[Touch-packages] [Bug 2023322] Re: Unable to setup Google Online Accounts with Nvidia drivers

2023-06-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It looks like a significant proportion of webkit2gtk crashes are Nvidia-
specific and don't have retraces (which is actually a bug in
errors.ubuntu.com because that doesn't happen when debugging locally):

https://errors.ubuntu.com/?release=Ubuntu%2023.04=webkit2gtk=week

So it looks like we will need to catch a crash file and then debug it on
the original machine (apport-unpack, gdb).

Title:
  dbus-daemon segfault if group lookup fails

Status in D-Bus:
  New
Status in dbus package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS (but also tested on Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS)
  dbus version: 1.12.20-2ubuntu4.1

  This is related to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sssd/+bug/2023598, in which
  an sssd was upgraded before its libraries. This caused dbus-daemon to
  crash, which in turn ended the user's X session along with many other
  programs. It also triggered NetworkManager to exit so it was no longer
  doing DHCP renewals; he network connection was lost a few hours later
  when the lease expired.

  The failure of dbus-daemon was triggered by it reloading its
  configuration while group lookups were not functioning, which revealed
  an error in the dbus's error handling code.

  The failure happened in two stages.

  First, it failed to load the policy, and reported this error:
  dbus-daemon[1207]: Unable to reload configuration: (null)

  Then, a few seconds later, dbus-daemon reloaded its config again, and
  this time it segfaulted.

  dbus-daemon[1207]: segfault at 0 ip 5602b18336e4 sp 7ffe2579de28
error 6 in dbus-daemon[5602b181b000+24000]
  Code: 00 00 00 48 83 c4 08 c3 66 66 2e 0f 1f 84 00 00 00 00 00 0f 1f 00 f3 0f
1e fa 83 07 01 48 89 f8 c3
0f 1f 44 00 00 f3 0f 1e fa <83> 2f 01 74 07 c3 66 0f 1f 44 00 00 e9 bb
fb ff ff 66 66 2e 0f 1f

  The code corresponds to policy->refcount -= 1, inside
  bus_client_policy_unref(). This error can only happen if policy was
  NULL on entry.

  bus_connections_reload_policy() has this code:

  // connection.c line 1644
bus_client_policy_unref (d->policy);
d->policy = bus_context_create_client_policy (connections->context,
  connection,
  error);
if (d->policy == NULL)
  {
_dbus_verbose ("Failed to create security policy for connection
%p\n",
connection);
_DBUS_ASSERT_ERROR_IS_SET (error);
return FALSE;
  }

  If bus_context_create_client_policy fails, the code decrements the
  policy reference count and sets d->policy to NULL. The second time
  round, the reference count is decremented again, but policy is already
  NULL from last time round, hence the crash.

  I've included a patch that I think should fix the error, but note that
  it is not well tested!

  Peter

Hello! This is my first time submitting a bug report, so apologies if
I'm not as helpful as I should be.

I'm currently successfully building `libwebkitgtk-5.0`, and I've embedded it as
part of developing a new browser project.
I was originally using the stable release of WebKitGTK from the Arch Linux
package repositories, but as part of porting my browser to GTK4 I've had to
recompile the library myself for GTK4 support (here's the script I wrote to do
this:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dirout/oku/50c1bd443ac50943b359b16e9d3a140faa604c89/build-dependencies.sh)

Presently, this build of WebKitGTK is completely blank—no content or developer
tools menu elements visible—unless I select and drag something offscreen, at
which point it becomes visible until I let go of the mouse again.
Perhaps this rendering bug is connected to the fact that I have an Nvidia GPU?
I'll need to do further testing on an old laptop I have somewhere.

Additionally, almost all page loads fail while emitting any of the following
warnings:
```
(process:70483): GLib-Net-WARNING **: 17:44:39.051:
../glib-networking/tls/gnutls/gtlscertificate-gnutls.c:161: invalid property id
3 for "private-key" of type 'GParamBoxed' in 'GTlsCertificateGnutls'
(process:67609): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: 17:13:47.931:
../subprojects/glib/gio/gtlsconnection.c:397: invalid property id 12 for
"protocol-version" of type 'GParamEnum' in 'GTlsClientConnectionGnutls'
(process:67609): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: 17:13:47.931:
../subprojects/glib/gio/gtlsconnection.c:397: invalid property id 13 for
"ciphersuite-name" of type 'GParamString' in 'GTlsClientConnectionGnutls'
```

In the browser, the page contents simply are 'Error reading data from TLS
socket: The specified session has been invalidated for some reason.' or,
sometimes, 'Could not parse HTTP response'.
This is not always reproducible, sometimes, rarely, page loads just randomly
work, but 99% of the time they don't.
I've tried Google, YouTube, Reddit, 'https://example.com', and
'https://www.iana.org/domains/reserved'.
My best guess is that this is some bug introduced in `libsoup-3.0`, maybe in
its `glib` dependency? I had to recompile `libsoup` as well, for the same
reasons I had to recompile WebKitGTK.

