Title:
  upgrade to lunar fails due to rescue-ssh.target or port 22 takeover

Status in openssh package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Hi,
  I just upgraded a system from Jammy to Lunar and openssh-server refuses to
upgrade well.

  Setting up openssh-server (1:9.0p1-1ubuntu8) ...
  Replacing config file /etc/ssh/sshd_config with new version
  Replacing config file /etc/ssh/sshd_config with new version
  Synchronizing state of ssh.service with SysV service script with
/lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install.
  Executing: /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install disable ssh
  rescue-ssh.target is a disabled or a static unit not running, not starting it.
  Could not execute systemctl: at /usr/bin/deb-systemd-invoke line 145.
  dpkg: error processing package openssh-server (--configure):
   installed openssh-server package post-installation script subprocess
returned error exit status 1
  Processing triggers for man-db (2.11.2-1) ...
  Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.36-0ubuntu4) ...
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   openssh-server
  Error: Timeout was reached
  needrestart is being skipped since dpkg has failed
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

  I'm not sure what exactly it is.
  This output complains about rescue-ssh.target and indeed that can not be
started even directly.

  $ sudo systemctl start rescue-ssh.target
  A dependency job for rescue-ssh.target failed. See 'journalctl -xe' for
details.

  And in postinst is a try to start it:
  $  grep rescue /var/lib/dpkg/info/openssh-server.postinst
deb-systemd-invoke $_dh_action 'rescue-ssh.target' >/dev/null
|| true

  But I think the underlying issue is that ssh is already on, and I'm logged in
via it.
  And that makes the service restart of the ssh socket which was added break.

  Feb 02 10:40:56 node-horsea systemd[104560]: ssh.socket: Failed to create
listening socket ([::]:22): Address already in use
  Feb 02 10:40:56 node-horsea systemd[1]: ssh.socket: Failed to receive
listening socket ([::]:22): Input/output error
  Feb 02 10:40:56 node-horsea systemd[1]: ssh.socket: Failed to listen on
sockets: Input/output error
  Feb 02 10:40:56 node-horsea systemd[1]: ssh.socket: Failed with result
'resources'.

  Now, whichever it is, it is hard to resolve.
  The only way to get the socket to own it would be rebooting so that sshd lets
go and systemd can take over.
  I could reboot, but that is not the point.
  What if I'd want to get the service and upgrade completed before reboot.
  Because as of now dpkg considers the system unhappy, and that would usually
be a sign for "better not reboot before being resolved" to me.

  One thing though, I have not upgraded with do-release-upgrade - would
  we / do we have magic there to make the ssh socket activation
  transition smoother?

The 'kisak' PPA you are using is not supported and likely to cause
graphics bugs. Please remove the 'kisak' PPA from your system and then
continue to log bugs for any problems you find.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1998267] Re: glib not aware of snap confinement

2023-04-04 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Robert, or anyone else affected,

Accepted glib2.0 into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/2.72.4-0ubuntu2 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Bug description:
  [ Impact]

  glib is not aware of snap confinement and this causes the internal
  logic to decide when to use portals to not work as designed. One
  important case is the gsettings backend, which should use a keyfile
  when confined rather than using dconf. When using a fully confined
  desktop this is required, as dconf is not suitable for sharing between
  snaps.

  This has been fixed in glib main:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/merge_requests/3020

  [ Test Plan ]

  (requires a core snap running the updated glib).

  1. Install gnome-calculator snap:
  $ snap install gnome-calculator
  2. Disconnect gsettings interface:
  $ snap disconnect gnome-calculator:gsettings
  3. Run gnome-calculator
  4. Change mode from basic to advanced
  5. Close and re-open gnome-calculator

  Expected result:
  Mode change remembered on second run. gnome-calculator settings written to
~/snap/gnome-calculator/current/.config/glib-2.0/settings/keyfile

  Observed result:
  Mode change not remembered on second run, errors shown in console about
accessing dconf:
  (gnome-calculator:1031938): dconf-CRITICAL **: 14:08:56.034: unable to create
file '/run/user/1000/snap.gnome-calculator/dconf/user': Permission denied.
dconf will not work properly.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  - New bug introduced in glib causing a crash.
  - Security issue introduced in glib due to accessing snapctl.
  - Unexpected behaviour change when running snaps with updated glib.

