[Touch-packages] [Bug 1888992] Re: [Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Not detecting/switching to front jack after plugging in headphones
Thank you for following up. I have managed to complete a commit bisect of the Ubuntu kernels and can confirm that the first bad commit is 851cc40f47677174527a1decbd1074feacd15a93: ALSA: hda: call runtime_allow() for all hda controllers BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1876765 [ Upstream commit 9a6418487b566503c772cb6e7d3d44e652b019b0 ] Regarding #15: I have tested and can confirm that "options snd_hda_intel power_save_controller=0" is also a valid workaround. Regarding #16: I have reverted the workarounds, booted the test kernel and can confirm that this also fixes my detection problem. ** Attachment added: "git bisect output" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1888992/+attachment/5397069/+files/commit_bisect_first_bad.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1888992 Title: [Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Not detecting/switching to front jack after plugging in headphones Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I boot my system without any sound devices plugged into any jacks; checking Gnome settings Sound, Output Device is "Dummy Output" (no other options available in drop-down list). I plug in headphones into the front jack and play some audio, but do not hear any sound from the headphones; checking Gnome settings Sound, the Output Device is still "Dummy Output", with no other options available. This is a regression from previous behaviour, when plugging in headphones into the front jack would automatically enable/switch to the front jack and its associated controller "Family 17h (Models 00h- 0fh) HD Audio Controller" (this is the motherboard's onboard audio hardware). To add to #9, as well as the headphones being detected after running alsa-info, I can confirm that they still work as expected after detection. As this may be a bug introduced by a kernel change, the current kernel running is 5.4.0.42.45 (generic, x86_64), whereas the previous one I was running when I didn't see this bug was 5.4.0.40.43. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1888992 Title: [Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Not detecting/switching to front jack after plugging in headphones Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I boot my system without any sound devices plugged into any jacks; checking Gnome settings Sound, Output Device is "Dummy Output" (no other options available in drop-down list). [Touch-packages] [Bug 1888992] [NEW] [Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Not detecting/switching to front jack after plugging in headphones
Public bug reported: I boot my system without any sound devices plugged into any jacks; checking Gnome settings Sound, Output Device is "Dummy Output" (no other options available in drop-down list). I plug in headphones into the front jack and play some audio, but do not hear any sound from the headphones; checking Gnome settings Sound, the Output Device is still "Dummy Output", with no other options available. This is a regression from previous behaviour, when plugging in headphones into the front jack would automatically enable/switch to the front jack and its associated controller "Family 17h (Models 00h-0fh) HD Audio Controller" (this is the motherboard's onboard audio hardware). [Touch-packages] [Bug 1539967] Re: Audio skips (buffer underruns) intermittently but particularly when screen blanks
I found that disabling AMD C1E support in BIOS mitigates this issue (and also another problem I had with boot stalling without mouse/keyboard input) - this bug may be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1012806. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1533783] Re: pulseaudio crashes starting audio playback while another audio source is running
OK - I'll chalk this one up to the timer issue I mentioned. Taking out "nolapic_timer" from grub options has allowed pulseaudio to detect and use high precision timers and it has performed much better (lower CPU usage, concurrent streams OK) - I still get the occasional audio glitch, but I'll deal with that separately. My boot stalls seem to be caused by some process waiting for keyboard or mouse input for generating entropy; not sure why nolapic_timer fixed that, but I'll have to live without it in favour of a functioning pulseaudio. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1533783 Title: pulseaudio crashes starting audio playback while another audio source is running Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: While playing a youtube video, starting up another audio playback (in this case, in Rhythmbox) causes the video player to crash. I expected the video (with its audio track) to continue playback without crashing, while Rhythmbox gets mixed in as a second, concurrent audio source. Instead what happens is that I start playing a track in Rhythmbox, that first track fails with an error "Failed to open output device: pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated", at this point the youtube video crashes and then the next track in Rhythmbox begins to play without pulseaudio. Running pulseaudio -, I can see that alsa-sink.c is for some reason processing lots of rewinds shortly before there is an implicit underrun reported, then pulseaudio dies. Ubuntu release: 15.10 wily Pulseaudio package version: 1:6.0-0ubuntu13 I had no problems with audio on my previous install on this hardware (14.04 LTS, clean install). Ever since I did a clean install of 15.10 on the same hardware I've had problems with audio and pulseaudio. My audio setup is analogue 5.1 output on ALC889A (Gigabyte GA-MA790GP- DS4H onboard HDA) using snd_intel_hda; there is also HDMI audio output hardware detected but which I'm not using. I've had to install pavucontrol to select my analogue output as it doesn't show up in the standard sound settings (only the digital output). I had modified /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to adjust default-fragments and default-fragment-size-msec to fix glitchy audio in a game, and then modified them back to default values when that stopped music players from working - I was constantly getting the same pa_stream_writable_size error as above. Adding then removing "options snd-hda-intel model=intel-alc889a" from /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf has made no difference. There could be a timer problem - when booting up, the boot process stalls unless I press a key, move the mouse or add "nolapic_timer" to grub boot options (which I'm running with at the moment); the pulseaudio log refers to a lack of high resolution timers and disabling timer-based scheduling. I'm going to try taking that out and see whether that makes a difference. Running pulseaudio -, I can see that alsa-sink.c is for some reason processing lots of rewinds shortly before th
