consider it as part of a larger SRU).

If it's the former, then I would be concerned about why the invalid
input happened in the first place, which I don't see addressed here.

apport-unpack and whoopsie-upload-all can crash when fed with a
malformed problem report. They should print a proper error message
instead of crashing. This bug does not happen that often, but the fix
for this bug is the foundation for the fix for bug #1995100.

  Test Plan
  =

  1. Create malformed report:
  ```
  printf 'AB\xfc:CD\n' > malformed.crash
  ```
  2. Try to unpack it:
  ```
  apport-unpack malformed.crash unpack
  ```

It should print an error message instead of a stack trace.

  Where problems could occur
  ==

The patch touches the problem report handling and therefore can affect
  apport-unpack, apport-bug, whoopsie-upload-all. The change is covered
with tests and apport has a test suite running during build and as
  autopkgtest.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1993572] Re: samba profile: missing rule for mkdir /var/cache/samba/printing

2023-03-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Andreas, or anyone else affected,

Accepted apparmor into kinetic-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/3.0.7-1ubuntu2.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
kinetic to verification-done-kinetic. If it does not fix the bug for
you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed-kinetic. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Title:
samba profile: missing rule for mkdir /var/cache/samba/printing

Status in apparmor package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in apparmor source package in Kinetic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  Users who chose to:

  a) install apparmor-profiles (a package with extra optional apparmor
  profiles, including samba)

  b) change the samba related profiles from complain (the default) to
  enforce mode

will find out that sharing a printing in samba and using it won't
  work.

In by itself this is *definitely* not worth an SRU for apparmor, which
impacts all users of Ubuntu (because it's installed everywhere). But,
if apparmor is to be updated for another more important reason, then
this fix could be bundled together with it. Therefore I'm adding the
  block-proposed-kinetic tag to this bug.

  [ Test Plan ]

  sudo apt install apparmor-profiles apparmor-utils apparmor-profiles-extra
sudo apt install samba smbclient cups cups-client

Set a password for the samba "root" user:
  printf "root\nroot\n" | sudo smbpasswd -a root

  Create a fake printer:
  sudo lpadmin -p testprinter -E -v /dev/null

  Check it's there:
  sudo lpstat -l -p testprinter

  Probe it via samba:
  rpcclient -Uroot%root localhost -c 'getprinter testprinter 2'
(some printer related output, or even an error, doesn't matter)

Check dmesg and look for an apparmor ALLOWED message:
  [497031.827841] audit: type=1400 audit(1669215188.733:555):
apparmor="ALLOWED" operation="mkdir" class="file"
namespace="root//lxd-l-samba-apparmor_"
profile="samba-rpcd-spoolss" name="/var/cache/samba/printing/" pid=388168
comm="rpcd_spoolss" requested_mask="c" denied_mask="c" fsuid=100
ouid=100

With the updated package, there should be no apparmor message for
  samba-rpcd-spoolss.

NOTE: since, for this test, we are not switching the apparmor profile
to enforce mode, this means that the mkdir attempted by rpcd_spoolss
will succeed, and if you try the rpcclient command one more time,
there will be no further apparmor messages about it in the logs.

[ Where problems could occur ]

This change is adding an apparmor rule to a samba-related apparmor
profile. Without this rule (and with the apparmor profile in confine
mode), then printing does not work, so regressing that aspect of it is
  hard.

Maybe some exotic future security vulnerability could take advantage
of this new apparmor rule which allows writing to (and therefore
  deleting from) /var/cache/samba/printing.

What's more likely perhaps (but still rare) is that an apparmor
upgrade, which triggers all apparmor profiles to be reloaded, would
find some error in an existing profile and fail to load it, and
perhaps stop loading all other profiles after that, perhaps leaving
the system without confinement. But this should be caught by the
upgrade process since postinst would exit non-zero (hopefully).

  [ Other Info ]
  Not at this time.

  [Original Description]

After the fix for bug #1990692, one more rule is needed it seems.

I put all samba profiles in enforce mode, and when I ran that final
rpcclient command, got an error and an apparmor denied message:

  Prep:
  sudo apt install apparmor-profiles apparmor-utils apparmor-profiles-extra
sudo apt install samba smbclient cups cups-client

Set a password for the samba "root" user:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2009224] Bug is not a security issue

2023-03-03 Thread Paulo Flabiano Smorigo
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

2023-03-03 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the linux-oem-6.1/6.1.0-1008.8
kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and
update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the
tag 'verification-needed-jammy' to 'verification-done-jammy'. If the
problem still exists, change the tag 'verification-needed-jammy' to
'verification-failed-jammy'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how

Bug description:
  [Impact]
When a BT headset is connected Realtek BT USB controller, HFP profile can't
play or record sound when mSBC codec is used.

  [Fix]
At Linux kernel side, add a Realtek specific quirk to support mSBC.

At PulseAudio side, send more data frames until the connected device
  sends response.

  [Test]
Connect different headsets to the said controller, HFP can play and record
sounds now.
Also verified A2DP profile is unaffected.

  [Where problems could occur]
The kernel part is Realtek specific, so the regression risk is very limited.

The pulseaudio side only affects HFP profile, since the codeflow only
changes when a mic is present.

Expected: Nothing happens until the user clicks "Enter code..." radio.