My biggest concern, by far, is the visibility issue. It does appear that things
are being rendered, it's just pure white unless I drag things away with my
mouse.
To be clear, every other GUI element of my GTK app is visible and working
properly, it's just the WebView which is experiencing this.

I'm running Arch Linux with GNOME DE, X11 (because Nvidia GPU), using
proprietary Nvidia drivers, with all installed packages up-to-date.

On 2021-07-25T00:18:40+00:00 Emil Sayahi wrote:

Ah, interesting. I've discovered the rendering isn't actually pure white, but
slightly darker. I ramped up my Night Shift intensity in the GNOME settings
app, and I can slightly make out some text from the WebView in a very light
grey.
The developer tools, accessed from the 'Inspect Element' context menu option,
are completely invisible, however.
Context menus, like the rest of the GTK elements, appear to be working just
fine.

I've made a discovery regarding the page loading failure.
Based on the errors, I guessed it was an issue with HTTPS.
I've been able to connect to 'http://neverssl.com/' and 'http://example.com'
(as opposed to the https version) consistently.
I'm now updating the bug report title to mention this issue

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2023322] Re: Unable to setup Google Online Accounts with Nvidia drivers

2023-06-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The main issue here looks like:

Jun 08 11:17:06 CCW-HAL kernel: WebKitWebProces[11026]: segfault at
55bd22ad9adc ip 55bd22ad9adc sp 7ffd1f6adbe8 error 14 likely on
CPU 2 (core 2, socket 0)

even though that doesn't sound the same as the upstream bugs. Maybe
we'll need to detach those...

To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  The pscc-lite package provides an open source implementation of PC/SC,
  the de-facto standard to interface Personal Computers with Smart
  Cards/Readers.

  This bug is in the upstream debian packaging, and results in the
  pcscd.socket being disabled after installation. This prevents
  automatic startup of the associated pcscd.service, thus preventing
  automatic handling of Smart Cards/Readers w/out manual intervention to
  enable the socket (which doesn't persist across reboots).

  This is especially painful for users that require Smart Authentication
  for login.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. If installed, remove and do a fresh install of the package pcscd
  (the sole version released for jammy is 1.9.5-3).

  2. Verify that the pcscd.socket is disabled:

  $ systemctl status pcscd.socket
  ○ pcscd.socket - PC/SC Smart Card Daemon Activation Socket
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/pcscd.socket; disabled; vendor
preset: enabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)
     Triggers: ● pcscd.service
   Listen: /run/pcscd/pcscd.comm (Stream)

  3. [Optional] insert a Smart Card or Crypto Token (e.g. a Yubikey or
  Nitrokey) that's known to work on Ubuntu and verify that it fails to
  work.

  Repeating the same steps with a package built with the patch attached
  to comment #27 should ensure that the socket is enabled, and that
  interaction with a Smart Card or Crypto Token should work w/out manual
  intervention.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  This is a back-ported change from upstream and is a result of a bug in
  dh_installsystemd (see comment #26). As such the risk is minimal.

  The only potential risk of failure I can come up with is a snap that
  stages the old version of the client library, as it would be looking
  in the wrong place for the socket.

  [ Other Info ]

  This bug was originally reported against Ubuntu Mate 22.04, however it
  applies to all derivatives of Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS.

  Note - while there's some disagreement as to whether this bug occurs
  100% of the time across all 22.04 installations, it's pretty clear
  from the upstream Debian bug and subsequent packaging fix that we
  should land this.

  As the upstream fix landed in 1.9.9-2 (which is already released in mantic)
only the following releases are impacted by this bug:
   - jammy
   - kinetic
   - lunar

  There does look to be 30s between the last "Lockdown: systemd-logind:

  This is mostly a frustration, but could be a security issue for some
  if they suspend the machine and walk away thinking it would be locked
  but is usable for another 30s.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1967014] Re: Lenovo Ideapad 3 screen brightness F keys not working...

