Re: [Trisquel-users] Playing video freezes my netbook!
I suspect the issue is that, for whatever reason, you don't have hardware-accelerated graphics and at the same time your Atom processor is not fast enough to be able to decode these videos in real-time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Playing video freezes my netbook!
I should probably add that I'm not necessarily surprised at the lack of hardware acceleration because the free software community does not typically look to Nvidia for pro-freedom activities.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Playing video freezes my netbook!
I've read of trouble on systems with more than one GPU. Can you disable either in the BIOS setup?

[Trisquel-users] Thunderbird Crashes
Dear community, I am asking for some help in getting Thunderbird running well on my system. I am completely new to Trisquel (just removed Mac OS to install it.) But am having some problems with Thunderbird. Every time Thunderbird starts it seems to freeze within seconds. The entire system becomes sluggish (windows do not get drawn properly, menus open very slow etc). Eventually when I get to open System Monitor I can see that Thunderbird is using 1.2GB of the 2Gb available. Where do I start to fix this problem? I have already googled it, but can´t seem to find an answer. Thank you very much, Phillip

Re: [Trisquel-users] System Proxy Setting
My bad. Thanks dude. I found the proxy settings in gconf-editor but I can't seem to set them. When I set Abrowser to use system settings it says I'm not using tor. I've included a screenshot of what I set in gconf while logged in a root.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Thunderbird Crashes
Hello Phillip, first, please open a terminal and start thunderbird by typing: thunderbird in the terminal. Perhaps you can manage to see the messages appearing if you have a few seconds time as you wrote and post the output. It's possible that we can find the cause of the problem this way and probably fix it. Otherwise we can try out a slightly different version of thunderbird;
Re: [Trisquel-users] System Proxy Setting
gconf-editor is old from GNOME 2. Now GNOME 3 uses dconf-editor. Try this.

My question is although they talk a lot about privacy being an American company isn't there some uncertainty as to how much they would be required to hand over their XMPP logs? Some of the suggestions here are quite reasonable in advising to go with a company outside the US. If you're worried about the US government spying on you, you should definitely not use a service based in the US as they must comply with the US law. If the government issued a court order to DDG they have to hand over their data or fight for it (see what happened with Lavabit). You can still use encryption to protect your conversations from being read, but they will keep the logs until they have time and resources to decrypt them anyway. Unfortunately, there's little protection against that because you'd have to avoid completely to send you Internet traffic through the US. That said, a EU-based service plus encryption is possibly the best option to protect your privacy. Re: [Trisquel-users] Thunderbird Crashes
Thank you quantumgravity for the help! I have tried to start Thunderbird via the terminal. Unfortunately the terminal didn´t give any output before Thunderbird froze again. For what it is worth; the cursor stopped blinking right before Thunderbird froze. I was able to quit it by pressing CTRL and C. In the meantime I have been able to get my email working with Evolution, and the problem is not urgent in that way. But I am really interested in finding out what causes the freezing. What I have tried is: 1. sudo apt-get install --reinstall thunderbird 2. remove thunderbird via synaptics manager and reinstall via the package manager But both of the attempts didn´t solve the freezing. It seems to be a preference setting then? Or is it more likely to be a dependency? Thanks! Phillip
[Trisquel-users] Re : Thinkpad 41 and the size of ISO
Trisquel 4.0 does not receive any (desktop?) updates anymore. It is indeed based upon Ubuntu 10.04, whose support for the desktop ended in May. You should not use it. Especially if you worry about the security of your system. Today, only Trisquel 6.0 is supported.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Thinkpad 41 and the size of ISO
I think BlinkArrow was referring to the NetInstall. The rest of the operating system is to be installed through APT. If you want the default desktop, you simply have to run this command from the newly installed system:

Re: [Trisquel-users] Thunderbird Crashes
I think it's a bug which occurs only in very specific conditions (your system setup and hardware); I don't know what thunderbird doesn't like on your system and why. If you want to keep on using it you can search for a ppa with a more recent version; but please make sure that the ppa doesn't include non-free software. 1. sudo apt-get install --reinstall thunderbird 2. remove thunderbird via synaptics manager and reinstall via the package manager But both of the attempts didn´t solve the freezing. That's not very astonishing since both actions do the same and as far as I know, they let the settings and profile data of thunderbird untouched in your home folder. Better you try: sudo apt-get remove --purge thunderbird sudo apt-get install thunderbird. Or you can remove the .thunderbird folder in your home directory and try again. Perhaps your right and a preference setting causes the problem, but I think this is unlikely. More realistic is an addon makes trouble. Did you install any of them?
Re: [Trisquel-users] XMPP or SIP Account
Why don't you just setup your own xmpp server? I didn't try it myself yet, but I heard it's not very difficult. A cheap single-board computer should do the job; there are a few which can be used in freedom under *certain conditions*. Definitely the best thing for your privacy if you use free software OS and xmpp server. You're the only one you can trust.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Domain Name Registration
Pamela Jones of Groklaw (recently shuttered, similar response as lavabit) suggested kolab for email: https://mykolab.com/ Apparently it is hosted in Switzerland where there are strong privacy laws. With the nature of email though there really isn't any way to keep it truly private when the US UK (and a few others) have tapped major routes. There may be a few instances where your communications isn't as easily trappable between users of the same email provider hosted within Switzerland due to the email never leaving the network. However beyond those rare circumstances it is best to assume your privacy is non-existent as far as the government(s) are concerned.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Thunderbird Crashes
After purging and reinstalling t-bird, remove ~/.thunderbird; this will force a reset to defaults and with no addons enabled. Restart t-bird, and let us now what happens. I'm glad you have an alternative emailer to use until this gets fixed. I'm using the version of t-bird from the standard repository, with no addons; it works fine!

