I do not understand why we cannot go back to the old Gnome. The code did not
disappear.

Anything connected to systemd and their way of building software is dead to
me. It is bloated and just wastes and wastes and wastes. It is all about NIH
syndrome. They should be game devs, not system devs. More features in a game
are wanted and it is expected to take some resources. System code just needs
to stay out of the way. We don't use computers except to use the programs and
the apps. System code is the scaffolding on which that hangs. Linux
pre-systemd pre-gnome-imposion was elegant. SysV is easy.

I just installed a Upstart based distro (not even systemd) on an extra
computer. SysV was easy to set up, remove programs from startup. With Upstart
you must remove X bit from /etc/init.d/ script! so if you want to start it
manually you cant. Trash. SysV is fine. Systemd is worse than Upstart.

Various Phoronix readers have written in this weekend and commented in the
forums and elsewhere that systemd developers forked the Linux kernel. This is
not the case...

Yes they forked LINUX the OS, indeed not the kernel, all of userspace!

consider that the only essential freedom when it comes to artistic data
is the freedom to redistribute exact copies. Not being allowed to modify the
content is not essential (as it is for software) because you do not achieve a
work with non-functional data.

Disagree. Code and are are the same. Atleast they feel the same to me when
I'm working on either. Neither are science. Data can be in code or pulled
from seperate file. No difference. More fun when you code it though because
you then really know how to manipulate it.

Release 53. As in traditional free software and opensource tradition: release
early, release often.

New weapons: Flanged Mace, Light Crossbow, Crude Bow, Composite Bow.

Arrows, Crossbow bolts, and Balistta bolts can now be set alight: press R and
F key concurrently when near a fire.

(F and R is easiests on weapons, R then F for ballista works the best)

Many weapons now have custom aimsettings for ; key (altaim (center)) so their
ironsights are lined up.

Enjoy!

Notes for coders:
---
For those wishing the newest code updated at all times (should they arise):
Get the ISO, then pull the git repo called xonotic-concrete.
name it xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir and put it in
XonoticDir/data/
so the path to latest qcsrc would be:
XonoticDir/data/xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir/qcsrc/
and models would be
XonoticDir/data/xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir/models/
textures would be
XonoticDir/data/xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir/textures/

Then go in XonoticDir/data/xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir/qcsrc/
and do the command make
(you will need the quakeC compiler: gmqcc)

You can also put this in ~/.xonotic/data/
IE: ~/.xonotic/data/xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir/qcsrc/
etc.

Then you can 'git pull' in (wherever)/data/xonotic-data-bla.pk3dir/
if you want newest gamecode.

xonotic-concrete is the main gamecode git repo.

monolitic (there are git repos if they'd look, but that isn't good enough,
they want the ISO __gone__, and ISO is not acceptable). Apparently this
means the game is worthless:

Websites are beyond its scope.
If you would like to distribute the fork in another manner or even create a
website that might attract more people
who might wish to play the fork, feel free. Note, however, more users,
different ways to distribute, benefits those

working on the fork in no way.

So you develop a game that you don't particularly want people to play. Looks
like it's not worth downloading the ISO to give it a try then.

There is no focus other than to be like how life is somewhat.

In life, now, we have access to everything from ancient medieval weapons to
modern weapons. Same with planes, tanks, everything. The past doesn't
disappear, it just gets ignored. Still with us are the castles and buildings
of old, but we only build grey shacks now.

There are 72 weapons now.
Every so often work is given to an underprivileged section of the code, so
that you feel you have full weapon sets for all parts (future, modern,
medeval, etc), that nothing is just tacked on. This is done by adding, not
subtracting.

The aim of the project is to not restrict the player. Also for the builders
to enjoy. Also to be a world a mapper can just start working on (hence the
many texture packs and the editor included). To bring back the fun of Unreal
and UT(99), which you could just put in your computer and start editing
castles and towns and then fight in them.

(linux binaries of the map editor are in
bla/mapping/netradiant/somethinglinux.zip)

(had to be compressed because running out of room on DVD)

Thankyou for feed back, keep it coming :)

A 2nd supplemental DVD is being pondered. That can house new (opensource)
player models and contributed maps if anyone want's to add stuff.

Only a few megs are left on 1st DVD so that has to be used for code and
code-used-models.

