Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting an obsolete package with apt-get
I'm pretty sure it either is or isn't in the repository. If a package is considered to be obsolete (e.g. ffmpeg), it stops being included in the repository, perhaps transitioning into something else at first (in the case of ffmpeg, avconv). If a program you want isn't in the repo, you'll have to install it from some other source.

What versions of debian and ubuntu correspond to the current version to trisquel?
[Trisquel-users] position independent code and MMUs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Position-independent_code I read the above artice. It says non-pic aware addressing is faster than pic code. It also mentions MMU units in such a way that I wonder if it is still necessary to compile libraries as PIC, or maybe sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. I'd like to have a good understanding of this. If its possible that a given library, running on a system with an MMU does not have to be compiled as PIC then that could be a way to get some performance improvements, but how much? Enough to be worth while or just .5 percent?? Can anyone comment?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot X200
You're in the right place: Trisquel is very newbie-friendly and low maintenance, as are Thinkpads in general although my own are much older and wouldn't impress even the drunkest of hobbits. 120 GB should be fine, especially if you have an external drive for archives that don't absolutely need to be accessible 24/7.

Is there an AMD option? If intel is releasing Chips-Motherboards without vpro-txt, are there any safe ones from AMD? [VPro TPM TXT VT AMD-V Flicker TEM TZones on-board ARM processor AMD SVM TEE AMT IDE-R Execute Disable Bit PTT Intel Secure key] I try to research this, but my search results return next to nothing, and what is returned seems intentionally confusing. Which of these are dangerous, and which not? Does anyone know of a list of motherboards without this stuf?

Re: [Trisquel-users] LIBRE PLANET 2015 is here....!!
+1 I have dropped a mail to Libby Reinish, Campaigns Manager at FSF, asking whether FSF can record this years conference for non-recipients. Actally, last year's Libre Planet conference is available in GNU MediaGoblin[1]. So possibly they *MIGHT* use the channel for this year as well. If you plan to record the vedio, use a free media format for that like Ogg Vorbis/Theora, Speex etc. And share it in the community!! [1] http://media.libreplanet.org/

Re: [Trisquel-users] Multiplayer online games for casual players
Regarding the topic of this thread, I suggest The Battle for Wesnoth which can be played offline, connecting directly to a friend's computer, in the official server or in an independent server. Using a server doesn't requires NAT traversal. MANHOSO: Welcome!. I hope that you will find free software enjoyable for it's technical advantage, but more importantly, because it respects you as an user instead of just using you as a tool for profit. Linux is a kernel but unfortunately there is the common misconception that “Linux” is an operating system, which it is not. (and there is people who actively promote and are proud of making this mistake). We use the name GNU/Linux which also credits the GNU project, which is the project that started the free software movement and developed a big part of the operating system. See What's in a Name? and Linux and the GNU System. The Spanish language Wikipedia rectifies this mistake, and its article for GNU/Linux uses that name. Bear in mind that even though learning to program is not especially demanding, contributing to a serious project (with 10 000 lines of code) requires experience, patience, and time. If you have further inquiries, then please open a new thread.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot X200
Trisquel, followed by gNewSense/Musix. Dragora actually seems to be preety intimidating difficulty-of-maintainance wise. And the OS is GNU. Linux is a kernel. Operating systems need a kernel (and the FSF don't seem to have home-grown ones that can compete against Linux), but that doesn't mean it's named after the kernel it uses(take a look at Android, for example. It uses Linux, but the OS is still Android - a different one to GNU). Let's put it this way: If you put a Wankel engine from an FD Mazda RX-7 into a VW Combi, the Combi is still a Combi, isn't it?

