[Trisquel-users] Is there any privacy issue in updating search engines?

2015-08-19 Thread lap4fsf
If you look at the package helper for Abrowser, (Precisely at
https://devel.trisquel.info/aklis/package-helpers/blob/19986870ff5da83f3d92ba35e9ebbfeb9cb3ea9a/helpers/DATA/firefox/settings.js
@lines 142 and 143.) autoupdation of search engines are disabled.

This means the user won't get the latest search results (if any, the updated
search engine has included), unless (s)he edits the configuration editor of
web browsers.

Can anybody explain me why this feature is turned off? I am seeing it
something related to user privacy/freedom in the respective documentation.

Please keep in mind the fact that Richard Stallman does not regard Search
Engines as SaaSS when you comment on the topic.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?

2015-08-19 Thread chaosesqueteam
Have you looked into russian CPUs and chipsets? It seems they're getting back
into the biz with their edbrus processors.

Perhaps they would be willing to make a "no bullshit" no backdoors processor?

Though they're still on larger gate sizes.

It's obvious that the signed CPU programs are backdoors for the government we
live under. Just read the (mis)"features" openly touted in intels manuals.

We are just cattle, not the owners, so we may not have any privacy nor own
anything truely. Also what we do have must be taken away (see systemd, and
other projects that kick people (men) out for having the "wrong" beliefs
(This was __not__ the libre nor opensource way, this is new)). IE: Depreciate
all our working projects that are fairly simple to learn, replace with
monoliths that are complex and obsolete our knowlege (so we won't beable to
figure out how to secure it) and keep any honest people out via code of
conduct.

When people say words about you, do you ever wish to fight them IRL?

Thanks for all the replies! I ended up having to do a reinstall and marking
apt to keep the current kernel and ignore the update.

Totally happy with Trisquel otherwise! I've got a System 76 Meerkat on the
way which I plan on installing Trisquel on as well. Hopefully I won't run
into hardware issues but part of the fun is getting it to work right? >_<

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?

2015-08-19 Thread chris
Actually- yes in reference to the Russian CPU question. It's something like
$5,000 a CPU for several year old tech. Utterly unrealistic. Maybe future
versions will be cheaper, and a real possibility, but not currently.

As far as the last question. No, not really, I'm not a violent person. I
don't even wish anyone to see anybody held against there will as this too is
a form of violence.

Indeed it is! :)

You might want to try the newer hardware stacks. Or the newer jxself kernels.

Re: [Trisquel-users] ClamAV fails to detect malware

2015-08-19 Thread amenex

Nothing to do with ClamAV, 'cuz it's a Mozilla/linux feature.

It's related to a Mozilla bug:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209501 ... They've been working
on it since 2003 ...

In one of my Trisquel PC's, on which I haven't yet started consolidating
emails, I found two emails with no subject, no headers, and no body but with
the 12/31/1969 date as the only information, associated with folders in which
the latest entries were both related to the changing of passwords, one for
this Trisquel forum and the other for my McAfee antivirus (used on the WinXP
OS on my laptop).

Evidently, folks in the linux community have been using linux's zero-time
glitch to make/modify admin passwords with some sort of trickery:

http://www.codejourneymen.com/content/adding-admin-user-drupal-site-without-overwriting-admin-user
https://books.google.com/books?id=tj0-8ctawTsC&pg=PA108&lpg=PA108&dq=password+12/31/1969#v=onepage&q=password%2012%2F31%2F1969&f=false

Search on "password 12/31/1969" and you'll see how ubiquitous this problem
is.

Finding where this mysterious phantom email resides is another matter having
nothing to do with malware.

Call it dateware, if you will.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Software Updater proceeds without authentication

2015-08-19 Thread amenex
It's still doing it (on a "security" upgrade today) even though I commented
out the following line(s):

// Automatically upgrade packages from these (origin:archive) pairs
// Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins {
//  "${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-security";
//  "${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates";
//  "${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-proposed";
//  "${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-backports";
};

Happens on another PC, also running Trisquel 7, in spite of the same
commenting to 50unattended-upgrades.

Doesn't matter whether the PC has been restarted after the change or not.

No, it does not. It means the browser will not "automatically check for
updates to search plugins":
http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries#Browser.

The search plugins are what populates your search bar:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Bar

Whatever you write in it, it is sent to the related search engine that is
constantly updated.

Well, sure you get that output. The dependencies required to run bitmask
demand a version of both debian and buguntu of a more recent state than
Trisquel 6 which is based on 12.04.

You will need to upgrade your system.
cheers!

Re: [Trisquel-users] ClamAV fails to detect malware

2015-08-19 Thread amenex
If one could "copy" emails from Icedove's "search" results into a destination
folder and then manually delete them with the search-results popup, then the
problem of generating phantom emails that have the 12/31/1969 date in the
destination folder would be solved, but one cannot do so. There is only a
"move" function, and that is what is broken. The Mozilla bug describes this,
just as I observed in my original posting.

I also noticed that while performing "search and move" operations in Icedove
that obtained large numbers of hits (from tens to thousands) the move would
repeat itself from one to three times, resulting in a count of emails moved
that was a corresponding multiple of the number of emails actually moved. of
course, we can now deduce that the extra X*(n - 1) emails were in fact
phantom emails. Such phantom emails do not accumulate in any one destination;
they just disappear into one master phantom, The Phantom. That is confirmed
when the search and delete function finds a hundred hits or so, but only one
The Phantom ends up visible in the trash folder.

As these phantoms have a source in dateware rather than malware, we probably
don't have to worry about them any more.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Is there any privacy issue in updating search engines?

2015-08-19 Thread lcerf
Search plugins are great. Many pages with a search field relate to a search
plugin that can be added to the search bar. For instance, you can visit
http://www.openstreetmap.org and add the related search plugin by clicking on
the arrow at the left of the search bar and choose "Add OpenStreetMap
search". Afterwards, you need not load http://www.openstreetmap.org to make a
search on this site anymore. You can directly search OpenStreetMap from the
search bar.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there any privacy issue in updating search engines?

2015-08-19 Thread grandizo
Openstreetmap plugin is useful but it has one weakness - it uses http
connection by defaut. It is always better to use the secure connection when
available. You can fix this by using the following instructions.

- Close IceCat
- Open the configuration file
$HOME/.mozilla/icecat/.default/searchplugins/openstreetmap.xml by
using a text editor and replace http with https on row 6.

- Start IceCat and test Openstreetmap plugin again

Re: [Trisquel-users] Five nights at freddies for trisquel?

2015-08-19 Thread mcz

From a practical point of view, if a free alternative doesn't exist yet,
it might be possible to run a Trisquel instance inside KVM which would run
the game in Wine or something like that.

The point here is to sandbox the game so that any kind of data leak would
theoretically lead nowhere.

You might need to replace the wifi card. System76 has or does ship with cards
that depend on a non-free firmware component that Trisquel will not support.

The Meerkat uses an "Intel Wireless AC". I'm guessing there's no free driver
