Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?
We can not and must not believe anything this dude Todd says. He's obviously a deluded, unethical opportunist. His claims have absolutely no value at all. He has earned some money with the Librem 15. But that's it. The fiesta hopefully and very probably ends here for Todd. The librem 13 funding ends in a few days and he hasn't collected but 1/3 of the money. The reason is, I think and hope, finally people have seen it clearly beyond his nonsense and bs delusions. As I already said, the true problem with people and projects like this Todd dude and the Purism is that all this money could have been employed to advance (financially and consequently de facto technically) true libre projects like the libreboot community and gluglug.
Re: [Trisquel-users] C.H.I.P Hardware Design online
It won't be the first (eg. there is https://www.olimex.com/Products/OLinuXino/A10/A10-OLinuXino-LIME/). But a more important point, it will probably not be freedom respecting hardware either. As far as I know there is no freedom respecting Realtek wifi that has 802.11n support.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
A quick search for Acer Inspire One on h-node brings up no results, so any hardware feedback you have would be greatly appreciated :)

That's for sure but Allwinner seems to have quite a bad reputation when it comes to actually releasing code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't get Mate to work in my Trisquel (7), can anybody help?
I wasn't able to install cinnamon, and I gave up trying all the desktop environment. Installing gnome 3 was enough for me, and it works very good. I know some people here installed some other DE, but I always had issues. Only enlightenment and xfce worked good enough to keep it. I recommend you should restore a clean system before installing the desired DE via the official repos. Everytime I added a PPA I had some issues.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
A question about kernels, what are linux-generic-headers packages, and why are they sometimes held back when I run sudo apt-get upgrade? Apparently they're used to build third-party modules for your kernel. Sometimes you need to dist-upgrade instead. From the manual page of apt-get(8): upgrade upgrade is used to install the newest versions of all packages currently installed on the system from the sources enumerated in /etc/apt/sources.list. Packages currently installed with new versions available are retrieved and upgraded; under no circumstances are currently installed packages removed, or packages not already installed retrieved and installed. New versions of currently installed packages that cannot be upgraded without changing the install status of another package will be left at their current version. An update must be performed first so that apt-get knows that new versions of packages are available. dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; apt-get has a smart conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. So, dist-upgrade command may remove some packages. The /etc/apt/sources.list file contains a list of locations from which to retrieve desired package files. See also apt_preferences(5) for a mechanism for overriding the general settings for individual packages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
FWIW I'm on 64 bit Trisquel 6. Abrowser 39 + NoScript - Gnash. Very solid experience, as always.
Re: [Trisquel-users] H.265 video will cause more freedom issues than H.264
There is also http://libwebpjs.appspot.com/vp8/webm-javascript-decoder/ and dash.js is also an option for adaptive streaming. I've not used any of them though so can't make a recommendation but it seems that every browser is covered with free codecs is all I wanted to point out. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
I have set up a website (with my own personal server machine). Unfortunately, it runs on a Raspberry Pi, which isn't the 100% free software friendly solution to do this. Replacing the Raspberry with a similar, more free software friendly system is on my to-do list. Trisquel is definitely getting a mention on my website in the links section. The site has a very retro-look however (due to my limited connection speed). I have created a pixelart, lowcolor rendition of the logo. Is anyone interested in using it? (2-colors, 30x30 pixels)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't get Mate to work in my Trisquel (7), can anybody help?
You mean reinstall my system?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
It just means the module won't be automatically loaded. (Unless required by some other module.) There should be no freedom implications since all the modules in Trisquel are free.

Did you use this PPA for Trisquel 7 and follow the directions? https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mate-dev/+archive/ubuntu/trusty-mate PPA description These MATE 1.8.1 packages for *only* Ubuntu Trusty, they have been side ported from Debian. In order to correctly install and configure MATE 1.8.1 on Ubuntu Trusty you will also need to add the following PPA: ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa Open a terminal complete the following steps to enable the appropriate PPAs and install MATE 1.8.1 on Ubuntu Trusty. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/trusty-mate sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-mate-core ubuntu-mate-desktop
Re: [Trisquel-users] H.265 video will cause more freedom issues than H.264
Most of these have either been abandoned and/or not updated in years. Kinda sucks that WebM is still not a big priority as I would like to build sites for either myself or clients that I can do without MP4 entirely and just serve WebM.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Plasma Mobile
I can't recall any other mobile OS than Android that works on so many different devices. Even if a free mobile OS runs only on a single model of a single brand it is still a Free mobile OS and a valuable asset to the community.

