Re: [Trisquel-users] proper/practical use of tor

2014-01-17 Thread shiretoko

So you have JS still disabled though tor browser has it enabled by default?
I don't really know what's the right thing to do here.

At the moment I really do a lot of reading on tor and start to use tor
browser for my every day browsing, but I'm still a bit skeptical about it
(like about any new technology I'm using).
Somehow I'm a bit afraid that I may get accused for something someone else
did due to a technical phenomenon, since tor is certainly used by a lot of
criminals.
But with the information I found at the moment this seems to be impossible to
me.
I made sure that I'm not running a server by enabling client only mode in
torrc and hope things will work out this way. Unfortunately I can't even
contribute to the tor project by running an not-exit relay because my isp
(it's basically the university) forbids to run any kind of server.

About archive.org... it sure is a great platform, no doubt about that, but it
could be a bit more easy to browse. I'm having a hard time finding good stuff
though it's certainly there.
Mediagoblin sounds very promising, but we both know that they are in an early
level and have some problems. I don't understand why they don't implement a
search feature. With this, we could start using it like youtube.

Unfortunately, not every video on youtube is playable with html5 or more
specific: with html5 and the webm format.

Maybe things will change in the future.

Beside of this, I'm really surprised how fast the browsing with tor is. They
improved in this point.

And I'm ready to make some sacrifices since I'm really pissed off ab out
everyone knowing what I'm doing online.
It's none of their business.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.
I think the webrtc experiment is the most promising solution I heard of by
now.
It's a bit confusing since there is a project with a similar name (I think
its website is webrtc.com or something like this) which gets developed by
google, mozilla and opera. I checked the license file of this project and it
seems to be non-free, in contrast to the webrtc experiment which has a proper
MIT license.

I will check it out in a few weeks.
Any further comments are appreciated.

Sorry, that's ridiculous. They're using this service in order to talk to me.
The worst thing I could do to them is recording everything they say during

I executed this command before posting to this forum and was prompted to

Thanks in advance.

That's not SaaSS. Talking to someone else remotely is not computing you can
do on your own computer.

A JavaScript client isn't SaaSS, either. JavaScript isn't run remotely; it
gets installed into the browser executed on your computer. That the
installation and execution is silent and automatic is a problem, but it's not
SaaSS.

Hallo quantumgravity,
There are dozens of websites related to WebRTC but they are pretty much all
dealing with the same technology. [1]

AFAIK WebRTC is completely free.
I remember seeing a website recently with Call me buttons for Google,
Twitter, etc... but I can't find it anymore unfortunately.
Maybe this [2] goes in the right direction, though I'm not sure if this is
really free.

[Trisquel-users] what is the best trisquel laptop for my purposes?

2014-01-17 Thread mcconnau
I work most of the time in text terminals, with an editor session (nano) in
one and my lab control program, experix, in another, and I switch back and
forth with the alt-F# keys. So that switching has to be efficient and
reliable, and I want the machine to boot up in text mode. experix uses the
frame-buffer device to do its graphics, via a program that I wrote by
deconstructing and adapting SVGAlib.
Will this all be compatible with the Trisquel laptop, and assuming it is,
which Linux distribution should I select?

Re: [Trisquel-users] what is the best trisquel laptop for my purposes?

What laptop are you talking about? A few different laptops I can think of are
shipped with Trisquel.

In any case, you can set up a Trisquel installation however you want with net
install, including making it text-mode by default. Since Trisquel includes no
non-free blobs, any other GNU/Linux OS with a sufficiently recent kernel
version will work on a computer Trisquel works on.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The NSA and the likes do use radio waves to get inside someone's computer, through the use of spy hardware

