Title:
error "contains an invalid sample specification."

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
After upgrade network audio stop working.
On the client side in log i see:
  "CA0132 Sound Core3D [Sound Blaster Recon3D / Z-Series' contains an invalid
sample specification."
Microphone sink work, but playback not. I tried as client ubuntu 23.04 and
23.10, so I suppose issue in zeroconf-publish
Just specifying env PULSE_SERVER play sound fine.

Also will be great if zeroconf-publish can filter what to export, at
  least disable microphone.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2049318] Re: [SRU] free(): double free detected in tcache 2

2024-01-19 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Jo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted iptables into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/iptables/1.8.7-1ubuntu5.2 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

jammy's version breaks existing dhcp scripts with relay

Status in dnsmasq package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in dnsmasq source package in Jammy:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

When upgrading from focal to jammy, existing dnsmasq dhcp-scripts
stopped working in an environment where a DHCP relay is in use.
Instead of the expected client IP address, the script gets the _relay_
  IP address as an argument.

This was fixed in 2.87, therefore making only jammy carry an affected
  package.

  [ Test Plan ]

To easily test this on a single machine, a test script is being
provided to setup networking and dnsmasq configuration.

  # Launch a jammy VM

  lxc launch ubuntu-daily:jammy j-dnsmasq-2042587 --vm

  # open a root shell in that VM. All subsequent commands must be
executed as root in that VM

  lxc shell j-dnsmasq-2042587

  # download test script

  wget

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dnsmasq/+bug/2042587/+attachment/5738174/+files/setup-
  and-server.sh

  # make it executable

  chmod +x setup-and-server.sh

  # install dnsmasq. Ignore the postinst error (because systemd-resolved
is also running and there is a port conflict)

apt update && apt install dnsmasq -y

  # run the setup script. It will configure things and start dnsmasq
  ready to be tested

  ./setup-and-server.sh

  # in another root session inside the vm (so run "lxc shell
j-dnsmasq-2042587" in another terminal), run the proposed commands
from the setup script (and press ctrl-c after the result is shown):

  No DHCP relay:

ip netns exec client dhclient -d -v p2

The setup script should log an IP that is not a relay. For example:
  dnsmasq-dhcp: DHCPDISCOVER(p1) aa:a0:9d:00:5b:d6
  dnsmasq-dhcp: DHCPOFFER(p1) 192.168.47.150 aa:a0:9d:00:5b:d6
  dnsmasq-dhcp: DHCPREQUEST(p1) 192.168.47.150 aa:a0:9d:00:5b:d6
  dnsmasq-dhcp: DHCPACK(p1) 192.168.47.150 aa:a0:9d:00:5b:d6 j-dnsmasq-2042587
  ###
  IP = 192.168.47.150
  ###

With DHCP relay set to 192.168.47.9, IP should NOT be that address:

    ip netns exec client dhclient -d -v p2 -g 192.168.47.9

With the affected dnsmasq package, we will see an error:
  dnsmasq-dhcp: DHCPREQUEST(p1) 192.168.47.150 aa:a0:9d:00:5b:d6
  dnsmasq-dhcp: DHCPACK(p1) 192.168.47.150 aa:a0:9d:00:5b:d6 j-dnsmasq-2042587
  ###
  IP = 192.168.47.9
  TEST FAILED
  ###

The error is that the obtained IP is that of the dhcp relay (provided
  via the -g option).

With the fixed dnsmasq package, "TEST FAILED" must not appear, and the
IP should not be that of the provided dhcp relay.

[ Where problems could occur ]

If the fix is incorrect, it would mean the dhcp-script would get an incorrect
IP again, or perhaps we could have crashes in dnsmasq when dealing with buffers
and pointers if the dhcp-script option is in use.
This fix was committed upstream a few months after the bug was introduced, so
it took a while to be noticed.

  [ Other Info ]
  Not at this time.

dnsmasq crash when no servers in resolv.conf

dnsmasq "keeps an eye" on /etc/resolv.conf, and reloads it whenever
the file is updated. When that happens and for some reason there were
no "nameserver" declarations in the updated file, dnsmasq can crash.

