Bug description:
A similar, if not the same bug, has been reported to be fixed for
OTA6. This bug report explains that it's no necessary to wait for a
minute or so on the phone call, but the screen turns black
immediately, and doesn't turn back on again to allow hanging up via a
  screen control.

  Potential duplicate: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-
  system-image/+bug/1483127

Device: Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition
  OS version: 15.04 (r5)

  A) Incoming phone call:
     - Accept the incoming call by sliding the grey middle button to the
green button
     - Watch the screen turning black
     - Bring the phone to your ear, speak (as in a normal phone call)
     - Take the phone away from your ear, note that the screen stays black

How to hang up anyway: (workaround)
     - (continued from above, screen stays black after taking it away from
your ear)
     - Press the screen lock/unlock button (= button above volume control)
     - Screen with phone app shows for about half a second, then turns
black again
     - Press the screen lock/unlock button again, and try to press the red
hangup button quickly
     - Repeat the previous step until hanging up succeeds

  B) Outbound phone call:
     - Open the phone app
     - Slide up Recent calls list from bottom edge, select a phone number
     - Press green dial button to initiate the call
     - Watch the phone dialling and the screen turning black
     - Bring the phone to your ear, speak (as in a normal phone call)
     - Take the phone away from your ear, note that the screen stays black

How to hang up anyway: (workaround)
     - (same procedure as in A. above)
     - Difference in behavior:
   * In some calls after pressing the lock/unlock button for the first
time the screen stays alight (doesn't turn black again after half a second).

Jean-Baptiste Lallement confirms on the ubuntu-phone mailing list:
In both cases, covering/uncovering the proximity sensor should turn the
screen on, if the screen has not been turned off with the power button. (This
is not happening.)

Dan, if you in Dekko in reply mode the right part of Dekko is a window
with some big bar of the form

--
v New message /

when you are in non-desktop mode, one can scroll the text completely up,
it hides behibd the above bar; when you are in desktop mode, even in full
screen,
it is impossible to move the text above enough to see the cursor; please make
your own impression of the difference; i.e. this must be some special probleme
within Dekko;

IMHO, the OSK in desktop mode must be
- configurable by the user in its size
- must be moveable on the screen like the apps to be placed in some free

Status in ubuntu-keyboard package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When using the BQ M10 tablet in landscape mode, the virtual keyboard
stretches from one side of the screen to the other; this makes it quite
uncomfortable to use because of the distance one's finger needs to travel
(especially when using one single finger to type).
Also the height of the keys could be reduced (just leave them as they are on
the phone) as they look quite huge compared to the rest of the UI and take up a
lot of real estate on screen.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1573990] Re: Numerical keyboard wish

  Numerical keyboard wish

Status in ubuntu-keyboard package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I wonder if anyone will support my idea of creating a numerical
keyboard option as we used to have in standard phones. What for?

  1. Did You know there are blind people who are able to write a message? Did
You ever wrote a SMS message while driving a car/running or walking/ under the
table on a meeting/at school without looking on the screen? Yes, it was
possible. Now as we have smartphones we are forced to look on the screen to tap
the right "button".
Now if we had the proper cover for our phones, a simple 10 stickers or a
prepaired foil for the screen, we would still be able to write only by
touching, without having to look. But there is no proper keyboard layout.

  2. I have a Nexus 5 device with Android. While turning on the phone
with inserted SIMcard, we have to provide PIN number. Do You know Your
PIN number? I didn't. Ubuntu phone forced me to remind it to myself.
Why? Android displays the 0-9 numerical keyboard with the alphabet
under the numbers, so that I do not have to know that for one of my
phones the PIN is 6529 one for another 9274. If I have letters on my
keyboard I can keep in mind 4-letter words, not numbers. I'm not an
Android developer but I think there is a reason why they display the
  numerical PIN-keyboard this way.

