Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver

2014-02-08 Thread mikko . viinamaki
I'm using a hp Pavilion dv5 and the wifi works (mostly, sometimes it drops
the connection...) without non-free software. My wifi is Broadcom Corporation
BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02).

I think this machine is so old (something like 2005 or 2006) it does not have
those restrictions. I'm interested in hearing how it goes if you do get
another wifi card.

Ok, perhaps I should take this situation as an oportunity and inform you and
h-node after I try it.

I'm a little scared, fortunately It seems Thinkpenguin lets you return the
device if your machine does have digital handcuffs.

[Trisquel-users] Question about book Linux Driver Development (3rd edition)?

2014-02-08 Thread longsong

I have learned the book Advanced Linux Programming.
http://www.advancedlinuxprogramming.com/

I don't know whether I am able to learn the book Linux Driver Development
(3rd edition).

https://lwn.net/Kernel/LDD3/

Is the book too difficult for me? Do I need to learn some other book first?
If so, which book should I learn first?

Thanks!

You also might want to check out Greg Kroah-Hartman's book, Linux Kernel
in a Nutshell:

It will explain some of the basics required.

Now that there is software rendering available, there's no real reason not to
use Gnome 3 Shell.

[Trisquel-users] Is it possible to strip down KDE to the kde-standard package?

2014-02-08 Thread hellocomputer8
I've been installing KDE packages, and i'm running out of disk space on my
root (/) partition. I've made a pastebin with my currently installed packages
here: http://pastebin.com/WTsPF4eR . I don't want to remove all of KDE and
install kde-standard but I want to remove all parts of KDE that are not in
kde-standard. Is this possible and if it is, how?

I don't mind the change, but I might miss the classic taskbar. I really like
it after increasing the system text size.

Thanks for the news Jason!

Just watch out for blobs!

'caca-view' opens any image as a colored ascii-art, Just install the package
named caca-utils (in Trisquel's repositories).

For no colors, take a look at libaa-bin.

2014-02-08 Thread magicbanana

Start by cleaning the packages:
$ sudo apt-get clean

Then search (e.g., linux- from Synaptic) and remove the older kernels (you
only need the latest one.

If still more space is to be saved, you can observe what takes space by
running the Disk Usage Analyzer (I translate from French; you can
alternatively fire baobab in the command prompt). It is part of Trisquel's
default install.

However, the only long-term solution is to enlarge the root partition. If you
chose Trisquel's default install, /home is on a separate XFS partition... and
it cannot be shrunk. That complicates the process a great deal: you need to
back-up /home, remove it, extend the root partition, recreate the partition
for /home and move back there the files you backed-up.

I don't think there is anything easier for getting started with device driver
programming except maybe Essential Linux Device Drivers published by Prentice
Hall, but it isn't free. This book has more-complete examples included, and
also has more information about user space device drivers. On the other hand,
the LDD3 book is better for learning the basics of writing kernel code.

It is easier to start with user space device drivers because you can use
ordinary library functions in your code, and because the device driver
library probably includes some complete examples already.
