[Touch-packages] [Bug 1931612] Re: Print dialog box shows same printer twice

2021-06-18 Thread brian_p
Hello again, Timur,

Thanks for pushing this upstream. In your first post you
said:

> Applications that have their own print dialog box do not
> have this problem. For example, Firefox shows only my
> printer once. Same thing with Libre Office.

LibreOffice gets all its print dialog entries via cups. It
does not use the GTK print dialog. That is why the issue
does not show up there. In which of your applications does
the issue appear?

Also, what is your Firefox version?

Cheers,

Brian.

Print dialog box shows same printer twice

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have set up a single HP printer which is attached to my network.
The setup process went smoothly, and when I open the Printers system
setup panel, I see only my printer there.

However, when I print from an application, and that application uses
the system print dialog box, my printer appears twice. One entry,
matching the name correctly, works fine. The other, which a slightly
changed name, does not work at all. See attached screenshot.

Applications that have their own print dialog box do not have this
problem. For example, Firefox shows only my printer once. Same thing
  with Libre Office.

That's because that entry is controlled by cups. The
other one isn't. As I said, cups is not involved in
producing the duplicate entry. File a bug against GTK.

  systemctl start cups-browsed

to get your working entry back.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1931612] Re: Print dialog box shows same printer twice

2021-06-11 Thread brian_p
The print dialog box is generated GTK. The Printers system setup
dialog is probably generated by Qt.

Stop cups:

  systemctl stop cups

Which entry remains in the GTK print dialog box?

I would guess - the first one. Therefore cups is not involved
in its display.

This very probably not a bug in cups or any other printing package,
but a GTK bug. See

Giving the cupsfilter command was a hint to try it and report back. The
suggestion to use the everywhere model was a also hint to get you
printing without too much effort.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1834400] Re: pc reports that HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 printed file, but nothing has printed

2019-06-29 Thread brian_p
The 8715 has been supported since HPLIP 3.16.5. I cannot understand why
you cannot use a version which is packaged by your distro. Not unless
your objective is to help test 3.19.5/3.19.6.

>From your error_log:

 > PID 11639 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups) stopped with status 127 (File
too large)

I've never seen this before and do not understand it.

 > [Job 81] Unable to open raster stream - : Broken pipe
 > [Job 81] GPL Ghostscript 9.26: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

Perturbing. On Debian unstable (HPLIP 3.18.12) I can set up a print
queue for your printer and (as root) do

cupsfilter -p /etc/cups/ppd/8715.ppd -m printer/foo -e
/etc/nsswitch.conf > out.dat 2>log

The log shows no errors.

If your objective is to get printing working, I would set up one of
these queues:

 lpadmin -p 8715 -v ipp://HPFC3FDBEFEEC1.local:631/ipp/print -E -m
everywhere

 lpadmin -p 8715 -v ipp://HPFC3FDBEFEEC1.local:631/ipp/print -E -m
driverless:ipp://HPFC3FDBEFEEC1.local:631/ipp/print

It seems that the only way to contact the printer is with the cnijjet
backend. One last last thing if you would: execute

/usr/lib/cups/backend/cnijet

and give us the output.

Thanks for your co-operation.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1808581] Re: cannot print to Canon MX860 after upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04

2018-12-15 Thread brian_p
Thanks.

Ok, there is no port 9100, so socket:// will not work. One lives and
learns!

Looking at the error_log again all the filters complete successfully:

D [14/Dec/2018:13:16:23 -0600] [Job 478] 4 filters for job:
D [14/Dec/2018:13:16:23 -0600] [Job 478] bannertopdf
(application/vnd.cups-pdf-banner to application/pdf, cost 32)
D [14/Dec/2018:13:16:23 -0600] [Job 478] pdftopdf (application/pdf to
application/vnd.cups-pdf, cost 66)
D [14/Dec/2018:13:16:23 -0600] [Job 478] gstoraster (application/vnd.cups-pdf
to application/vnd.cups-raster, cost 99)
D [14/Dec/2018:13:16:23 -0600] [Job 478] rastertogutenprint.5.2
(application/vnd.cups-raster to printer/MX860, cost 100)

Search for "exited" and "normally".

All that cnijnet:/ does is transport what rastertogutenprint.5.2
produces to the printer. Perhaps the printer is unhappy with the input
from gutenprint? I cannot test this.

I can only suggest you use the Canon drivers.

Looks good. But nothing printed, eh.

What do we have for

2018-12-15 Thread brian_p
> -rw-r- 1 root lp 131822 Dec 14 13:17 MX860.ppd

There is nothing wrong here. A PPD is not readable by a user process,
only by one with root privileges. Whatever you ran did not have root
privileges.

