  Read my usb sound device initially.
  Stopped when I tried to play sound through chrome (was fine with firefox).
  Can't get it to read my sound device now...

automatically retry in 5 seconds." This message is from a pulseaudio generated 
window.

  Cannot run start-pulseaudio-x11; I get this message "Connection failure: 
Connection refused

Update: booting in recovery mode solves the problem, but rebooting
normally causes the problem to happen again.

  Can't get it to read my sound device now...
  Can't run pavucontrol... get this message: "Connection to pulseaudio failed. 
automatically retry in 5 seconds." This message is from a pulseaudio generated 
window.

  Cannot run start-pulseaudio-x11; I get this message "Connection failure: 
Connection refused
  pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused" This message shows in the 
terminal.
