[Touch-packages] [Bug 1757493] [NEW] Login loop using virtualbox with 3D acceleration

2018-03-21 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Since Tuesday 20-3-2018 Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 has a login loop. Before
that date everything worked fine. The login loop occurs in a Virtualbox
guest while 3D is enabled for the display.

On the same data Ubuntu 18.04 refused to show the login screen, but I
will file a seperate bug report for it. In its last display it said it
started the Display Manager, but no login screen was displayed. Maybe
the bugs are related.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1748729] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2018-02-11 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

I run Ubuntu 18.04 in Virtualbox 5.2.6 with as host OS; Ubuntu 17.10 with the
propriety Nvidia driver 340 as suggested by Ubuntu.
The screen almost freezes completely as soon as I maximise any window in the
guest OS Ubuntu 18.04. Any mouse click takes 10-60 seconds before the system
reacts to it. It took a long time to generate this bug-report.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-11 Thread BertN45
I see the bug report talks about software rendering, but I do use 3D
acceleration and the problem only occurs when I select 3D acceleration.
With 3D acceleration disabled everything work fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-12 Thread BertN45
For me the problem is kind of important, since I moved all my work to
specialised Virtual Machines;
a. one for the normal office and web browsing work,
b. one for banking and other financial apps,
c. one to try out new and unknown apps,
d. one to try out Ubuntu 18.04.

The work around I use now, is:
a. Peppermint 8 with 3D acceleration;
b. For banking I can live with software rendering and Ubuntu 17.10;
c. Xubuntu 17.10 with 3D acceleration.

I would politely propose to increase the priority of the bug, since I
expect, it will be relatively simple to solve. Besides a desktop that
freezes, if you maximise a window, looks a little bit like the past of
e.g. Ubuntu 6.06 :)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-12 Thread BertN45
1. The host is using 5.2.6. I kept the guests at 5.2.4, because 5.2.6
did freeze during login or did enter a login loop dependent on the
distro. I filed a bug report with Oracle and many persons had the same
issue during login. The beta version 5.2.7 did solve the 5.2.6 login
issues.

Today I also tried the 'beta' version of 5.2.7 with Ubuntu 18.04 with
respect to maximising the window, but without success.

2. I did keep Guest additions 5.2.4 installed for all distros, but I do
not remember how 5.2.2 behaved. Probably I was still using Ubuntu 16.04
for both host and guest during that time.

3. I only have the window maximising problem with Ubuntu Gnome 17.10 and
18.04, but NOT with Ubuntu Mate 17.10; Xubuntu 17.10; Peppermint 8 nor
with Linux Mint 18.3.

4; That package had not been installed, but after installing that
package and 1 or 2 dependencies, the system hung during reboot directly
after starting the Gnome Display Manager. It looks like the bug of point
1 had been re-introduced, but now for both 3D enabled and 3D disabled. I
will try to remove the package again through ctrl+alt+F2 or restore a
back-up.

Title:
  Xorg freeze

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I run Ubuntu 18.04 in Virtualbox 5.2.6 with as host OS; Ubuntu 17.10 with the
propriety Nvidia driver 340 as suggested by Ubuntu.
The screen almost freezes completely as soon as I maximise any window in the
guest OS Ubuntu 18.04. Any mouse click takes 10-60 seconds before the system
reacts to it. It took a long time to generate this bug-report.

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 17.10, while Guest OSes Ubuntu Mate
  17.10, Xubuntu 17.10, and Peppermint 8. Windows 7 and 10 work without
  any problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-12 Thread BertN45
1)
One month ago I upgraded Virtualbox from 5.2.4 to 5.2.6. While I was upgrading
Vbox Guest Additions in my VMs to 5.2.6, I detected that that 5.2.6 Guest
additions introduced a serious boot/login problem for all my VMs. So as a
work-around I kept all my VMs at Guest Additions 5.2.4. I reported that problem
to Oracle here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17463
In that long discussion between various persons about the problem, other
work-arounds had been proposed too. I detected yesterday that other people used
"beta" 5.2.7 to solve the problem.