Re: [Trisquel-users] careful with PPA
Distributions like Ubuntu actually do review all packages that are submitted. So, if someone attempts to submit a package with the Hand of Thief trojan, ready to wreck havoc on unsuspecting users machines, they'll catch it and the submitted user will be reported. Where do the packages come from that make up the Trisquel repository?

[Trisquel-users] DVD Playback Problem: How Do I Configure the Buffer?
I've been watching DVDs using Trisquel a whole lot lately. I'm using Totem (and sometimes other players) to play them back, and I've noticed if I ever pause or rewind, my optical drive spins down and doesn't start back up again until playback reaches the end of the buffer. This causes playback to freeze for a few seconds, and then it jumps ahead a few seconds requiring me to rewind to catch what I missed. It doesn't make things unwatchable, but it results in not-very-good performance. Has anyone else run into this problem? Are there settings somewhere I can tweak to see if I can mitigate it?
[Trisquel-users] Replicant on Galaxy S2
My sister gave me her old Galaxy S2. I'd like to put Replicant on it. I downloaded the img files (list below) and installed Heimdall and its front-end. boot.img system.ext4.img recovery.img Replicant is not fully free on the Galaxy S2. Is it worth replacing Android? Replicant on S2 has the following problems. 1. Proprietary and likely signed bootloader 2. Modem, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC firmwares are non-free 3. Modem could access GPS It's a Virgin Mobile phone if that makes a difference. My sister got it in Toronto. I hope that this isn't too off topic. I'll understand if someone removes it. Replicant's forum doesn't seem active, so I thought I would ask here.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Want to remove triskel and synaptic package manager doesn't work
Take a look at this post.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Replicant on Galaxy S2
More free software is better than less. You probably use a proprietary BIOS or EFI and I am sure you still consider that Trisquel is better for your freedoms than Windows or Mac OS. You may find this FSFE campaign interesting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant on Galaxy S2
Yeah good point; the pre-installed Android has a lot of proprietary stuff in addition to those things that Replicant cannot avoid. I booted into the phone's Download Mode, just to see what it's like. I have four lines of text, followed by large green Android logo, followed by two more lines of text: ODIN MODE PRODUCT NAME: GT-i9100M CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL *android logo* Downloading... Do not turn off target!! I don't know what to do right now ... the instructions say this but I feel stuck: Prepare the phone 1. Turn the phone off, disconnect any USB cable 2. Hold the key combination for Download mode (release only when in Download mode) 3. You should be in Download mode. If not, remove the battery and retry the steps above 4. You might need to confirm that you want to download a custom OS 5. Once the Download screen is waiting, plug the USB cable http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/HeimdallRecoveryInstallation
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant on Galaxy S2
Oh -- never mind; I think that's how it's supposed to be. I just have to connect the USB and run Heimdall.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant on Galaxy S2
my recovery.img is here: mtp://[usb:001,008]/65537/28/recovery.img I'm not sure how to tell whether that's a kernel partition, or recovery partition, for Flashing step 1. I tried both commands in the terminal, and the phone did not reboot. I'm stuck =/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant on Galaxy S2
As far as WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC are concerned, you don't need to worry about nonfree firmware, because I'm pretty sure that firmware isn't included with Replicant. I use Replicant on my phone tracking device, and it does not have working WiFi, Bluetooth or NFS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Domain Name Registration
I use Mykolab and think it is one of the better public options out there. I'd rather pay $10/month and have some basis privacy along with no ads. But of course if the lines are tapped what can one do. But I also feel a philosophical need to not give my services to companies like google, etc. who willingly cooperate with the authorities with little or no opposition. Mykolab offers WebDav and will be offering XMPP accounts in the future. Their TOS also seems to be pretty good. The only thing I haven't seen is actual web hosting but you can use their email/kolab services with your own domain.
Re: [Trisquel-users] XMPP or SIP Account
Sure but what I was wondering is DDG even logs your chat. Email is one thing since it has to remain on a server if you are using IMAP or something similar. But chat's can be deleted as soon as you end the chat.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is free software the package libdcmtk2?
I agree with both points. Is there some specific issue that's bothering you?
Re: [Trisquel-users] DVD Playback Problem: How Do I Configure the Buffer?
Don't watch DVDs so don't have any experience. Maybe one could use hdparm as a workaround. But don't destroy your system with it! :)
