We designed an icon for the dash that looks like the BFB but in the same style

I will include it in the Suru theme but I guess that it have to be included in

Transparent backgrounds should be avoided for application icons cause the
result looks very awkward once the Ubuntu shape and the shadow are applied.
Please try to design something consistent with the core app icons (our icon
guidelines can help).

  2) Using a single icon to indicate new messages vs chat status is a
  challenge.

We would like to explore an icon set which is more functional in terms
of communicating, and better adheres to the intended aesthetic.

  A couple of early ideas:
  - make use of the mono status icons that were used in the 10.04 (and 10.10?)
Me Menu.
  - Experiment with bigger emblems to create a clearer overlap.

  Factors to consider:
  - accessbility shape vs colour
  - size
  - consistency between the title icons and the standalone status icons
  - visual style and theme of Ubuntu

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1478025] Re: Speaker icons differences too small

2015-08-04 Thread Matthieu James
Actually, the problem of legibility of these icons on the BQ is rather due to
the low screen resolution and the fact we use scalable icons instead of
pixel-perfect icons specifically designed for this size.
Regarding your proposal, I have spoken with the visual design team and we are
not keen to remove to arches when the volume is low, because the speaker alone
would look very unbalanced compared to the other indicators and the spacing
between the volume and the battery indicator would be too big.
However, for more clarity, we will updated the 'volume zero' indicator to a
white speaker with a cross (instead of the actual speaker with arches in 50%
opacity).

See the attached image that's a combination of high volume, low volume
and muted. The stroke through the muted speaker is very light, almost
a one-pixel stroke on the Aquaris E4.5 phone, where the icons are
displayed at 26x26 pixels. The volume indication (the two arches on
the right of the speaker) seems unnecessary when muted, too, and just
  add confusion.

In the low-volume case the arches seem equally unnecessary, since
apart from spotting the arches you need to compare their colour to see
"how much" of the indication is active vs. not. Could we not lose the
  inactive arches altogether?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1478025] Re: Speaker icons differences too small

2015-08-05 Thread Matthieu James
Please note also that I added two new icons to the theme: volume-min and
volume-max.
They should be used along with the volume sliders (in the sound indicator menu
and the System Settings sound menu) in place of the actual icons. The
volume-max icon is similar to the audio-volume-high indicator but the
volume-min icon shows only the speaker without the arches.

Title:
  Speaker icons differences too small

Status in ubuntu-themes package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The icon theme got a nice update that made them all much lighter (as
in weight), but also resulted in some of them being less readable,
especially in a bright environment (aka. very often when you use a
  phone outside).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1450894] Re: [Indicators] Messaging indicator does not indicate that there is a new message

2015-08-06 Thread Matthieu James
Note that apart from the colour, the designs of the icons used for the two
states of the indicator (no new message / new message) are different since the
last update: outline / solid envelope.
This might help to differentiate the two states.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1365408] Re: Should ship a PNG icon instead of using the theme

2014-09-16 Thread Matthieu James
I did a merge request 3 weeks ago. It's approved for a long time but
unfortunately not merged yet: https://code.launchpad.net/~tiheum/ubuntu-
themes/suru-icons/+merge/231533

It includes too major updates for the Suru theme:

- All the scalable colourful icons (apps and weather) have been moved to
'sources' directories in the corresponding category folders. These new
directories are not mentioned in the index.theme file. This way, only
the PNGs can be found by the icon lookup process. So, if a core app uses
the icon from the theme, the PNG will be always displayed instead of the
SVG.

- The System Settings and Browser app icons have been updated. If you
want to download the latest PNG for the corresponding app, don't follow
the link in the bug description but this one:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~tiheum/ubuntu-themes/suru-icons/files/head

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1378417] Re: Icon clipping in notification-renderer

2014-10-29 Thread Matthieu James
The battery icon is clipped because it's not a square but a rectangle: the
source file canvas is 105x90 px. The icon should be downsized while maintaining
its aspect ratio.
I am not sure if at the moment, the SDK allows to display an image which is not
squared but I know that Sebastien Bacher wrote a hack to display the same icon
in the indicator bar (and the system settings menu).

  1. In the clock menu, find the calendar app and launch it.
  2. In the Launcher or Dash, find the Calendar app.

  What you see:
  1. The icon always says "25", regardless of the actual date.
  2. The icon always says "28", regardless of the actual date.

  What you should see:
  1. The icon shows the current date.
  2. The icon shows the current date.

The equivalent for PC is bug 1362033, and for the Clock app is bug
  1362964.

This depends on bug 1453795 for Unity letting an app change its own
  icon.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1407921] Re: Indicator should give feedback when location-service is in use by apps

2016-05-26 Thread Matthieu James
We'll replace GPS symbol used for the location indicator by a more meaningful
icon that represent a pinned location. An update of the Suru icon theme will
soon include 3 new icons:
* location-inactive: when the location service is disabled
* location-idle: when enabled but not in use
* location-active: when used

Maybe the location icon should be dimmed when nothing is using it and

The Location spec has been revised in this regard. The new text reads:

  > The indicator should appear in the status bar
  > whenever an app has accessed your location in
  > the past five minutes. It should list all apps
  > that have accessed your location in the past
  > five minutes, most recent first. Choosing any

  > accessing location. “Location Settings…” should
  > navigate to the “Location” screen of System
  > Settings.

This bug is about the first part of that spec -- making the indicator
visible when it's active -- and is (currently) blocked on location-
  service bug #1536774.

The recent apps list component of the spec is covered in sibling bug
  #1235300.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1505970] Re: [Icons] Web Browser icon is not distinctive to the Ubuntu brand

2016-06-09 Thread Matthieu James
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1358050 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1358050

The pictograms have been designed several years ago to support the
communication around the Ubuntu brand. Their style is nice but too simple and
restrictive to be used to designing a complete and consistent Desktop/Phone OS
icon theme. The constraints are simply different.
Regarding the browser icon, I agree that it presents a lot of similarities with
the Safari icon but modifying its design is not a high priority for us at the
moment. But you can be confident that we are always improving and expanding the
Suru icon set (and especially core application icons).

the icon for the webbrowser-app does not use transparency, so is a big
square edged thing, which is inconsistent with other icons and looks
out of place on the dash and alt-tab. I don't know if phone icons are
supposed to meet the standards for desktop icons, or if desktop icons
should work well as phone icons, but if we are aiming for convergence
some kind of common ground is going to be required, or we end up with
a separate icon for desktop and phone?
