The testers were not quite sure what happened after they tapped on the

We should display a message saying Selection copied to clipboard or

Bug description:
  From usability testing:
Testers expected the phone to provide a resent option or to automatically
resend the message when the singal is back if a message is not sent successfully

Testers received a 'no network' pop up, and the full text message
stayed in the compose bar. As a result, they had to constantly check
if the network is back, and then resend the message again. Phone is
often used on the move, and network issue can be a common issue when
such as on the train or around places where full of high buildings. It
is important to design for these retrictions.

  Proposed solution:
Until we have Save as draft support, I'd propose the following:
  - If we detect No Network or No SIM Card and the user presses Send, directly
add the message to the message thread, but mark it as failed (with the resend
icon visible)
  - Then pop up the dialog as we do today

This way, the message is part of the history and the user can resend whenever
is convenient without losing their message.
Also, eventually when we have auto resend these messages will be in the queue.

Contacts' view on the dialer does not have instruction for empty state, and
as a result, testers struggled to know how to import the contacts.

Some testers went to the dialer, wanting to sync the contacts so that
they could make a phone call. They clicked on the 'Contacts' icon, but
there was no empty state instruction, apart from an empty screen with
'+add a contact'. One of the tesers had to manually put the contacts
in. It took him three days to finally figure out how to sync the
  contacts.

As discussed, if the contact list is empty we should display a message
in the list with a button to setup Google account, similar to how it's
done in the address book app.

I use my phone to play music on random while I'm driving. This works
great except when I want to advance or pause the song, where I have to
go through the greeter first to access the player. This can either
take my attention away from driving or I need to wait until the next
stop light to advance the song. This is less of a concern when the
greeter can just be swiped with one gesture, but is a big concern if
you enable the passcode lock where you have to add the passcode to
  access the player.

If the music is playing, the greeter should allow rudimentary
manipulation of the music, eg, pause/play and forward/back. Other
platforms seem to allow for this (eg android).

This bug is related to this one https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-

the beep tone doesn't happen when the phone is in silent mode.

  Build: r143
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. switch your device on loud/turn up the sound
  2. call your device and hand up the phone you called from
  3. you hear a beep when the call is ended
  4. now put your device on silent
  5. call your device again and hang up

Expected result: you hear the beep
  Actual result: not a sound

The beep sound should be played in whatever output the call is performed,
internal, speaker, headphones, etc.
If user switches the output lets say from speaker to internal, the sound
should follow.

[design] [Dialogs] shutdown menu should show icons

Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Holding the physical power button displays the shutdown menu with
options to shutdown, restart or cancel. These buttons are colour-coded
but for added clarity I think we should add icons to represent the
  operations.

Note that if this menu is changed, there are other parts of the system
that also offer similar shutdown/restart menus (see bug 1377145) so
ideally they would also be modified (or even better they would make
use of the one true shutdown menu to avoid inconsistency).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1411323] Re: [address book] share handler screen has a confusing ok icon

2015-01-22 Thread Olga Kemmet
I agree with Selene. The X shouldn't be there at all for example. This is
related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ux/+bug/1373494
And design is currently looking at solutions replacing the confirmation tick
with something else.

First boot welcome wizard in location sections claims GPS is less accurate
than network based location service from HERE.
While this can be theoretically true in some insane corner case, in normal
life GPS is far more accurate.

To help form correct text here are main differences.

GPS - more accurate, but slow to acquire fix, does not work indoors,
drains battery more, no need for internet connection, does not send
  any data out.

Network based location - almost instant to get coarse location, works
indoors, accuracy depends on network coverage in the area, more power
efficient, requires internet connection. To get location data about
visible GSM network and wifi networks needs to be send to 3rd party
  server.

  tested on krillin vivid-proposed r107

+1 with Saviq, ideally we should detect the timezone via WiFi or GSM.
The initial wizard is not the correct place for this setting anyways. If
the time is set wrongly for whatever reason, users should be able to
amend it in system settings.

2015-01-27 Thread Olga Kemmet
This is a usability issue as well, especially for people who may rely on the

The response-ability has to be 100% correct.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1376240] Re: [dialer] pressing power button should silence incoming call

2015-01-23 Thread Olga Kemmet
I think this bug is only partially fixed. An incoming call is not
silenced by tapping the power button, however the screen goes dark first
and users don't know if the call continues ringing. Switching the
screen off gives the impression that the call was declined.

The desired solution is: press the power button and silence/mute call.
Second press: screen goes dark.

  2. try to put the active call on hold
  3. expected result - current call is placed on hold

be put on hold by tapping the icon in call controls

I've a feeling that tabs in a phone factor browser are a bit
shoehorned in, I'd actually be much happier having separate items in
the right-edge spread for the open websites instead of introducing a
second axis on which to switch between tabs.

