[Touch-packages] [Bug 1989073] Re: AppArmor DENIES reading of /sys/devices/system/cpu/possible

2023-10-09 Thread Martin Pitt
Similar issue: https://gitlab.com/libvirt/libvirt/-/issues/548 . These
two may want a common fix with "allow qemu to read sysfs"?

Bug description:

  Creating a VM with virt-install produces this AppAmore denial:

  AVC apparmor="DENIED" operation="open"

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2036467] Re: Resizing cloud-images occasionally fails due to superblock checksum mismatch in resize2fs

2023-10-09 Thread Matthew Ruffell
@juliank I'm just doing a little bit more testing for the moment, as I
really want to make sure this isn't going to cause any issues in the
cloud images. It would be nice to have this bug fixed though, I have
seen a few cases related to it over the years.

I'll ask my SEG colleagues for help with sponsoring in a day or two.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  This is a long running bug plaguing cloud-images, where on a rare
  occasion resize2fs would fail and the image would not resize to fit
  the entire disk.

  Online resizes would fail due to a superblock checksum mismatch, where
  the superblock in memory differs from what is currently on disk due to
  changes made to the image.

  Changing the read of the superblock to Direct I/O solves the issue.

  [Testcase]

  Start an c5.large instance on AWS, and attach a 60gb gp3 volume for
  use as a scratch disk.

  Run the following script, courtesy of Krister Johansen and his team:

 #!/usr/bin/bash
 set -euxo pipefail

 while true
 do
 parted /dev/nvme1n1 mklabel gpt mkpart primary 2048s 2099200s
 sleep .5
 mkfs.ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1
 mount -t ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1 /mnt
 stress-ng --temp-path /mnt -D 4 &
 STRESS_PID=$!
 sleep 1
 growpart /dev/nvme1n1 1
 resize2fs /dev/nvme1n1p1
 kill $STRESS_PID
 wait $STRESS_PID
 umount /mnt
 wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1p1
 wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1
 done

  Test packages are available in the following ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/lp2036467-test

  If you install the test packages, the race no longer occurs.

  [Where problems could occur]

  We are changing how resize2fs reads the superblock from underlying
  disks.

  If a regression were to occur, resize2fs could fail to resize offline
  or online volumes. As all cloud-images are online resized during their
  initial boot, this could have a large impact to public and private
  clouds should a regression occur.

  This was fixed in the below commit upstream:

  Author: Theodore Ts'o

  The commit has not been tagged to any release. All supported Ubuntu
  releases require this fix, and need to be published in standard non-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2038813] Re: Nvidia Driver External Display Stability Issues

2023-10-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is usually a problem with display connection quality. Please try a
different HDMI cable.

Also next time the problem happens please run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
  grep . /sys/class/drm/*/status > connections.txt
  sudo apt install drm-info
  drm_info > drminfo.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2016318] Re: free command: in Italian header is misaligned and wrongly translated

2023-10-09 Thread Vincenzo Tibullo
In 22.04 the translation was better, it is the case to revert to that?

enzotib@ubuntu-enzo:~$ free -m
   totale utilizzato buff/cache condivisa libera disponibile
Mem:   156707635 53811387495
6561
Swap:  31999   9   31990

enzotib@ubuntu-enzo:~$ LC_ALL=C free -m
   totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache
available
Mem:   156707634 53911387495
6561
Swap:  31999   9   31990

Still "buff/cache" and "libera" should be exchanged, and the words should be
right aligned with numbers.
Also use feminine for "utilizzato"

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2016318] Re: free command: in Italian header is misaligned and wrongly translated

2023-10-09 Thread Mattia Rizzolo
@salvatorecocuzza I added two new suggestions on launchpad to the
relevant strings. I noted that it was you that last touched those
strings, according to LP.

Note that those two strings are not sentences, but rather part of a
"table", describing memory usages (as such, I declined the word to
feminine, "memoria liber_A_", etc).