2023-06-28 Thread Jaymz
I'm on 22.04.2 LTS now, not sure what kernel, but the brightness F-keys
still don't work.

I tried sudo evtest in terminal, but it says "sudo: evtest: command not
found"

  Lenovo Ideapad 3 screen brightness F keys not working...

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  As the title says, the F keys the control screen brightness (F11/F12
  on the Lenovo Ideapad 3 15ITL05 laptop I have) don't work on Ubuntu
  21.10. All other special function keys (volume up/down, lock screen,
  airplane mode, etc...) and the screen brightness slider in the top
  right-hand corner work; it's just the brightness keys that are not
  working.

  I know I can just use the slider, but it's more convenient to use the
  F keys. I hope you are working on this for a future 21.10 update.

  Also, I originally installed 20.04 and upgraded to 21.10, but even on
  20.04, those keys weren't working, either.

2023-06-28 Thread Nick Rosbrook
Can you also share the output of:

$ systemd-inhibit

Based on the your logind.conf attachment, unattended-upgrades increases
InhibitDelayMaxSec to 30s. I'm guessing there is an inhibitor that's in
place at suspend that is not being released until that max kicks in and
suspend continues.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1980679] Re: Suspend on focal takes 30s.

2023-06-28 Thread b
Yes, there is still a delay of 32s between pressing "suspend" and the
machine actually going into suspend. See attached systemd-analyze
output.

** Attachment added: "Output of systemd-analyze cat-config systemd/logind.conf"

Title:
  Suspend on focal takes 30s.

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Just upgrades my NUC from Bionic to Focal and suspend went from
  immediate (within a couple seconds) to taking a whole 30 seconds.
  While suspend is happening, the machine is still usable, mouse moves,
  applications respond, all the way until the machine actually goes to
  sleep. I don't see anything strange in kern.log that would explain the
  slowness:

  Jul 4 08:45:32 domi kernel: [342415.597918] ACPI: EC: interrupt unblocked

  There does look to be 30s between the last "Lockdown: systemd-logind:
  hibernation is restricted; see man kernel_lockdown.7" and "PM: suspend
  entry (s2idle)"

  This is mostly a frustration, but could be a security issue for some
  if they suspend the machine and walk away thinking it would be locked
  but is usable for another 30s.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2007792] Re: journald putting rotation messages into dmesg

2023-06-28 Thread Nick Rosbrook
I think that if journald hit an error trying to write to the intended
log target, it will fallback to writing to kmsg, so this might be
intended. Is there anything interesting in journald's own logs?

$ journalctl -u systemd-journald.service -b > journald.log

Also please share your journald.conf:

$ systemd-analyze cat-config systemd/journald.conf

  # GitHub Security Lab (GHSL) Vulnerability Report, accountsservice:
  `GHSL-2023-139`

  The [GitHub Security Lab](https://securitylab.github.com) team has
  identified a potential security vulnerability in
  [accountsservice](https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice).

  We are committed to working with you to help resolve this issue. In
  this report you will find everything you need to effectively
  coordinate a resolution of this issue with the GHSL team.

  If at any point you have concerns or questions about this process,
  please do not hesitate to reach out to us at `security...@github.com`
  (please include `GHSL-2023-139` as a reference).

  If you are _NOT_ the correct point of contact for this report, please
  let us know!

  ## Summary

  An unprivileged local attacker can trigger a use-after-free
  vulnerability in accountsservice by sending a D-Bus message to the
  accounts-daemon process.

  ## Product

  accountsservice

  ## Tested Version

[22.08.8-1ubuntu7](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/22.08.8-1ubuntu7)

  The bug is easier to observe on Ubuntu 23.04 than on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS,
  but it is present on both.

