[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2020-12-04 Thread Matteo
I solved this issue by
1) Not connecting to the internet while it installs
2) Not take any third party software in the process
other than that I followed the regular installation process, whipping my disk.

Took a lot of time for me to get the process working, but as far I can
understand most of the reason was due to my processor (AMD® Ryzen 9
3900x) not having any graphical support, and my GeForce GTX 1650 not
working.

Hope they figure out what went wrong in the process,

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Installations that really succeeded would then fail because APT could not
immediately configure a package. Which is a pointless way to fail at that
point, because everything did work out anyway.

  So what we do is change that to a warning.

  [Test case]
  Not available right now. Issues can flare up and then disappear again.

  [Regression potential]
  It's imaginable that we missed something somewhere and some path that checked
for a set error doesn't check it anymore, and we report success when we hit an
error, but it seems unlikely.

  Behavior of --simulate changes. This used to fail before as well, and
  will now only produce a warning. We don't believe that is a reason of
  concern.

  [Groovy SRU]
  The groovy SRU is a sync of the 2.1.11 micro release from Debian unstable
which also incorporates changes to the documentation: A typo fix, replacing
focal with groovy in examples, and minor Dutch manual pages translation updates.

  We do not have test cases for the documentation changes, and we do not
  consider there to be a huge regression potential. As long as they
  build, they should be readable - maybe some words are wrong in the
  translation, who knows.

  [Original bug report]
  Test Case
  1. Install Ubuntu Desktop on hardware with an nVidia card and select to
install 3rd party drivers
  2. Proceed with installation

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1481240] Re: Can't get correct location information before use other GPS apps

2016-10-23 Thread Matteo
Nearby GPS positioning has got many problems. It is a very slow process
at phone start-up and it doesn't work very well in my opinion. I'm in
Italy, in Rome, and before to find the exact location, it takes always
at least 4/5 attempts: it's frustrating. My phone is a BQ Aquaris E5. I
have to tell also that same problems I find with HERE, Google Maps and
uNav, sign that this is a Ubuntu Touch general problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1635990] [NEW] Missing WiFi connection when phone goes dark

2016-10-23 Thread Matteo
Public bug reported:

When I'm at home and I turn on my own WiFi home network, I can connect
to it from my BQ Aquaris E5 without any problem. Sadly, I noticed that
when the phone darkens for a while and I turn on back the screen, the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1883673] [NEW] no sound after resume

2020-06-16 Thread Matteo Dell'Amico
Public bug reported:

Hi!

After a suspend/resume cycle with HDMI plugged in, it seems that
pulseaudio doesn't recognize anymore the internal analog device
(speakers/headphones) and I hear no sound. Before suspend I see two
audio sinks through "pacmd list-sinks" (internal analog and HDMI), and
after resume I only get HDMI audio. Still, audio only ever comes out of
the internal device.

A "killall pulseaudio" solves this for me (i.e., I get audio from the
internal device).

This looks a bit similar to the old bug #202089, but I don't know if
it's the same.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1669055] [NEW] TZ is not set by default

2017-03-01 Thread Matteo Croce
Public bug reported:

It seems that unsetting the environment variable TZ there is a huge
performance penalty calling some glibc functions, eg. time()

this has been documented here:

https://blog.packagecloud.io/eng/2017/02/21/set-environment-variable-
save-thousands-of-system-calls/

and I can confirm it on an amd64 system running Yakkety:

$ cat time.c
#include

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
int i = 0;
time_t timep;

for (i = 0; i < 1000; i++) {
time(&timep);
localtime(&timep);
}

return 0;
}
$ gcc -Wall -O3 time.c -o time
$ time ./time

real0m7.102s
user0m2.060s
sys 0m5.040s
$ time TZ=:/etc/localtime ./time

real0m0.952s
user0m0.948s
sys 0m0.000s
$

I've set TZ in /etc/environment to have it globally defined.

Same bug for me: /etc/resolv.conf was pointing to

Title:
  resolvconf not correctly configured after update from 17.04 to 17.10

Status in resolvconf package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  After having updated my laptop from Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10, the DNS
  lookup on my wireless network connection did not work any more.

  As it seems, the file /etc/resolv.conf was static and contained wrong
  data assigned by the NetworkManager. When I changed the file content
  manually to

nameserver 127.0.0.53

  DNS lookup worked fine. After reboot, however, I had to repeat this
  operation since NetworkManager seems to have replaced the file
  content.