Bug description:
  The ConditionACPower testing code does not work correctly on some
  systems. This prevents the unattended-updates systemd service running
  as it thinks that a system (a NUC10i3FNYHN) is running on battery. It
  isn't - it just has a power supply that can *provide* power over USB.

  This (unattended-updrades) was OK in Jammy, but started to fail when I
  upgraded to Kinetic.

  (A systemd override file for apt-daily-upgrade.service to remove the
  condition gets the service working again.)

  The problem is similar (or perhaps identical) to the problem with the
  on_ac_power script (from the powermgmt-base package).

  That has been reported in bug #1980991. There are more details there.

Title:
  py3versions doesn't follow symlinks (like realpath)

Status in python3-defaults package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  In case if we have more than one python version and manage them by
update-alternatives, the path to the python binary looks like:
  root@devvm-14-143:~# ls -la /usr/bin/python3
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Apr  4 08:11 /usr/bin/python3 ->
/etc/alternatives/python3
  root@devvm-14-143:~# ls -la /etc/alternatives/python3
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Apr  4 08:11 /etc/alternatives/python3 ->
/usr/bin/python3.8

  So even we use the correct default version of python3 (like in Focal
  it is python3.8) py3version will fail

  root@devvm-14-143:~# py3versions -d
  py3versions: the symlink /usr/bin/python3 does not point to the python3
default version. It must be reset to point to python3.8

  This caused due to os.readlink doesn't follow multiply symlinks, so I
  suggest to use Path from pathlib.

  I have attached patch with suggested changes.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988270] Re: AppArmor fails to start with Yoga UCA libvirt profile on Focal

2023-04-04 Thread Edward Hope-Morley
apparmor is not provided in the Ubuntu Cloud Archive so we can remove
that target from this bug as it is a little misleading. The fix has been
released to Focal and Jammy hence why deploying Openstack Yoga on either
of those (using focal-yoga uca or jammy-updates) gets you the fixed
apparmor. Hope that makes sense.

  netplan plugin: generated NM config when using globbing will be used
  for only one connection

Status in netplan:
  Triaged
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  There is a mismatch between what netplan expresses when using globbing
  in a netplan file and what NM understands when using a match setting.
  For instance:

  network:
  version: 2
  ethernets:
  all-en:
  match:
  name: "en*"
  dhcp4: true

  Generates a NM connection in /run/NetworkManager/system-connections:

  ...
  [match]
  interface-name=en*;
  ...

  But an NM connection can only match one interface, so if two
  interfaces like ens2 and ens3 exist, only one of them will be
  configured, even though the netplan configuration is expected to be
  applied to both.

  Solving this might involve generating one NM connection in the netplan
  plugin per detected interface.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2015243] [NEW] py3versions doesn't follow symlinks (like realpath)

2023-04-04 Thread Kostiantyn Astakhov
Public bug reported:

In case if we have more than one python version and manage them by
update-alternatives, the path to the python binary looks like:
root@devvm-14-143:~# ls -la /usr/bin/python3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Apr  4 08:11 /usr/bin/python3 ->
/etc/alternatives/python3
root@devvm-14-143:~# ls -la /etc/alternatives/python3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Apr  4 08:11 /etc/alternatives/python3 ->
/usr/bin/python3.8

So even we use the correct default version of python3 (like in Focal it
is python3.8) py3version will fail

root@devvm-14-143:~# py3versions -d
py3versions: the symlink /usr/bin/python3 does not point to the python3 default
version. It must be reset to point to python3.8

This caused due to os.readlink doesn't follow multiply symlinks, so I
suggest to use Path from pathlib.

I have attached patch with suggested changes.

  Only keep 2 kernels

Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in apt source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed
Status in apt source package in Focal:
  Fix Released
Status in apt source package in Impish:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  APT currently keeps 3 kernels or even 4 in some releases. Our boot partition
is sized for a steady state of 2 kernels + 1 new one being unpacked, hence
users run out of space and new kernels fail to install, upgrade runs might
abort in the middle. It's not nice.

  [Test plan]
  1. Have two kernels installed (let's call them version 3, 2)
  2. Check that both kernels are not autoremovable
  3. Install an old kernel (let's call it 1), and mark it automatic
  4. Check that 1 will be autoremovable (apt autoremove -s)
  5. Reboot into 1, check that 2 is autoremovable (apt autoremove -s)
  6. Actually remove 2
  7. Reboot into 3 and check that both 1 and 3 are now not autoremovable

  [Where problems could occur]
  We could keep the wrong kernels installed that the user did not expect.

