Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor browsing in Trisquel 7 is a BAD idea
I'll tell you what beats the NSA - standing up and realising that you're not doing anything wrong, even in speaking out against Government murders and lies. It's not for us to feel we have to hide from them. It is they who need to hide from us. Their whole reality is built around the notion that we're all stupid, they're all clever and they must oversee and monitor us. I do not accept this. Governments, especially the US and UK ones, are deeply compromised with stupidity and pocket lining - I see no one in either Administration fit to tell the likes of us what we should and should not be doing online. TOR seems to be about hiding from such people. I don't wish to hide from them, I wish to challenge them.

Hello, I have problem with Trisquel 7, 32 bits. I have Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The maximum resolution is 1280x800, but i can't choice this resolution. I have 2 choices 800x600 and 1024x768. I don't have this problem on Trisquel 6. The videocard is ATI x1400. I tried to modify xorg.conf but the computer restart in console mode. I tried to update linux-libre but i lost wifi. [Trisquel-users] libgtk-3-dev - unmet dependencies on install
Hi, Trying to install GTK+ v3 on my Trisquel installation, however the install result in a unmet dependencies for libpango1.0-dev and libcairo2-dev. Anybody with a clue? //Install sudo apt-get install libgtk-3-dev (Which should be suffient) //Result The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgtk-3-dev : Depends: libpango1.0-dev (= 1.30.0) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libcairo2-dev (= 1.10.0) but it is not going to be installed
Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control
It does work. Now I do not know whether I did it right or wrong first time I tried, but the thing is it does work. I mean I do sudo chown jane:jane /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness And then echo 500 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness and it works ok So then I tried again to make it work through keyboard shortcuts. I managed to create keyboard shortcuts (using System Settings Keyboard) for other applications but it does not work for echo 500 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness I don't know why. But I'm happy with what I have, now I can change the brightness and that's enough for me. So we can leave it here, unless it's fun for you, or we can contribute to a general fix that can be helpful to more people. Thanks once more
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel-mini performances
Regarding how packages end up in Trisquel, they mostly come from upstream which is ubuntu and debian. See https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-trisquel-made If you're willing and able to package and maintain some free program, you're probably welcome to do so. The very lightest setup can be made starting from a minimal netinstall but you need to know what to install.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Resolution problem
If I properly understand the page 157 of ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/inspiron-6400x_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf then your processor includes an Intel 945 GM graphical chipset. If you can use it, you will have much better performances (including 3D acceleration, video decoding acceleration, etc.) for a reduced power consumption. One way i to physically remove the AMD video card. But check first that you indeed have the Intel graphical chipset. The 'lspci' command should list it.
[Trisquel-users] GTK+ 3.0 Scrollbars
Hello all, I've written a simple Tk/Python program that allows you to adjust the delay before zoom mode is activated for scrollbars in GTK+ 3 applications: https://gitorious.org/gtk-scrollfix/gtk-scrollfix While it doesn't seem to be possible to disable this feature completely, setting the activation delay to a fairly high value (such as 30 seconds) will have much the same effect. Hopefully the Gnome Tweak Tool will allow you to change this at some point, but perhaps someone will find this useful in the interim.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No add-ons page in IceCat
On Trisquel 7 RC Icecat addon page is indeed missing. Gnash doesn't work. Duckduckgo and some other websites behave funny.. What I did is - removed icecat. installed noscript, adblock edge, https everywhere. Modified manually the user agent. I did the panopticlick test (panopticlick.eff.org) on both icecat and abrowser. On the default iceacat I got 19. After I tweaked a little my Abrowser I got 8.4 !!! As Montgomery says - excellent... Here is a link you can use to get a picture of how you set your user agent http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=24722 A lot of good stuff on that website.. nd here is a link with Montgomery sayin excellent .. :-) https://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MWJDzvrnu7Y/TTcXpCWZerI/AWY/zxu1GwrIBz0/s1600/excellent-mr-burns.gif
Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control
It's fun! :) And perhaps somebody else with a similar problem finds this thread. Ah, I guess the redirect (the ) might again be causing trouble... The fix is fortunately easy, just open the text editor of your preference and put that command there and save the file somewhere. Then we need to make the file executable, that's done with the commandchmod +x /path/to/the/fileFinally point the shortcut key to that file. To automate the chown thing, you need to open a text editor as a super user. (Prepend the name of the editor with sudo in case of CLI editors and with gksudo in case of graphical editors, e.g. sudo nano or gksudo gedit) Then save this script to /etc/rc2.d/S99-brightness #! /bin/sh ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: easy access to brightness control # Required-Start:$all # Required-Stop: # Default-Start: 2 # Default-Stop: # Short-Description: Make brightness user writeable ### END INIT INFO chown jane:jane /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness And make it executablechmod +x /etc/rc2.d/S99-brightness Now the next time you boot you should find yourself the owner of the brightness file. If you want we can make you two scripts that incrementally increase and decrease brightness like things work normally that you can bind to the related buttons/key combos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] libgtk-3-dev - unmet dependencies on install
use sudo aptitude install libgtk-3-dev
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7: how to install compiz?