Re: [Trisquel-users] C.H.I.P Hardware Design online
Are you sure it's not a Soc? On http://nextthing.co/ they claim: C.H.I.P. does computer things. Work in LibreOffice and save your documents to C.H.I.P.’s onboard storage. Surf the web and check your email over wifi. Play games with a bluetooth controller. With dozens of applications and tools preinstalled, C.H.I.P. is ready to do computer things the moment you power it on!
Re: [Trisquel-users] C.H.I.P Hardware Design online
It's not a SoC, just a board, like many other boards with some free design files. After reading https://olimex.wordpress.com/2015/06/05/how-to-get-in-the-news-tell-people-that-you-will-make-and-sell-something-which-cost-you-20-for-9/, I assume it won't be sufficiently available to be useful to recommend to others. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] C.H.I.P Hardware Design online
Oh, I almost forgot to mention this blog post from Free Electrons: http://free-electrons.com/blog/free-electrons-chip-nextthing/ Free Electrons is also very excited to be working with NextThing Co on this project! Thanks to this, over the next months, we will have a very substantial amount of time dedicated to this project, and we will regularly push code to support the missing hardware Allwinner SoC hardware blocks in the mainline Linux kernel and to support the C.H.I.P. board. They also describe some more details about the board: * Availability planned for 2016 for the general public. A selection of 1000 kernel hackers who backed on Kickstarter will have the platform earlier. * Very small platform: 40mm x 60mm, making is even smaller than a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone. * Allwinner R8 processor, clocked at 1 Ghz, and offering OpenGL/OpenVG acceleration through an ARM Mali GPU * 512 MB of RAM * 4GB of on-board NAND flash storage * WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 to connect the system to the outside world * One USB host port * Powered through a micro USB connector which also supports USB OTG (either USB host or device). * Jack connector for composite video out, headphones and microphone input. * Many headers to connect external devices (SPI, I2C, UART + 8 GPIOs) * Integrated circuit for charging a LiPo battery and being powered by it * Additional HDMI or VGA add-on boards will be needed to connect to displays with the corresponding connectivity.
[Trisquel-users] I wish to buy Lemote Yeeloong 8101B notebook
Hi ! I am interested where would it still be possible to buy a Lemote Yeeloong 8101B notebook. I am also interested to obtain one from a second hand. Available are various methods of payment (Wire, Paypal, Bitcoin...) I live in Europe. Please send me a private message to discuss the options further. Thanks, Jan
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Why has it not been included in Trisquel 7? Stability problems? Nonfree dependencies? Other? Metacity is the default window manager. The default install normally comes with one application per task. The question therefore becomes why does Trisquel 6 comes with both Metacity and Compiz?. I do not have the answer.

Thanks for the help guys but I just decided to use Gnome 3. Sasaki thanks a lot!

I do not know where to get one, but maybe you are interested in buying a Gluglug Libreboot X200, which as far as I know, is the more freedom respecting computer model available (see the link; I do not sell them).
[Trisquel-users] Erro (initramfs)
Buenas, pessoal! Hoje ao ligar minha máquina Trisquel, me deparei com a seguinte mensagem e não foi carregado o sistema: BusyBox v1.21.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands Alguém já passou por isso?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Erro (initramfs)
Hey Dausacker, glad to see you here mate. If you want to cut a long story short, skip the next paragraph. (For those who don't know where we know ourselves: Dausacker presented a series of talks about GNU+Linux-libre Trisquel here in Brazil. Besides, I, he, and many others from Brazil, have kept following the free software philosophy, while 75% of the so called free software activists here in Brazil steered towards the open source software development model for many years. And those who do follow the free software philosophy are now trying to tell the others to put things back on track, or to assume that these so-called free software activists are not really for the free software philosophy.) Basically, Dausacker is greeting us and telling that, when booting his GNU+Linux-libre Trisquel installation, he encountered this: BusyBox v1.21.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands And he is asking if any of us have encountered the same problem. Note for Dausacker (en-US): If you want, send me an email with your next messages if you want them to be translated. Don't use Google Translate because it's a service as a software substitute (SaaSS). Note for Dausacker (pt-BR): Se quiser, envie-me um e-mail com tuas próximas mensagens se quiser que elas sejam traduzidas. Re: [Trisquel-users] Many applications can't connect to when OpenVPN is activated
And your point is? Even if they were nefarious, wouldn't they want to let my internet traffic work so they could spy on me as you are insinuating? Regardless that doesn't address my issue. Is there a setting in Trisquel that I need to change to get applications by default to utilize a VPN?
Re: [Trisquel-users] H.265 video will cause more freedom issues than H.264
The bitstream has been frozen for years. That makes any decoder based on the frozen bitstream remains compatible even through future encoder versions as long as the bitstream doesn't change (and it hasn't - it's been frozen.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icecat not compatible with Trisquel site?
You are entitled to your opinion of course SuperTramp83, but I believe both the time and effort are well spent. I have spent a bit of time recently (and I will spend some more) sending messages to a number of people I know who create libre server software, or run free culture websites, encouraging them to tag their scripts with license and link to source, as recommended by the FSF. If websites are going to run software on my machine, without explicitly asking my permission first, I want that software to be libre. Not probably, definitely. Ideally, all client-side scripts would prompt the user for permission the first time they use a website before they run, and would indicate in that prompt the license covering the source code in the scripts.
[Trisquel-users] C.H.I.P Hardware Design online
The C.H.I.P hardware design is now available under a Creative Commons license: https://github.com/NextThingCo/CHIP-Hardware As far as I understand it, this would be the first completely open hardware SoC once Linux kernel support is implemented. If this is correct, it's just awesome!