I remember it was a desire to explode tabbed UIs in the Super+S
spread in Unity, but it was not possible technically. Maybe it could
  be made possible today?

Whether tabs would exist grouped in the same right-edge stack, or as
completely independent entities, remains to be investigated. Maybe
we'd explode the tabs on touch or pinch or something. I just can't see
the purpose of tabs if they're not readily available, which on a phone
form factor would be a waste of precious screen estate.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1358340] Re: [Indicators] Complete greeter profiles

2015-01-05 Thread Olga Kemmet
And the default for A should be off and the default for B should be on?
I would say yes, at least for the time being.
Maybe an easier overview of these settings for the user is needed.
[A] - always allow
[B] - restricted access
[C] - no access
They obviously will need better wording and some explanation to users what they
set. :)
The default would be [A]. And anything else can be set by the user. I feel that
currently it is rather confusing.

Title:
[Shell] Bring the HUD back to Unity 8

Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:
  New
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
One of the most innovative, useful, and wildly popular features
introduced into Unity 7 was the HUD. Unity 8 currently does not have
  it.

When Unity 8 was started, we had a way of accessing the HUD with a
long-swipe from the bottom edge. However, the API to use it was late
in being added to the SDK, and changed in incompatible ways after it
was available, and as a result only a few apps (including one of my
own) had taken advantage of it. Moreover user testing showed that the
swipe-up activation was not easily discover-able by users.

When the toolbar/header was redesigned and the bottom-edge gesture
given to app developers, the way of accessing the HUD was removed, and
the API was removed before the first supported API freeze.

Before switching to Unity 8 on the desktop we will need to re-
introduce the HUD into Unity, to avoid a feature regression that many
have come to expect and appreciate. Moreover, we should re-introduce
it on the phone so that apps can once again start taking advantage of
it, so we can learn how to provide new use cases and user interactions
  for phone/tablet apps.

In order to match, as much as possible, the Unity 7 way of accessing
the HUD, my recommendation would be to implement it like an Indicator,
but always on the far left of the panel. Then it would be touch-
accessible with a swipe down from the top, or switchable from within
the drop-down of another indicator, placing it at the same screen
position as it is on the Unity 7 desktop. Placing the window title or
simple Menu in that location of the panel (or switching between
them, depending on available space) would aid in discovery of the
  feature.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1372646] Re: Can't correct SMS number after entering it wrong once

2015-03-17 Thread Olga Kemmet
If it helps, this is how it works on the iPhone, sending a message to a
number with and without the country code (UK - Germany).

Both message appear as sent, I do not get any alert or notification that the
message without the country code was not delivered. The messages are not
grouped either.
However, the message without the country code never arrives...the one with the
country code does. That is not exactly a good UX so I think we can do something
better.

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce (example, I suspect more number combinations are
  possible to reproduce):

  * Using the bottom edge, write a new SMS to a foreign number which is not
stored to your address book, but omit the country code. Eg, 01791234567
  * Wait for the SMS delivery to fail.
  * Go back to the conversations list and use the bottom edge to start writing
a new SMS. enter the same number again, this time including the country code.
eg +491791234567
  * The second SMS will be grouped with the first one and the first SMS's
number will be used for the second SMS too causing all attempts to fail again.

This does not recover after clearing the conversation. dbus-monitor
always shows HistoryService bringing back the old wrong number. Also
the conversation's header will revert to the old number after exiting
  and re-entering the conversation.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1331346] Re: [address book] No access to contacts on SIM

2015-03-17 Thread Olga Kemmet
The long term plan is to include an import option into the Address Book app
settings. Design decided not to add an option in the header because in most
cases importing SIM contacts is going to be a one time operation.
I believe the interim plan is to include an icon in the landing view of the
app, as an individual list item. This item is removed once user did the import.
However, is this item always present or only if the device detects any contacts
on the inserted SIM card?

Title:
[indicators] [SIM PIN] No prompt to unlock sim after airplane mode

Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products:
  New
Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:
  Incomplete
Status in indicator-network package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  BQ phone:

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Turn airplane mode on
  2. Turn airplane mode off

  Desired effect:
You get a prompt to unlock your sim cards

  What I got:
You get no connection and no prompt. Only if you open the network panel,
you see that your sim is still locked.

You should get a prompt to unlock your sim after turning off airplane
mode. Otherwise the user does not know the sim card is still locked.
The fact that the sim card becomes locked after airplane mode is not
something you should have to think about as a user.

Bug description:
Use of Yes/No for confirmation (particularly on destructive actions, such
as deleting) is generally considered inadvisable:

Recommend switching language to use the verbs Confirm/Cancel (as
  seen when uninstalling applications).