  Finally, I found a solution. Running

  sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf

  the file /etc/resolv.conf was replaced by the link

  /etc/resolv.conf -> ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf

  Now, the wireless network seems to work properly.

  Hence, there must be some kind of bug during the update process from
  Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 that impedes resolvconf to be configured
  properly.

  Best regards,

  Artur

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-07-25 Thread Matteo Capobianco
I'm having this problem on a machine that doesn't have dbus-user-session
installed, nor it ever had it installed.

The problem started to appear after installing Google Chrome (although
it was quite fresh: I hadn't use it for anything else, apart from
opening Firefox to download Chrome).

Note: it was a Ubuntu Server machine "converted" to Desktop by
installing the ubuntu-desktop metapackage.

  4) gnome-keyring is not unlocked, chrome takes 2 minutes to open and with no
secure password features(sync) functioning.

  For the past couple days, chrome on Ubuntu 16.04 takes a REALLY long
  time (maybe 2 minutes) to start. Once chrome is started, I am not able
  to sync and any secure password features are broken. I found out this
  is due to gnome-keyring not being unlocked at login. There's also no
  way to unlock the "login" portion of the keyring from the running
  daemon by default. I have to kill the gnome-keyring process and start
  without "--login" as a parameter. Then the "login" section shows up
  which I'm able to unlock. From there chrome starts up instantly but
  asks the following:

  Enter password to unlock your login keyring
  The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer

  After that, all of it's sync and secure features are functional.

  Starting google-chrome-stable from a command line at boot without
  running the above workaround shows the following error messages:

  Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1322275] Re: lightdm sessions started by dm-tool lock (or a session locker) never get closed

2015-11-02 Thread Matteo Panella
It looks like that nobody is actually issuing the indicator-services-end
upstart signal, so the stop events of *all* indicators for lightdm
sessions never get fired. The other indicators just die because the
session bus disappears under their feet, but indicator-sound-service
keeps hanging around (even respawning pulseaudio in some cases!).

I don't really know who's at fault here - IMHO not upstart, which is
doing the right thing (respawning dead indicators until they try to
respawn too fast). Perhaps the greeter should clean after itself - after
all, the indicator-services-start is fired by it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1322275] Re: lightdm sessions started by dm-tool lock (or a session locker) never get closed

2016-01-29 Thread Matteo Panella
> Can you see if this solves the issue on your computers?

No luck here (Xubuntu 14.04), what actually did fix the issue was
installing the latest stable release of lightdm-gtk-indicator from the
upstream ppa. This caused a few hiccups with the Greybird theme, but at
least the ghost sessions are gone without any kind of workaround.

This is a glaring red sign that neither lightdm nor upstart are the
appropriate packages for this issue, but lightdm-gtk-greeter is.

Anyone proficient with bzr willing to perform a bisect between 2.0.1
(ppa - working) and 1.8.5 (trusty-updates, not working)?

Title:
  apt's lists/partial fills disk

Status in APT:
  New
Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Since I upgraded to vivid, apt fills the disk space at
  /var/lib/apt/lists/partial. This was triggered by the automatic update
  every day, and as a solution I killed the processes named `http`
  spawned by apt, and removed the offending file from lists/partial
  manually. Until now, `apt-get update` and `apt-get upgrade` had been
  working. However, today, when I tried `apt-get update`, it got stuck
  in some file, continuously increasing its size when at 100%.

  I tried inspecting the file to see if there is a repetition of data,
  and there seems to be, as I have suspected.

  First of all, the file is it.archive.ubuntu
  .com_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_binary-i386_Packages.bz2 this time, but
  I'm not sure if the previous time it was also this file.

