Re: [Trisquel-users] Learning self-defense

Wikipedia is your friend here. Read about SELinux, MACs (mandatory access
controls), DACs (discretionary access controls), Apparmor and other
implementations.

Basically it's a system to try and limit the capabilities of users and
programs to the smallest subset they need.

These things get very complex very fast. However that's not to say
impossible, if you don't mind doing a lot of reading you can do it.

And whether it is worth it is another thing. :) Of course in the industry and
other places where highest security is required these systems are
(supposedly) used.

To which I'll add: Debian Wheezy armhf hasn't patched yet either, so
Ruben's not alone. And there was another bash USN overnight, so as
bash is Trisquelized we can assume Ruben would work on that for
Toutatis first as it's the stable release.

I'd better clarify that as 'hasn't patched to the latest level.'

Re: [Trisquel-users] 802.11n usb ar9271 chipset works when connected to computer?

2014-09-27 Thread svhaab
Thanks. I was under the impression that ar9271 open firmware was software,
that should be installed on the 802.11n ar9271 usb device. I guess that was
wrong. Instead some diestros like trisquel will have the open firmware driver
in a package. And if the open firmware driver is not present in a distro, you
will have to install it yourself and for that you can use the software from
https://github.com/qca/open-ath9k-htc-firmware?

I put together a list of articles about third-party control. Could you have
a look, and let me know if you have suggestions.

Re: [Trisquel-users] 802.11n usb ar9271 chipset works when connected to computer?

2014-09-27 Thread Tiberiu C. Turbureanu
That's true. We use the term free firmware (free as in freedom), because
opennes is weaker than freedom. Even though some free software
developers in the open source camp call those "open firmware".

However, to use this chip in freedom, be sure to run the kernel
linux-libre with the free firmware. There is also a nonfree firmware
that some distributions might have in the repository or preinstalled. Be
carefull not to fall in their trap.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Epiphany Browser in Trisquel 7?

2014-09-27 Thread jadonplevesque
You could enable the gnome-stage PPA- it allows you to install GNOME 3.12 and
most GNOME applications, such as Maps, Epiphany, etc.

It runs like a charm.
(I'm pretty sure that the PPA has 100% free software; I'll have to look into
it a little bit more.)

[Trisquel-users] Getting involved with xpad Linux driver upstream

2014-09-27 Thread ericxdu23
I've been working with the Linux driver for XBox controllers known as "xpad".
Although I've been able to obtain a usable source file and modify it for my
own usage, I'm unsure of where to find the original upstream source code for
xpad. As there are a couple of serious bugs in the driver, I'd like to work
with any upstream developers to get some changes in and some bugs fixed. Can
anyone here tell me where to start looking?

Re: [Trisquel-users] What Free Software books should I suggest to our library?

2014-09-27 Thread Sachin
My suggestion would be the books sold by FSF
Free as in Freedom;
Free Software, Free Society.

and the other one would be
Structure and Interpretations of Computer Programs
