Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
:( I think I missed it. Or maybe that was the meeting I was partly there for.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
Chris, check out the lastest developer meeting. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
:) Maybe I misread something although I thought it was suppose to happen last Friday? Putting out a date seems unwise when Rubén has said "it'll be ready when its ready" (or something like that).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 6 missed another deadline. Is this project dead?
I didn't mean to imply you were blaming Ruben. I meant to suggest that there are valid criticisms although the ones presented sounded like they were more down to bad choices or the lack of understanding on how things work. People get use to doing things a particular way and end up having trouble because they don't know the “right” way to work with something when they switch systems. Then when problems occur they attribute it to the wrong places/people/etc. But humorously there are a lot of real bugs. I'm just doubtful of at least some of the ones you mentioned because I know from experience whats solved some (maybe all?) of them for customers I've dealt with. Of course each system / person is different so I can't say for sure. You would have to try some of the suggestions to verify my educated (?) guesses.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
It depends how you interpret "but hasn't made the source code available" . Usually source code is available live-on-the-web or ftp and this is preferred, so people can download and examine it with no waiting. It is not a requirement of the GPL that source code be live, only obtainable. This means 'available on request'. If the author refuses a request to send a copy of the complete source code that is under the free licence or they are uncontactable, the program is no longer considered to be Free Software. This paragraph is from the wikipedia GPL page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_GPL#Copyleft Many distributors of GPL'ed programs bundle the source code with the executables. An alternative method of satisfying the copyleft is to provide a written offer to provide the source code on a physical medium (such as a CD) upon request. In practice, many GPL'ed programs are distributed over the Internet, and the source code is made available over FTP or HTTP. For Internet distribution, this complies with the license.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Source access
Have you ever tried to decompile a large binary? If you manage to understand a line of the results, you can consider you happy. Access to the source code is a precondition to an effective freedom to study/modify a program.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
Like I said, you will not look at the original code when you decompile. See http://stackoverflow.com/a/14266904 And there's a difference between the source code being available or undisclosed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
Think about it like this: wouldn't you rather have access to the original source code, than having to decompile it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fonts & Font rendering
Or "Advanced Settings" in System Settings by default on Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
It wouldn't be illegal if the program is under a free license.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
But I can always decompile it to get the source, so in a way you always have access to the source code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
Decompiling does not produce the original logic. You can disassemble a binary software with good results, but you can't decompile something to a higher level language. You will always lose original information, and this practice is almost always illegal.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel 6 missed another deadline. Is this project dead?
Interesting article here: http://www.iloveubuntu.net/canonicals-vice-president-engineering-rick-spencer-officially-proposes-adoption-rolling-release In short, Ubuntu may replace all STS releases by a single rolling release. LTS releases every two years would still exist. Keep in mind that this is only a proposal at this point. But the implications for the Trisquel project would be interesting to ponder.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access
/* A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms: - - * The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this. - - */ https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
[Trisquel-users] Source access
A program's author has released it under a permissive free license, but hasn't made the source code available. Does this mean it isn't free software?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Difficulty compiling from source
Forget it. I've installed Thunderbird via Add/Remove Applications.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
Thats good news. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
> When will it be official released & show up in the download page? That is supposed to happen on Friday March 1 or Saturday March 2 depending on what time zone you're in when it happens.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
When will it be official released & show up in the download page?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fonts & Font rendering
For those that are unaware, icarolongo is using Gnome Tweak Tool: http://packages.trisquel.info/toutatis/gnome-tweak-tool
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fonts & Font rendering
I changed for GNOME 3 default configuration.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I have no sound
it's not enough, it's still not working
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hibernate disabled by default on Trisquel 6
Apparently any data loss only happens if the machine does not wake up, so it's very easy to test whether hibernate can be enabled. Silly ubuntu...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot install any software
i have the same predicament and i can attest to what your feeling now. on my part, i have a printer that as a dual purpose as it's also a scanner. the issue arises when i change my OS and the OS is not supported by the installation disk. i did called the service center of the printer which also serve for their scanner. i was only told to downgrade or installed my previous OS if i want to work it out again. i really feel i'm cheated. they should not tell me what OS to use but let their software installation adopt to new hardware or systems. buying soundcloud plays