  I used `tail` and `hexdump` to figure out whether a certain pattern
  shows up in the file. Here are some examples:

  $ tail -c 20
it.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_binary-i386_Packages.bz2 |
hexdump | grep '\'
  c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a

  0020c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a
  0030c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a

  $ tail -c 20
it.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_binary-i386_Packages.bz2 |
hexdump | grep '\<9b95\>'
  c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a
  0010c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a
  0020c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a
  0030c80 8d9e 63ad bbdf 40a7 3f3e 2b4a 9b95 aa5a

  $ tail -c 20
it.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_binary-i386_Packages.bz2 |
hexdump | grep '\<1234\>'
  0002630 fd50 b08d 7082 1234 85b3 a61e 2921 e0cd
  0012630 fd50 b08d 7082 1234 85b3 a61e 2921 e0cd
  0022630 fd50 b08d 7082 1234 85b3 a61e 2921 e0cd

  $ tail -c 20
it.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_binary-i386_Packages.bz2 |
hexdump | grep '\<76a8\>'
  000fa90 747d 76a8 078a 67b6 60d9 83f5 5ff3 787c
  001fa90 747d 76a8 078a 67b6 60d9 83f5 5ff3 787c
  002fa90 747d 76a8 078a 67b6 60d9 83f5 5ff3 787c

  As you can see, it seems that after the error, a certain pattern seems
  to repeat every exactly 0x1 bytes. I attached a copy of those
  0x1 bytes that keep repeating (from an arbitrary offset).

  Do let me know if I can test further to see what could be wrong. I'll

  the problem could be the Italy server, let me know and I'll try with a

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1314780] Re: Full screen between xorg and VMWare-Workstation

2015-01-05 Thread Matteo Dell'Amico
I can confirm the same bug on WMWare Workstation 11 and Ubuntu 14.10.

Title:
  Full screen between xorg and VMWare-Workstation

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  This is a minor bug that seems to be a conflict between xorg and
  VMWare Workstation 9 in Ubuntu 14.04. It seems most noticeable and
  prevalent with dual monitors. This issue was not present in 12.04. The
  taskbar at the top of the screen that is always present seems to give
  issues with full screen VMWare. In 12.04, it would stay at the top for
  a bit and then go away if you clicked anywhere in the full screen
  window. With 14.04, it doesn't show up at all anymore but it is still
  "there". It is a ghost of it and then will be a selectable option. If
  you click in the full screen window anywhere, the taskbar does not
  show at the top, but it is still selectable as an option. The "focus"
  does not go to the full screen. You can do things in there as long as
  the thing you are trying to do doesn't reside at the top of the screen
  where it would be the taskbar. Once you select the "top of the screen
  where the taskbar should be, this makes the VMWare window the active
  window in xorg, it then goes on top of the taskbar again. This is a
  major inconvenience bug because when you try to select anything in the
  top right while the taskbar is still "on top" of the full screen
  without appearing to be on top, it will select either the calendar or
  power settings or anything up in the top right.

  Attached are screenshots as the process happens.

  Step 1. Click on the screen which ISN'T FULL SCREEN VMWARE.
  Step 2. Click anywhere in full screen VMWare window except top where taskbar
resides. Taskbar is hidden but still "on top".
  Step 3. Click where taskbar is in right corner and it will overtake the full
screen window. You can select date, power, english, etc..
  Step 4. Click anywhere else at very top of screen, taskbar will then go away
and VMWare fullscreen will work properly.

  EDIT: Apparently I have been calling the bar at the top the wrong
  name. It's MenuBar. The Ubuntu MenuBar is not playing well with
  fullscreen VMWare Workstation. It also doesn't show up for using File,
  Edit, etc...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1362521] Re: juno: not a valid cloud-archive name

2014-10-19 Thread Matteo Panella
Right now, the only way of getting Juno on 14.04 is by using the old
manual method (eg. install ubuntu-cloud-keyring and create a listfile in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d).

I'd wait for the greenlight from Canonical, though: the last upload
happened two days ago, so the archive might still not be ready for prime
time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1362521] Re: juno: not a valid cloud-archive name

2014-10-23 Thread Matteo Panella
As far as software-properties is concerned, the issue is being tracked
in lp:1350291 (perhaps this issue should be marked as a duplicate of
that one for software-properties and Invalid for ubuntu-cloud-archive).

The updated package is in trusty-proposed and I can confirm it works, it
only needs verification from the SRU Team before it's migrated to
trusty-updates.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1362521] Re: juno: not a valid cloud-archive name

2014-10-23 Thread Matteo Panella
@Tom:
I can just report that the package is in a "worksforme" status as far as the
issue is concerned, I'm in no way affiliated with Canonical or the SRU Team :-)

If at least another user could verify it and comment on the issue (per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification ) things should
be a bit faster.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1350291] Re: cloud-archive:juno unsupported

2014-10-23 Thread Matteo Panella
I can confirm that software-properties 0.92.37.2 fixes the original
issue on trusty, leaving "verification-needed" as-is since I performed
only limited testing for the issue at hand.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1392642] [NEW] Daemons are restarted in the current session cgroups

2014-11-14 Thread Matteo Panella
Public bug reported:

(forwarded from the relevant bug report raised in Debian BTS and adapted
for upstart as PID1)

Daemons which are not spawned via an upstart job (eg. those with
initscripts, ifupdown hooks and similar) are not detached from the
current logind session cgroups. This causes the session to linger in the
closing state until the background processes are either terminated or
manually moved by root into the root cgroups, so seat ACLs are not
released.