Here is a log of a reproducer:

We can see the startup, then when resolv.conf is read again and no
nameservers were found, and the crash:

  S/MIME signature can fail silently
The commit by upstream propagates the return code of some functions rather
than ignore it.

  [Test plan]
This issue is not very simple to reproduce because "openssl cms" cannot be
used to do so. This has to be done with the openssl API instead.
At least the bug reportere here and the one on openssl's bug tracker have
confirmed the patch solves the issue. Additionally, the bug reporter here has
tested the PPA that contains the patche and validated it. Finally, I read
through the patch attentively.

  [Where problems could occur]
At this point it is unlikely an error would appear. The openssl bug tracker
mentions nothing related to this patch which landed more than a year ago. The
patch is simple and doesn't change the code logic.

  [Patches]
The patches come directly from upstream and apply cleanly.

  [Impact]
Openssl using an engine dumps core upon certificate creation; other
operations are probably affected too. Overall, engines are likely mostly
unusable.

  [Test plan]
  - An openssl engine is req. to test the fix.
  - A z13 / LinuxONE LPAR or z/VM guest is needed, with attached APQN.
  - Check with 'lszcrypt -V' the availability (online) of the hw crypto
resources.
  - Install the needed package that allows to exploit the hw crypto resources:
sudo apt-get install libica-utils libica? openssl-ibmca
  - And copy a working sample openssf.cnf file:
sudo cp /usr/share/doc/openssl-ibmca/examples/openssl.cnf.sample
/etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
  - Verify if the 'openssl engine' lists an ibmca engine, in addition to the
dynamic engine:
(dynamic) Dynamic engine loading support
(ibmca) Ibmca hardware engine support <===
  - try to create a new certificate, using this cmd-line:
openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -x509 -sha256 -nodes -out __cert.pem
-keyout __key.pem --subj '/CN=US'
  - The above command must not lead to a 'Segmentation fault (core dumped)',
rather than create a proper certificate file.
Also watch /var/log/syslog / journalctl for more details.
  - The issue is fixed in openssl 3.0.8 which landed in lunar.

  [Where problems could occur]
I don't pretend to understand the lifecycle of providers in openssl3 but the
patch is simple and has been widely tested by now, including on ubuntu. Thus, I
see little chance an unexpected problem would occur with it.

The patches come directly from upstream and apply cleanly.

  === SRU information ===
  [ATTENTION]
This SRU contains THREE changes which are listed in the section below.

  [Meta]
This bug is part of a series of three bugs for a single SRU.
This ( #2033422 ) is the "central" bug with the global information and
debdiff.

This SRU addresses three issues with Jammy's openssl version:
  - http://pad.lv/1994165: ignored SMIME signature errors
  - http://pad.lv/2023545: imbca engine dumps core
  - http://pad.lv/2033422: very high CPU usage for concurrent TLS connections
(this one)

The SRU information has been added to the three bug reports and I am
attaching the debdiff here only for all three.

All the patches have been included in subsequent openssl 3.0.x
releases which in turn have been included in subsequent Ubuntu
releases. There has been no report of issues when updating to these
  Ubuntu releases.

I have rebuilt the openssl versions and used abi-compliance-checker to
compare the ABIs of the libraries in jammy and the one for the SRU.
Both matched completely (FYI, mantic's matched completely too).

I have also pushed the code to git (without any attempt to make it
  git-ubuntu friendly).

https://code.launchpad.net/~adrien-n/ubuntu/+source/openssl/+git/openssl/+ref/jammy-
  sru

I asked Brian Murray about phasing speed and he concurs a slow roll-out is
probably better for openssl. There is a small uncertainty because a security
update could come before the phasing is over, effectively fast-forwarding the
SRU. Still, unless there is already a current pre-advisory, this is probably
better than a 10% phasing which is over after only a couple days anyway.
NB: at the moment openssl doesn't phase slowly so this needs to be
implemented.

