[Touch-packages] [Bug 1531029] Re: Random Xorg crash while using Chrome

2016-01-27 Thread devbie
I cannot trigger the crash (it happens randomly)

As per your instructions, running:

sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

shows the attached pop up window and I get the following message on the
terminal:

'Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is
discouraged.'

Nothing is actually saved to /var/crash

Since I originally reported the crash, Chrome has been updated to
48.0.2564.82 (64-bit) but Xorg is still 1:7.7+7ubuntu4. I don't think I
have had any more crashes since then (but I haven't been using
Ubuntu/Chrome as much)

I originally had the following files in /var/crash:

-rw-r- 1 devbie whoopsie 1712230 Jan 17 15:17
_opt_google_chrome_chrome.1000.crash
-rw-r- 1 devbie whoopsie 613910 Jan 22 22:28
_usr_bin_atril-thumbnailer.1000.crash
-rw-rw-r-- 1 devbie whoopsie 0 Jan 22 22:28
_usr_bin_atril-thumbnailer.1000.upload
-rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie 0 Jan 22 22:28
_usr_bin_atril-thumbnailer.1000.uploaded
-rw-r- 1 devbie whoopsie 7143430 Jan 22 23:38
_usr_bin_mate-panel.1000.crash
-rw-r- 1 root whoopsie 4204066 Jan 18 22:17 _usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root whoopsie 0 Jan 18 22:17 _usr_bin_Xorg.0.upload
-rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie 0 Jan 18 22:17 _usr_bin_Xorg.0.uploaded

Presumably they relate to the bug and I have saved them for the time
being. Would they be useful & should I upload them (how would I do
this)?

Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1531029] Re: Random Xorg crash while using Chrome

2016-01-27 Thread devbie
> devbie, to advise, _my_crash_report is a placeholder for the actual
file name found in the folder.

I understand.

I have followed your instructions which include deleting the contents of
/var/crash before reproducing the crash, then calling

sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

but there are of course no files there as I haven't been able to trigger
the bug.

2 questions:

1) Given I cannot trigger the bug in a reproducible way - it happens
'randomly' - shall I use the files that were originally in /var/crash
before I followed your instructions (see my previous posting with the
list of those files). Something along the lines of:

sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash

2) Do I tag the crash reports with 'Bug 1531029' ? If so, how?

Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1531029] Re: Random Xorg crash while using Chrome

2016-01-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
devbie, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
However, your crash report is missing.

Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your
crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First, execute at a
terminal:
cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y
dist-upgrade && sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in
/etc/default/apport and restart. Now reproduce the crash, then open a terminal,
navigate to your /var/crash directory and file your report with:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. By
default, this sends the crash to the Ubuntu Error Tracker
infrastructure, which is different than Launchpad. For more on this,
please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker .

However, if after doing this you would still like to have a crash report posted
to Launchpad, for example to ease triage and add others to your report, one
would need to open the following file via a terminal:
sudo nano /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and file the crash report via:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

However, this report is being closed since the process outlined above
will deal with this issue more efficiently.

Also, please do not attach your crash report manually to this report and
reopen it.

Thank you for your understanding.

2016-01-26 Thread devbie
Hi Christopher

Sorry I didn't produce a full bug report (yet). I'm new to this process so
bear with me.

I'm at work right now and have to stick to the Windows environment for the
time being. Once I get home this evening I'll boot back to Linux and follow
your instructions

Thanks for your efforts making Linux great,
devbie

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1531029] Re: Random Xorg crash while using Chrome

2016-01-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
devbie, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please run the following command once from a terminal as it will
automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:
apport-collect -p xorg 1531029

Please ensure you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you
click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

When reporting xorg related bugs in the future, please do so via the
above method. You can learn more about this functionality at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