Having finally gotten around to trying it: Here's the answer: By using the packages meant for Trisquel 6: So open (with sudo) the /etc/apt/sources.list file, and add a new line that reads: deb http://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ toutatis main Then update the repos (i.e. by doing sudo apt-get update) and install compiz. There's one problem, though, with CCSM (See screenshot). I remember seeing something similar in Manjaro last year (before I moved to Trisquel), though that might've been with Compiz 0.8.8 while the one from Trisquel 6 was 0.9.x. Or there's a version in https://launchpad.net/~eugenesan/+archive/ubuntu/ppa but I didn't test that one.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I have recently installed Trisquel 6.0.1 on a Desktop. After Installation I upgraded the whole system from Terminal via $apt-get update and $apt-get dist-upgrade commands. After this I gave $apt-get autoremove, a command usually used to remove packages which have no dependancy with any other installed package. To my surprise, a list consisting of somewhat between 10-25 packages seemed to be having no dependancies with any of installed packages(or orphanaged packages). Is it safe to remove these orphanaged packages? How do the community looks at this issue? I have earlier used Debian, but never faced the issue with orphanaged packages with it. It seems that package dependencies were not fully resolved while developing packages from Ubuntu main repos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 will be released next week.
windoze is for decepticons anyways! to comment further.. lets see - would someone rather install windbloooz and then spend a rather long time locking it up, installing antivirus-antimalware-antyspyware and all that sh.t , defragmenting the drive, optimizing registry and all kind of stupid useless problems . not to mention that the os and the great part of the programs it runs are proprietary-closed source-god knows what'ya doing with my data-crap!! ooor install a gnu/linux distro (better yet if 100% free sotware like trisquel) and relax and enjoy :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
After this I gave $apt-get autoremove, a command usually used to remove packages which have no dependancy with any other installed package. I have packages that meet this criteria on my system but I want those packages. So not having a dependency on another package isn't necessarily a useful way to determine if the package in question is actually needed or not. Is it safe to remove these orphanaged packages? I would say that it depends on what those packages are for and if you want the stuff that they do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Resolution problem
This is a problem with the newer AMD drivers forcing KMS, which requires nonfree microcode. It would be good to use the Intel chipset, but otherwise you can try downgrading some packages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor browsing in Trisquel 7 is a BAD idea
FYI everyone the default browser in trisquel 7 is not icecat and doesn't have the plugins and fingerprint modification that icecat does. Its incredibly bad. Basically trisquel 7 has a default browser using tor (in private mode) that is INCORRECTLY CONFIGURED and NO WARNINGS OR INFORMATION Magic Banana also brings up what if you favorite a website and go to it in clearmode (outside of private browsing)? Tor should be used in a seperate browser, configured correctly and used after proper warning/information has been provided. A seperate browser makes it less likely you'll mess up such as logging into a personal email in tor, or access a advocate or crimal site (for research or law enforcement) by accident. But seriously why did I really have to create this thread. It only takes a moment to realize why tor in private mode in the way trisquel 7 does it (even icecat but less worse) is a TERRIBLE idea. @andrew Also, this type of attack is a lot more difficult with Tor: Its one type of attack (planting cookies by your ISP) in exchange for another (malicious information, links or downloads). The problem you are describing is a problem with many clients and servers not using end-to-end encryption and/or authentication. Hence why it's especially bad to use tor when not knowing what it is @chris These examples are improper uses of Tor. If users took the advice of the Tor project then they would not be vulnerable. This isn't a problem with the Tor software. It is a problem with some Tor users thinking they know better than the experts. Of course it's improper use. It's bundled on software installed by default and a simple google query may make you believe its an open proxy. It's not tor users thinking they know better, its tor users who have no idea what tor is because you gave it to them without any information which is why I created this thread.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