I'm using Trisquel 7. Presumably there's a way of telling apt-get which archive to use - it's easy enough to locate that archive, as Kompozer is alive and well in the hinterlands, just not in the current trisquel repository.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting an obsolete package with apt-get
You need to add the external repository with add-apt-repository. That is of course assuming the repository exists, and you've found it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
Compilation translated human-readable source code into machine-readable object code. It's something you have to do to execute the code, unless it's an interpreted language like JavaScript with no intermediate form. In the case of a language like C, the object code is machine code: the native language of the CPU (think assembly). Usually, when you're sent a binary (e.g. from the Trisquel repo), it's already compiled in the way that produces the best-optimized binary. Re-compiling won't do any harm, but it won't do any good either unless the person who compiled the binary cannot be trusted to give you the binary that actually corresponds with the source code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] kernel speed - antiquated protocol
I've never heard of that before, so I don't know if it exists or not.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot X200
I will opt for Libreboot X200 with 8gb ram and 120gb ssd. I hope 120 gb is enough. the cpu and graphics to play the games can be also very poor. Now what kind of games are 100% free software or according to the philosophy and where can I find beyond the Libregamewiki. how to distinguish between 100% free of not 100% free.
Re: [Trisquel-users] kernel speed - antiquated protocol
I have never heard about one such protocol. Where did you read about it?. Can you provide a link?.
Re: [Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
Are libraries compiled? Is there any sort of optimization that can be done to them? It depends on programming language and implementation. For C and C++ which are the most common non-web (server side or client side) programming languages, libraries are compiled very similarity as how programs are compiled to executables. Almost all optimizations that can be used when compiling to executables can be used when compiling libraries. A notable exception is that when compiling native-code dynamically loaded libraries (Also called “shared libraries”, they have the file name extension “.so”), the machine code must be position independent (search for “position-independent code”) which is done with -fpic in GCC, that disables some optimizations. Some programming languages have native-compiling, bytecode-compiling and interpreting implementations; for example: Common Lisp and Scheme. I know you can compile an executable and if you turn on compiler optimizations it might speed it up but also might make bugs and limits it to one processor. This is a misconception. You should raise your standard for what you think you know (research better before thinking you know something). Optimization doesn't introduced bugs unless the compiler is buggy. If a program (whether executable or a library) is correct, then a correct compiler will produce a correct output (executable, shared library, bytecode, etcetera). Optimization sometimes trigger bugs (or it may hide bugs that would otherwise appear). In GCC only some optimization options enable or disable instructions. It doesn't limit the program to only one process, but to the set of processors that implement those instructions. The main option to enable instructions is

Re: [Trisquel-users] kernel speed - antiquated protocol
Sorry I don't / can't. I thought about doing a search of kernel sources for x.25 and seeing if it is in there anywhere although there is no guarantee it is labled as such or that x.25 is the one in question.
Re: [Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
It may be used fully free, but it's not so by default, and their idea of what is free software is different from the FSF definition so to have a fully free system according to the FSF idea you have to watch for the differences (I use Debian and also Trisquel, and that is what I do). It seems like you have been deceived by their practice of truth by decree: They claim that Debian is fully free, because although they distribute, document, support and invite to use proprietary software using the same infrastructure, they claim that it is not part of Debian. That deceiving practice is even supported by their social contract (see point 5), hence that I call it truth by decree (instead of facts). In the past, they were even more hypocritical: the kernel (regardless of whether the user intended to install the proprietary software) came with proprietary blobs. See Debian Doubletalk for more information and also https://www.debian.org/vote/2004/vote_002.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Getting an obsolete package with apt-get
KompoZer is discontinued. It has not received any update in more than five years. I guess LibreOffice Writer now is a better WYSIWYG HTML editor. If you insist on a Gecko-based editor, try BlueGriffon... which looks discontinued as well (no release in two years) but at least includes some modern features (modern as in HTML5, CSS3, etc.).
[Trisquel-users] Re : compiling libraries
Rule of thumb: trust the developer who makes the package (especially if he or she is a Debian/Ubuntu/Trisquel developer).

Re: [Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
the last time i checked debian did not have non-free software
Re: [Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
First of all. What is Debian? Debian is basically a collection of packages. Now it's true that all the essential system software and libraries are free software, and it's also true that only this packages are included by default. BUT, the repository non-free is still part of Debian, also packages in the repository contrib can have dependencies on non-free packages. So, does Debian have non-free software? Yes, because there is a whole official repository with lots of non-free packages. The only thing that is true is that Debian doesn't include those by default.

Here are some: - Using gitbull, and sharing it with your friends and family - Reporting issues and bugs that you find - suggesting improvements - bring your own improvement thanks to libreplanet and the fsf that throught their existant have permit this project to happen gitbull is a community coding fan of codes are welcome. github says they are social coding gitbull - Community coding Code is part of our community Free code we are a community of people that love free software gitbull is a free place for that type of coders.
Re: [Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
For that matter, we could use Debian or Ubuntu and its proprietary software.
[Trisquel-users] Re : compiling libraries
I meant trust the developers for turning on optimizations (that do not trigger bugs). I did not mean that every package coming from Debian/Ubuntu is OK. Proprietary software is bad no matter who packages it.