This is just one release of GNOME 3. The GNOME developers are not
incompetent; these bugs in GNOME 3.10 and GNOME 3.8 are probably already
fixed in the latest GNOME releases. We just aren't going to get the fixes in
Trisquel 7 because of Canonical's (typically reasonable) policy of not
upgrading most software within an Ubuntu release.[1]

One thing I would like to see, mind, is GNOME having some sort of long-term
releases that get just bugfixes and nothing else, so distros like Debian and
Ubuntu LTS can use them.

[1] Your post is actually an off-topic rant about systemd, I know. But I do
think it's worth pointing out that a couple bugs isn't a good reason to
regress to old, unmaintained versions of GNOME. (I wouldn't be opposed to

They're usually the same; the Open Source Definition is indirectly derived

Spaceloop uses warpzones, if you look in the .map file in gtk or netradiant

is similar to how the 2001 space odyssey map for Unreal(97) was made.

making a tarball would be a bother. After every editing session a new DVD is

A 4gb tarball wouldn't be any easier for anyone to download than an ISO, and

Submitted by MajorLunaC on Tue, 03/31/2015 - 15:55 Permalink

Ok, so first of all, you're the one submitting the game to gaming sites. This
implies you would like others to play the game and hear about it. You also
mentioned that you want a high download count on SourceForge, I suppose to
gain popularity. As a developer of games, you have to understand that you at
least partially should appease some people for what they want, or in this
case, what they NEED. I never said that I WANTED an alternative system to
download the files, I said that I and others NEEDED other ways to download
the files, because from a completely objective, logical, practical,
programming, and distribution, distributing a completely digital online game
that gets updated frequently SOLELY as an ISO, is simply unheard of,
especially in the gaming world. It's impractical, non-functional, and causes
problems for very many. If you ask any developer if ISOs are the way to
distribute a digital game online, they will say NO WAY! Do you and your
group even download the ISOs from the site to see if they download well and
in a reasonable amount of time?

We're not asking you to make our game, or to go out of your way to do
anything special for us. We're saying that we are ALL having problems
downloading your game, it's not working, so please help us get the game in
another way that's easier for everyone, including you and your team, so that
you don't have to keep making ISOs all the time. All I've heard so far is
that you expect us to just listen to you, and anything we say is worthless
and beneath you. There's a word for that, see if you can come up with it
(political/government type).

All I really NEED right now is another repository for the maps, since you
said they're only in the ISO. Although I do see maps.pk3 in many of the
repositories you listed , is that all the maps? Please at least make a
repository for maps. I'm sure I can come up with a script to download
everything needed for the game directly from the repositories. Maybe I'll
even come up with a branch that distributes the game in a reasonable way.

repository for maps
The maps rarely change. Use the ISO. We are up against a limit of a DVD. More
maps would be made if not. Thoughts are to make an additional DVD for new
characters and maps.

repository (for updates)
The git repo xonotic-concrete is what you want.
It's struture is like:
xonotic-concrete/models
xonotic-concrete/textures
xonotic-concrete/sounds

What you do is you get this repo, but rename it xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir
you move that pk3dir to a data dir of xontic:
XonoticChaos/data/xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir
So now it is: XonoticChaos/data/xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir/sounds
XonoticChaos/data/xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir/sounds/models
XonoticChaos/data/xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir/sounds/qcsrc
You can also put it in ~/.xonotic/data/

You then get the compiler gmqcc (it is on the iso btw, along with the rest
of the source)

you go into XonoticChaos/data/xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir/sounds/qcsrc
and make.

Whenever you want to update code you git pull in xonotic-concrete-data.pk3dir

Eventually, some months later, get an iso again if you suspect some maps have
changed (usually small settings).

Download difficulty
This may be due to the host, some people it works, others it doesn't.
Sometimes they take awhile to update the mirrors. They don't charge so we use
them. They are good.

ISO is hard
It is nothing for us to make an ISO, We do this multiple times per day
sometimes as we back up whatever progress we make in each coding session.
ISOs are a matter of course, making the release ISO is just make iso but do

Everything is compressed in the ISO. Everything. It's all in pk3s (zip
files). Can't squeeze it anymore :(.

4.4 GB ISO just to try out a game that they know almost nothing about,

I don't understand this logic. It's as if I owe them something. People really
are assholes today. How dare you offer me this offering.

