[Trisquel-users] GPG versions
Hello Why do I have GPG version 1.4.11 in Trisquel 6? Why do I see GPG version 1.4.16 in a Trisquel 7? Are those versions secure? Why don't they update to 1.4.19? Or why don't they upgrade to GPG version 2?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
Thanks for the reply. Forgive my ignorance, but what is TPB?

Intetesting. What about library utilized services such as Overdrive and Zinio?
[Trisquel-users] Re : GPG versions
Install the package gpgv2 for GPG 2.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
It's cause of Mozilla's change to not let third party add ons get installed. It seems Abrowser wasn't sufficiently modified from Firefox to avoid this. File a bug please.
Re: [Trisquel-users] GPG versions
Security problems, if there are any, are commonly backported by the distro maintainers (those running Ubuntu) to the older versions. Trisquel gets those via its usual update process. So don't worry about the version numbers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
"TPB" would be The Pirate Bay, if I'm not mistaken.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
Yup, you got it.
[Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
I have a fresh install of Trisquel Mini. Out of the box Abrowser is blocking add-ons from its own add-on repository and I am not seeing any type of option to address this. Every time I try to install an add-on I get the following: "Abrowser prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer" The only option I can find that is close would be the "warn me when sites try to install add-ons", which is off. Any ideas? This seems to be exceedingly weird behavior out of the box.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
I think I figured out part of the problem. The dd if=foo.iso of=/dev/bar command does not set efi by default

Prof. Moglen talked about proprietary software in cars, voting machines, and a few other things. http://ralphnaderradiohour.com/2015/10/04/eben-moglen-paul-hudson/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
Yes. But you need to use an external program to download the xpi, or otherwise you need to modify the browser so that it doesn't automatically try to install .xpi files. I suggested using wget; that's what I used when installing the Random Agent Spoofer extension.

^ ay, ay, ay. Viejito! I'm really very disappointed with your style lately. Where is the boldness, where the improbable yet realistic "trolliness" of language and semantics? I can't recognize you anymore.. x_x ciao viejitooo!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
I had that problem. With dd I can't boot LiveUSB, it boots with Libreboot only. And if I create LiveUSB with Trisquel's USB boot tool, it won't boot with Libreboot, but boots with proprietary BIOS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
Thats the thing, if I make the live USB in trisquels disk utility it works. I just am trying to figure out why dd isn't working...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
Are talking about a little grey box that pops us when you try to install an extension? If so, there is a button in the lower right hand corner that says "allow".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Just some Simple Trisquel Propaganda
I'm pretty sure that card was meant for the potential new Triskello developers (people with a degree in CS, also known as counter-strike), not for me you and other 16565 ordinary plain users who would indeed "flood it with inquiries" and whose act of contacting Trisquel makes no sense at all..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
So, a follow up to my initial question... How is a Libre OS ever going to go mainstream if the only options for basic streaming and entertainment are illegal ones?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
I never had the issue but if I remember correctly Onpon4 claimed that one can easily circumvent this by downloading the .xpi (or whatever the extension is - I don't remember) and then installing it manually. Go to preferences - addons- extensions - click on the "mixer square icon" on top - install addon from file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
Overdrive & Zinio both require proprietary software and are encumbered by digital locks. You can remove the DRM from their books, but it's illegal. (I use Calibre to remove DRM from my e-books. TPB also has a fair amount of e-books.)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
It could be a barrier, but it's not something we can fix. These services use digital restriction mechanisms, so we can't possibly read the video files they send; they're encrypted. Even if we could come up with a way to read the encrypted videos they send, it would be illegal for us to do so thanks to laws like the DMCA. (The same is true of most video DVDs, by the way, whose encryption scheme -- CSS -- has been cracked). And they would be able to change the encryption almost instantly, making our efforts useless. Personally, I think copyright should be abolished. The only good thing it does these days is copyleft, and I think the good of copyleft is less than the bad of other uses of copyright. (The FSF and RMS don't agree with me on this, but they do think the duration of copyright should be substantially shortened, which would also be helpful.) Perhaps more urgently, digital restriction mechanisms ought to be illegal, rather than legally enforced.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
> Go to preferences - addons- extensions - click on the "mixer square icon" on top - install addon from file. Or drag the .xpi onto a browser window.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing on computer with SSD and HDD
I understand clearly, but the amount I've listed are quite more than enough (/boot), it is overdimensioned. And the others are what the disks are capable. There's no inconvinient on these 3 or 4 partitioning. Using more partitioning would be possibly a problem on dimensioning kind.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
As far as I can tell the korora will not boot from a USB unless it's set up for efi.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
So I guess now the question is how to use dd for efi boot...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
what iso are you using?

