No mechanism for displaying internal downloads in transfer indicator

Status in ubuntu-download-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
We're currently adding support to the webbrowser-app to allow it
download files internally in addition to sending them to other
applications, currently download manager has a metadata property
titled showInIndicator, however this doesn't appear to have any
effect when the transfer is happening inside an application without
  content-hub involvement.

This results in an inconsistent experience for the user, as some
downloads from the browser show up in the indicator (those opened
immediately with other apps) and some don't (those downloaded for
  later use).

Status in ubuntu-download-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
webbrowser-app (in main) currently has a non-explicit runtime dependency on
ubuntu-download-manager, which is in universe.
This has been working until now because the desktop version of the app
doesn’t make use of the QML API for the download manager, only the version for
touch devices does (and ubuntu-download-manager is part of the touch seed).
With convergence in mind, the desktop version needs to start using that QML
API, so the runtime dependency needs to be made explicit. Hence the need for
ubuntu-download-manager to be included in main.
It is likely that other applications will have the same kind of requirements
in the near future too.

ubuntu-download-manager is actively being developed and maintained,
  upstream tracks their bugs at
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-download-manager/.

All its build and runtime dependencies are already in main.

Bug description:
Currently Ubuntu Touch is using the android camera-service and that is
  the plan for 13.10.

Going forward in 14.04, the android camera-service will no longer be
used and camera access is going to move to the Ubuntu side. There was
discussion of either using HAL directly (direct access to devices) or
using a camera-service type thing in Ubuntu.

Using devices directly causes at least a few problems:
   * can't prevent more than one user from accessing the device at a time
   * enumerating camera devices for apparmor policy is extra maintenance for
porters
   * can't provide a contextual runtime prompt for access (like we (will) do
with online accounts, location, microphone). This is particularly important for
application confinement.

Instead of direct hardware access, an out of process helper (in
relation to the app) can be used to address all of these problems,
similar to what pulseaudio does for audio. This service can ensure
only one user can access the device at a time and since the service
accesses the the device files on the app's behalf, we don't need to
enumerate devices in /dev in policy. Furthermore, when an app accesses
the service (ideally over DBus), the service can contact trust-store,
the trust-store will prompt the user (Foo wants to access the camera.
Is this ok? Yes|No), then optionally cache the result and return the
result to the service. In this manner the user is given a contextual
prompt at the time of access by the app. By using caching this
decision can be remembered the next time. If caching is used, there
should be a method to change the decision in system settings.

If direct hardware access is needed for performance reasons, it is
possible to use fd delegation in AppArmor and have the service open
the device and pass the fd to the app without having to enumerate the
/dev devices. Please talk to jjohansen if pursuing this option.

Lastly, bug #1230391 discusses providing a visual cue during
background recording for audio. We will need to do the same for video
recording. Feel free to add a task to bug #1230391 if there is work to
integrate this new service with that visual cuing.

This should be implemented in time for shippable devices to address
  the application confinement concern.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AccountPrivileges#permission-prompt: On the
phone, if an app tries to access your ... camera ... or video
recording, this should be subject to permission...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1394203] Re: Installing System Update not working when locking the screen

2015-05-26 Thread Manuel de la Peña
AS barry mentioned, with no logs we hav eno info, there is one thing
that could happen. If the download manager is working and does not
stop and the system image daemon is killed paused or something of the
kind we might be getting in an unexpected state in the state machine
where the system image daemon is waiting for the signals from udm yet
udm already finished.

I'll do some testing on my side about this.

This exceptions were not reported until we added the check in the

One of my system-image test suites creates a destination directory
that is unwritable. Previously, when UDM tried to download a file to
this while unconstrained, it would issue an error with Permission
denied in the error output. Now however, udm appears to either crash
or freeze. It becomes unresponsive to D-Bus and the error signal is
never received, thus failing the test.

Further, since it usually freezes, this affects future tests because
udm will not exit when its D-Bus exit method is called. Eventually it
gets signal killed and then the tests can proceed.

For now, I will have to skip these tests when s-i runs under udm. The
same tests pass for the curl-based downloader.

Bug description:
Hello, I just completed a quick review of the click source and the
unity-scope-click source and behaviours, and found some opportunities
  for improvement.

Debian, and Ubuntu, rely upon signed repository files with
cryptographic hashes of packages to provide both integrity and
authenticity checks for the packages hosted on that repository.

The click framework and the unity-scope-click discovery and
installation tool do not use signed repository files, nor do they have
signatures of any sort on downloaded packages. The only integrity and
authenticity checks are provided by the use of HTTPS. The click
verify command will check files within the archive against MD5sums
stored inside the archive but the click verify command is not used
during package installation. (This is suitable for validating
  integrity against accidental changes only.)

While it appears that unity-scope-click properly uses HTTPS to
download package metadata and packages, HTTPS alone is insufficient
  for our needs:

  - Someone in a position to create new certificates at any of several
hundred certificate authorities could create certificates purporting
to be our update servers. This actual problem has been discovered in
the wild with several certificate authorities issuing wild-card
certificates or even certificates with signing authority.

  - X.509 is extremely complicated; TLS is extremely complicated. Flaws
  in both are inevitable.

  - HTTPS prevents the use of caching.