Thank you for your answers. They are informative and they do not write themselves. Both TP-Link and other companies have begun to use this to prevent users from re-flashing routers When librecmc works on tp link tl wr841nd that was not tp link's intention?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
autoremove removes the *automatically installed* packages that are not depended on by any other package. For example, if you install package A along with package B (as a dependency of A), and later remove A, autoremove will try to remove B.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
TP-Link had no involvement in getting LibreCMC to work on this router. That was mostly the results of two projects: 1. OpenWRT (not free software though, LibreCMC is derived from OpenWRT) 2. LibreCMC (the project which we sponsor, and distribution which is derived from OpenWRT) 3. ThinkPenguin (we sponsor the LibreCMC project) LibreCMC was started prior to ThinkPenguin's involvment, but was not released until we, ThinkPenguin, got involved and pushed things forward. One of the original founders and lead developers of LibeWRT (Robert Call) is involved and he left this other project years ago as it was going in a direction he didn't like. He planned to start LibreCMC. However other factors made working on it very difficult. Every developer needs to eat after all. In any event we (ThinkPenguin) basically hired him as our CTO. The project is now being worked on by him with our sponsoring it. We're selling the routers and contributing back a percentage of the profits to the project just as we do with Trisquel. In any even the combination of all this is what has made LibreCMC happen. In order to make the project move forward we need to make as many sales of the routes as possible. Each router does not bring in a substantial amount of money and as such you need to sell a lot of routers to offset the time being put into it. Right now the project is bringing in less than enough to make it worthwhile. However- we're hopeful that'll change. Right now it's less than minimum wage (by US standards). Minimum wage is not really enough to live off. It's what you would call poverty by 1st world standards. Fortunately he's got other paid work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
It also works to remove packages I've installed because they're not depended on by anything else. So it's not perfect.
[Trisquel-users] How you noticed the new git repository management software of Trisquel?
I just noticed the new git repository management software, which is GitLab. You can access in from the right navbar (navigation bar) or via this link, https://devel.trisquel.info/groups/trisquel Currently registration is limited and you need to ask on IRC or send an email to the mailing list to get a nick.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How you noticed the new git repository management software of Trisquel?
Yes, this part of a community-based development system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Resolution problem
Are all Intel graphics cards free-software-friendly? If not, is there a list somewhere that shows which are (or are not) free software friendly?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control
Great! Everything worked. Even after a restart. Thank you. I did different keyboard shortcuts for different values, so it's quite handy now. But if you feel like posting how to do the last thing you suggested, I will give it a go for sure.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control
Ain't tinkering wonderful?! :) Here's script for one button (dunno if this makes it brighter of dimmer) #!/bin/sh file=/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness echo `expr $(cat $file) - 50` $file and here's the other #!/bin/sh file=/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness echo `expr $(cat $file) + 50` $file (You can try different increments besides 50.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 will be released next week.