  ## Details

  ### Use-after-free when `throw_error` is called (`GHSL-2023-139`)

  After receiving a D-Bus [method
  call](https://dbus.freedesktop.org/doc/dbus-
  specification.html#message-protocol-types), a D-Bus server is expected
  to send either a `METHOD_RETURN` or a `ERROR` message back to the
  client, _but not both_. This is done incorrectly in several places in
  accountsservice. For example, in

[`user_change_language_authorized_cb`](https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/tree/debian/patches/0010-set-
  language.patch?h=import/22.08.8-1ubuntu7#n427):

  ```c
  static void
  user_change_language_authorized_cb (Daemon*daemon,
  User  *user,
  GDBusMethodInvocation *context,
  gpointer   data)
  {
  const gchar *language = data;
  if (!user_HOME_available (user)) {
  /* SetLanguage was probably called from a login greeter,
 and HOME not mounted and/or not decrypted.
 Hence don't save anything, or else accountsservice
 and ~/.pam_environment would become out of sync. */
  throw_error (context, ERROR_FAILED, "not access to HOME yet
so language not saved");  <= 1
  goto out;
  }
  out:
  accounts_user_complete_set_language (ACCOUNTS_USER (user), context);
<= 2
  }
  ```

  If `user_HOME_available` returns an error, then `throw_error` is
  called at 1 to send an `ERROR` message, but a regular `METHOD_RETURN`
  is also sent at 2. This is incorrect D-Bus protocol, but the more
  serious problem is that it causes a use-after-free because both
  `throw_error` and `accounts_user_complete_set_language` decrease the
  reference count on `context`. In other words, `context` is freed by
  `throw_error` and a UAF occurs in
  `accounts_user_complete_set_language`.

  An attacker can trigger the bug above by causing `user_HOME_available`
  to fail, which they can do by deleting all the files from their home
  directory. But there are other incorrect uses of `throw_error` in
  `user.c` which are less inconvenient to trigger. For example, this
  command triggers a call to `throw_error` in `user_update_environment`
  due to the invalid characters in the string.

  ```bash
  dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.Accounts
/org/freedesktop/Accounts/User`id -u` org.freedesktop.Accounts.User.SetLanguage
string:'**'
  ```

  On Ubuntu 23.04, the above command causes `accounts-daemon` to crash
  with a `SIGSEGV`. But on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS it doesn't cause any visible
  harm. The difference is due to a recent [change in

GLib's](https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/commit/69e9ba80e2f4d2061a1a68d72bae1c32c1e4f8fa)
  memory allocation: older versions of GLib used the "slice" allocator,
  but newer version uses the system allocator. The system allocator
  trashes the memory when it's freed in a way that causes the use-after-
  free to trigger a

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Users cannot open a hyperlink in a PDF opened with evince when the default
browser is a snap.
   * The fix creates a snap_browsers abstraction on AppArmor which can be used
in a transition for when the browser is executed. The snap_browsers abstraction
provides the minimal amount of permissions required to execute a browser
provided through snaps. This is a workaround since AppArmor currently does not
provide mediation/filtering on enhanced environment variables.

  [Test Plan]

   * Make sure the default browser is provided through the snap store.
   * Open a PDF that contains a hyperlink using evince and click on the URL.
   * The browser should open the requested URL.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * If the browser or snap core update to have new requirements for
  opening a browser, then the current policy could become obsolete and
  will need to be updated again.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I suspect a support site would be more appropriate, e.g.
https://askubuntu.com, or for more options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709.

  # GitHub Security Lab (GHSL) Vulnerability Report, accountsservice:
  `GHSL-2023-139`

  The [GitHub Security Lab](https://securitylab.github.com) team has
  identified a potential security vulnerability in
  [accountsservice](https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice).

  We are committed to working with you to help resolve this issue. In
  this report you will find everything you need to effectively
  coordinate a resolution of this issue with the GHSL team.

  If at any point you have concerns or questions about this process,
  please do not hesitate to reach out to us at `security...@github.com`
  (please include `GHSL-2023-139` as a reference).

  If you are _NOT_ the correct point of contact for this report, please
  let us know!

  ## Summary

  An unprivileged local attacker can trigger a use-after-free
  vulnerability in accountsservice by sending a D-Bus message to the
  accounts-daemon process.

  ## Product

  accountsservice

  ## Tested Version

[22.08.8-1ubuntu7](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/22.08.8-1ubuntu7)

  The bug is easier to observe on Ubuntu 23.04 than on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS,
  but it is present on both.