  [Impact]
Severely degraded performance for concurrent operations compared to openssl
1.1. The performance is so degraded that some workloads fail due to timeouts or
insufficient resources (noone magically has 5 times more machines). As a
consequence, a number of people use openssl 1.1 instead and do not get security
updates.

  [Test plan]
Rafael Lopez has shared a simple benchmarks in http://pad.lv/2009544 with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssl/+bug/2009544/+attachment/5690224/+files/main.py
 .

  To test, follow these steps:
  - run "time python3 main.py" # using the aforementioned main.py script
  - apt install -t jammy-proposed libssl3
  - run "time python3 main.py"
  - compare the runtimes for the two main.py runs

You can run this on x86_64, Raspberry Pi 4 or any machine, and get a
very large speed-up in all cases. The improvements are not
  architecture-dependant.

Using this changeset, I get the following numbers for ten runs on my
  laptop:

  3.0.2:
  real 2m5.567s
  user 4m3.948s
  sys 2m0.233s

  this SRU:
  real 0m23.966s
  user 2m35.687s
  sys 0m1.920s

As can be easily seen, the speed-up is massive: system time is divided
by 60 and overall wall clock time is roughly five times lower.

In http://pad.lv/2009544 , Rafael also shared his performance numbers
and they are relatable to these. He used

In several stable releases of Ubuntu, Vim has information regarding
releases that are outdated. It would be optimal for Vim to grab this
data from distro-info-data (or similar), but unfortunately that is not
the case. Therefore, the list needs to be updated.

There is a minimal regression potential here; Vim simply reads a
statically-set Perl array to determine if the release in the changelog
and sources.list is supported or not. Any regression would present
itself in external tooling that detects text highlighting, which is
not a case I think we support in Ubuntu.

A simple way to test this update is to download a package from the
Lunar archive, and open the changelog with Vim. Instead of the
changelog release (e.g. "noble") showing as red, it should show as
blue. I would also suggest editing sources.list, to ensure e.g. Eoan
  shows as EOL.

I believe this could be verified by running the GDB tests inside the Rust
testing suite.
Should I queue an autopkgtest against rustc for GDB in this case?

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

   * GDB 12.1 introduced a regression where it will break program execution
when the program contains mixed ARM code and THUMB code.
   * Upstream stated they tested the changes on Ubuntu 20.04 and it went okay.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Considering the following C program:

  ```
  __attribute__((target("arm"), noinline))
  int thumb_func() {
    return 42;
  }
  __attribute__((target("thumb")))
  int main() { return thumb_func(); }
  ```

If you build it using `gcc repro.c -ggdb3 -Og -o repro` and run the
GDB using the following commands ...

  ```
  b 3
  r
  c
  ```

(you can save the contents above to a file and run GDB using `gdb -x
  script ./repro`)

... you will notice GDB broke the program and threw SIGILL.
If you run the program without GDB, the program exits normally.

[ Where problems could occur ]

   * GDB is a complex software. As the patch suggests, it may break other use
cases (like single-stepping) entirely.
   * Since this is an ARM-only patch, it's unlikely to affect other CPU
architectures. However, it is possible that this fix may break ARM64 execution.

  [ Other Info ]

   * This bug has been fixed in GDB 13, but the fix was never backported to GDB
12. You can find the upstream bug in the remote bug watch.

   * Upstream stated they tested the changes on Ubuntu 20.04 and it went okay.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Considering the following C program:

  ```
  __attribute__((target("arm"), noinline))
  int thumb_func() {
    return 42;
  }
  __attribute__((target("thumb")))
  int main() { return thumb_func(); }
  ```

If you build it using `gcc repro.c -ggdb3 -Og -o repro` and run the
GDB using the following commands ...

  ```
  b 3
  r
  c
  ```

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2047705] Re: Packaging ships /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini, forcing the GTK3 theme to Yaru and preventing flavors from overriding it with XDG configuration

Title:
Packaging ships /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini, forcing the GTK3 theme to
Yaru and preventing flavors from overriding it with XDG configuration

Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in lxqt-session package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Lubuntu uses Qt as the primary framework for most of the apps we ship.
However, some functionality we ship in Lubuntu doesn't have a Qt
application that provides that functionality, so we have some GTK3
apps that we ship as well. Starting in Lubuntu 24.04, we are adding
and enabling the breeze-gtk-theme package, providing more uniform
theming between Qt and GTK apps on Lubuntu. However, this bug makes
  this impossible.

