Ok, this looks way better than the original lxde. I mean, why using a color-gradient for the bottom bar which makes it look like a 3-dimensional cylinder while all the icons look 2-dimensional? What were they thinking??

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is Clear Sans a true free/libre font?
Yeah, but thankfully there are other free fonts that work well for the UI. I use Roboto (apt-get install fonts-roboto in Trisquel 7) for the default and window title fonts in Trisquel and Ubuntu.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
Hello and thank you for telling us about the project. But, sadly, there is a problem with it: it requires you to use a google accont which I find counter-productive. If there is an alternative to using google, pleas tell. Thank you

Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
It doesn't seem to have any advantage over Tor, unless it's faster, maybe. Isn't access with anonymity better than just access?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
A number of red flags popped out to me, aside from the dependency on Google services (which they claim they will remove soon[1]) Readme[2] claims that it requires Oracle JDK specifically, and OpenJDK will not work. As is typical, they don't explain why this is the case. Now, I know Java people want everyone to use Oracle JDK as a matter of habit, so maybe it will work with OpenJDK and they just never bothered to test it. Readme also states that the installer is built with proprietary tools. This isn't a problem if you build it from source. It may or may not depend on Chrome (apparently they removed this in a later version) or it may or may not bundle a Chromium based UI (which is not apparent). The project also specifically targets Ubuntu Linux instead of GNU/Linux in general, which shouldn't cause problems but is a red flag for me in general. Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
I agree with you
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
I don't consider saying Linux when they mean GNU/Linux to be a red flag in particular; such projects include GNOME, LibreOffice, Python, and Tor. I don't consider any of these projects to be hostile to free/libre software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 Keyboard indicator.
I've searched for problems with the keyboard-indicator and shortcut and found several threads and bug reports from late 2013. Does this mean it is still a bug? Is it upstream? How do I report it? It's difficult to believe that I'm the only user affected by this. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

No, it's BusyBox, that's what it says, at least. I have neither sudo nor apt-get installed. Apparently, it's only the built-in commands that are available. Is there a way to recover this installation?.

A Trisquel system without apt-get?! That is weird! Personally, I would forget about this install and go with http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/trisquel-mini_7.0-20140807_amd64.iso (since you seem to want a lightweight desktop system).

How come that in the Trisquel users it indicates that a new post was made here by steve002 but I can't find that here???
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
Readme also states that the installer is built with proprietary tools. Normally, we don't even know whether the binaries on our system are really made of the correct sources or not. Thousands of free software project may also use proprietary tools for compiling but don't state it explicitly in the readme file. Don't know if that's really a sensible consideration.