2016-04-11 Thread Matthias Apitz
I don't know if this is related (or another bug): I can reproduce 100%
on OTA-10 with the app SensorStatus, that the app opens successful the
GPS service, issues some ioctls and without getting or waiting for a
first fix, it just closes again the GPS, all this within 2 secs:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1554366] [NEW] BQ E4.5: QWERTZ keyboard per bluetooth

2016-03-07 Thread Matthias Apitz
Public bug reported:

I think I have now found exactly what I was locking for as BT keyboard with
mouse "on board":

http://www.amazon.de/dp/B0142BCTT2?psc=1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/BATTOP-Ultra-Thin-Bluetooth-Wireless-Keyboard/dp/B0142BCTT2

This has a German QWERTZ layout and it pairs fine with the E4.5
The only problem I have is, it is German QWERTZ layout and I do
not know how to change this in the Ubuntu BQ E4.5. Normaly in Ubuntu
desktop you can change this, or in FreeBSD, in KDE, etc. How this must
be done in the BQ E4.5, maybe with some command from phablets shell.

I tried, for example

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

but this complains about the root FS being read-only.

I'd even say that the question "Wifi is off, should it be turned on?' is
more than superfluous. Isn't it logical that it must be turned on if
someone switches hotspot on? This should be done on the fly without

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1495207] Re: BQ E4.5 (r24): after fine update to r25 system is reported as r-1 and as "never" updated

2015-09-21 Thread Matthias Apitz
to Barry:

I do not know what "si 2.5" or "si 3.0" is; I only can see what I have
posted in the original report: version: Ubuntu 15.04-armhf
(20150825-170536), can you please explain here (or off-list) what those
"si values" are?

as I said, on the update to r25 on September 13, mine was working fine
and my wife's failed; in my BQ a lot of things are installed below
~phablet, even a chroot complete system to compile things; the one of my
wife is nearly unchanged (if I do not count contacts etc.); the only
"unusual" with my wife's phone is that it was for "repair" in June here
in Germany in the company Mundo Reader GmbH and I don't know what they
did exactly as "repair"; it returned with a new MAC addr, that's why I
think, they just returned another device which I then updated to r24; do
you want me to contact Mundo Reader?

What do you mean with "dangling symlink"? I could not see any error in
the fetched delta files nor in https://system-image.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-
touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en/krillin/version-25.tar.xz

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1495207] Re: BQ E4.5 (r24): after fine update to r25 system is reported as r-1 and as "never" updated

2015-09-16 Thread Matthias Apitz
I have pulled the tar files for the device and channel and the file
channel.ini is fine in the archive version-25.tar.xz;

more:
the file has in all three locations:
- my BQ r25
- the version-25.tar.xz
- the damaged file in my wife's BQ
the same last modification time 2 sep 11:33

it's absolutely unclear while it was of zero bytes in my wife's BQ; how
the file is moved from the tar file in place during installation? it can
not be a simple un-tar because the file in the tar archive is
'system/etc/system-image/channel.ini'

2015-09-16 Thread Matthias Apitz
please ignore the question 3; I learned how to use the ubuntu-device-
flash tool and instelled it in my chrooted system in the BQ;

Status in system-image package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After the vacation I have updated today (September 13, 2015) my BQ
4.5 and the one of my wife to r25. Both updates went without any
problem and mine does not show any issue. The one of my wife shows in
  About the device window:

OS number: -1 (and not r25)
  last updated: never
  version: Ubuntu 15.04-armhf (20150825-170536)

What went wrong and what can I do? I'm afraid that the next update will
fail completely now because it can not see the current version.

Apart of this the device is working.

2015-09-16 Thread Matthias Apitz
I have checked the delta-files as well and I see no reason how the target file
/etc/system-image/channel.ini could end up with length zero in my wife's BQ
E4.5 after the update from r24 to r25 on September 13.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1495207] Re: BQ E4.5 (r24): after fine update to r25 system is reported as r-1 and as "never" updated

2015-09-15 Thread Matthias Apitz
some remarks to Barry's last comment:

1) keep in mind that the device was nearly fully functional after the
update, I only saw the problem because I went to the 'about' screen and
because of the scopes; it could be the fact that more users are hit by
the problem;

2) the channel.ini file is in a read-only file system; I have had to
remount the root to correct it; i.e. it is nearly impossible that a
normal user could damage that file;

3) I wanted today morning to check the image, but I only see small files
in this place: http://system-image.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-
aquaris.en/krillin/ where is the full image?

thanks for all the support to get my wife's BQ working again!

