Yes.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Legal enforceability of licenses
I guess you could add it as MIT or BSD and explain in the text part. My interpretation of said license is it's free. Anything goes.
[Trisquel-users] Problem with Bitmessage installation
I followed the installation guide on Bitmessage wiki. https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Compiling_instructions I typed this command in Terminal git clone https://github.com/Bitmessage/PyBitmessage But I got this error. Somehow the computer failed to install Bitmessage. - Cloning into 'PyBitmessage'... git-remote-https: relocation error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgnutls.so.26: symbol gcry_cipher_setkey, version GCRYPT_1.2 not defined in file libgcrypt.so.11 with link time reference -- I have libgcrypt11 installed in Synaptic Package Manager. Its version is 1.5.0-3ubuntu0.2. I believe git is working fine. Can anybody please help me?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 6.0.1 Ready For Testing
Hi, So what currently is the story with Trisquel 6.0.1? Can one upgrade from 6.0? Is there much difference between 6.0 and 6.0.1? Cheers, Steve

Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
It has a full Office suite installed, usable on first boot. No need to go looking for one or worse, paying for MSOffice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] “badBIOS,” malware that jumps airgaps
Yes, that is one article I came across as well. The author is too confident and is a lone voice at this point. I doubt there is 100% truth or lies to be found. There is a lot of uncomfortable stuff being revealed and some will pick at it with interest, others will dismiss it with disbelief. Whatever actually happened, continues to exist. I never posted the link wanting anyone to worry. The WTF aspect was interesting. These types of articles affect what I think/see/know about computers and man, my views have been changing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
You can use GNOME Shell.

A surprising revelation... On this[0] page, it says the add-on is derived from bitcoin-prices, another Firefox add-on. On the Github page of bitcoin-prices,[1] the license is GPL v3. Re: [Trisquel-users] 6.0.1 Ready For Testing
What's different about the isos that have fsf in the file name?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 6.0.1 Ready For Testing
More included apps, special FSF page on startup, and, maybe, different art work?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 6.0.1 Ready For Testing
Hi again, Thanks very much Dave. Good to know as I like to help out and test Trisquel any way I can. Also according to Andrew above, one can still upgrade from 6.0 by typing the following into a terminal: 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade' Is this still true? As far as I know FSF versions of the iso files are the isos given out at free software foundation events and sometimes at Windows 8 promotional events to guide people in the direction of freedom! :-) Only difference is some extra software I think but I would go with the normal iso as I was unable to log in to the FSF iso when I tried it when 6.0 came out. Steve
Re: [Trisquel-users] Legal enforceability of licenses
its probabaly the same as WTFPL which is fsf approved, but not osi approved.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to Change Default Main Menu In Trisquel6?
@Dave_Hunt: alacarte is the software behind Main Menu. @Milandini: It seems that there is a huge misunderstanding. Alacarte (Main Menu) is a menu editor which can be used for editing menu entries but GnoMenu is intended for replacing the menu itself.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
I think it's mostly things that windows 7 HAS and trisquel does not. Such as DRM. I once tried to transfer a file from a computer to a external hdd. Windows did not let me, because the file had microsoft DRM. Trisquel is faster, easier to install, you can change gui a lot more easily.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with Bitmessage installation
First make sure that you have all the dependencies by typing this command in the terminal: sudo apt-get install python openssl git python-qt4 Now, type this command all on one line: git clone https://github.com/Bitmessage/PyBitmessage ~/PyBitmessage (~/ is shorthand for your home folder) Run it by entering this command: ~/PyBitmessage/src/bitmessagemain.py

Does Trisquel have a built-in utility that will allow me to use the arrow keys to move the cursor? If not, is such a utility available as free software?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Removing Trisquel in windows problem
Tell me about your degree in computers. You have one, yet you are unable to do something as basic as installing gnu/linux. I have no computer degree, and I can use trisquel fine. I started using ubuntu in 2011, and earlier this year changed to using free software only. If you have issues with WIFI disconnecting, either use an external one, or install the non-free driver, if there is one. I use a PCMCIA wireless card in my laptop. It really does not take long to download the non-free driver. Clearly, if it is disconnecting on windows as well, its a problem with the wireless card, not the driver. Please do not blame your broken hardware on the linux kernel developers. Its not their fault. Secondly, GNU/Linux is easy to use. If a beginner got a computer, it came with trisquel, he could just enter his wifi password and immedietly start using the internet. It will have the office programs installed - libreoffice, and whatever.