I don't post much on forums, and I'm not such a technically competent person. Thank you for the guidance. You are a very good student! It is a pleasure to help you. In Spanish I remembered Como hacer preguntas inteligentes. So I messed up the name. The one you found is exactly the one you found. Congratulations. You have applied some of the principles in that article already. :-) As to your questions: Gnome 3.8.4 I have installed Trisquel 7 in two computers and can confirm that neither of them have a keyboard layout indicator and I cannot switch keyboards with shortcuts (tried setting several different shortcuts): 1) Macbook Pro 2011. 2) emachines e720. - The keyboard layout indicator used to appear automatically when adding more than one layout on Trisquel 6. This is not the case with Trisquel 7 (tested on two different installs with new accounts created). - I have tried adding the indicator applet and the indicator applet complete. Neither of them include the keyboard layout indicator. - I tried adding a notification area applet. This (visibly) does absolutely nothing. Perhaps the problem is here? - I have looked through all other applet options (in the task bar add to panel + option) but there are no others related to the keyboard as far as I can tell. Available options are: * Invest * Keyboard Accessibility Status * Lock Screen * Log Out * Main Menu * Menu Bar * Notification Area * Null applet * Power Off * Run Application * Search for Files... * Separator * Show Desktop * Sticky Notes * System Monitor * Trash * User menu * Window List * Window Selector * Workspace Switcher - I tried installing a package named xkb thinking it would provide a different indicator, but it did not. - I have checked in Synaptic Package Manager, and the following packages related to keyboard indicator are installed: 1) indicator-keyboard version 0.0.0+14.04.20140410.1-0ubuntu1 2) gkrellm-xkb version 1.05-5 - I have looked at system settings keyboard and there is no option for the indicator. - I have looked at system settings Region and Lanugage Input Sources, but there is no option to turn the keyboard indicator on. Looking through forums I have seen a screencap of ubuntu Input Sources settings. It looks very similar to the one in Trisquel, but it has an option to tick for showing the keyboard indicator (at the bottom of the screen). - I have looked through the System Settings Tweak Tool. The only option I found that could be related was in the Keyboard and Mouse section. I enabled the option called Show all Input Sources. Nothing visibly changed. - For the shortcuts I tried several different ones in: All Settings Keyboard Shortcuts. None switched the keyboard layout. I have also tried setting a shortcut through the Tweak Tool Typing Switching to Another Layout option. This didn't work either. - I have found several threads in other forums talking about a bug in Gnome 3.8.x wherein the keyboard indicator is absent. These all range between May and Dec. 2013. This is one such thread https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1184564. None of the threads had any clear solutions. The one I pasted mentions adding a Gnome 3 Staging PPA, but the launchpad link states: -- === *WARNING* === The packages here have been deemed not ready for general use, they have known bugs and/or regressions, sometimes of a critical nature. Mostly things should run smoothly but be prepared to use ppa-purge, when you encounter issues! If they break your system, you get to keep both halves. -- So I have not tested this solution. It is risky for your freedom to use repositories that do not test for your freedom. If you are just playing and will reinstall the OS or know how to remove everything, then go ahead and test. Did you try this? Open System Settings and click Region Language Switch to the Layout tab. Click the + button to add additional keyboard layouts (from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1045914/comments/49 ) Does this problem happen in the live CD? Take not of the exact steps you take to reproduce the problem. [Trisquel-users] Request for WLAN-card support
hi together, I would like to switch to Trisquel and tested it also out already with a Live-system. There I found out, that my WLAN-card and my Ethernet-card are not supported, although they run with Ubuntu and ubuntu-based distros since years already. I have run it from Ubuntu 8.10 until Ubuntu 13, then switched over to LinuxMint 9 Isadora. There I went to to LinuxMint 15. Then I switched away to Ubunt-Pack (ucrainian ubuntu-based distro) as this distro inuxMint will only get fresh sources every two years from now on. But I would really like to come to Trisquel, because I first test went quite well so far, although I found out, that your distro does not support my Wifi-card and my ethernet-card. Here some Information, which might be important for the administrators here: Wifi-card: 02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01) Ethernet-card: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 05) So my question would be: can these both please be supported for your upcomeing release of Trisquel 7?? Is there a possibility?? This would help a lot and make switching more easy for me. Thanks for all support in advance.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Lantern - An app to end censorship
The red flag is more that they target only Ubuntu, instead of GNU/Linux in general. That may or may not be a problem in practice, however.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fighting surveillance with GnuPG encryption (from FSF)
Trisquel has its own version of Firefox called abrowser which is completely free and uses Trisquel's own free addons service, as opposed to Mozilla's which offers non-free software. In Trisquel 7 this is being replaced with GNU IceCat.

Hello. I'm trying to install Trisquel in a virtualized environment from the “mini” CD image. Is there a way to use the text mode installer (As from the net installer)?. I find the graphical one unfamiliar and seem to be missing some features that I need (Like LVM settings). Regards and thanks in advance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 official release?
That's not an easy thing to do and requires writing a replacement for the nonfree firmware. There is only one project so far that has reverse engineered WiFi firmware (OpenFWWF for some Broadcom chips). If someone releases a libre replacement firmware for your Realtek chip, you'll be able to install it. Meanwhile, you can get a USB adapter with libre firmware from ThinkPenguin or Tehnoetic.