As we do not ship xsettingsd, but instead use the XDG specification
for shipping configuration, we are attempting to place the default
configuration files for GTK2 and GTK3 theming in /etc/xdg/xdg-
  Lubuntu/gtk-2.0/gtkrc and /etc/xdg/xdg-Lubuntu/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.
This solutions works for GTK2 apps, however GTK3 apps silently ignore
the vendored configuration file and are using a different theme.

As it turns out, this is because the /etc directory is given higher
priority than /etc/xdg/xdg-Lubuntu when searching for XDG
configuration files, and as it happens, libgtk-3-0 ships a
/etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file that sets Yaru as the default theme.
GTK3 applications end up selecting this configuration file rather than
  /etc/xdg/xdg-Lubuntu/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.

/etc/gtk-3.0 is, I would argue, *not* a place where GTK3's
settings.ini file should go, as it makes it difficult for flavors who
rely on XDG configuration to override it without risking a file
conflict. (Technically I guess a flavor package *could* use dpkg-
divert to simply "get rid of" the /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file, but
that seems like the wrong way to approach this.)

I updated the tasks on this bug after having verified what has LXC_DEVEL
set to 1, so we should be good now in terms of affected releases.

In fact, the same but updated note was already on
https://documentation.ubuntu.com/lxd/en/latest/installing/#install-lxd-
from-source where it mentions that it affects 22.04 onward while the one
you dug up says 23.04/23.10 are not affected ;)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2046526] Re: pam_access Configuration Treats TTY Names as Hostnames

** Changed in: pam (Ubuntu)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2046526

Title:
pam_access Configuration Treats TTY Names as Hostnames

Status in pam package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Comments in PAM service files at /etc/pam.d/* suggest a line to
uncomment to configure complicated authorization rules using
pam_access (which in turn is configured by /etc/security/access.conf):

  /etc/pam.d/sshd:

  # Uncomment and edit /etc/security/access.conf if you need to set complex
  # access limits that are hard to express in sshd_config.
  # account required pam_access.so

  /etc/pam.d/login:

  # Uncomment and edit /etc/security/access.conf if you need to
  # set access limits.
  # (Replaces /etc/login.access file)
  # account required pam_access.so

Comments in /etc/security/access.conf indicate the origin in this file
can be a TTY or domain name:

  # The third field should be a list of one or more tty names (for
  # non-networked logins), host names, domain names (begin with "."),

I wanted to configure a user on my server, 'localadmin', who can only
log in on the console and not via any network service and tried to
achieve this using pam_access as follows:

I uncommented the default ‘account required pam_access.so’ lines in
  /etc/pam.d/sshd and /etc/pam.d/login.

I add the following in /etc/security/access.conf intending to allow
user 'localadmin' to only log in on the console:

  +:localadmin:tty1
  -:localadmin:ALL

This seems to work. Login via SSH fails and succeeds on the console,
  as expected.

However, /var/log/auth.log suspiciously indicates it is treating tty1
as a hostname during the failed SSH attempt:

  Dec 15 01:28:12 server sshd[5868]: pam_access(sshd:account): cannot
resolve hostname "tty1"
  Dec 15 01:28:12 server sshd[5868]: pam_access(sshd:account): access
denied for user `localadmin' from `10.0.0.101'

It is confirmed to be doing DNS lookups for 'tty1' in the search
  domain during the login attempt:

  admin@server:~$ resolvectl status eth0
  ...
 DNS Servers: 10.0.0.2
  DNS Domain: example.com
  admin@server:~$ sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -n port 53
  01:28:12.100348 IP 10.0.0.42.44968 > 10.0.0.2.53: 21558+ [1au] A?
tty1.example.com. (45)
  01:28:12.100666 IP 10.0.0.42.44669 > 10.0.0.2.53: 40453+ [1au] ?
tty1.example.com. (45)
  01:28:12.103027 IP 10.0.0.2.53 > 10.0.0.42.44968: 21558 NXDomain* 0/1/1
(95)
  01:28:12.103027 IP 10.0.0.2.53 > 10.0.0.42.44669: 40453 NXDomain* 0/1/1
(95)