Come on guys, don't forget Doom! You can play DM, Co-op and such with the original iwads or FreeDoom (A free culture replacement).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Multiplayer online games for casual players
Mana World! It's the only MMORPG that I really like. There aren't any complex abilities or classes or strategies to memorize, you just go out and fight monsters with friends :) which to me, is what an MMO should be about. They have lots of regular updates and it's already a pretty big world. Aside from that, everyone else mentioned the multiplayer games I have tried: Minetest, Wesnoth, 0 A.D., and Xonotic.
[Trisquel-users] Re : LIBRE PLANET 2015 is here....!!
OggConvert's last release is almost five years old. I doubt it is still maintained. And OggConvert is quite limited. IMHO, Trisquel 8 should ship Transmageddon, which is far more complete feature-wise (any free audio/video codec, rotation, etc.).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting an obsolete package with apt-get
I don't think that's a repository, but it does contain several deb files. If you want to install them, you can just download the correct deb files for your architecture and install them e.g. with GDebi. It might not work, though; it depends on what software the package depends on.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting an obsolete package with apt-get
Here's what I've tried, so far without success: sudo add-app-repository http://oldarchive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/k/kompozer/; That took OK, but subsequently, sudo apt-get install kompozer failed. Couldn't find the kompozer package. Evidently, http://oldarchive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/k/kompozer/ isn't a repository, even though it's legitimately part of trisquel.info.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Saving Gitorious repositories
According to https://about.gitlab.com/2015/03/03/gitlab-acquires-gitorious/ : Starting today, Gitorious.org users can import their existing projects into GitLab.com by clicking the “Import projects from Gitorious.org” link when creating a new project. So, it is not automatic but it is only a link to click. It is not clear from https://about.gitlab.com/features/ whether this link is present in the free (as in freedom and as in gratis) Community Edition but I believe it is because Project importing from GitHub to GitLab is a feature of the community edition. That said, I am not supporting companies whose business model is to attract user with free software and then constantly invite/force them into proprietary software (the Enterprise Edition of GitLab in this case)... but that still is better than only proposing proprietary software (like GitHub).
[Trisquel-users] Re : kernel compiling
Compiling is (quite) easy: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/compiling-gnu-linux-libre-kernel Configuring the kernel is the hard part. The Gentoo Handbook used to be (and probably still is) a good first documentation on the topic: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Kernel#Default:_Manual_configuration (forget about all blocks but those marked with KERNEL).

A given version of Trisquel only has one repositories. If you mean the different sections (security, updates, and backports) of the repository, then click them all in the third tab of Software Updates (in the System settings). Trisquel 7 basically has all the free packages that Ubuntu 14.04 has. If you try to add Ubuntu/Debian repositories, you will most likely break your system for no additional free software.

If you plan to record the conference sessions, use a free media format for that like Ogg(Vorbis/Theora)[2]. my camera is sadly using the mpeg 4 format but i will convert it to ogg/webm before sharing
Re: [Trisquel-users] LIBRE PLANET 2015 is here....!!
There is a company called Elphel that makes cameras that record in the Theora format, but they are very expensive. As far as I am aware, no major camera manufacturers make cameras that support that format.
[Trisquel-users] kernel speed - antiquated protocol
Someone told me that there is an antiquated networking protocol that is in the kernel that slows it down a lot because the kernel keeps pausing to check on that protocol even if you are not using. I think maybe it was x.25 or something but not sure. Anyway, the story goes that the kernel developers kind of hard wired into the code and it isn't in with the options you would select when turning stuff on and off. You have to go in and manually edit the code and so on. Does anyone know about this? Is there a more appropriate forum for me to post it to?
[Trisquel-users] compiling libraries
I'm not a programmer. I know you can compile an executable and if you turn on compiler optimizations it might speed it up but also might make bugs and limits it to one processor. Are libraries compiled? Is there any sort of optimization that can be done to them? I read up on refactoring. Is there any program that automatically refactors?
