Title:
Secondary monitor not connecting in 18.04 LTS

Status in libxrandr package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an Acer Aspire V Nitro VN7-592G-709V with Nvidia Geforce 960M
(nvidia driver v390) and a Benq W1070 projector.

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and my projector connects
for a split second and then gets disconnected. In Ubuntu 16.04
projector was working fine as a mirror display and extended desktop.
  Here's what I already tried:

  - enable the nouveau driver instead of the nvidia driver -> no result
  - enable the on-board intel board with sudo prime-select intel -> no result
  - apt purge nvidia* & reinstall nvidia driver 390 (stable) or 396 (beta) ->
no result
  - disable nouveau driver, disable nvidia driver from the repository and
install nvidia driver from nvidia website (both 390 and 396) -> no result
  - installed CCSM (CompizConfig Settings Manager) and disabled display
auto-detection -> no result
  - played around with the refresh rate (some forums say that the two outputs
have to be in sync -> no result
  - deleted the whole Ubuntu 18.04 upgrade and installed a fresh 18.04 -> still
the same issue
  - tried to manually enable the output with xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --mode
1920x1920 -> nothing
  - under settings -> devices -> displays I don't see a secondary display (just
the main one)

I have the latest libxrandr2, 2:1.5.1-1 under Ubuntu 18.04 (updated to
  day)

Here is the output of xrandr the very second when I connect the
projector (then HDMI-1-2 goes disconnected and no modes are
  displayed):

2018-04-24 Thread Jb
This may be a dumb question.

But is "suggests" as mentioned above, the same thing as "recommends" in
terms of APT parameter?

>From my log the command invoked has "-o APT::Install-Recommends=true".
I.e. will it still pull it in if it's "suggests"?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1754646] Re: Texts in the dialogues are faulty on alternate installer

2018-04-14 Thread Jb
I do not speak/read Swedish.

But this shows up right after picking "Svenska" and selecting
"Installera Lubuntu". The very next prompt has the "" text in the
installer and it happens 100% of the time.

Den valda platsen kommer att

Note: I do not speak Swedish...nor do I have a Swedish keyboard. So
after selecting "Svenska" I pressed F3 and set it to "Canada" so that my
keyboard allows me to type the underscore character.

I'm booting in legacy mode so this tweak gets more debug info:
- press F6 to get additional options
- hit escape at the pop-up, and then pressed the left arrow three times so the
cursor is positioned in front of the "---" in the boot command line.
- added this to the boot options: DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer DEBCONF_C_VALUES=true
- add an extra space after =true
- hit enter to start the install.

Similar trick works in UEFI mode, just hit "e" to edit the command line,
etc.

When I see the onscreen I switched to an alternate console
(control-alt-f2) and hit enter to activate the console:

tail -n 50 /var/log/syslog | more

It's choking on debconf string: localechooser/shortlist TXT2

"Den valda platsen kommer att " the next word in this string is
"anvandas" (with the second a having the umlaut double-dots on top).

I am troubleshooting this further, but hope it helps those who do.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1746807] Re: 18.04 daily installer fails missing kernel

2018-02-16 Thread Jb
Only one package needs to be downgraded for apt-cdrom to work again:
libapt-pkg5.0 to version: libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha5

http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/a/apt/apt_1.6~alpha7ubuntu1/changelog

Links used for testing:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/353920547/libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha7_amd64.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/353116448/libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha6_amd64.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/345537288/libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha5_amd64.deb

For each ... I manually "dpkg -i" and then ran "apt-cdrom add".

Results:
libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha7ubuntu1 = fails <-- stock Bionic 20180216
libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha7ubuntu = fails
libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha6 = fails
libapt-pkg5.0_1.6~alpha5 = works <-- Bionic 20180131

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1746807] Re: 18.04 daily installer fails missing kernel

2018-02-16 Thread Jb
TLDR: try rebuilding the iso downgrading the four packages
/pool/main/a/apt/*.deb to 1.6~alpha 5?

Note: I pasted the info backwards...it's 1.6~alpha 5 that's the good
version.

As a test...I tried manually downgrading apt*.deb on-the fly:

I created a virtual machine with a second (empty) cdrom drive. Once I
got the missing kernel:

I switch to alternate terminal..
chroot /target

"apt-cdrom add" gives same error...

Mounted the GOOD 20180131 iso into the vm as the second cdrom.
mkdir /blah
mount /dev/sr1 /blah
cd /blah/pool/main/a/apt
dpkg -i *.deb
cd /
umount /blah

i.e. force load previous apt and apt-cdrom packages.

apt-cdrom

This no longer gives the error.

Just as a test...

cd /media/cdrom/pool/main/a/apt <-- original bad cdrom
dpkg -i *.deb

i.e. force load bad apt/apt-cdrom packages from latest 20180216

apt-cdrom

This gives the stat no such file or directory error.