  - HTTPS only 'works' for data-in-motion; it is useless for data-at-
  rest integrity and authenticity checks.

I have not yet reviewed the tools that application authors will use to
upload their packages to our distribution servers but note in passing
that most of these issues are also issues for adding packages to our
update servers -- packages in flight within our network can be
corrupted for many reasons, packages on disk can be corrupted for many
reasons. A signature mechanism can protect against internal network
faults, storage faults, and provide assurance months or years later
that an uploaded package was uploaded by someone in control of a
  corresponding private key.

  Thanks

Bug description:
The package names of QML modules should be of the format qml-
module-{$modulename}[version], a transition that was started during Qt
5.3 preparation in Ubuntu. For example this could be qml-module-
qtquick-localstorage or qml-module-qtsysteminfo for non versioned
  modules, and qml-module-ubuntu-webthing0.3 for versioned/co-
  installable modules.

  Further details in Debian e-mail:
  http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-kde-
  talk/2014-March/001889.html

For Ubuntu, transitional packages should be put in place for smooth
distribution upgrades, since we're shipping with the old names in previous
Ubuntus. An example of that is at
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-packagers/kubuntu-packaging/qtsystems-opensource-src/revision/31
 - in other words:
  - Make the old package a transitional oldlibs package that depends on the new
package
  - Add Breaks/Replaces to the new package for the old non-transitional
packages (be careful about the version number specification)
  - Keep Multi-Arch: same and Architecture: any for the transitional package
  - Write QML module instead of QML plugin
  - Rename also the *.install files

  ---
  One more example on naming:

For example, the test (qtdeclarative5-test-plugin) in the old
qtdeclarative5-style package naming became qttest (qml-module-
qttest) in the new naming since the path is actually under
  /usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/QtTest/

  qml-module-qtquick-xmllistmodel has path
/usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/QtQuick/XmlListModel, as an example if you have
more than one subdir. /usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/Ubuntu/Connectivity/ would be
  qml-module-ubuntu-connectivity.

Bug description:
Since version 0.23+14.10.20141015.1-0ubuntu1 which included a fix for
bug #1365993, it is impossible to download files from the browser in
the utopic images (RTM images are not affected).

This is due to the version discrepancy of qtdeclarative5-ubuntu-
  download-manager0.1.

  On utopic:

  $ apt-cache policy qtdeclarative5-ubuntu-download-manager0.1
  qtdeclarative5-ubuntu-download-manager0.1:

  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I’m reporting the bug against webbrowser-app, as it’s what appears not
to work, but the fix really is to backport a more recent
  qtdeclarative5-ubuntu-download-manager0.1 to utopic/vivid.

Note: this code path affects devices only, not the desktop. So fixing
it in vivid is sufficient, as utopic images won’t be supported as soon
  as vivid images are out.

  Thanks

Status in “ubuntu-download-manager” package in Ubuntu RTM:

Bug description:
I'm working on making the s-i tests more robust and I've run into an
odd situation, where udm sometimes stores its downloaded files using
an incorrect path, and not the one that s-i (which is unconstrained)
requests. This only appears to happen when the full s-i test suite is
run. When run in isolation, the test succeeds.

Here's a log of the createDownloadGroup call I'm making:

  createDownloadGroup:
  [Record(url='https://localhost:8943/gpg/blacklist.tar.xz',
  destination='/tmp/tmpe7mo8qm9/ubuntu/cache/keyring.tar.xz',
  checksum=''),
  Record(url='https://localhost:8943/gpg/blacklist.tar.xz.asc',
  destination='/tmp/tmpe7mo8qm9/ubuntu/cache/keyring.tar.xz.asc',
  checksum='')]

url is the source url, destination is the local path to save the file
in. This call produces incorrect destination paths in the 'finished'
  signal:

  FINISHED: dbus.Array([dbus.String('/home/barry/.local/share/ubuntu-
  download-manager//usr/lib/telepathy/mission-
  control-5/Downloads/blacklist (20).tar.xz'),
  dbus.String('/home/barry/.local/share/ubuntu-download-
  manager//usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5/Downloads/blacklist
  (20).tar.xz.asc')], signature=dbus.Signature('s'))

Notice the very strange directory udm chooses which is definitely not
the path requested, and in fact doesn't exist. This matches the
observed behavior that after a succesful group download completion
(i.e. no errors occur), I assert that the requested destination path
exists, and in the failing test it does not.

I suspect some state is not getting reset in udm.

The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem
regarding indicator-network. This problem was most recently seen with
version 0.5.1+14.10.20141015-0ubuntu1, the problem page at
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/ecc14b5d54f3e0a0f1720cad0c623f81c8a16988
  contains more details.

steps to reproduce: (need to trigger race condition)
  1. pull down network indicator
  2. toggle flight mode on and off quickly a few times
  3. click sim card 1 and 2
  4. toggle flight mode
  5. swipe up close indicators
  6. repeat steps 1-5 until crash occurs

  expected results:
  no crash happens

  actual results:
Bluetooth indicator blinks (appear and disappear) in indicator bar at top of
screen, and network indicator crashes.

  additional info:
eventually the bluetooth indicator appears stable in the indicators at the
top of the screen.

The/A way to reproduce it is to start the location service and turn on and off
the aerplane mode (with a sim that needs to be unlocked).
