Re: [Trisquel-users] Penguin Adelie GNU / Linux Laptop
If it's to your liking and the price is rihgt, why don't you get it, install Ubuntu 16.04 without adding non-free repositories or firmware. When Trisquel 8 Flidas comes out, install that and wipe your Ubuntu.
[Trisquel-users] Penguin Adelie GNU / Linux Laptop
Hi, everyone!!! I'm pretty new in the free software world.Right now I'm using (testing) Trisquel in a Virtual Machine and I love the system. I'm really happy about it. So now I'm considering to buy a new laptop and I realize, it is not so easy. The most demanding software that I will use is Blender. The recommended hardware for blender: 64-bit quad core CPU, 8 GB RAM, OpenGL 3.2 compatible graphics with 2 GB RAM. After a little research I think that the "Penguin Adelie GNU / Linux Laptop" by Think Penguin is a good option. https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-adelie-gnu-linux-laptop But this laptop it is not yet supported by Trisquel (Notes from the website: "Other popular distributions such as Trisquel are not yet supported, but will be as distributions release newer versions built off newer software stacks.") I contacted the sales department of Think penguin and they told me that they don't know exactly when this laptop will be supported by Trisquel. Maybe 6 month to a year... Does anyone have an idea when Trisquel will be supported by the Penguin Adelie GNU / Linux Laptop? Or do you know a good alternative to this laptop with similar features? Thank you very much
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
Here is step by step guide to "Trisquelize" any ubuntu distro: 1. First you always want to do a back up: GUI: Back in Time http://backintime.le-web.org/download_page/ Command line: rsync https://rsync.samba.org/ 2.- Now download Trisquel, and MD5 file: https://trisquel.info/es/download 3.- Check that your download was not compromised: a) put your ISO file and your MD5 file on the same directory b) open a terminal within the directory where those files are c) run: md5sum trisquel_7.0_amd64.iso or run: md5sum trisquel-mini_7.0_amd64.iso or whatever name yout iso has d) you must get something like "baf8129a2bf08d6c9c3598a149399165 trisquel-mini_7.0_amd64.iso" compare it with your MD5 file if they match you are ok. If dont, please DO NOT CONTINUE and contact Trisquel. 4.- Deppending on your needs create live-usb or a live-DVD: USB: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/burn-trisquel-cd-images DVD: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/burn-trisquel-cd-images 5.- Reboot your pc and make sure to select to boot from USB or DVD from BIOS deppending on where you put Trisquel. 6.- Before installing anything select the option to verify disk. 7.- If the disk was ok, now you can install Trisquel. 8.- Recommended: Wipe all the OS's that don't respect your freedom: https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html If you have one of these then it is ok: https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html 9.- Recommended: Encrypt your hole hard drive or SSD drive for a more secure Trisquel installation. 10.- Enjoy! Now you have a "Trisquelized" computer, based on Ubuntu but whitout all the bullshit. And you can do it right now :)

very good point. many people don't realize the same thing about openbsd.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using MATE for Trisquel 8 was smart, considering that some say Ubuntu MATE is the best version
I thought gnome-flashback ran on gnome 3? its just made to look like gnome 2. I could be wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using MATE for Trisquel 8 was smart, considering that some say Ubuntu MATE is the best version
gnome-fallback is one of the things I like about trisquel. extremely lightweight and quiet, but still looks nice and doesn't feel like a lite desktop at all. I love how its the only desktop I've used that grsec doesn't automatically break. Even lxde does weird things but this gnome fallback seems to have nothing mysterious going on with it. I always tell people trisquel is like ubuntu without the spyware...lol I also like how trisquel's default setup makes easy transition for windows users.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Whats wrong with openjdk-8?
Thank you! So i guess it is still free software and I can download it without problems
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using MATE for Trisquel 8 was smart, considering that some say Ubuntu MATE is the best version
Quite naturally, Mate is better than Gnome 2, being maintained and having new functionality added. It would be inane to suggest it never evolves or stays frozen in time, although that seems to have been the goal right from the start. How's Mate superior to all other modern desktop environments?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
I think you misunderstand: If such a script existed for a given Ubuntu version then the appropriate version of Trisquel has already been released (notice that the script changes the repositories to point to Trisquel's for example.) So the release of the script and the so-called "Trisquelization" of Ubuntu are actually one and the same and you can't have one without the other. :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] "Ubuntu LTS: Many vulnerabilities despite long-term support"
My understanding is that the Trisquel Helpers are responsible for pulling packages from the appropriate area of Ubuntu and that once integrated into Trisquel they are just in the one repository.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-updates PPA
Yes you are right. For Trisquel 7 it won´t be a good idea. Now yes. And considering than Trisquel 8 (as the previous versions of Trisquel) it won´t update every package included in the repository
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
I don't see the point in such an effort. With the exception of blobs in Linux, Ubuntu already separates proprietary software into designated repositories, so it's possible to run Ubuntu without proprietary software just by replacing Linux with Linux-libre, if that's what you want. The main advantage of Trisquel is it's easy to recommend to others.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Evolution IMAP+: no common encryption algorithm(s)
I use evolution with IMAP and starttls with all of my services. From what you are describing it sounds more like a server configuration issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source cloud storage
Their website says: "Our online solution offers free e-mail address hosting for a wide public in search of a high quality service inspired by a free philosophy and totally independent of all the existing large service companies on the web. The respect for our members' privacy is our priority, which is why we do everything to ensure the security of the data that is entrusted to us." Their Terms of Service doesn't say they may access/they own your data, as some other services do. Technically, you can't verify that Openmailbox doesn't snoop on your data, but you can't do that with *any* cloud service. Openmailbox, however, seems to have a commitment to privacy, so it seems more trust-worthy than other services.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source cloud storage
Chris (Think Penguin) posted about this a year or two ago. If I remember correctly, some people had concerns that were beyond Chris' control (I might have been one of those people). Without suggesting cause and effect, right or wrong ... I don't think anything came of it. It would be cool if Think Penguin did this though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Evolution IMAP+: no common encryption algorithm(s)
No progress regarding Evolution though. Evolution still refuses to connect to the IMAP server - username/password is never in play. I wonder if upgrading Evolution to a later version than in the Trisquel repository would help. How do I do that? Is that safe to do?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who legally owns the Trisquel or 'Asociacion Trisquel'?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Evolution IMAP+: no common encryption algorithm(s)
Ok, a little progress at last, regarding Icedove. There seems to be some kind of problem with the create account wizard. If I write name, mail adress AND password on the first page in the wizard, Icedove (and Thunderbird) will give me a Username/Password error. It didn't help to enter the correct combination again in the manual settings (believe me, I tried many times). The IMAP configuration that was fetched automatically was correct from the start, no changes helped (STARTLS, encrypted password etc). I erased my accounts and started again, this time without entering a password in the wizard. After the wizard finished, I entered the account (and maybe clicked Send/Receive). Icedove asked for my password, which I saved, and suddenly my IMAP account was working without problems. Is this finding something I should report somewhere?