I'm not clear about the alignment requirements here, but I reckon this
already should be good enough.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2038765] Re: df: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: Invalid argument causes installation crash

2023-10-09 Thread fossfreedom
After installing via the legacy iso I saw the same message on login.

Opening a terminal and typing df I saw again the same message in the
terminal followed by the normal df output.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2002043] Re: Python extension modules get built using wrong compiler flags with python2

2023-10-09 Thread Fabio Augusto Miranda Martins
Hi Nafees, I discussed this with Mitchell and we are still looking into
the best possible way to move forward with this SRU. We'll keep this bug
update as soon as we have some more details to share.

Bug description:
  Compiling a Python extension using Python2 (Python 2.7.18) is making
  use of wrong compiler flags, hence dropping required optimizations
  when required. This is happening only when python2 is installed from
  Ubuntu's repositories. By default, Python's distutils module uses
  compiler and linker flags used to compile Python itself to be used to
  compile extensions.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) On Ubuntu 20.04, install python2 using apt package manager.
  2) After successful installation, verify the CFLAGS variable from sysconfig
module. On my machine, the output is

  Python 2.7.18 (default, Jul  1 2022, 12:27:04)
  [GCC 9.4.0] on linux2
  Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
  >>> import sysconfig
  >>> sysconfig.get_config_var('CFLAGS')
  '-fno-strict-aliasing -DNDEBUG -g -fwrapv -O2 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
-Wdate-time -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -g
-fdebug-prefix-map=/build/python2.7-vvQ8AI/python2.7-2.7.18=.
-fstack-protector-strong -Wformat -Werror=format-security  '

  3) Build a test extension module using python2 and verify the compilation
flags.
  python2 setup.py build_ext --inplace

  Output from below command is not matching with our expected above CFLAGS.
  aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc -pthread -fno-strict-aliasing -Wdate-time
-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -g
-fdebug-prefix-map=/build/python2.7-vvQ8AI/python2.7-2.7.18=.
-fstack-protector-strong -Wformat -Werror=format-security -fPIC
-I/usr/include/python2.7 -c testmodule.c -o
build/temp.linux-aarch64-2.7/testmodule.o

  On further investigation, it looks like Ubuntu's specific patch applied on
libpython2.7-stdlib package is altering the original upstream implementation of
distutils/sysconfig.py code.

  Package - https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/libpython2.7-stdlib
  Patch -
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/python2.7/python2.7_2.7.18-1~20.04.3.diff.gz

  Below is the code block which is causing the issue, where the presence of
configure_cflags is modifying cflags. This code is result of ubuntu's patch and
doesn't come directly from upstream python implementation.
  File - /usr/lib/python2.7/distutils/sysconfig.py
  Part of code block:
  elif configure_cflags:
  cflags = ' '.join(str(x) for x in (basecflags, configure_cflags,
extra_cflags) if x)
  ldshared = ldshared + ' ' + configure_cflags

  I don't see problem on Python3 though we have extra code added from patch
there as well. Patch used on python3, is not modifying the cflags completely
and instead appending new flags to cflags.
  On python3 (tested on Ubuntu 20.04)
  File - /usr/lib/python3.8/distutils/sysconfig.py
  Part of code block which doesn't alter cflags completely
  elif configure_cflags:
  cflags = cflags + ' ' + configure_cflags
  ldshared = ldshared + ' ' + configure_cflags

  Request to update the python2 patch to behave similar to what is been done on
python3.

  testing process follows:

  1) Launch xeyes
  2) pkill -11 xeyes
  3) Click send in the apport dialog
  4) ls -lh /var/crash

  I would expect there to be three files in /var/crash:

  -rw-r- 1 bdmurray whoopsie  3370567 Oct  6 11:53 _usr_bin_xeyes.1000.crash
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 bdmurray bdmurray0 Oct  6 11:53

  -rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie   37 Oct  6 11:53
_usr_bin_xeyes.1000.uploaded

  However, after step #4 I'm only seeing the .crash file and not a
  .upload or .uploaded. I was able to get the .upload and .uploaded
  files created if I chose to "View Report" and then click "Send".