Ah, I get what you mean. But it doesn't really seem like that's what they're saying; they have a link that says Linux and links to a deb file. It looks more like they don't understand that not all GNU/Linux distros are Debian-based.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 Keyboard indicator.
Thank you for your guidance and encouragement Quiliro! I will start reading the book tonight. In the meantime: Steps taken to reproduce the problem: 1) Boot Trisquel 7 live CD. 2) Go to System Settings Region Language Input Sources tab. 3) Click on + button on lower left side of screen and add a keyboard layout. 4) Add another keyboard layout (i.e. Must have at least two keyboard layouts). 5) Nothing happens; the keyboard indicator does not appear on the task bar. Also: 6) In Input Sources tab, click on Shortcut Settings link. Set a shortcut or use existing one. 7) Open LibreOffice Writer test keyboard layout. Use assigned shortcut for next or previous source (from shortcut settings). Keyboard layout does not change. If the same steps are taken on a Trisquel 6 Live CD (add new keyboard through System Settings Keyboard Layout tab), the keyboard indicator automatically appears on task bar after adding a second keyboard. --- a) Re. PPA: I would rather not add any PPA that might contain non-free software. Even if only temporarily. b) I tried adding keyboard layouts as explained above, but it did not work. Thank you again. I hope my question asking will improve soon :) Saludos libres, fbit
[Trisquel-users] Rose Crypt
Rose Crypt provides users with a simplistic application that can be used for encrypting files in your computer using a custom passphrase. With its minimal design, Rose Crypt can be used by both advanced and beginner users. Once the encryption process is finished, you can access the newly created file from the location you previously selected. Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/rosecrypt/files/rosecrypt1.2/gnu%20linux/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rose Crypt
Do you know if there is a white paper on which crypto is applied and how? The available information seems to be minimal. Which libraries are used, which algorithms? How about peer reviews? In general, I would be cautious about using any new crypto software which has not been peer reviewed and stood some sort of test in time. I could not find much information via web search either.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Request for WLAN-card support
The Trisquel project only distributes free (as in freedom) software. At the kernel-level, where the drivers and firmware are, that means using Linux-libre. Ubuntu's kernels include proprietary drivers and firmware. Apparently, both your network devices cannot be used in freedom. As for the Ethernet card, you really are unlucky: Linux-libre handles almost all Ethernet cards. As for Wifi cards, most chipsets now depend on proprietary firmware and it is not easy to pick a card that works: https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/tehnoetic-wireless-usb-adapter-awarded-fsfs-ryf-certificate#comment-55244 Anyway, acquiring such a device is what you need to have the whole control on your system. You deserve it. The thread I referenced above will give you advices on where to buy such a card and have the guarantee that Trisquel will handle it out of the box (ThinkPenguin and Tehnoetic). You can try to get the same models elsewhere. See, for instance, this recent thread: https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/another-ar9271-unex-dnua-93f-usb-wifi-vendor I personally bought this Wifi adapter: http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/?model=TL-WN722Nversion=V1 Notice however that the manufacturers sometimes (rarely though) change the chipset in a given model. In other terms, outside ThinkPenguin and Tehnoetic, you may have a bad surprise: a model that was reported to work with Linux-libre but does not anymore because the chipset was changed.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Command line installer (Trisquel-mini)
You should then install the NetInstall and, once you are done, fire this command: $ sudo apt-get install trisquel-mini trisquel-mini-recommended As far as I know, the resulting system exactly is Trisquel Mini.

My machine suspends but on resume the screen is frozen. It does not do this on Trisquel 6. Or on any other distro. But you're right to say it has no show stoppers. On the contrary, it's very good already. As an aside - within the last few days a Beta has been released for the new ElementaryOS. Lots of crash dialogues. Inconsistent theming. (But Suspend works OK.) Trisquel 7, although not even released as a Beta, is more stable and more consistent visually. Just goes to show - a handful of hot young developers and a bounty system doesn't necessarily equal a better product.
