Re: [Trisquel-users] Kernel panics
I believe I have isolated the cause of all the weird problems. Once first up with Trisquel 6.0 Live, I did the following 3 commands: $ free -m Mem: 431 425 5 buffers176 254 Swap: 1014 0 1014 $ sudo swapoff /dev/zram0 $ free -m Mem: 431 425 5 buffers178 252 Swap 798 0 798 - With Disk utility, I have the following listing: Storage Devices Local Storage Pata Host Adapter Peripheral Devices 701 MB File(filesyste.squashfs) Generic Flash Disk (unused ext2 partition) 40 GB Hard Disk(with fat32, 800MB swap, and Ext4) 193 MB Solid State Disk I was now able to access and reformat what was still defined as swap on the solid state drive (/dev/zram0) to ext2 and I also encrypted it with a long key, to ensure nothing from it could be accessed by any process. I didn't even bother benchmarking it any more. While I am up it should hopefully stay quarantined. - With gparted, the only listed devices are the bootable usb flash and usb winchester: /dev/sda /dev/sdb I thank you all for your interest and helpful advice. Martins trisquel@trisquel:~/Documents$ uptime 12:12:23 up 16:41, 8 users, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.07 trisquel@trisquel:~/Documents$ free -m total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem: 368353 14 0 16112 -/+ buffers/cache:224144 Swap: 798138660 Peace at last!

You could try youtube-dl to download videos. (http://rg3.github.com/youtube-dl/) It's in the repos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] AMD processors will support Coreboot better than Intel in the future
Yeah, but things aren't that simple if one's using a laptop :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Spying software hidden deep within hard drives made by Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and other top manufacturers
A tad off-topic by now but going back to 1.5Mb(or, God forbid, .7Mb) floppies is a bit.mad, isn't it? An old 20 GB IDE HDD would make a bit more sense, for example. Or do those spy as well? :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] AMD processors will support Coreboot better than Intel in the future
I use Nvidia over AMD for video cards for better support of free drivers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] any canadians in the house!
ok I can move this topic to the troll hole but can you tell me why?
Re: [Trisquel-users] any canadians in the house!
because it has nothing to do with software of any kind? :)
[Trisquel-users] SMPlayer doesn't play youtube vids
I use minitube to play youtube videos. The problem is minitube crashes sometimes and also it doesn't provide you with the capability of downloading the vids from the tube. So I was looking for an alternative and found out about SMTube which is integrated with SMPlayer and works great. Downloading vids through SMTube is as simple as right click and record video. The issue I am experiencing is I can't play videos from YT using SMPlayer but have to resort to VLC player which is slightly slower on my intel atom and also mutes the sound if I skip forward or backward. I went to the options of SMPlayer and updated the youtube code, tried all the output drivers in the video option, to no avail. Do you know how to solve it? SMplayer/tube would be simply perfect if it used mplayer for video reproduction. cheers

Re: [Trisquel-users] SMPlayer doesn't play youtube vids
Try this addon for Abrowser to download your vids from youtube and play it in you prefered media player: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/latest/11869/addon-11869-latest.xpi?src=cb-dl-featured Or turn off the gnash player and watch vids with html5 (sadly need javascript enabled).
Re: [Trisquel-users] replacement for adobe after effects?
Thank you guys, i will try out your suggestions!
Re: [Trisquel-users] replacement for adobe after effects?
Last time I used it, it always crashed when i tried to import a clip...
Re: [Trisquel-users] replacement for adobe after effects?
i use kdenlive for video editing: https://kdenlive.org/
Re: [Trisquel-users] replacement for adobe after effects?
No no, i just need basic stuff; not fancy special effects or something! I just need: adjust brightness, color temperature, contrast... blur certain parts of the image (once i got a better camera, i won't need this anymore), manipulate lighting; really nice would be the ability to join two pictures together... i mean, if two characters are having a conversation and i want to play both myself. a few filters... black and white or something like that; but that's basically it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] replacement for adobe after effects?
Blender! In YouTube have many tutorials. You can search in Blenderguru and Blendertuts too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] unetbootin fork
i use it sometimes its convenient if you need a os on you usb stick and you don’t have the iso file already
Re: [Trisquel-users] replacement for adobe after effects?
quantumgravity Try using blender for the background effects, combine with pitvi it work for me. I did a small movie, ONLY A MINUTE MOVIE for my daughters birthday. READ CAREFULLY the link that Supertramp post it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot x60 always at 100% cpu usage
Trisquel 7 uses upstart. “dpkg -S /sbin/init” (no necessarily as root) will tell you the package from where the init executable comes.
[Trisquel-users] Re : SMPlayer doesn't play youtube vids
ViewTube (on top of GreaseMonkey) is another solution (for YouTube and other sites): http://isebaro.com/viewtube/

Open a terminal and run top, it will show you which process is eating your CPU.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot x60 always at 100% cpu usage
it seems to be mostly system prosessors like init so dose this mean that my computer is just too slow? i wondered if libreboot had anything to do with it as this was not happening before