A (very crude) workaround on Debian Jessie is using cgm movepidabs / $$
to "break out" of the current session before performing any
administrative action which could result in a daemon (re)start, but
cgmanager is not installed by default on Trusty and the version of cgm
shipped with it lacks the movepidabs subcommand (even though the
MovePidAbs method in the DBus interface does exist).

Note that this affects anything that uses service, invoke-rc.d, ifupdown
hooks (like ifup on PPPoE links) or initscripts directly. Upstart jobs
are not affected because they inherit their cgroup set from PID1 (which
lives in the root cgroup).

Nota bene: I'm raising the issue on systemd-shim on advice from its
maintainer, even though it's unclear at what level this behavior should
be addressed.

Reassigning to sysvinit to keep it in sync with the upstream issue.
Also, it makes more sense given that changes should happen in files shipped by
sysvinit-utils and sysv-rc.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1546373] Re: Please update to 1.11

2016-10-23 Thread Matteo Cypriani
taglib 1.11.1 has just be released, and fixes an ABI breakage, cf.
https://bugs.debian.org/839767
I plan on uploading it in sid this week, and I would recommend that you wait
for this version to sync in Ubuntu.

(And indeed, qmmp 1.1 should not have been packaged without taglib >=
1.10. qmmp 1.1.4 is in sid now and works fine with taglib 1.11.)

  NM needs to re-read the DEVTYPE after the device name changed, an example is
that WiFi network list disappears from network manager applet

  [Testcase]
  1. Boot the system. It should include a wireless device.
  2. In a terminal, run 'nmcli dev'.
  3. In the correct case, the line for the wireless device should read "wifi"
under the TYPE column. In a failure case, it will read "ethernet".

  After upgrading to the new version, the repeating the above steps
  should give expected behavior.

  [Regression Potential]
  Potential of causing regression is relatively small for a one line change to
re-read a value to be known.

  ---

  Problems:-

  1. The network manager applet does not show the list of WiFI APs it can find.
  2. The network manager applet does not the name of the AP to which it is
connected
  3. The icon of the applet shows two vertical arrows in opposite direction -
the wired connection symbol and NOT the wifi connected icon.

  Temporary Workaround:-
  Log out and again log back in.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1624897] [NEW] Mouse pointer sometimes becomes invisible for a while

2016-09-18 Thread Matteo Dell'Amico
Public bug reported:

Sometimes the mouse pointer becomes invisible for a while; then -- and I
don't understand what triggers that -- it reappears. The mouse continues
working -- mouseover and clicking works, so the only problem is that the
pointer is invisible.

Happy to give you more details to help understand what's happening.

Running Ubuntu 16.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  I am running 15.10 development version fully up to date, I installed it a few
days ago and I have an issue with newly installed applications not appearing in
the dash when I search for them, they can be started via console but the
icons/launchers of newly installed applications will only appear in the dash
after session is restarted.

  [Test case]
  1. Install a new applicaiton (using apt-get or the software center)
  2. Make sure the application is listed in the Unity Dash

  [Possible Regressions]
  Unity fails to list all the applications, not just the newly installed ones.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408347] Re: bump version to 1.11 in ubuntu 15.04?

2015-11-03 Thread Matteo F. Vescovi
I'm working on testing GLEW 1.13.0 against its 63 reverse dependencies
right now and I really hope to be able to upload it to Debian
unstable/sid within the end of this month. So probably Ubuntu 16.04
should ship 1.13.0 ;-)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408347] Re: bump version to 1.11 in ubuntu 15.04?

2015-11-10 Thread Matteo F. Vescovi
FYI, it's done... GLEW 1.13.0 is building right now on Debian's buildd
infrastructure.

Have a look at:

  https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=glew

Cheers.