  ## Details

  ### Use-after-free when `throw_error` is called (`GHSL-2023-139`)

  After receiving a D-Bus [method
  call](https://dbus.freedesktop.org/doc/dbus-
  specification.html#message-protocol-types), a D-Bus server is expected
  to send either a `METHOD_RETURN` or a `ERROR` message back to the
  client, _but not both_. This is done incorrectly in several places in
  accountsservice. For example, in

[`user_change_language_authorized_cb`](https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/tree/debian/patches/0010-set-
  language.patch?h=import/22.08.8-1ubuntu7#n427):

  ```c
  static void
  user_change_language_authorized_cb (Daemon*daemon,
  User  *user,
  GDBusMethodInvocation *context,
  gpointer   data)
  {
  const gchar *language = data;
  if (!user_HOME_available (user)) {
  /* SetLanguage was probably called from a login greeter,
 and HOME not mounted and/or not decrypted.
 Hence don't save anything, or else accountsservice
 and ~/.pam_environment would become out of sync. */
  throw_error (context, ERROR_FAILED, "not access to HOME yet
so language not saved");  <= 1
  goto out;
  }
  out:
  accounts_user_complete_set_language (ACCOUNTS_USER (user), context);
<= 2
  }
  ```

  ```bash
  dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.Accounts
/org/freedesktop/Accounts/User`id -u` org.freedesktop.Accounts.User.SetLanguage
string:'**'
  ```

  On Ubuntu 23.04, the above command causes `accounts-daemon` to crash
  with a `SIGSEGV`. But on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS it doesn't cause any visible
  harm. The difference is due to a recent [change in

GLib's](https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/commit/69e9ba80e2f4d2061a1a68d72bae1c32c1e4f8fa)
  memory allocation: older versions of GLib used the "slice" allocator,
  but newer version uses the system allocator. The system allocator
  trashes the memory when it's freed in a way

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2024560] Re: Check if 0010-set-language needs to be update for the new languages property

2023-06-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
It's probably because you still have that colon separated list in your
keyfile in /var/lib/AccountsService/users after having played with
version 23.13.9-1ubuntu1.

* Go to Settings -> Region & Language (it will complain there too)

* Change the language to French, which alters the applicable keyfile
entry to "Languages=fr;"

Does that fix it?

Run the command "rfkill list", does your wifi interface show up in the output?

Also check the output of "ip link".

If it's not showing up it might be a problem with the kernel driver or
the hardware itself.

You could try to install the kernel 5.19 to see if it fixes the problem.

But as far as I can see it's not a problem with Network Manager.

I do not think there can be anything more concrete.
I think I have followed everything prescribed (yes it is time consuming for me
to read all that tons of text, but do wonder - I did it..)

Now, if you guys do not have capacity to investigate, it'd be quite fair to
admit that, rather than trying to cover it and discourage users from insisting
on solution, by figuring out tasks like:
First kill 6 heads dragon and bring bring three golden feathers from the
phoenix firebird ;)

2023-06-28 Thread Raphael Raccuia
I didn't change option in logind.conf, only in GUI setings. To be honest I
don't remember exactly what I dit try or not three years ago.
I've now a new computer and a new version of Mint (Mint 21.1 on Lenovo Thinkpad
P15s), the issue remains the same: after using and unplug a beamer, the setting
in [gestion d'alimentation] "do nothing when lid is closed" is overridden.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1463846] Re: if ip is specified on cmdline, networking should be brought up in initramfs

This bug was fixed in the package initramfs-tools - 0.142ubuntu6

initramfs-tools (0.142ubuntu6) mantic; urgency=medium

  * To ease testing, always use the link-layer address as DHCP unique
identifier (DUID-LL) for DHCPv6.
  * Drop direct dependency on isc-dhcp-client (it's not available on i386)
  * Add qemu-net-dnsmasq autopkgtest to test DHCPv6

Bug description:
  if the initramfs has 'ip=' on the cmdline, it is arguable that we
  should bring the respective interface up as indicated.

  Currently, initramfs only does this if something thinks it should.

  Ie, open-iscsi might do it, or some other things might call
'configure_networking'.
  But it seems reasonable that if the user put 'ip=' on the cmdline then they
wanted that to happen in initramfs.

  Additionally, one feature i'd like to have (admittedly for debug
  purposes) is the ability to write the /run/initramfs/open-
  iscsi.interface file that is used at least by open-iscsi to say "do
  not bring this interface down".

  I've done this before, the code to do it is available in intramfs-tools style
module at

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~smoser/maas/maas-pkg-test/files/head:/ephemtest-vivid/initrd-updates/

  generically, it seems like it'd be nice to have a way to have the same
  functionality that open-iscsi.interface accomplishes but not tied to
  open-iscsi. Ie, the user may for any reason want to keep a network
  from getting re-configured by normal OS bringup. I used
  '/run/network/initramfs-persistent-iface' file to do that.

  that is explicitly to patch over an existing initramfs (no 'hooks'
  directory).