Re: [Trisquel-users] The truth about Purism
Every time I hear about this it makes me angry. So many people donated to Purism's fundraiser, and they're getting jack shit in return. This will undoubtedly give those people much more hesitation about donating to libre projects that can actually deliver their promises.
[Trisquel-users] I can not press the right click
Hi all, I have a problem with my notebook, I have installed the latest version of Trisquel and today has given me the problem that when I press right click on the screen does not show me the menu where it should show Make New Folder or Open terminal , this happens only in the section of the desktop. I would appreciate any kind of help, because for my part I am also trying to solve it, thank you very much.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The truth about Purism
It had to happen, people need to study more until they actually understand what's going on and not just I will give you freedom. Just look this cool website! How could I lie at you? I mean... Just donate So many people donated to Purism's fundraiser It's not that bad, this shows that there are people interested in a completely libre computer, this is important to get manufacturers make computers that comply our free software ideals. and they're getting jack shit in return. At least is free software friendly, not libre, but friendly at least. Nothing that we haven't saw before but hey, it has a nice design and decent specs.
[Trisquel-users] Apt-get upgrade runs amuck in Trisquel thumb drive
Starting with an 8GB flash disk, I formatted it fat32 and then used Gparted (on another Trisquel 7 flash drive that is working OK) to split it into a pair of roughly 4GB partitions, one formatted fat32 and the other ext3. Then I used Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.5.8.exe in my *inXP laptop to extract and install trisquel_7.0_i686.iso into the ext3 partition (which the installer reformatted fat32 anyway). All OK so far. I even used Add/Remove Appplications to poke a few additional goodies in there. The installer will not use more than 4GB of that 8GB flash drive, so the extra steps outlined above put the waste space to use for storing data needed for various purposes. Now comes the puzzler: Next step was to use sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade to bring the installation up to date. At the start, the update wanted to download ca. 350MB, which it said would use up another 75MB of disk space. OK sez I; let's do it. After the download had finished, and just as the installation process was starting, I checked how much space was left: ca. 1GB. A couple of hours later, Trisquel informs me that my computer is full. At last sighting, the upgrade was still unpacking language files and help files ... Every language known to the Trisquel community. More help than I'll ever know how to find. Fast forward ... I'm on my third try now. I have done all this two and a half times, and I'm curious: How much space is there in this Trisquel partition ? I check: There's 1 GB of space and 22MB of files, according to the properties button applied to the Computer in Places. While all this was going on, the second partition, still fat32, has a bunch of image and video files that I put there and which consume about 2GB, and they're all just fine and unblemished. Gparted tells me there's still two, ca. 4GB partitions. They're both fat32; The boot partition (3.99GB) is mounted at /cdrom and the data partition (3.48GB) is mounted at /media/trisquel/4790-C5E3. There's an additional lba flag on the boot partition. I've got 1.49GB of free space in the boot partition into which the upgrade files have to fit. Therefore, according to Gparted, sudo apt-get upgrade should have oodles of space into which to download and unpack 350MB of upgrade files. However, in /media, there are /media/cdrom (aas well as /media/trisquel/4790-C5E3 with the pix and videos): /media/cdrom/casper /media/cdrom/casper-rw /media/cdrom/dists /media/cdrom/isolinux /media/cdrom/LEEME.TXT /media/cdrom/license.txt /media/cdrom/md5sum.txt /media/cdrom/pool /media/cdrom/preseed /media/cdrom/README.TXT /media/cdrom/Uni-USB-Installer-Copying.txt /media/cdrom/Uni-USB-Installer-Readme.txt /media/cdrom/uui and in /cdrom, there's /cdrom/casper /cdrom/casper-rw /cdrom/dists /cdrom/isolinux /cdrom/LEEME.TXT /cdrom/license.txt /cdrom/md5sum.txt /cdrom/pool /cdrom/preseed /cdrom/README.TXT /cdrom/Uni-USB-Installer-Copying.txt /cdrom/Uni-USB-Installer-Readme.txt /cdrom/uui. Which may actually be OK, as they're both the same file system ... But what am I doing wrong with sudo apt-get upgrade ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Apt-get upgrade runs amuck in Trisquel thumb drive
Soyou were performing the update on a LiveUSB?

Re: [Trisquel-users] A company tracked 530 million mobile phones in Asia with drones
I'm personally OK with ads, to be honest. But do I believe there's nothing more to it than ads? Well, why should I?
Re: [Trisquel-users] unetbootin fork
Personally, I always download the ISO from outside Unetbootin, for fear of Unetbootin downloading an out-of-date version.
[Trisquel-users] A company tracked 530 million mobile phones in Asia with drones
I was thinking of buying a new phone, but after reading some news about a company called AdNear I changed my mind. Supposedly this company uses drones to profile and track people through their mobile phones for advertising purposes. What do you think of that? I personally was very scared. https://adnear.com/