Observed: UI is locked with "Valid token" message next to the manual

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988796] Re: Incorrect rendering triggered by cairo CAIRO_OPERATOR_SATURATE with subpixel positioning

2023-03-03 Thread Athos Ribeiro
** Changed in: pixman (Ubuntu Focal)
Status: Fix Committed => Fix Released

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to pixman in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1988796

Title:
Incorrect rendering triggered by cairo CAIRO_OPERATOR_SATURATE with
  subpixel positioning

Status in pixman package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in pixman source package in Focal:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

OpenSlide (libopenslide0 in Ubuntu) uses Cairo as its rendering
backend, always with CAIRO_OPERATOR_SATURATE and sometimes with
subpixel positioning (when reading certain file formats), and Cairo in
turn invokes this code. As a result, some slides incorrectly render
with large blank spaces and with some pixels rendered on top of other
pixels. This effectively makes OpenSlide unusable for several of the
file formats it supports. No workaround is believed possible within
  the OpenSlide codebase.

  [ Test Plan ]

Compile and run the pixman.c test program uploaded to this bug. It
  should report "OK".

[ Where problems could occur ]

Problems would show up as incorrect pixel output from software that
  renders via Cairo or pixman.

  [ Other Info ]

While I'm not a pixman expert, it appears that the change should only
affect the broken code path, and it seems unlikely that anything else
depends on the incorrect math fixed by this patch. This bug hasn't
previously been reported in Ubuntu, which may imply that this code
path is not exercised by other packages in the distro.

The affected source file has had no further commits upstream since
this patch was applied in April 2019, and some basic commit grepping
didn't turn up any followup fixes elsewhere in the tree.

  [ Original message ]

pixman 0.38.4-0ubuntu1 in focal (and actually pixman 0.38.x generally)
has a regression that causes incorrect rendering in some
circumstances. This can be triggered by the use of cairo with
CAIRO_OPERATOR_SATURATE and subpixel positioning, and causes OpenSlide
   to produce incorrect output.

The attached test program will print "Failed" if the bug exists, or
  "OK" if it doesn't.

  This is fixed upstream in
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pixman/pixman/-/commit/8256c235, which
  is in pixman 0.40.0.

  See https://github.com/openslide/openslide/issues/278 for more
  context.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988819] Re: When apt keeps back packages due to phased updates, it should list them separately

2023-03-03 Thread Sergio Callegari
After further investigation, I would say that "Discover" wants to
upgrade a package (libmm-glib0) notwithstanding the fact that it is
phased and that apt does not want to upgrade it.

Funny enough, Discover does not indicate the other phased packages (it
is up to 24!) as upgradable.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988819] Re: When apt keeps back packages due to phased updates, it should list them separately

2023-03-03 Thread Sergio Callegari
There is a further problem, I do not know if it should be a separate
issue.

The updates icon in the system tray now appears also when there are in
fact no updates that can be applied. Don't know if this actually depends
on the presence of updates that are phased out or on the presence of
Ubuntu Pro (esm-apps) that are not enabled.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1623530] Re: Apport should be disabled by default

2023-03-03 Thread Lug Skeiwoker
Hi, what is the current status? Apport seems to be default-enabled on
all the live images I tried. Also let me ask, the informational link
where one can query one’s own uploads, it does not seem to display
whether or not a coredump was uploaded. Could you provide the same? It
was said that if retracers fail, the coredump with all your data stays
for good in the system. it was nice if the tools would display such
problems and maybe offer a way to request deletion in case of accidental
submission.

I work with large communities (US, India, Latin America) and almost
the number one issue they have with Ubuntu or simply scares them off
is the fact that errors keep popping up every time. Some times
multiples times per minutes, per hour, per day.

The reason is how apport works by default. The "solution" is going to
/etc/default/apport and setting the option to 0 (Disable). I do
understand the full benefit or submitting automatically all bug
reports, but this has gotten (And most Ubuntu users will be able to
confirm) out of hand with some many popup questions about some bug or
another that are simply fixed the moment the report is going to be
send (eg: Compiz issue that was fixed a couple of milliseconds later,
unity issue, dash issue, firefox issue, etc..). All of them have
mechanism to handle failures and basically heal themselves.

  The question regarding this is:

Leaving apport enable by default on an Ubuntu installation simply
scares or annoys end users (a lot may I add). Leaving it disabled, it
will not send a bug report, but there is no issue in simply creating
an ubuntu-bug report through the terminal. So the sending of the
report is still valid, but is not forced onto the user (And not forced
  so many times).

This report is back by about 3 years going back and forth with the
same apport issue and seeing probably around 500 users I have helped
myself with the same issue, since this makes Ubuntu less productive to
the actual user, even from start.

On ubuntu, proper keyboard layouts not available for many languages. Below
few examples
  - Chinese (Available layouts: Chinese, Hanyu Pinyin(altgr)
  - Sinhala (Available layouts: US, with sinhala letters, Sinhala (phonetic)
  and many other languages

According above two examples, it's better to not add above mentioned
layouts because no useful at all.

See the windows 10, it has exact proper keyboard layouts for nearly
all popular languages. Review them and implement the same for ubuntu

Furthermore, there're huge amount of keyboard layouts available with
english characters for many languages.(eg: japanese, thai and more)
it's better remove them and basically duplicate with english keyboard
layouts (or you may able to merge into english keyboards list if
  necessary)
