Re: [Tracker] [Announce] Tracker 0.6.4

2007-12-12 Thread Dinesh Dutt
Thanks for the tip. Using gstreamer was what was required.

It'd less confusing to an end user if tracker detected these missing
dependencies and stuck a warning. I saw in the output of configure that video
searching was enabled with xine, nothing about audio and since I was using
Beagle previously which didn't complain, I assumed that audio extraction was
enabled.

Also, when I forcibly selected the trackerapplet option, it'd have been
helpful if configure aborted with the missing dependency. I went through the
config.log and found out the dependency and installed it.

Things are working well now. I couldn't get tracker-0.6.3 to be useful. It
never returned me any search results after a while. This version is faring
better. Thanks for the software,

Dinesh

[Tracker] Tracker and other indexers coexisting

2007-12-12 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
Hi,

When I was merging Ubuntu's tracker from Debian's, I thought about the patch
which disables trackerd in KDE. I thought that shouldn't happen, as if a KDE
user installs tracker he will expect tracker to work out of the box.

I discussed it with Sebastien Bacher and he agreed with me that it wasn't
optimal. But he explained to me (and I agree with it) that there shouldn't be
more than one indexer running at the same time, so it's a workaround for [1].
But as Michael Biebl explains in [2] with his user case, this is not the best
thing to do. But we need to do something. You don't want to have tracker,
strigi, beagle... running at the same time.

So I was wondering whether the XESAM spec specifies some way to solve this, or
at least a way for indexers to say they are indexing. If the first is done, that
would be great. However if it isn't but the second option is implemented,
tracker could check whether there are other indexers running, and if so, stop
running.

What do you think about it?

Cheers,
Emilio

I guess XESAM will define a D-Bus API (similar to
org.freedesktop.PowerManagement)
and the first indexer that grabs this interface on startup will server requests.
Other indexers will simply exit if they notice that the interface is taken.

Cheers,

tracker already does that but with its own interface only (hence the

Dbus allows multiple apps to own the same dbus interface but you can pass a
flag to specify exclusive ownership and exit if it fails

When I forced tracker to index only the mp3 directory, it seems to work fine.
Without using the -i option, I've specified the mp3 directory as an
additional watched directory. Is that the problem ? I did see tracker spit
out some messages about working on some files in the mp3 folder when I
started trackerd without the -i option.