  We remove the requirement to keep the most recently installed version,
  previously recorded in APT::LastInstalledKernel, to achieve this, as
  we had 3 hard requirements so far:

  1. keep booted kernel
  2. keep highest version
  3. keep most recently installed

  1 can't be removed as it would break running systems, 2 is what you
  definitely want to keep.

  During normal system lifetime, the most recently installed kernel is
  the same as the highest version, so 2==3, and there are no changes to
  behavior.

  Likewise, if you most recently installed an older kernel manually for
  debugging, it would be manually installed and not subject to removal,
  even if the rule is dropped.

  The behavior really only changes if you install an older kernel, and
  then mark it auto - that older kernel becomes automatically removable
  immediately after it is marked as auto.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1995247] Re: Leftover /tmp/apt-key.* files after updates with embedded gpg keys in deb822 sources

2023-04-04 Thread Julian Andres Klode
FWIW, the mmdebstrap issue is resolved in lunar, I'm not sure it makes a
whole lot of sense to fix kinetic to release apt 2-3 months before EOL

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  When keys are embedded into deb822 sources files as Signed-By, apt writes
them to a temporary file, but the code to delete them accidentally had an if
(0) in front of the deletion, so they don't get deleted and accumulate with
each `apt update` run.

  [Test plan]
  Including a test case for this in our comprehensive integration test suite
which runs as autopkgtest, so passing autopkgtest = good.

  [Where problems could occur]
  Files could end up being removed too soon if the code is otherwise wrong?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1978351] Re: MITM vector: ifupdown puts .domains TLD in resolv.conf

2023-04-04 Thread Marques Johansson
This is not a matter of CACHE poisoning. This is a 3rd-party owned
domain suffix being applied to every name resolution on the system.
Users deploying Kubernetes on these nodes will inherit this behavior in
kube-dns, for example.

Users' applications, package management, pods, and customer workloads
request google.com, they get google.com.domains.

$ host google.com
google.com has address 142.251.40.174
google.com has IPv6 address 2607:f8b0:4006:823::200e
google.com mail is handled by 10 smtp.google.com.

$ host google.com.domains
google.com.domains has address 18.164.96.15
google.com.domains has address 18.164.96.65
google.com.domains has address 18.164.96.63
google.com.domains has address 18.164.96.112

This extends well beyond google. Every hostname "foo.com" that is
registered on "com.domains" will be resolved to that com.domains domain.
Likewise for any TLD.

DNSSEC is not part of the configuration on Ubuntu's default package
management tools (debian, python, perl). Nor are curl, wget, or most of
the system tools that traverse the internet protected by DNSSEC.

Title:
  MITM vector: ifupdown puts .domains TLD in resolv.conf

Status in ifupdown package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The bug described in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ifupdown/+bug/1907878?comments=all
  is a security vulnerability because DNS names that would normally fail
  are now attempted as "foo.domains".

  ".domains" is a real TLD, with the registrar "Donuts, Inc." based in Bellvue,
WA.
  "google.com.domains" is registered, for example. So is "test.domains".

  For users with ifupdown, any Internet request (especially that does
  not involve some cryptographic payload and destination signature
  verification) is potentially sending packets to an unintended
  audience. It's impossible to say, but likely, that malicious
  registrants are squatting sensitive and common names in the .domains
  TLD.

  The ifupdown package is still used by some cloud providers that have not
adopted netplan.
  This vulnerability affects 22.04 and potentially other releases.

  This issue has not been corrected in 0.8.36+nmu1ubuntu4.