  It's worth noting though that I did notice the size of the .crash file
  increase after clicking "Send" so some post-processing was done.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1951491] Re: Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup

2023-10-09 Thread Alexander Au
Thanks for your comments and workarounds, I was using nomachine at a
headless server with run target set to multi-user instead of graphical,
and Firefox had this problem in the xsession created by nomachine.

My workaround is to edit the Firefox script itself, handily,
/usr/bin/Firefox is a script instead of a binary, so I added

unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

towards the end of the script just before the last line calling
presumably the Firefox binary.

Works like a charm, and feels good to know that only Firefox will be
affected in case other programs need the DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS to
function properly.

Hope it helps.

Bug description:
  I just upgraded from hirsute to impish using do-release-upgrade. On
  the upgraded system, I can't run either firefox or chromium (both of
  which worked fine under hirsute). Both fail with:

  /user.slice/user-NNN.slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup where
  NNN is my uid

  With firefox, I was able to fix the problem with:

  snap remove --purge firefox
  apt purge firefox
  apt install firefox

  Now firefox works. But I tried the same thing substituting chromium-
  browser for firefox, and it didn't help: chromium fails with the same
  error message.

  I guess there must be something left over from the hirsute version of
  snapd that isn't getting noticed or cleared by the impish version?

  Someone suggested this might be related to bug 1850667, but that bug
  is marked fixed as of a couple months ago, and I just did this upgrade
  today. Also, it doesn't mention the error message I'm seeing.

Bug description:
  On my impish development host machine I tend to use lxd containers to
  support snap building and other tasks targeting different releases.
  Today I came to use a bionic container as per usual and found that I
  could not invoke any snap applications. I installed hello-world as the
  most simple test of running a snap app:

  ```
  ubuntu@b:~$ hello-world
  internal error, please report: running "hello-world" failed: transient scope
could not be started, job /org/freedesktop/systemd1/job/44 finished with result
failed
  ```

  I made sure the container had up to date packages in it (apt & snaps)
  and rebooted it. But the problem persisted. I then created a second
  container and installed hello-world in it and again the problem was
  reproducible. At the time of producing the following attachments I had
  not attempted to reboot the host.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2038650] Re: crash reports not sent to the Error Tracker

Bug description:
  From what I can tell when I click the send button to send a crash
  report to the Error Tracker the crash doesn't actually get sent. My
  testing process follows:

  1) Launch xeyes
  2) pkill -11 xeyes
  3) Click send in the apport dialog
  4) ls -lh /var/crash

  I would expect there to be three files in /var/crash:

  -rw-r- 1 bdmurray whoopsie  3370567 Oct  6 11:53 _usr_bin_xeyes.1000.crash
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 bdmurray bdmurray0 Oct  6 11:53
_usr_bin_xeyes.1000.upload
  -rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie   37 Oct  6 11:53
_usr_bin_xeyes.1000.uploaded

  However, after step #4 I'm only seeing the .crash file and not a
  .upload or .uploaded. I was able to get the .upload and .uploaded
  files created if I chose to "View Report" and then click "Send".

  It's worth noting though that I did notice the size of the .crash file
  increase after clicking "Send" so some post-processing was done.

  This is a regression in our test that will block 23.10 cloud image

 #!/usr/bin/bash
 set -euxo pipefail

 while true
 do
 parted /dev/nvme1n1 mklabel gpt mkpart primary 2048s 2099200s
 sleep .5
 mkfs.ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1
 mount -t ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1 /mnt
 stress-ng --temp-path /mnt -D 4 &
 STRESS_PID=$!
 sleep 1
 growpart /dev/nvme1n1 1
 resize2fs /dev/nvme1n1p1
 kill $STRESS_PID
 wait $STRESS_PID
 umount /mnt
 wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1p1
 wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1

@mruffel did you mean to get sponsoring for the patches? you might then
want to subscribe ~ubuntu-sponsors so this can be merged by the patch

