This bug is still happening in both 12.04 and 12.10. Simple to reproduce. Use laptop with analogue built in Microphone. Plug in a USB Microphone and switch to it. When rebooting Ubuntu the analogue microphone is re-activated and NOT the last Microphone used which was the USB Microphone. In addition going to "Sound Settings" and clicking on Input will cause the Microphone to fall off the USB Microphone and onto the built in Analogue Microphone forcing the user to then reselect the USB Microphone.