I configured my DNS service to resolve hostname 'tty1' to the IP
address the SSH connection originates from:

  admin@server:~$ dig +short tty1.example.com
  10.0.0.101

SSH access is then unexpectedly allowed:

  user@clienthost:~$ ip -4 a show dev eth0
  inet 10.0.0.101/24 ...
  user@clienthost:~$ ssh localadmin@10.0.0.42
  localadmin@10.0.0.42's password:
  localadmin@server:~$

I think the local origins should be completely separated from network
origins in /etc/security/access.conf somehow (maybe with separate
access.conf files used for local and network PAM services).

include the output of `nmcli -f all con`. This lists all wifi SSIDs
that the user has ever connected to, and the date of last connection.
I think this is a privacy problem, as it tends to reveal the user's
recent whereabouts, and it's posted publicly on launchpad. (Imagine
for instance an entry for "LoveMotelGuestWifi" at a time when the user
had said they were at the office...)

It is disclosed to the user before the report is sent, but only if
they think to expand that item in the "Send / Don't send" dialog
(which is not descriptively labeled), and there is no way to opt out
of it. You can delete it manually from launchpad afterward, which is
what I am going to do with this bug report, but I doubt most people
  would know to do that.

This info should probably not be included at all, or if it is, it
should be sanitized. Also, it might be a good idea to purge launchpad
  of all such files.

(Marking this as "security" in case you consider this kind of a
privacy leak to be something the security team should handle. If not,
feel free to demote it to an ordinary bug.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2039873] Re: liblxc-dev was built with LXC_DEVEL=1 in Ubuntu 22.04 and later releases

2024-01-19 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Food for thought for an SRU, here is an example of an upstream that
noted[1] this problem:

NOTE: If you use the `liblxc-dev` package and get compile time errors
when building the `go-lxc` module,
ensure that the value for `LXC_DEVEL` is `0` for your `liblxc` build. To check
that, look at `/usr/include/lxc/version.h`.
If the `LXC_DEVEL` value is `1`, replace it with `0` to work around the
problem. It's a packaging bug, and
we are aware of it for Ubuntu 22.04/22.10. Ubuntu 23.04/23.10 does not have
this problem.

is disabled. That's why we should *not* have LXC_DEVEL=1 for *any* release
build of LXC.

  [ Test Plan ]

Install liblxc-dev package and check /usr/include/lxc/version.h file
  LXC_DEVEL should be 0

[ Where problems could occur ]

Theoretically, build of a software which depends on liblxc-dev may start to
fail
if it assumes that LXC_DEVEL is 1.

2024-01-19 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2039873] Re: liblxc-dev was built with LXC_DEVEL=1 in Ubuntu 22.04 and later releases

2024-01-19 Thread Andreas Hasenack
I imported your noble debdiff and pushed to this branch:

https://code.launchpad.net/~ahasenack/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+git/lxc/+ref/noble-
lxc-drop-devel-2039873

If you run "git ubuntu clone lxc; cd lxc; git ubuntu remote add
ahasenack; git checkout noble-lxc-drop-devel-2039873" you should have a
local copy. Or if using just git, not git-ubuntu, follow the
instructions from the URL above.