[Trisquel-users] Problem with VLC disconnecting from live streams
I've tried checking the boxes for "Continuous stream" and "Auto re-connect" in the options, but I still find VLC disconnects me from http live streams somewhat frequently and I have to manually reload every time. Does anyone have any suggestions (for vlc options or other players I could try)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midori won't open some websites because of security certificate problems
I have always used mozilla ff based browsers due to its amazing (the few I use) addons. I have used briefly dillo, which is vry fast and lightweight. Maybe give that one a try too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midori won't open some websites because of security certificate problems
I haven't found Midori to be "buggy". The only reason I don't use it is some Firefox extensions I like having with no equivalents in Midori (namely UnPlug, HTTPS Everywhere, and now the Random Agent Spoofer), and the fact that user scripts don't work when normal JavaScript is disabled (which prevents me from using ViewTube and LinkTube). Honestly, if Midori just fixed the user scripts problem, it wouldn't take much for me to switch to it. Midori is a great browser, easily my second choice after Firefox-based browsers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser blocking add-on installation
I don't get how is that on a Trisquel-mini fresh install abrowser would say such a thing as it comes with Midori.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midori won't open some websites because of security certificate problems
Yes,i will change my browser. Which lightweight one is good? I've had a look at Dooble and XXXTerm and also at Qupzilla, but i haven't tried any of them out.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No space in "boot"
so what?
Re: [Trisquel-users] No space in "boot"
How do I change the size of it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] would anyone know of any online classes that i could learn more about linux?
> Although i am curious what you meant by unnecessary bloat... Mostly just that you're adding another higher-level programming language on top of the "console" software only for the purpose of giving it more limited functionality. It doesn't do anything useful. It's better to just have a high-level library that takes care of some things for you (without trying to create an unnecessary analogy or include artificial bounds to what games can do). That's what the SGE Game Engine does. Also Love2d, Cocos2D, Godot Engine, and GDevelop.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
Bill Gates, can't be a good person. The only thing that Microsoft did good is Microsoft Comfort Keyboard.
[Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
As everyone knows, I am fairly new here (to trisquel and to Libre Software in general). My question, were do Netflix and Hulu fall in the grand scheme of libre software? (I am thinking netflix is not due to the silverlight/pipelight requirement.) If they are not permitted, what alternatives do others use?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
Hulu and Netflix both require proprietary software and have DRM. I use Popcorn Time, TPB, and DVDs for my movies and TV shows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] would anyone know of any online classes that i could learn more about linux?
Python is great for a lot of things. Command-line applications, GUI applications, batch scripts, server software, games, etc. Python has pretty good support for all of it. Another good reason to learn Python is that it has a large beginner community, which makes it easy to find other people on the same path as you to get help. Those are some of the reasons Python is very popular in free software circles. I use the Godot engine to make games. If you don't mind learning a more domain-specific language, I heartily recommend Godot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
I think you mean NSA/Micro$$soft Bugindows Snooping edition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
That's exactly what I stated in my post. The Gates Foundation does some good (funding vaccine research for example) and some bad (working with Monsanto for example). Nothing in this world is purely good and nothing is purely bad. Everything has two sides.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
LoL, yes, something like that!
[Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
Live USBs made with the dd command work fine for my desktop but not the Korora I got from Think Penguin... Any ideas what the problem could be?
Re: [Trisquel-users] No space in "boot"
mine is 500 mb. I'm using 70 mb of it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB made with dd not booting on Korora Laptop
You probably forgot to select in the BIOS to boot from USB.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
No definetly not Libre in any sense. Use propritary software to run, the code they send is propritary and is one of the worst examples of DRM. I can see the appeal of a platform like that (it is a rented library I suppose) but there are so many issues presented.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
https://defectivebydesign.org/netflix As long as I'm treated like cattle and a criminal by the entertainment industry I will not give them a dime. And I will not give them free publicity either by downloading their stuff from unauthorized 3rd parties either. Re: [Trisquel-users] No space in "boot"
And I don't ever have to worry about this sort of thing because all 500 GB of my drive go to /. (I also have 10 GB swap). I never understood the appeal of separate partitions- IMLTHO they just tend to cause problems like this. On the other hand, having a separate /home would be nice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel on a MacBook Air.
I write Android programs quite a bit (school forces us to- apparently mobile development is the trendy new thing) and have experienced no problems using OpenJDK as opposed to Oracle. They recommend Oracle, but Open seems to work fine- except when it comes to things which need to be jarsigned.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser greys out certain images
I can't reproduce this problem with either Iceweasel, Midori, or Chromium. It's probably a plugin or something that's causing the problem. Try flushing out your configs and see if it works with the vanilla setup.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Just some Simple Trisquel Propaganda
I don't see why we should be contacting Trisquel- I'm sure they don't want to be flooded with inquiries. I think something along the lines of 'Liberate Your Computer! Get Trisquel Today!' would be better, with relevant URLs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I moved my DE to XFCE! How does one safely remove old GNOME parts?
Bad plan. Had a similar situation on my Debian box recently- I installed GNOME shell to try it out, decided that not only did I hate it, but it also eats RAM on a vicious scale and takes minutes to load things. So I tried removing gnome and then autoremoving, but other applications must still have been holding all the dependencies. Nothing was available for autoremove even after I removed gnome-core, gnome-shell, gnome-utils, and gnome, so I resorted to a purge of gnome*. It inexplicably removed Jitsi and Chromium, and left me with about 500 MB of useless GNOME libraries lying around anyway, and GNOME things clogging up my autostart services. A nightmare. I had to manually go through and remove lots of stuff. On the plus side, LibreOffice now displays properly with GTK3 (for some reason).
Re: [Trisquel-users] I moved my DE to XFCE! How does one safely remove old GNOME parts?
> unfortunately I don't document my customizations (to my own frustration > sometimes) Same here. I really should start writing things down instead of mindlessly hacking away with apt and dpkg.