2)
We are dealing with 2 separate problems:
- one is the boot/login problem of the Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.6, reported to
Oracle one month ago. That problem occurs in all my VMs and all my distros. My
work-around was stick to Guest Additions 5.2.4.
- the other is the window maximising problem with Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.4
reported to you only occurring in Ubuntu Gnome 17.10 and 18.04. Work-arounds
are stop using 3D acceleration, if you do not need the performance improvement
of that 3D acceleration. If you need the performance improvement of that 3D
acceleration use any other distro, since the problem only occurs in Ubuntu
Gnome.

3)
I detected today that Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.7 was available. So I thought
maybe I get lucky and it also solves the window maximising problem, so I tried
it. It did not solve that problem. All the time my Host remained at Vbox 5.2.6.

4)
I removed virtualbox-guest-x11. I did not realise, that it was the Ubuntu
version of Vbox Guest Additions. I always install Vbox Guest Additions through
its ISO file, since it then also nicely removes the currently installed
version. In general Ubuntu is a full release behind with respect to Virtualbox.
Ubuntu's current Vbox release for Ubuntu 17.10 is 5.1.30, while Ubuntu 18.04
uses Vbox 5.2.6. I tried your advice at Ubuntu 18.04. That installed Vbox Guest
Additions 5.2.6, so it is completely understandable, that the login problem
reported to Oracle a month ago reappeared.

As Ubuntu you have learned I think four things from this confusion:
- Avoid Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.6 in Ubuntu 18.04. Stick to Vbox 5.2.4 or push
Oracle for 5.2.8.
- I would talk to Oracle about the quality of their regression testing in the
light of your new philosophy with respect to more integration of the Vbox Guest
Additions as reported by e.g. OMG Ubuntu.
- Maybe you should only update the host versions in your repository and leave
the update of the Guest to the current Oracle mechanisms. They store the
correct guest ISO file somewhere in the Linux file system of the host and make
it available to the guest through the Host devices menu "Insert Guest Additions
CD image". They warn you about outdated guests through notification, but leave
the upgrade decision to you. I love that mechanism.
- You still have a separate "windows maximising" problem in Ubuntu Gnome.

I will download the 5.1.30 Guest Additions ISO file and try that one in
Ubuntu 17.10.

2018-02-13 Thread BertN45
1) Agreed, I will file another bug report.

2) I did already provide that information to you in the original bug-
report using Vbox Guest Additions (VGA) 5.2.4. It did take a lot of time
to produce it, because the system took 10-60 seconds to react to any
mouse click.

Remember the problem occurs only in Ubuntu Gnome, both in 17.10 and
18.04. I tried 17.10 with VGA 5.1.30, 5.2.4 and 5.2.7. I tried 18.04
with VGA 5.2.4 and 5.2.7.

I can't use 5.2.6 for testing, see the next statement on the Download page of
the Virtualbox website:
--
Important: The Guest Additions which come with VirtualBox 5.2.6 and 5.1.32 do
not work properly on Linux guests with 3D enabled. Here are updated versions
for 5.2.6 and 5.1.32.
--
That updated version is VGA 5.2.7.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1751191] [NEW] Using Vbox with 3D enabled, creates strange stuttering

2018-02-22 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

It looks that the sequence of frames displayed at the screen is mixed up. The
display goes back say ¼ a second and that gives a very strange effect. You type
a letter, that letter is erased afterwards and reappears after ¼ of a second.
See the ATTACHED video. You see the same type of going back a number of frames
in e.g. YouTube videos, which gives a jittery effect.
The problem only occurs if I have 3D acceleration enabled in Virtualbox and it
occurred with both Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10 hosts. It only occurs at Ubuntu 16.04
guests, the problem does not occur in Ubuntu 17.10 nor in other Linux distros
including Ubuntu Mate and Xubuntu. I use Virtualbox 5.2.6 with Guest Additions
5.2.7 as recommended by Oracle on their website.