So...downgrading the four packages /pool/main/a/apt/*.deb should work around
the issue?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1746807] Re: 18.04 daily installer fails missing kernel

2018-02-16 Thread Jb
When the install was in progress on the good/at the point of failure on
the bad I did:

control-f2 to activate another terminal
chroot /target
apt
apt-cdrom

good 20180130: apt 1.6~alpha 7 (amd64)
bad 20180216 : apt 1.6~alpha 5 (amd64)

So yes, the version of apt/apt-cdrom is different.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2014-11-17 Thread JB
Bug affects me too. I have installed Mint on a Dell Latitude E7440. Mint
16 (based on Ubuntu) worked perfectly for a few months (even if mouse
was very sensitive) then the left button started not responding. Now it
responds for a few minutes when I log in and then start not to work
anymore. Plus, sometimes random click seem to occur and it seems that
the left button is always engaged, resulting in selection of everything
(files etc) I go over. I have tried to install a more recent version of
Mint as well as Unbuntu and none of those work. Not a hardware pb as
similar pb with external mouse and mouse + touchpad work perfectly on
Windows on the same comp. I am stuck and cant use linux only software
that I need for my work. Bug is of high priority at least to me :{

Title:
  Left mouse button stops working

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops
and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron
  15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in
gmail, by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a
Firefox user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not
happened if i dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible
that the plugin is to blame.

  Symptom
  ===
The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will
not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This
happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to
function as normal.

When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log
out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as
  normal.

This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and
desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. I will
appreciate any soltion or workaround.

This doesn't prevent dvdbackup from finishing up, and the resulting
copy looks to be fine (on cursory inspection). While dvdbackup is
running, the issue also doesn't cause an OOM as in Bug #377414. Still,
  I tested libdvdread4_4.2.0+20130428-0ubuntu0~bryce~precise1_amd64.deb
from Bryce Harrington's PPA [1], but it just slightly changed the
  Zero check failed output:

*** Zero check failed in ifo_read.c:904

*** Zero check failed in ifo_read.c:904

This DVD is the only one I've come across manifesting this, and I've
backed up some 40 DVDs so far on this same setup.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 570790] Re: Crashes when pgci_ut handle is NULL

Fixed upstream.

Title:
Crashes when pgci_ut handle is NULL

Status in “libdvdnav” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm trying to use VLC 1.0.2 on Ubuntu 9.10. This version of Ubuntu
  uses libdvdnav_4.1.3

When playing most DVD iso files, this combination of VLC and
libdvdread works well. However, some iso files causes VLC to crash at
start-up with the error message shown at the bottom of this report.

It seems that libdvdread aborts if pgci_ut is set to NULL. I've tried
removing the assert() calls that are causing the abort and instead
returned error values. When that happens, VLC spits out an infinite
  loop of

  libdvdnav: *** pgci_ut handle is NULL ***

At the moment, I'm uncertain whether the issue is with libdvdread not
handling the error properly, or if it is VLC that fails to catch the issue.
I've found the latest version of mplayer can play the DVD iso files, so it's
not just a case of a corrupted file.

The original error output is included below and here is a link to a bug
report I've filed against VLC for the same issue:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/570716

[Touch-packages] [Bug 570790] Re: Crashes when pgci_ut handle is NULL

Title:
Crashes when pgci_ut handle is NULL

Status in “libdvdnav” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Title:
Totem does not play full unscrambled dvd

Status in “libdvdnav” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: totem

  Ubuntu karmic, fully upgraded.

I have a set of commercial DVDs (Ghost in the Shell, polish edition)
(all of them are reported as unscrambled, or not encrypted, by
libdvdcss2, which I do have installed).

When I try to watch them in totem (either by choosing totem in the
dialog window which shows up just after the cd is inserted, or by
calling `totem dvd://`), totem starts up but does not show anything.
The application does not hang or crash -- simply nothing is played,
the video is blank, I cannot press play button and the video
  properties are blank.

The same set of DVDs do work (as in: can be played) when I launch
totem by `totem dvd://2` (or any other valid title number)... as long
as the title chosen is not 1 or the title with menu (this varies in
different DVDs). So: `totem dvd://1` does not work, `totem dvd://2`
  works, ... `totem dvd://10` works, `totem dvd://11` does not work (and
it contains the main menu). For numbers which work the video
properties pane shows all the data correctly.

Xine from `xine-ui` package plays them correctly and shows the
animated menu... but I cannot manipulate it (its DVD menu controls
  does not work).

mplayer does play all the DVDs too, again I could not manipulate the
menu there (even with `-dvdnav` option).

I would provide a backtrace, but none of the programs crash... so I
think it wouldn't do much. I'm filling this to totem because it
doesn't even show the menu. The funny thing is, that totem used to
work correctly before an upgrade somewhere during last Christmas; if
someone points me to an archive with older karmic packages, I'd test
  them.