You are using the gutenprint PPD for MX860; no problem there.

Now do

 lpadmin -p mx860 -v socket:// -E -P
/etc/cups/ppd/MX860.ppd

and print with

 lp -d mx860 /etc/nsswitch.conf

I am guessing that the Canon printer accepts jobs on port 9100 - most
printers do.

You could also set up lpadmin with -v cnijnet:/00-1E-8F-74-5A-78 and see
how you go on.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1808581] Re: cannot print to Canon MX860 after upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04

2018-12-15 Thread brian_p
I'm a little perplexed, Kim, because CUPS appears not to detect your
printer. Anyway, we'll leave that on one side and look at the error_log
and at the line

  "DEVICE_URI=cnijnet:/00:1E:8F:74:5A:78"

I am not familiar with Canon printers, but this looks like a
misconfiguration. From what I see elsewhere, it should be

  "DEVICE_URI=cnijnet:/00-1E-8F-74-5A-78"

I would expect this (ofter called JetDirect) to work too:

  "DEVICE_URI=socket://"

There should be a PPD for the print queue in /etc/cups/pppd. What does
its *cupsFilter line show?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1806226] Re: Dell C2665dnf gets broken installation

2018-12-02 Thread brian_p
> Printing a test page gives 016-720 PDL error.

The search engine I used had the first two pages devoted to this error.
You would, of course, searched for a solution in the same way. From the
number of issues, one could be forgiven for thinking this is a printer
problem and not a Ubuntu one.

> ipp://Dell-C2665dnf-D38EA3.local:631/ipp/print

This appears to be the URI for the printer. Check with the driverless
and ippfind utilities.

Now set up this print queue

lpadmin -p 2660 -v ipp://Dell-C2665dnf-D38EA3.local:631/ipp/print -E -m
everywhere

and print to 2660. The outcome?

  Dell C2665dnf gets broken installation

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
My apologies if this is the wrong package to file this bug against...

I just installed 18.04 on a new machine. Very conveniently, it found
my Dell C2665dnf printer and set up an ipp printer for it.
Unfortunately, the printer configuration doesn't work. Printing a
test page gives 016-720 PDL error.

I can install the Dell-created printer filter and PPD and create a
printer that works fine, and I have this setup on another 18.04
  machine.

The link is not similar to the previous one. It looks like the upgrade

There is nothing to be done by you, but I have seen this issue appear at
least five times so it wouldn't be unreasonable to see the upgrade
process as flawed. What do you get now for

  ls -l /usr/share/ghostscript/ ?

Thanks for the feedback.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1738432] Re: Regression, poor user experience, print dialogs garbled by unidentifiable driverless printers

2017-12-17 Thread brian_p
You were very clear in your first message that cups-browsed had been
stopped. I can think of a reason for your observations (and why
disabling avahi-daemon is a way of not seeing network discoverd
printers) but it depends on what applications you are using. This is why
I was interested in the answers to the questions, particularly

 > In which print dialogs do the driverless extra printers
 > appear? Of which applications?

I am going to assume (not my usual practice!) that the issue is seen
with Firefox and Evince. Next time you observe these printers appearing.
stop cups on the client. Are they still in the print dialog?

(Stopping cups stops cups-browsed. Starting cups-browsed also starts
cups).

Regression, poor user experience, print dialogs garbled by

Bug description:
Recently, my print dialogs have started to include network discoverd
printers in addition to those configured in cups even if the cups-
browsed service is disabled and the BrowseRemoteProtocols option is
  set to none.

There does not seem to be any way to disable this behavior apart from
disabling avahi or its ability to talk to dbus, which causes side
  effects on the system.

Yet, in some environments this behavior is a definite regression over
the old one and leads to an extremely poor user experience.

  On some networks:

  - The print dialogs takes 3-10 sec to open which is a huge amount of
time for an action that is expected to be instantaneous and for which
  there is no visual feedback.

  - The print dialog contains many tens of printer entries, all
identified by weird hex strings that cannot be related to any useful
location, that do not help identifying which entry corresponds to
which printer and that only mess up the list making it hard to find
the printers that are actually useful.

For instance, suppose that you work at some office that has recently
purchased a batch of new printers all the same model. In the print
dialog you may get many entries like:

  HP_Laserjet_Pro_Mxxxdw_21ACF2

which only vary in the final hex string. How is one suppose to know
  what is where?

Please make it possible to disable this driverless printer madness.

dialog you may get many entries like:

  HP_Laserjet_Pro_Mxxxdw_21ACF2

which only vary in the final hex string. How is one suppose to know
  what is where?

Please make it possible to disable this driverless printer madness.