Title:
Using Vbox with 3D enabled, creates strange stuttering

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
It looks that the sequence of frames displayed at the screen is mixed
up. The display goes back say ¼ a second and that gives a very strange
effect. You type a letter, that letter is erased afterwards and
reappears after ¼ of a second. See the ATTACHED video. You see the
same type of going back a number of frames in e.g. YouTube videos,
  which gives a jittery effect.

See also the Conky graphs going sometimes backward in both videos :)

The problem only occurs if I have 3D acceleration enabled in
Virtualbox and it occurred with both Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10 hosts. It
only occurs at Ubuntu 16.04 guests, the problem does not occur in
Ubuntu 17.10 nor in other Linux distros including Ubuntu Mate and
Xubuntu. I use Virtualbox 5.2.6 with Guest Additions 5.2.7 as
recommended by Oracle on their website.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1886330] [NEW] pulseaudio not working in Virtualbox

2020-07-05 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

I run my "work" VMs and in Xubuntu pulse audio often does not start. In
this dump I tried to start music through Firefox and through my media
player quodlibet and none of the audio starts.

See attachment with the pulseaudio volume control and quodlibet stuck on
time 0:00 like Firefox.

I do not have the problem with plain Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate nor with Ubuntu
Studio.

The problem is annoying, because I use Xubuntu for office and
communication like Email and the WhatsApp/Firefox/ICE combination and
with this bug WhatsApp is useless.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1886330] Re: pulseaudio not working in Virtualbox

2020-07-06 Thread BertN45
Pulseaudio was running, but the music did not start. It stayed in the
initial position. I have the impression that Firefox creates the
problem. The music in quodlibet played. I stopped it and I started
Firefox to play a music video from youtube, it did not play. Afterwards
quodlibet stopped playing music also.

Remember I only have the problem with Xubuntu and with none of the other
Ubuntu flavors.

I attached the journal.txt file.

media player quodlibet and none of the audio starts.

See attachment with the pulseaudio volume control and quodlibet stuck
  on time 0:00 like Firefox.

I do not have the problem with plain Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate nor with
  Ubuntu Studio.

Note that I run Firefox twice in two different windows. One window is
for the WhatsApp website, the other windows is for youtube. This is the
ONLY system, where I use two windows of Firefox both potentially using
pulseaudio. The WhatsApp windows has used or tried to use pulseaudio in
the past.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1940726] [NEW] Network-Manager.services are all masked after last update

2021-08-20 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

After the update from Thursday 19-8 to Friday 20-8 the network stopped working.
I restored the system to the state of a week ago and retried the update using:
- the update manager
- apt dist-upgrade
The network does not work, because all 3 network-manager.services are masked
and thus is it impossible to start them even by hand.
During the install process I saw an error message about a missing file related
to inetd.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1940726] Re: Network-Manager.services are all masked after last update

2021-08-20 Thread BertN45
The third try did succeed using the update manager, that went to a partial
update like the first time, but this time it worked.
The difference between both times was, that in the update from Wednesday to
Thursday, the update of ppp did not happen, it was in the list of updates, but
not selected to be updated (v).
The next update from Thursday to Friday caused the network to fail afterwards.

The problem seems related to some sequence issue in the updates.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1947185] [NEW] Wayland does not initially display conky output

2021-10-14 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Starting Ubuntu with wayland does not initially display the .conkyrc
file. Only after a change in that file, conky restarts the display and
.conkyrc is displayed. Conky has been started according to the system
monitor. I doubled the time before starting conky, but that did not
help.

If I change the display to xorg, .conkyrc displays directly as expected.

Title:
Wayland does not initially display conky output

Status in wayland package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Starting Ubuntu with wayland does not initially display the .conkyrc
file. Only after a change in that file, conky restarts the display and
.conkyrc is displayed. Conky has been started according to the system
monitor. I doubled the time before starting conky, but that did not
  help.