2014-01-17 Thread gnuser
I agree with Fernando that there are many many attacks that can be performed
against a computer (or any electrical device for that matter).
I also agree with Anon in the sense that if we start focusing on that, we
better starting wearing tin foil hats and pants and shirts. We end up losing
our minds, go crazy thinking about that. That is also not a good thing to
happen.
If I might say something... and it's nothing more than my own opinion...
First, thanks Fernando for disclosing that info for us, it really helps to
know these things and you give us sources to investigate and decide by
ourselves if it makes sense or if is something out of context with no
connection to our own lives. And what you say in the end freeing computer in
terms of software is not enough, is also a good good good quote, and it sums
up many problems in today's world. However, we should consider how probable
is it that I will get to be a target, and how much am I willing to sacrifice
of my day to day usual life in order to prevent that from happening?. I can
say that I don't live in the USA so I don't have to deal with the NSA thing
as closely as you guys. Of course not being an american means I can get shoot
by a drone at any time :P though luck. Truth is, I know WHY I decided to
protect my communications and privacy (both online and offline). I remember
the event that lead to me changing my way of looking at life in terms of
privacy vs exposition. And because of that I can say that I know what I am
trying to achieve and what I am willing to sacrifice in order to achieve it.
If we were to start going crazy about the NSA capabilities, we would move to
East and one day China would be doing the same and we would move to the North
Pole and then the penguins would start spying on us and we would simply
realize that we should seek mental treatment :P
What I mean is, we can make spying/privacy-invasion harder for the agencies
that want to do it. And we should. And we should continue to improve stuff
like Tor and I2P and decentralized services and networks and free software
that respects the user, etc etc, BUT we should put living our lives as free
men above the fight to one day achieve total freedom. Because we might end up
losing our lives fighting for somehting that we might not even like when we
get there.
Having said that, I think what is a good thing to keep from your Post
Fernando, is that freeing computer from software is not enough, we should
pay attention to hardware as well. For me that means Open Source Hardware
should be as important to the world as free software is, and we should maybe
focus a little bit more on that.

Sorry for the long post, but it was just some thoughts and feelings I had at
looking at your posts guys. Thanks :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] proper/practical use of tor

2014-01-17 Thread gnuser

I didn't say that I have JS disabled ;)
What I said was i tried html5 player without JS and it works ;)
To your question, there is no perfect answer. Should JS be disabled or
enabled by default?
Tor Browser Bundle is a tool that millions of people use, and most of them
need for it to be as simple as download, open, run. Most people wouldn't
use Tor if they had JS disabled by default because many people don't even
know what JS is. So, instead of disabling JS entirely, the Tor Team made some
modifications to the browser so that it is safer even running JS.
Now, of course, given what we know about JS and the attacks recently used
against Tor (hidden services, network, browsers, etc) we should use it
disabled. Being users who are at power user level we can manage to have
temporary JS allowed in a certain site we need and set everything back to
normal after that. It is safer and I sometimes use JS disabled. But I don't
think it would be the right choice for Tor Browser Bundle default.
Your fears are a little bit unwise. If I am correct you are from france, and
france has a large community of Tor users. You will hardly have problems with
using Tor. Running a relay is something different and can't really give you
advice on that.

You can use startpage to search media gobblin. Like this
SEARCHITEM site:SITETOSEARCH
an example is rms site:gobblin.se
yes, it should be already implemented in Gobblin, given that they can even
use startpage for it :P
Tor is faster yes, a lot than it was 10 years ago. However, it is not mainly
because Tor has improved. Of course, they did improved they way circuits are
handled and they encryption has been strengthen as well, but speed is better
now because we have communities like torservers.net who have been keeping
high speed exit relays running 24/7. 10 years ago we didn't had any of that
so, it is really a matter of having enough high speed relays from trusted
sources so that the network is fast to handle the use we give it.

Remember: fight to live, don't live to fight ;) If you start making too many
sacrifices, one day you will not be using a computer anymore because it
might not be safe. See Fernando last post and my reply there to get what I
mean. we should improve the tools we have to be safe and we should use them
wisely, but we should not stop living our lives because of the NSA or someone
else.

[Trisquel-users] easy-to-follow Postfix guide?

I'm having trouble with Ubuntu's Postfix guide.

dix mx yourdomain.com didn't work; I tried installing dnsutils but that
didn't seem to help.

telnet localhost 25 gives me this response:

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^] '
220 trisquel ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu)

I'm not sure what the output means. That escape character doesn't help me
get back to muhammed@trisquel, so I get stuck at this step.

I tried the sendmail command. I wanted to email fmaster@localhost like
in the guide. It didn't work unfortunately.

It's probably me and not the guide. But I thought I'd ask for some advice.
Is there an easier way to make postfix work?