[Trisquel-users] Accountancy free softwares ?
Hello everybody, I don't know a lot about accountancy but I will probably learn the grounds of it, or more. I would like to know which free software we can use for accountancy, with Trisquel 6.0 . I ask this question because I know that... probably, if I learn accountancy in a society or in a school, probably - and unfortunately ! - they will use proprietary softwares. Because I will probably have to use the same softwares as them, I will have to learn it and install it on a laptop (with Windows, not with Trisquel ; okay, I know that Windows and Mac are evil). My idea is to learn accountancy both with proprietary software(s) - because I can't force society to use only free software - and free software - because, you know, I want to stay free, like us. At once, I wonder about compatibility of files formats. What are open format for accountancy files ? What are closed format for accountancy ? Will there be compatibility problems ? (like sometimes between odt and doc, between LibreOffice and Microsoft Office) Thank you in advance for your answers. I don't know : are there many differences between accountancy in Switzerland - where I live - and accountancy in France, in the United States, in England, etc. ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to Change Default Main Menu In Trisquel6?
You can modify the Panel with Super+Alt+Right-Click on it. If you do that just to the left of the Notification Area the menu that pops up will include Add To Panel as would have been used to add Gnomenu to Gnome 2. Wether it will work if Gnomenu is still built for Gnome 2 I don't know.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard
All the laptop keyboards I've seen remap some of the keys as the numeric pad on pressing a Fn+/something/ sequence. Look for small numbers around the UIOP JKL; and M,./ keys. The /something/ key will say something like NumLk or have a mini numeric pad logo on it in the same color as the Fn key legend. The function is local to the keyboard controller chip that's why it isn't documented in the Gnome help. If you do have a really, really, weird latop keyboard without this function then it is possible to modify the keyboard mapping to produce the right codes for a key combination of your own choosing. When I last did that I started with the xmodmap man page and used xev to work out the keycodes I needed to remap. I recommend you start there. As I have a UK keyboard and you have a .ca email address it's almost certain I can't help you more with that myself.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
Better package management.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
Trisquel can do things with freedom. The best way is migrate from proprietary applications to free as in freedom applications. After this everybody can use Trisquel without problems. Install in your Windows: Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, VLC, Jitsi, Deluge(or qbittorrent), GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Blender, Audacity, etc (you can search others here in Trisquel website (also in the distribution, of course) or in the Free Software Directory). After this step you can install the default Trisquel (GNOME Panel+Compiz) or with GNOME Shell or KDE or XFCE. Or try Trisquel Mini with LXDE. And try to move out people from Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, Skype, Flickr, YouTube and move to Diaspora, pump.io, XMPP and GNU MediaGoblin.

What are xmodmap and xev and how do I use them? And exactly which members of the forum can see my email address?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard
Gah. My email address contains my real name, which I don't want online. Why does this forum even require it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Substitute fonts
I believe those fonts are included in Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
From an ethical perspective, I'm not sure it's right to say good things about proprietary software, whether or not those things are true. I fail to see how what you've said can benefit us in any way.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
You seem to have forgotten that proprietary software can be functional and user-friendly, too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
If you find design flaws in free software, then it can be improved.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
At this point, it can't. It would require an overhaul of the entire system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
1) Trisquel Doesn't spy on you; Windows 7 does. 2) Trisquel let's you run unix applications; Windows 7 has non-free cygwin but it's just not the same. 3) Trisquel let's you recover a Windows PC from a LiveCD; Windows 7 doesn't have a LiveCD officially and BartPE imo doesn't do as good of a job. 4) Trisquel let's you easily host your own servers; Windows 7 after disabling multiple firewalls and UAC settings let's you do the same but is likely more vunerable to malicious attackers. 5) Trisquel is open-source so you can modify whatever you want; Windows 7 is a buggy black box. Yes, it's not as user-friendly as some Windows 7 features and hardware support, but with tweaking and continued bugs filed against the right packages it is my hope it one day will be. :)

