You can use a dock and have a pretty Windows-style desktop

Personally I find it easier to customise LXDE, and I find KDE TDE more
customiseable.

The panel+nautilus, at the very least, certainly formed a shell though (which
way why Nautilus couldn't be replaced and why Caja can't be replaced in
MATE).

I used many DEs but nothing comes close to the XFCE environment!!!
Fast, easy to use and customize, lightweight, beautiful.
There is no other DE but Xfce! :)

Still find gnome fallback surprisingly good and easy to customize. It is now
my desktop of choice. I like the fact that it is compatible with unity's
indicator applications.

I still prefer the panels because that's what I have always used for the past
several years. That and I don't want something too heavy because it will
drain the battery faster. Something simple like the screenshot below is
sufficient.

Thanks for looking that up for us Magic. By the time Ubuntu 16.04 comes out,
MATE will hopefully be 1.12 and above and be a viable option for Trisquel.

GNOME Flashback is officially supported. I get the impression that there are
only one or two active developers, but it's not like it's just rotting in a
forgotten repository.

Magic Banana, you can say that again.

According to Pottering and Kay Sievers (systemd developers), their end game
is to have systemd be a complete OS. Even Linus had to block all code
contributions from Kay because they were trying to hardwire the kernel to
require systemd. You can search the net for all of this. Latest news, is
they are working on systemd also becoming a bootloader (Gummiboot), to make
the system more secure of course.. Again, search it.

Magic Banana, you can say that again.

Sure: The actual init system does not matter to GNOME or to the future MATE.
systemd is an umbrella project that is more than an init system.
systemd-logind is a component that manages user logins and seats and works
with any init system.

According to Pottering and Kay Sievers (systemd developers), their end game
is to have systemd be a complete OS.

No. They have an opinion on designing a good operating system. Many people
do. What would that even mean for systemd to be a complete OS? Will it soon
include a desktop environment? A Web browser? Games?

Even Linus had to block all code contributions from Kay because they were
trying to hardwire the kernel to require systemd.

No. The (digital) fight relates to the keyword debug that can be passed in
argument of the kernel boot line. That keyword was supposed to be generic,
i.e., it could be used outside the kernel. Kay Sievers used to it for systemd
but the debug mode of systemd was logging so many lines that it would even
prevent the kernel from booting. That is all (and it is bad enough!). There
is no conspiracy theory to hardwire the kernel to require systemd. The
problem does not even have anything to do with the Linux's code.

Latest news, is they are working on systemd also becoming a bootloader
(Gummiboot)

No. Gummiboot has absolutely nothing to do with systemd (besides sharing
developers). Guess what? It can even boot Windows! The bootloader loads a
kernel. The kernel loads the init (pid 1). In other words, the bootloader
never interacts with the init system. Ever.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Amazon AWS

I would prefer neither. Why cut down trees, possibly fill in marshlands, and
give up wonderful farm-land so that people can watch the newest episode of
Keeping up with the Kardashians!?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Amazon AWS

2015-06-16 Thread danigaritarojas
What?! They actually build this non-sense on top of perfectly fertile land?
Now that's a real sin! Open spaces should be for people to recreate, trees to
produce oxygen, give birds a home and shade for people, and any fertile
ground to grow food and feed all of them. That's true harmony with nature.
Not to destroy everything so then you can build something that's slightly
better than what you could build until that moment (like an Oil well).

I hope that what you're saying is the truth, because even though this isn't
related with computers at all. I'm now really mad with amazon.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Amazon AWS

2015-06-16 Thread superbyelich
I haven't seen the land myself, so I don't know exactly, but we are a very
rural area, and most of it is populated by Marshlands, Farmlands, and water.
For 900 Acres to be populated with a solar far, the only assumption I can
come up with is that those types of lands will be used. Now, it IS current
property owners who are leasing the land to Amazon, and apparently it's only
a 30 year lease. (Just found more info on it.) So I guess that could be
ok... though leases can be renewed, of course...
