[Touch-packages] [Bug 1533702] Re: Only 2 monitors detected via laptop docking station

Dell docking station is used, and this docking station comes with 2 x DVI, 2 x DisplayPort and 1 x VGA ports. I have 2 x 1980x1080 monitors - one is using DVI and the other on DisplayPort and both are detected fine. I also have a "spare" 20" monitor that is 1680x900 and only take VGA and this is plugged in. The laptop is configured to disable the use of Intel GPU and to use Nvidia GPU at all times. With nvidia-settings installed: On the login screen - all 4 displays are on (including laptop) although going to the VGA/laptop screen cause the screen to "scroll" with the cursor. After login - after much work which resulted in just the two HD monitors showing output and is configured via nvidia-settings. It only detects two displays. BUT going to the Display Settings - it shows all 4 screens and any attempts in using this can break things, Display Settings also freeze on every action for a short period of time. On a whim I decided to uninstall nvidia-settings to see how it might affect things. Display Settings now works without issues and it show only two detected screens - it does not detect the laptop screen or the VGA screen. What I expected: All 4 displays to be working but at a minimum all 3 external displays to be working, the laptop screen would be a bonus ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.10 Package: xorg 1:7.7+7ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.2.0-23.28-generic 4.2.6 Uname: Linux 4.2.0-23-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: bbswitch nvidia_modeset nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.registry: Binary: "" .proc.driver.nvidia.version: NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 361.16 Tue Dec 29 23:02:26 PST 2015 GCC version: gcc version 5.2.1 20151010 (Ubuntu 5.2.1-22ubuntu2) ApportVersion: 2.19.1-0ubuntu5 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Wed Jan 13 14:37:32 2016 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: wily DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: nvidia-361, 361.16, 4.2.0-23-generic, x86_64: installed vboxhost, 5.0.12, 4.2.0-22-generic, x86_64: installed vboxhost, 5.0.12, 4.2.0-23-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0416] (rev 06) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:05cc] NVIDIA Corporation GK106GLM [Quadro K2100M] [10de:11fc] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:15cc] InstallationDate: Installed on 2015-10-15 (90 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 15.10 "Wily Werewolf" - Alpha amd64 (20150924) MachineType: Dell Inc. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1533702] Re: Only 2 monitors detected via laptop docking station
JGJones, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product- support/product/precision-m4800-workstation/drivers/advanced an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A16). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible: 1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect): sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date 2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not. 3) Please mark this report Status New. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: bios-outdated-a16 ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1533702 Title: Only 2 monitors detected via laptop docking station Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Ubuntu 15.04 Linked to this bug - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1382462 Laptop is a Dell Precision M4800.