Fuck them.

have you actually tried submitting it to debian?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone else getting a CPU spikes when you edit anything in Gedit?

2015-03-31 Thread onpon4
It doesn't have to; that's why Ubuntu and Debian don't pull new versions into
their releases, the potential compatibility breakage is less important than
the potential bugfixes. But if it's unmaintained for a really long time,
you'll get some application breakage, and in the more short-term, you won't
get any improvements, new features, etc.

There's a reason Mint didn't just keep using GNOME 2 forever; it did so for a
while, but at some point, you have to use something current. In any case, why
would you even suggest using GNOME 2? It's been superseded just fine by MATE.

and why do people normally recommend youtube-dl for example

is there a reason why pepole tend to recommend youtube-dl above xmbc?

You know, you could just ship the base game in a tarball (compressed!), and
ship any optional things (e.g. extra maps) separately. I mean, you do know
that 4.4 GB takes hours to download on a DSL connection like mine, right?

Also, if you don't care that people don't want to spend hours downloading a
4.4 GB ISO just to try out a game that they know almost nothing about, why
are you cross-posting drama over here?

If they won't take the 900KB game specifically because they do not like the
contributor to it, I doubt they'll take the 4GB game.

in this time trisquel not use systemd
But it will used in future versions
in Unix system design, it is a generally understood principle that a big task
not be handled by a big program, but rather a collection of small programs,
each tackling one specific, well-defined component of the larger task. You
often hear the phrase “do one thing, and do it well” as a guiding
principle
for writing a Unix program. One major reason for this is that a small program
has fewer places for bugs to hide than a big program does.

and another Unix system design principle is, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix
it. For production systems you really want to leave well enough alone; and
the sysvinit that comes with Linux is simple enough, well-understood enough,
and stress-tested enough that you really don’t want to mess with it to get

actual work done.

yes systemd is Broken by design
it is so terribly bloated
  whi all this crap,
I want to keep my system as simple as possible
it is like a religious mission trying to force it upon everybody.
and systemd require rebooting unless the component being upgraded is the
kernel

This leads to
gnu Linux becoming the laughing stock of Windows fans

I think Mate, as packaged in Ubuntu-mate spin, would meet Trisquel's
accessibility requirement; have used Ubuntu-Mate Trusty, Utopic, and Vivid.

A 4gb tarball wouldn't be any easier for anyone to download than an ISO,
and windows users wouldn't know what to do with it. Everyone can atleast burn
an
ISO to DVD (as they do with all their pirated games) and access the files
even if they don't know how to mount an iso.

Please don't use the word pirated.  That is the enemy's propaganda term.

I'd like them to give me that negative feedback to my face.

Then see how they like the response.

Here, a game I worked on for free if you'd like, in 1 convenient file.

Complaints (such as you're a dictator!)

I'd like to see them say that shit to me to my face.

You know, it's fine to not care if people play the game, but you're clearly
going out of your way to announce the game on various places. Do you not see
the contradiction?

Hey guys, play my game!

WTF? A 4.4 GB ISO? I'm not downloading that!

Whatever, I don't care if you play it.

It's even worse when you act offended by people complaining that what you've
provided it too inconvenient to download. I don't know which is really true,
but if you do care whether people play your game (as I would), you should
take steps to make it as easy as possible for people to do so, and if you
don't, you should stop acting so offended when people give you negative
feedback.

I don't want to do it, I'm not going to. It would be a bother to me and this
is a game that is ment to be packaged with the maps. The whole reason of
making the distribution in the beginning was to get around the censorship in
Xonotic forums of the maps (every time a map was posted they deleted the post
because they didn't like opinions of author, now ALL the maps I made (50+)
are downloaded 7K times vs a handful of times for each map prior). Anyone
that wants separate stuff can get it from the git repos. Once in awhile
seperate pk3s are uploaded, but this is once in a great while.

Honestly, most opensource communites are similar to repressive communist
dictatorships. They'd jail anyone not progressive if they could, and have
said so many times to me atleast. They also were sure to forward complaints
about things that had been _said_ to european police agencies, hoping to have
me jailed if I ever went to whatever feminist/leftists nanny state they
reported to. What they can do now is ban and delete and that is what they do.
It does not matter what you make, it matters what you believe.

Be it Debian or Nexuiz / Xonotic, that's who those people are.