On Windows you can install things easily without an Internet connection because of those dependencies. On Windows you don't depend on your distro's repositories being kept up-to-date. I maintain that Windows has better software management. I don't entirely agree. Each program on Windows provides its own updating capabilities. On a typical Windows system you will see notifications for Adobe and Java updates along with Windows updates, and in the background there are updates for Google and Mozilla software. Recent games on Windows also update regularly. I don't believe the part about internet connections, as many software updaters on Windows assume you have an internet connection. Another point on internet connectivity is that many users have some form of access to the internet, even if that means going to a library, internet cafe with WiFi or the local university. Package management on Windows doesn't manage dependencies, which is why installers for Windows include all dependencies and are sometimes quite big. Broken packages aren't that common on GNU/Linux distros. I personally haven't had any packages break on me. I recall there being an issue related to installing Epiphany in Trisquel a while back, and also issues with the abrowser/firefox package dependencies. But these typically cause issues in non-standard installations. Andrew.

Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
Windows doesn't have a package management system. Only system-level updates are delivered by Microsoft themselves. Other than that, it only has a standard for decentralized production of installers; it's up to software developers to make these installers, figure out how to include dependencies, provide an update mechanism, etc. Many developers don't even bother with this, and just package a binary in an archive and tell Windows users, extract and run. The only reason it arguably works better than the centralized package system Trisquel uses is because Windows is very popular, so much so that software developers feel obligated to provide something easy for Windows users, and sharing dependencies that aren't in every base system is so impractical that each program just comes with its own copy of every dependency.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Accountancy free softwares ?
The Software Freedom Conservancy has a campaign to raise money for the development of accounting software so aparently there is something lacking at the moment. They later announced [1] that they were hiring someone. Later on the announcement [2] came that it would be Joar Wandborg. It might be a good idea to keep in touch with them and share with them things that need improving in the world of free accounting software. Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
Oh, gosh, no. On Windows there's no such thing as a broken package... Let W$ = Windows Let M$ = Microsoft On the contrary on a W$ system just about every package is broken. Firstly, with native code programs other than the function bundled with bare W$ itself very little code is shared between apps, the technical details of how DLLs don't version prevents this. So when you install a W$ app you install a separate copy of common program parts for every program and these have to be loaded separately for each program. Thus you use a lot of disk and memory you don't need to, which is broken software packaging. Trisquel programs are much better at sharing code and there is more function in the shared code. The result is you can do more at one time with a computer running Trisquel than you could if it were running W$. Secondly, with Trisquel probably all your app needs will be met from the repo. So you have one update program, which reminds you once or twice a week when there are updates, you install them when it suits you. W$ programs typically check individually, phoning home every time they're loaded and if there are updates they attempt to maintain themselves there and then. Thus interrupting your train of thought and workflow precisely when you don't need it. Those once a month tasks your boss sets you, which you have to use other than your usual tools for, each become additional software maintenance sessions. This W$ behaviour is a broken approach to delivering packages. Thirdly you're forgetting all the software that stops working properly or at all when maintenance, particularly a new Service Pack has been applied. If dependencies are broken and you can still install these are the sort of things that happen. So a percentage are properly the consequence of not packaging properly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Virtualization article in trisquel wiki
Thank you very much for this. As VirtualBox isn't working anymore with Trisquel, this was badly needed.
