Title:
mic / speakers not working after update - 10.04LTS

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I have had an ongoing issue with sound after updates. I have sound
with external mic/speakers (headphones) but not to the built-in
mic/speakers on the laptop. I need the built-in mic/speakers for
  conferencing.

Prior to the most recent, there were 2 parts to Step 1 of the trouble
shooting documentation for 10.04 LTS. Most times the first part was
sufficient. In all cases before, executing the two was always
sufficient to restore sound. No longer. I am running 10.04LTS on an
HP g72 laptop; i3 processor; Windows was wiped and 10.04LTS is the
only OS on the system. I am including both the output of Step 1 and
Step 3 from the troubleshooting procedure below. What jumps out at me
is two things. First, the Driver version (1.0.21) does not match the
Library and Utilities versions (1.0.24.x). Second, there is no linux-
alsa-driver-modules version on my system matching my kernel release
  (2.6.32-40-generic). Please advise.