Regarding the new d/t/build dep8 test:

"""
d/t/control:
Tests: build
Restrictions: allow-stderr superficial

d/t/build:
#!/bin/sh
# autopkgtest check: very basic checks to ensure that LXC package is in a good
shape

set -eux

# ensure that LXC_DEVEL is 0
grep "LXC_DEVEL" meson.build | grep 0
"""

a) being marked as superficial won't block a migration if it fails (IIRC: at
least, it's definitely not a hard error). And we do want this to "stop the
line" if it fails, right?

b) it's checking something from the source code, which could be later
changed via d/rules during build. What I mean is that this is not the
place users will get the value of LXC_DEVEL from. We should be checking
the include file that gets installed on the user's system, either via
grep, or preferably a small C program that includes that version.h file
and checks the value of LXC_DEVEL.

c) A DEP8 test is awesome, thanks for that. But it might too close to a
release for such a check. Imagine an SRU gets sponsored, then reviewed,
then accepted, and then we get the DEP8 result that says "oops,
LXC_DEVEL=1 is leaking again". How about also checking it during package
build? I won't block the upload on this, though, but it would be good to
have I think, even if later.

What are your thoughts on (a) and (b)?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1958019]

2024-01-19 Thread darinsmiller
Canonical occasionally breaks sound compatibility between kernel release
(but I yet to figure out why). However, the XanMod kernel quite rarely
breaks Lenovo sound compatibility, thus I suggest you give that kernel a
whirl: https://xanmod.org/ (It's quite easy to install and remove if
needed).

Yes, it was added in 5.18. It is broken in 6.x. That's why I still only run
5.19 on my machine. The comment below says it actually stopped working in 6.6.
I can't confirm that it worked in any earlier 6.x kernels, I had no luck with

I have been lurking on this thread for a while. This thread has been up
and still active since 2020, I don't even know where / which suggestions
I need to start following.

I have 16ACHg6 too, (Alsa says that) it's running Realtek ALC287. I have
a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04 with kernel 6.5.0-14-generic, I have
updated my BIOS and internal speakers hasn't been working at all since
the first day. External speakers (headphone, Bluetooth speakers) work
just fine though. Still no luck with 16ACHg6 then ?

Bug description:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2047450] Please test proposed package

2024-01-19 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello dann, or anyone else affected,

Accepted coreutils into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/coreutils/8.32-4.1ubuntu1.1 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Status in coreutils source package in Lunar:

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Ubuntu provides 64K page size kernels for ppc64el (always) and arm64
(optional -64k flavors). When booted on 64K kernels, tail emits no output when
tailing a sysfs file. The difference in behavior can be a source for bugs in
scripts that use tail, and general user confusion.

  [Test Plan]
The upstream fix includes a test case that tails the /sys/kernel/profiling
file, if it exists. That case would fail with an unfixed coreutils package as
shown below:

  = When booted on a 4K kernel =
  ubuntu@gunyolk:~$ tail /sys/kernel/profiling
  0

  = When booted on a 64K kernel =
  ubuntu@gunyolk:~$ tail /sys/kernel/profiling
  ubuntu@gunyolk:~$

Since the upstream test cases are executed at build time, the existing
tests and this new test will be used to regression test behavior.
This should cover both 4K (!ppc64el) and 64K (ppc64el) cases. We
should also do a manual verification on arm64 w/ the 64K kernel since
that case is not covered by our builders.

  [Where Problems Could Occur]
The biggest risk for a regression I see is due to the side-effect of the fix
now allocating a dynamic buffer instead of the stack. An error in logic there
could cause a crash or a memory leak in scenarios undetected during testing. I
used valgrind when developing the fix to derisk the memory leak scenario.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2049540] Re: hundreds of differences in module list between initramfs-tools version 0.142ubuntu10 and version 0.142ubuntu11

2024-01-19 Thread Benjamin Drung
What is the problem here? Is there any proof that these modules are
needed?

These four commit refer to bug #2031841 and cause the difference:

Filter net kernel modules by symbol regexp from dracut
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/commit/?id=55a7cf12c037ccd14a0241aa8cab085f6f8590d8

Filter block kernel modules by symbol regex from dracut
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/commit/?id=7ef0f4f446abe98434dcd2410247f95b0983

Install all usb/typec kernel modules
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/commit/?id=aa8821f6ad59d9ce8f8cacddc5f8ae7e41178b71

Do not install ARM/RISCV specific modules on other architectures
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/commit/?id=2df78bbb143884b9601a32608e12e43d40ccb0b0

Using symbol regexes will be more fine-grained than including whole
directories.