Word brah, word!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Resolution problem
I believe the powervr based cards aren't free software friendly, here's a list of those http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units#PowerVR_based
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel-mini performances
This issue has been reported by me over a year ago and it still persists in Trisquel 6 Mini. See this ticket: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/9493 I really hope it won't be an issue anymore with Trisquel 7.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel-mini performances
Trisquel Mini 7.0 uses LightDM not LXDM so it can't have the problem. Leny

[Trisquel-users] Does trisquel run on many Chromebooks?
Does trisquel run on many chromebooks? This link says the chromebook pixel (very high end) works https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/chromebook but doesn't mention anything else. Are there any popular chromebooks that trisquel has no problems running on? If it works on a version of debian (not ubuntu bc i know they use non free drivers) would trisquel work on it? Do most/all google made chromebooks work? It appears samsung, acer and HP are popular does trisquel work on any of them?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
No it doesn't. It only removes those that were previously installed as a dependency of another package, but no longer are depended on by any package. If you install a package manually, autoremove won't remove it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does trisquel run on many Chromebooks?
I have wondered about this recently too
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
No it doesn't. It only removes those that were previously installed as a dependency of another package, but no longer are depended on by any package. If you install a package not as a dependency of another package, autoremove won't remove it. If you say. That doesn't match my experience though. I became tired of always re-installing it and put the packages on hold to prevent their removal. Anyway, the thing that matters you should always look through the list and see if you really want to remove the packages, because you might still want to keep something. Which was precisely my original message. Thanks for confirming that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I was basically restating what's in the manpage (which is a : autoremove is used to remove packages that were automatically installed to satisfy dependencies for other packages and are now no longer needed. If it doesn't behave that way, just report a bug :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does trisquel run on many Chromebooks?
Trisquel won't run on any of the ARM-based (e.g. Exynos, NVIDIA) Chromebooks as it is x86-only. I believe you might have to change the BIOS settings to use Developer Mode in order to delete Chrome OS and install Trisquel on the Chromebook. There is a thread from last year on the Acer C7 model specifically: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/acer-c7-chromebook-updates Muhammed just posted a wiki page which might be worth reading/watching for updates: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/chromebook Search might help as well: https://trisquel.info/en/search/node/chromebook Andrew
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does trisquel run on many Chromebooks?
I edited that page today when I saw it linked in Jimmy's post. It looks (from the date next to my name) like I just posted it today, but it has been up since I noticed mYself's posts about Chromebooks probably a few months ago. I added a link to this topic from that wiki page; Jimmy's question is an important one I think.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I would suggest there be a mechanism to resolve dependencies when the system is upgraded. If what Update Manager does is simple apt-get dist-upgrade, chances are that the system will accumulate with unresolved dependencies over the course of time. It would be safe to build a dependency tree, similar to what debian does, before packages are updated so that unresolved dependencies can be removed in the first place. Maintaining orphanaged packages as pointed out by jxself can be beneficial in one way, but for a stable OS distro like Trisquel, it is always advised to have resolve all dependencies so that the system remains robust.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I recognise some of the orphaned packages after a fresh Trisquel install as stuff Ubiquity uses from looking at its source for a bug in 6.0. So I guess i might be stuff it doesn't self remove just in case. Whatever, an apt-get autoremove of them has never given me any problems. The Update Manager upgrade process last time I used it was again the same as Ubuntu's with modifications to the package lists and deleted all the cruft and orphan packages. I haven't tested the 6.0.1 - 7.0 upgrade yet, but I don't imagine it'll be any different once bedded in. apt-get autoremove is to my observations as legimet and the man page says. However, having used first Debian then Ubuntu then Trisquel since around 2001 I have seen something like the situation jxself mentions from using both aptitude and apt-get. I don't know whether it's something like and aptitude install followed by an apt-get remove doesn't remove the additional suggests installs or not for certain, but that's what I thought at the time.
[Trisquel-users] How do I access my system from another computer?
I'm thinking of just bringing Tails and flash drives to where I'm going today so I don't have to bring my laptop (need a break bringing my bag, my back kinda hurts -_-). How do I access my system from outside or remotely (the place I'm going is in the same place/city)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I access my system from another computer?
Use ssh