Yeah that high-blooded Darlene haha! Show's legit though, I think. Probably the best one of it's kind.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I'm using IceCat on Trisquel 7 now. It mostly runs ok if I keep LibreJS turned off, but it still crashes from time to time. If I actually want to get some work done without periodic browser crashes, I have to go back to my Trisquel 6 install. Browser crashes in Trisquel 6 Come to think of it, I have had the occasional browser crash problem on Trisquel 6 too. It usually happens when I have a *lot* of tabs open, and usually has something to do with sites serving scripts that freeze up (dialog pops up to let me stop them). It tends to happen when I've been using my laptop for a long time, so I used to think it was due to overheating, but I was recently given a really good USB fan base, and it still happens with that. I think in Trisquel 6 it probably is out-of-memory problems triggered by JavaScript bloatware.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
What does it mean for a driver module to be blacklisted? What are the implications (eg for software freedom) of removing a driver module from the blacklist?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't get Mate to work in my Trisquel (7), can anybody help?
Why do we need a PPA to install mate when it is available in the repos? Check Synaptic Package Manager.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't get Mate to work in my Trisquel (7), can anybody help?
I don't know about that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Thanks again lembas, I'll have a go at upgrading my kernel. A question about kernels, what are linux-generic-headers packages, and why are they sometimes held back when I run sudo apt-get upgrade? Magic Banana, thanks for the clarification about Compiz. Why has it not been included in Trisquel 7? Stability problems? Nonfree dependencies? Other? I'm just testing Trisquel 7 with my external flat-screen display (Dell), which plugged into my Acer (see above) via VGA. Still using Metacity. The performance is actually just the same as on 6. Using the Display applet in System Settings, the Dell has 4 resolution options available, the built-in screen has 2. If I set the built-in screen to the lesser of the two options (800x600 4:3), and the Dell to the second highest option (1152x864 4:3), everything seems to work ok. I can only use the best option on the Dell (1280x1024 5:4) if I turn off the built-in screen completely. I can use the best option on the built-in screen (1024x600 16:9), which is better for the shape of the screen, but I have to change the Dell down to 1024x768 4:3. If I try to put both screens on the better option, or change the built-in screen up without changing the Dell down the desktops are visible, but display response slows to a crawl. I'm assuming that's because either my CPU or graphics chips are not up to the job, but I'd love to discover I'm wrong about that :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Plasma Mobile
Sounds like a KDE fork of the UbuntuPhone (http://www.ubuntu.com/phone). KubuntuPhone? In theory it would be possible to create a TrisquelPhone, by stripping all the nonfree components out of UbuntuPhone, just like what's done to Ubuntu to create Trisquel. The problems would be the same as for Replicant; it would only run on a handful of devices (whichever kinds the TrisquelPhone developers had to benchmark against), and would be fiendishly complex to install, even for those of us who have got comfortable with install GNU+Linux on ex-Windows PCs. The FSF has a campaign to gather information about efforts to restore full software freedom to Android/Linux devices: https://fsfe.org/campaigns/android/android.html What would be really sick is if somebody could provide some simple instructions for hacking an iThing and replacing iOS with a libre OS. I think whipping out a liberated iThing at tech events would definitely make a statement ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Give me recommendations about a video sharing site.
Are any of you familiar with Plumi? It's Plone-based server software for video-hosting sites. It's licensed under GPL (probably should be AGPL but...): http://blog.plumi.org/ It was created in 2007 to run engagemedia.org (Australia-based activist video-hosting site) but there are a number of other sites already using Plumi for their own purposes: http://blog.plumi.org/sites-using-plumi/ They still need to tag their scripts for compatibility with LibreJS, but no doubt that's underway (or soon will be).
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
this looks promising, hopefully it will be fixed in a future update from upstream. But personally, I didn't experience this problem on a machine running Lubuntu with all the newest updates...
