[Touch-packages] [Bug 1511476] Re: Unstable unity session

2015-11-03 Thread aldebx
JazZ, looks similar to Bug #1510970 , could you please verify if you
experience the same symptoms as described over there and if so mark this
bug as duplicate of #1510970 ? Thank you!

In my experience, I didn't run into this issue ever since upgrading to kernel
4.3. If you want, please join me in testing this.
Upcoming kernels can be downloaded from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Title:
  Unstable unity session

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,

My unity session crash randomly, when I am working on my computer, or
when nothing is done in my computer.

This occurs repeatedly since I have installed ubuntu 15.10.

This does not happen on my laptop. The main difference I noticed
between my computer and my laptop is that my laptop has an NVidia
Graphic card and my computer has an intel Core™ i5-2320 as CPU/GPU. So
  it has no Graphic Card.

Here you will find my syslog file content, during the crash :

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-11-03 Thread aldebx

@davefury, could you please try using kernel 4.3? In my case I didn't
run into this issue any more ever since I upgraded several days ago.
Upcoming kernels can be downloaded from http://kernel.ubuntu.com

Title:
lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Symptom: xorg crashes on windows creation

How to reproduce: No 100% reproducibility, however intensively using
2D/3D acceleration triggers the bug (e.g. by opening several new
windows and/or menus in a Unity desktop environment)

Affected hardware: Intel HD Graphics 4400/5000 etc
  Affected software:
  - kernel 4.2.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 15:35:06 UTC 2015 x86_64
  - Ubuntu 15.10 with Unity (because of compiz 2D/3D acceleration)
  - any other software using direct rendering (e.g. VLC)

  Workaround:
  - Disable window animations in Compiz reduces the frequency of the crashes.
Use compizconfig-settings-manager for this tweak (sudo apt-get install
compizconfig-settings-manager)

  [original description below]

I get crashes, when I open a new window in an already started
application. It happens irregularely, but I can force the crash if I
open several new message windows in thunderbird. But it also happens
in other applilcations, for example a new terminal window.

This is the output during the crash in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1512097] Re: Random crashes of X11

2015-11-03 Thread aldebx
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1510970 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1510970

Look like same symptoms of bug #1510970

Disable window animations in Compiz reduces the frequency of the
crashes. Use compizconfig-settings-manager for this tweak (sudo apt-get
install compizconfig-settings-manager)

I didn't run into this issue for several days after upgrading to kernel 4.3
from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
Please join me in testing this.

Title:
  Random crashes of X11

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This seems to happen when opening a new window. Just when the new
window is going to open my screen goes black and I see the last lines
of the boot process like I switched to the first virtual terminal. I
wait a second or two and then I'm back at the login screen. Xorg
crash log attached. The report 1509846 seems to be very similar to the
behavior of what I'm seeing. I've tried turning off the animations in
compiz now and will see how it goes.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-11-03 Thread aldebx
@davefury , because this is not a bug of compiz, so disabling window
animations is a workaround only to the extent it doesn't trigger the
intel driver/xorg bug while opening windows/menus. Other software that
use the graphic card is still capable of triggering the bug, for example
I was able to crash xorg while playing a video with totem.

In your case what were you doing when the crash happened?

** Description changed:

Symptom: xorg crashes on windows creation

How to reproduce: No 100% reproducibility, however intensively using
2D/3D acceleration triggers the bug (e.g. by opening several new windows
and/or menus in a Unity desktop environment)

Affected hardware: Intel HD Graphics 4400/5000 etc
  Affected software:
  - kernel Linux 4.2.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP x86_64
  - also affected is kernel Linux 4.2.5-040205-generic x86_64
  - Ubuntu 15.10 with Unity (because of compiz 2D/3D acceleration)
  - any other software using direct rendering (e.g. VLC)

  Workaround:
  - Disable window animations in Compiz reduces the frequency of the crashes.
Use compizconfig-settings-manager for this tweak (sudo apt-get install
compizconfig-settings-manager)
  - Use XFCE or LXDE also reduces the frequency of crashes given that these
desktop environments are 2D only

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.10
  Package: xorg 1:7.7+7ubuntu4
  Uname:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1511819] Re: Xorg crash

2015-10-30 Thread aldebx
I also suffer from this exact bug, as several other users do and have
reported in a number of other bugs such as:

bug #1509846
bug #1511615
bug #1511704
bug #1511512
bug #1511476
bug #1510998
bug #1511343
bug #1511145
bug #1509622
bug #1509355
bug #1506321
etc.