If I change the display to xorg, .conkyrc displays directly as
  expected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1947187] [NEW] Running in xorg unreadable firefox password request

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988488] Re: Screen freeze at the moment of login

2022-09-15 Thread BertN45
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1988473 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1988473

I never used the package 6.1.38-dfsg-3~ubuntu1.20.04.1 or the 6.1.34.and
6.1.36 version of it.

I always load the virtualbox package directly from virtualbox.org, so I
used virtualbox-6.1_6.1.34-150636.1~Ubuntu~eoan_amd64;
virtualbox-6.1_6.1.36-152435~Ubuntu~jammy_amd64 and
virtualbox-6.1_6.1.38-153438~Ubuntu~jammy_amd64

I never had any problem with these Oracle vbox packages not in Ubuntu
22.04; Xubuntu 22.04; Ubuntu Studio 20.04; Ubuntu 16.04 ESM nor in one
of the other favors and remixes of 22.04 and 20.04.

The problem does not show up as a crash, but the screen always freezes
just before the login screen should appear. It only freezes in Ubuntu
22.10 and not in Ubuntu Mate 22.10

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988488] Re: Screen freeze before the login screen on VirtualBox (if the third party software option was selected)

2022-10-04 Thread BertN45
I moved all my applications to virtual machines, I use 6 VMs for that
purpose. One VM is dealing with all multimedia apps and I need all
codecs there. That is, why the Host OS is a minimal install of Ubuntu
22.04 LTS, so without any Apps except Firefox.

I can live with my Xorg workaround for 2 reasons:
- Normally I prefer LTS releases and I used the other releases only a few times
in the last 10 years for better drivers or new ZFS functionality;
- I can use Xorg instead of Wayland, since I don't really need 22.10 and for
now I installed it mainly out of curiosity and trying to ensure my use case is
still OK;

Note, that all YouTubers promote to install that third-party software.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988488] [NEW] Screen freeze at the moment of login

2022-09-01 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

The problem started to appear 2 weeks ago after one of my daily updates.
It also happens after I re-install the system from a freshly downloaded
ISO file. The system freezes at the moment, it starts the gnome display
manager.

I file the bug-report after a partial upgrade just before I will reboot
the system. If needed I can reboot in recovery mode, since the gnome
display manager is not started in that case.

I tried the continue button without effect and also "apt upgrade" and
"apt dist-upgrade" do have the same effect

I run the VM from the Host-OpenZFS file system, so I can restore to
before the update. Recently I use a Virtualbox snapshot to restore the
system to before the update/upgrade.

If you need log files, let me know.

Title:
Screen freeze at the moment of login

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The problem started to appear 2 weeks ago after one of my daily
updates. It also happens after I re-install the system from a freshly
downloaded ISO file. The system freezes at the moment, it starts the
  gnome display manager.

I file the bug-report after a partial upgrade just before I will
reboot the system. If needed I can reboot in recovery mode, since the
gnome display manager is not started in that case.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1861609 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861609

I try it again, this error has nothing to do with bug #1861609. In 2020
I was running Xubuntu 20.04 and Virtualbox 6.1. This error only occurs
in Xubuntu 23.10 and it does not occur in the development edition of
Xubuntu 24.04.

I will add journalctl -b as attachment and indeed it is related to
vboxguest.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1821960] [NEW] [wma codec problem, playback] Playback problem

2019-03-27 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

The song Waterloo of ABBA plays correct with
Windows Media Audio 9.1, VBR Quality 50, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR, but it
stutters badly with
Windows Media Audio 9.2, VBR Quality 50, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR
I use Quod Libet as audio payer.
The song plays for one second, halts for one second and than plays again for a
second.
I have the same problem with all my thousands of other songs with the Windows
Media Audio 9.2 format.

Title:
[wma codec problem, playback] Playback problem

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The song Waterloo of ABBA plays correct with
Windows Media Audio 9.1, VBR Quality 50, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR, but it
stutters badly with
Windows Media Audio 9.2, VBR Quality 50, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR
I use Quod Libet as audio payer.
The song plays for one second, halts for one second and than plays again for
a second.
I have the same problem with all my thousands of other songs with the Windows
Media Audio 9.2 format.