  With 0.8.36+nmu1ubuntu3 and after an update to 0.8.36+nmu1ubuntu4, the
  resolv.conf looks like the following (which is vulnerable to mitm
  attacks):

  ```
  root@foo:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
  # This is /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf managed by
man:systemd-resolved(8).
  # Do not edit.
  #
  # This file might be symlinked as /etc/resolv.conf. If you're looking at
  # /etc/resolv.conf and seeing this text, you have followed the symlink.
  #
  # This is a dynamic resolv.conf file for connecting local clients to the
  # internal DNS stub resolver of systemd-resolved. This file lists all
  # configured search domains.
  #
  # Run "resolvectl status" to see details about the uplink DNS servers
  # currently in use.
  #
  # Third party programs should typically not access this file directly, but
only
  # through the symlink at /etc/resolv.conf. To manage man:resolv.conf(5) in a
  # different way, replace this symlink by a static file or a different symlink.
  #
  # See man:systemd-resolved.service(8) for details about the supported modes of
  # operation for /etc/resolv.conf.
  nameserver 127.0.0.53
[Touch-packages] [Bug 2012599] Re: tzdata 2023a/2023b/2023c release - Egypt restoring DST
2023-04-04 Thread Robie Basak
Hello Dariusz, or anyone else affected,
Accepted tzdata into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tzdata/2023c-0ubuntu0.22.04.0 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.
Please help us by testing this new package.  See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.  Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.
If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.
Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!
N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.
** Changed in: tzdata (Ubuntu Jammy)
   Status: Triaged => Fix Committed
Bug description:
  [ Impact ]
  Recently the Egyptian authorities decided to restore DST. The first
  switch after the change is expected to take place on last Friday of
  April. The upstream tzdata 2023a release already reflects this change.
  The 2023a release contains the following changes:
  * Egypt now uses DST again, from April through October.
  * This year Morocco springs forward April 23, not April 30.
  * Palestine delays the start of DST this year.
  * Much of Greenland still uses DST from 2024 on.
  The 2023c release reverts the changes done in 2023b.
  [ Test Plan ]
  Test cases were added to the autopkgtest to cover the testing:
  * python: test_2023a
  * python: test_2023c
  * python: test_systemv_timezones (for releases <= 20.04 LTS)
  * python-icu: test_2023a (only for kinetic, jammy, focal)
  So the test plan is to check that the autopkgtest succeeds.
  Alternatively the python test_2023a can be run manually:
   * Set system timezone to Egypt (e.g. Africa/Cairo).
   * Set system time to 2023-04-27 23:59.
   * Wait and observe what happens at 2023-04-28 0:00
  [Test Case for releases <= 20.04 LTS]
  Additionally, an upstream update of tzdata removed the 'old' SystemV
timezones, so we should ensure that they are kept in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and
earlier releases. This is done by the test_systemv_timezones test case or can
be checked manually with the following:
  diff <(zdump -v America/Phoenix | cut -d' ' -f2-) <(zdump -v SystemV/MST7 |
cut -d' ' -f2-)
  [ Where problems could occur ]
   * Systems with incorrect timezone set (e.g. located outside of Egypt
  but still using Egyptian time) may observe unexpected time shift.
  [ Other Info ]
  The autopkgtest for chrony is flaky on jammy and kinetic (see bug
  #2002910).
Using valgrind (bug 2015183) might be a simpler test right now.
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1086783] Re: New PolicyKit 0.106 changes configuration file format
2023-04-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The newer versions added support for duktape and security team reviewed
and acked the corresponding MIR bug #1997417 now, moving forward we need
to address the MIR team feedback on duktape, migrate our rules to the
new format and resolve the autopkgtest issues found in the lunar cycle
** Description changed:
  From the NEWS file:
  This is polkit 0.106. There's a major change in this release which is
  a switch from .pkla files (keyfile-format) to .rules files
  (JavaScript).
-
- We may want to hold off on the new version because it requires rewriting
- the configuration files, and adds a dependency on mozjs185, which will
- need a MIR (and getting a MIR may be problematic)
Bug description:
  # Our problem #
  During a regular update of our container environment, `systemd` (and
  the related packages libpam-systemd, libsystemd0, libudev1, systemd-
  sysv and udev) were updated from `249.11-0ubuntu3.6` to
  `249.11-0ubuntu3.7`. We're talking only about Ubuntu 22.04. Our Ubuntu
  20.04 is working fine with `systemctl daemon-reexec`.
  In my opinion, the update was not the problem because we've tried
  downgrading and tried these versions: (current) `249.11-0ubuntu3.7`,
  `249.11-0ubuntu3.6`, `249.11-0ubuntu3.4` and `249.11-0ubuntu3.3`. The
  symptoms were the same.
  # Symptoms #
  The `/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd.postinst` executes a `systemctl
  daemon-reexec` and that ended in a disaster. It seems that `systemd`
  is forgetting all it started children and tries to start nearly every
  configured service again. Naturally, the old services are still
  running, and the ports can't be opened twice and `systemd` won't give