Common patterns are:
- Intel graphic cards
- Ubuntu 15.10
- Unity desktop environment
- Xorg crashes while opening a window or menu within applications such as
thunderbird/libreoffice/etc.

It's just a matter of time before you will be asked to update your bios,
the bug will be marked invalid, and Ubuntu 15.10 will be another
successful milestone for Microsoft Windows. Cheers.

Meanwhile, you can reduce the occurrence of this bug by disabling window
animations in Compiz. Use compizconfig-settings-manager for this tweak
(sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager). You can also use
desktop environments such as XFCE and LXDE which do not use compiz.

I get crashes, when I open a new window in an already started
application. It happens irregularely, but I can force the crash if I
open several new message windows in thunderbird. But it also happens
in other applilcations, for example a new terminal window.

This is the output during the crash in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-10-29 Thread aldebx
I've just experienced a xorg crash with 4.2.5-040205-generic while
opening a properties window inside libreoffice (with compiz animations
enabled) :/

Hw specs and logs of my case are attached to bug #1511615 . Thank you
for reviewing and analyzing them.

How to reproduce: No 100% reproducibility, however intensively using
2D/3D acceleration triggers the bug (e.g. by opening several new windows

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-10-29 Thread aldebx
@penalvch, thank you for assisting.

I've flagged a few other bugs as duplicates of this one to assist
developers in tracking this issue given that several other users are
experiencing xorg crashes on Intel graphic cards while they open new
windows or menus in various applications using unity+compiz in Ubuntu
15.10

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-10-29 Thread aldebx
@rubo77, after identifying the problem to be likely with the Intel
graphic driver, I've been testing Kernel 4.2.5-040205-generic
#201510270124 SMP Tue Oct 27 01:25:49 UTC 2015 x86_64 for the past 6
hours, and it seems not to trigger any crash despite using 2D/3D graphic
acceleration in Unity/Compiz and other applications.

Kernel versions can be downloaded from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
Please join me in testing if this bug has been fixed upstream in kernel version
4.2.5-040205-generic and up.

Title:
lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

  Solution:
  - upgrade kernel (which includes newer Intel graphic drivers)
  Kernel 4.2.5-040205-generic #201510270124 SMP Tue Oct 27 01:25:49 UTC 2015
seems not to trigger this issue, more testing ahead.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-10-29 Thread aldebx
This bug is related to the intel graphics driver, which is used by
compiz. However is not a compiz as I managed to crash xorg in a XFCE
session as well while watching a movie with VLC.

Disabling compiz windows animations helps as workaround for this bug
while opening new windows/menus, but does not fix the bug itself as any
other app using accelerated graphics can make xorg to crash.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-10-28 Thread aldebx
I confirm that, as reported by @rubo77, this issue does not happen using
non-Compiz desktop environments such as XFCE.

In the Ubuntu session, every time xorg crashes this happens _always_ on
a window/menu creation (i.e. after clicking on anything that should
display a new window or a new menu). However, not all window/menu
creations cause the xorg to crash.

I'm now testing a session with the "animations" plugin of Compiz
disabled, and will report if this is a valid workaround.

To disable the plugin use compizconfig-settings-manager
 sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Thank you very much @penalvch for your guidance on collecting useful bug
reports. Really appreciated.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 Yoga 2 Pro

2015-10-25 Thread aldebx
I experience exactly the same problems as rubo77, and especially (but
not limited to) when opening multiple windows or menus in Thunderbird. I
also have exactly the same software/hardware configuration, except my
video card is Intel(R) HD Graphics 5000.

In my case the crash log is:

Title:
lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 15.10 I get crashes, when I open a new window in an already
started application. It happens irregularely, but I can force the
crash if I open several new message windows in thunderbird. But it
also happens in other applilcations, for example a new terminal
  window.

This is the output during the crash in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