2015-09-15 Thread Matthias Apitz
I copied the channel.ini file and now it says:

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ system-image-cli -i
current build number: 25
device name: krillin
channel: ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en
last update: 2015-09-13 08:54:13
version version: 25
version ubuntu: 20150825.1
version device: 20150821-736d127
version custom: 20150821-887-33-32-vivid

but the

sudo system-image-cli -b 0

has no visible effect, it just returns to the shell prompt and even
after reboot the scopes are not administrable

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1484664] Re: Visual feadback when the message one is writing is going to be split into multiple ones

2015-08-14 Thread Matthias Apitz
you will never get 160 chars through; the max length is 140 byte and the
rumor of 160 has to do with the idea that you can pack 160 7-bit ASCII
chars into 140 bytes; but nowadays nobody sends ASCII, all are sending
some fency stuff; a good background article about Unicode in SMS is
here: https://www.twilio.com/engineering/2012/11/08/adventures-in-

High costs due to SMS being sent multiple times

Status in telephony-service package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When sending text messages, Ubuntu displays the loading spinner for a
very long time. In the provider's monthly reports, I can see that the
message has been sent multiple times, even though I only sent one
message to one recipient and the message was short enough not to be
  broken into separate ones.

  === Old description: ===

When having a bad network connection, Ubuntu tries to send SMS
multiple times but fails to recognize which messages have already been
sent, resulting in very high costs due to the same message actually
  being sent several times.

I found this when looking through my provider's monthly reports and I
remember being on train journeys with very bad network connections on
these days. See the attached screenshots.

  ==

This happened on a Nexus 4 running on the stable channel (with up-to-
date images at the given times).

online or short after the sending:

(btw: one should better use: /system/bin/logcat -b radio -v time

the AT chats can be monitored online from the ring buffers with:

$ sudo /system/bin/logcat -b radio

but this does not help to analyze weeks later what was going on :-(

There is only one line in the database per message. Both rows have a
messageStatus of 4 which seems to be correct.

please specify exactly:
a) how many SMS you sent/typed
b) how many the provider made of them
c) check with the receivers, how many they received
d) check the times in the MySQL database with what the provider says

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1480554] Re: High costs due to SMS being sent multiple times when having a bad network connection

2015-08-02 Thread Matthias Apitz
comparing the database timestamps and the provider times (from the
screenshots) we see:

databaseprovider
19:31:58.664 21:32:05 ... 21:32:45
11:31:17.015 13:31:21 ... 13:31:32

i.e. (ignoring the 2 hour diff due to TZ) it seems that the database
timestamp is made when the SMS is queued for delivery and not from the
last send attempt;

are there other log files (the question goes to Canonical) about the
send attempts?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1480554] Re: High costs due to SMS being sent multiple times when having a bad network connection

2015-08-01 Thread Matthias Apitz
What I do not fully understand is: AFAIK SMS is sent upstream to the
provider with AT cmds, like this example:

AT+CMGF=1
OK
AT+CMGS=+49170xx
CRThis is the text message.
+CMGS: 4711
OK

(+CMGF=1 is text mode, =1 PDU mode).

The response from the provider could be OK or ERROR. Have you looked
into the MySQL database in the phone to see what is there about the
messages. If you need how to look into, see here:
http://www.unixarea.de/bq/bq-aquaris-e45-ubuntu.txt (chap. 15).

Would be interesting to test after this if additional calls will present
the slider at all. If not, this would be exactly as in my case: my wife missed
some calls due to the noise in the public transport and after this she
could not see any other call, only heard the ringing.

2015-06-22 Thread Matthias Apitz
I can easy reproduce this bug in BQ E4.5 r23 with the following
procedure:

1. configure in battery page 1 minute to suspend
2. goto the report enable page
3. un-mark sending reports and stay in page to await suspend after 1 minute
4. restart and unlock phone; sending is enabled already or will go green in

  1) control of the audio level with + and - buttons (i.e. not with a
potentiometer in the lines;
  2) control of the micro on/off while in the call

  and if possible too

  3) hangup the call from the headset
  4) answer calls from the headset

I did tests with the heaadset provided by Apple with the iPhone6.
While the audio in general works (tested with youtube and phone calls
to an automated answering system of my bank account), the buttons +
and - buttons did not have any effect; the button labeled with a micro
  symbol, terminated the phone call.

In addition we should have a list of supported devices if BQ.com will
not offer them by their own.

  Thanks for consideration.