When analyzing the kernel modules present in the current initrd, I
have found that there are hundreds of such differences, and that this
started with the move to dracut.

I believe that the move to dracut was intended to be relatively module
neutral - see LP: #2031841 and LP: #2042710 for more details on that.

I'm attaching here a test case based on podman, where different
versions of the initramfs-tools package are installed, and then the
list of modules present in the initrd is analyzed.

  [Impact]
The graphics HWE stack from mantic needs to be backported for 22.04.4

  directx-headers
  - build-dep of the new Mesa

  mesa
  - new major release (23.2.x)
  - new HW support, Meteor Lake..

  [Test case]
We want to cover at least 2-3 different, widely used and already previously
supported GPU generations from both AMD and Intel which are supported by this
release, as those are the ones that cover most bases; nouveau users tend to
switch to the NVIDIA blob after installation. No need to test ancient GPU's
supported by mesa-amber. And best to focus on the newer generations (~5y and
newer) as the older ones are less likely to break at this point.
  - AMD: Vega, Navi1x (RX5000*), Navi2x (RX6000*), Navi3x (RX7000*)
  - Intel: gen9 (SKL/APL/KBL/CFL/WHL/CML), gen11 (ICL), gen12 (TGL/RKL/RPL/DG2)

Install the new packages and run some tests:
  - check that the desktop is still using hw acceleration and hasn't fallen
back to swrast/llvmpipe
  - run freely available benchmarks that torture the GPU (Unigine
Heaven/Valley/Superposition)
  - run some games from Steam if possible

and in each case check that there is no gfx corruption happening or
  worse.

Note that upstream releases have already been tested for OpenGL and
  Vulkan conformance by their CI.

  [Where things could go wrong]
This is a major update of Mesa, there could be regressions but we'll try to
catch any with testing. And since it shares bugs with mantic, we'd already know
if there are serious issues. We will backport the final 23.2.x at a later
stage, the first backport is needed for enabling Intel Meteor Lake.

Bug description:
Tool "iconv" suffers from the stdio buffering problem described here:

  https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14472179/how-do-i-perform-a-

Basically, when piping to iconv in an interactive session, output
stutters. Tool "stdbuf" does not help. From the page above: "But it
looks like iconv is managing the buffering internally itself - it's
nothing to do with the Linux pipe buffer."

Solutions are described in this page:

  http://www.pixelbeat.org/programming/stdio_buffering/

iconv should have a command-line switch to help. From the page above:

"Note tail's stdout buffer would also have this problem, but tail -f calls
fflush

(as do tcpdump -l, grep --line-buffered and sed --unbuffered for example)."

  [known workaround]
  Use `recode` instead.

Title:
  iptables-1.8.7/iptables/tests/shell/testcases/nft-only/0009-needless-
  bitwise_0 fails on s390x

Status in iptables:
  Unknown
Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:
  In Progress
Status in iptables package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
In Ubuntu, we execute the full iptables shell testcases across all
  architectures.

They seem to all pass everywhere, however

  iptables-1.8.7/iptables/tests/shell/testcases/nft-only/0009-needless-
  bitwise_0

is currently failing on s390x like so:

  command17FAIL stderr: W: [FAILED] ././testcases/nft-
  only/0009-needless-bitwise_0: expected 0 but got 1

i wonder if there is some endian bug, as this is currently Ubuntu's
  only big-endian architecture.

  this can be reproduced with:

  pull-lp-source iptables
  cd iptables-1.8.7/
  chmod +x ./iptables/tests/shell/testcases/iptables/0007-zero-counters_0
  cd iptables/tests/shell
  sudo ./run-tests.sh --host

2024-01-19 Thread James Page
The oslo.versionedobjects autopkgtests appear to be broken in Debian
(but working in the 0ubuntu1 version we had before); I'll untangle this
and upload a merged version to fix this.

Looking at the history of autopkgtest runs, it looks like that the

  test_link_local_ipv4 (__main__.TestNetworkd.test_link_local_ipv4) ... FAIL
  test_eth_mtu (__main__.TestNetworkd.test_eth_mtu) ... FAIL
