[Trisquel-users] Trisquel present and future

2011-06-28 Thread davidegallo

Hi all,

what will the Triquel future be? It'll follow Ubuntu cleaning it from non
free software? What about Unity/Gnome 3? Why didn't Trisquel start from
Debian instead of Ubuntu?

Hello,

i posted this yesterday at the mailing list, but somehow it doesn't appear
there. Therefore I post it again at the web forum.

- in abrowser in the about:plugins site there is a link to
plugins.mozilla.org which contains non-free plugins.

- included seamonkey in Trisquel 4.5 seems to be unmodified with freedom
issues including recommending non-free software, see

http://libreplanet.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines#seamonkey

Henry

 non free software?

Trisquel removes nonfree software, adds more free software replacing it,
makes more usable default configuration.

 What about Unity/Gnome 3?

They have usability problems and require hardware 3d acceleration which
is not available for many users without nonfree software. Thus it won't
be default.

 Why didn't Trisquel start
 from Debian instead of Ubuntu?

Why should it start from Debian? gNewSense is based on Debian and
removing nonfree software isn't significantly easier there.

Will Gnome 3 be an option during install? My Intel graphics card is well
supported by the 3D free software drivers and can run Gnome 3 quite
well... Though reading this has made me worry about Gnome 3.

So are you saying that Trisquel will never have Gnome 3? Or free software
will be able to manage 3D effects in Gnome 3?

I don't see a problem with including it in repos and not installing it
by default. (I'm not a developer of Trisquel.)

 Or free
software will be able to manage 3D effects in Gnome 3?

I never used Gnome 3 (I use XFCE, now mostly on a machine without 3d
hardware). Intel and some Nvidia GPUs have working 3d effects in other
programs. Newer Nvidia GPUs need nonfree firmware for Nouveau, not yet
reverse engineered and all Radeons need nonfree firmware which AMD
doesn't want to free or document (it's related to Digital Restriction
Management in their hardware).

The choice of the next Trisquel's default desktop has already been discussed
in this thread: http://trisquel.info/fr/forum/which-desktop-next-trisquel

The next Trisquel will use Gnome 2.32 (like the last Ubuntu). Then, Trisquel
will use, by default, Gnome 3 but without Gnome Shell (because it requires a
rather recent OpenGL support that is unavailable, via Free drivers, for those
having ATI/AMD cards and unstable for those with a nVidia cards).

Notice however that the gnome-shell package already is Trisquel's
repositories (that of Slaine and that of Taranis).

I've been installing 4.5 on various computers throughout my apartment. The
system I haven't been successful with thus far is my HP Pavilion Elite 410-y
desktop. I was trying to use the 64-bit edition, because the system has 8 GB
of RAM. The problem is that I get an error indicating that no medium with a
live system could be found. Any suggestions?

Have you tried using the 32 bit edition? You should be able to utilize all
of your RAM with Physical Address Extension, which, as far as I know, should
be enabled by default if you have enough RAM to warrant its use.

I am opting to use the netinstall method instead. I have a couple of 64-bit
machines, and I prefer using 64-bit software whenever I can.