 #!/usr/bin/bash
 set -euxo pipefail

 while true
 do
 parted /dev/nvme1n1 mklabel gpt mkpart primary 2048s 2099200s
 sleep .5
 mkfs.ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1
 mount -t ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1 /mnt
 stress-ng --temp-path /mnt -D 4 &
 STRESS_PID=$!
 sleep 1
 growpart /dev/nvme1n1 1
 resize2fs /dev/nvme1n1p1
 kill $STRESS_PID
 wait $STRESS_PID
 umount /mnt
 wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1p1
 wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1

All supported Ubuntu
  releases require this fix, and need to be published in standard non-
  ESM archives to be picked up in cloud images.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2038650] Re: crash reports not sent to the Error Tracker

2023-10-09 Thread Simon Chopin
This was caused by the addition of this feature:
https://github.com/canonical/apport/pull/131

It broke an assumption that Dependencies was only added by the late
stage info collection, and said collection also had some other side-
effects that were relied upon to trigger the upload.

I'll create a hotfix patch for it this afternoon to unlock the
situation, and we'll work on a less fragile approach when Benjamin comes
back from PTO.

  crash reports not sent to the Error Tracker

Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  From what I can tell when I click the send button to send a crash
  report to the Error Tracker the crash doesn't actually get sent. My
  testing process follows:

  1) Launch xeyes
  2) pkill -11 xeyes
  3) Click send in the apport dialog
  4) ls -lh /var/crash

  I would expect there to be three files in /var/crash:

  -rw-r- 1 bdmurray whoopsie  3370567 Oct  6 11:53 _usr_bin_xeyes.1000.crash
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 bdmurray bdmurray0 Oct  6 11:53
_usr_bin_xeyes.1000.upload
  -rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie   37 Oct  6 11:53
_usr_bin_xeyes.1000.uploaded

  However, after step #4 I'm only seeing the .crash file and not a
  .upload or .uploaded. I was able to get the .upload and .uploaded
  files created if I chose to "View Report" and then click "Send".

  It's worth noting though that I did notice the size of the .crash file
  increase after clicking "Send" so some post-processing was done.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2038567] Re: Disable restricting unprivileged change_profile by default, due to LXD latest/stable not yet compatible with this new apparmor feature

2023-10-09 Thread Philip Roche
cloud minimized and non minimized images have now been tested with

  Following upgrade to 6.5.0-7 kernel in mantic cloud images we are

  following:

  ```
  lxd init --auto --storage-backend dir
  The `lxc exec mantic -- cloud-init status --wait` times out after 240s
  and will fail our test as a result.
  I have been able to replicate in a local VM
  sshpass -p passw0rd ssh -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o CheckHostIP=no -o
StrictHostKeyChecking=no -p  ubuntu@127.0.0.1 ./reproducer.sh
  ```

  The issue is not present with the 6.5.0-5 kernel and the issue is
  present regardless of the container launched. I tried the jammy
  container to test this.

  From my test VM

  ```
  ubuntu@cloudimg:~$ uname --all
  Linux cloudimg 6.5.0-7-generic #7-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Sep 29
09:14:56 UTC 2023 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  ubuntu@cloudimg:~$ uname --kernel-release
  6.5.0-7-generic
  ```

  This is a regression in our test that will block 23.10 cloud image
  release next week.

2023-10-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Checking the journal errors from some reports those warnings are found

nm-device: NM-9ca0c167-eb7c-4200-8766-38707689ef3b: the renderer for nm-
devices must be NetworkManager, it will be used instead of the defined
one.

or

 [1696737400.9276] BUG: the profile cannot be stored in keyfile
format without becoming unusable: invalid connection: 802-1x: 'wpa-eap'
security requires '802-1x' setting presence

or

 [1696771280.2003] BUG: the profile cannot be stored in keyfile
format without becoming unusable: cannot access file: No such file or
directory

Unsure if some of those have to do with the netplan transition