What are the pros and cons regarding privacy and security?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source cloud storage
I would really like to setup a server and run OwnCloud by my self but so far I haven't had the time to compensate for my my lack of knowledge and skills. What can you say about Openmailbox regarding privacy and security? (though the issue is cloud storage!)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source cloud storage
At Openmailbox.org you can 1 GB for free (including your email and cloud)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source cloud storage
I'd recommend ownCloud. IMO it's the most polished and professional fully Free Software cloud storage platform. It's supported by pretty much any device (GNU|Linux, OSX, Windows, Android/Replicant). You can host your own server or use someone else's server (often for a small fee). I like Openmailbox as an ownCloud host-- they have reasonable prices for storage and are dedicated to privacy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using MATE for Trisquel 8 was smart, considering that some say Ubuntu MATE is the best version
How is MATE superior to GNOME 2? Well for one thing it supports GTK+ 3 now. They have been working on a lot of other things too.
[Trisquel-users] Open source cloud storage
I'm using Spideroak sync and backup. They are often endorsed as privacy and security friendly and they might be. But they still have this little black hole of closed software. I just heard of Syncany for the first time. Anyone who knows about it? Do you have other suggestions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
Ubtu = Ubuntu Trisquelize = Transform Ubuntu into Trisquel. Now, it would be, to take the control over Ubuntu to make it Software Libre, step by step. There is a script to older versions that transform Ubuntu to Trisquel. trisquelize.sh: https://trisquel.info/es/wiki/migrar-de-ubuntu-trisquel-sin-reinstalar If it is not possible to update that script to completely liberate Ubuntu now, I am suggesting the script prepare Ubuntu to accept Software Libre by the user (right now), and then, every step to make it libre will be installed every time developers of Trisquel has it ready. Configure Ubuntu to trisquelize it step by step developers require. Instead of releasing whole Trisquel with all the liberation done. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] ¿Which email service do you recommend?
When searching for answers for the same question I ended up with Kolabnow.com. They are amongst the few services that are endorsed time and again by privacy and security techies. They're on the fsf list as well.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
Ok, so let's trisquelize Ubtu, only. But do it right now. It has to be configured since when the user installs Ubtu. Then, developers could make Trisquel libre in a time. It is important to make it easy for the user to choose Trisquel, Software Libre. Thanks.

Stallman discussed this on his personal site back on 4/22/16: https://www.stallman.org/archives/2016-jan-apr.html "The idea of a tool to determine whether a driver's phone was used for text messaging at the time of an accident is fine in principle, but it is almost impossible in practice unless it snoops on a lot more than that. I get the impression Android Auto is based on using proprietary software to restrict users." He links to this article: https://freedom-to-tinker.com/blog/dwallach/on-distracted-driving-and-required-phone-searches/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
I agree. If the distro cared about becoming free software, you would not need such a script--they would do it themselves. If they do not care enough, then they will have respositories containing non-free software. This would make them ineligible to become an FSF sanctioned officially free distro. We couldn't help them if we wanted to. They have to want to change. It is not as though they have never heard of free software! Now if you are asking why don't we create a free version of a particular distro, the answer is we did! We took Ubuntu and cleaned it of all the non-free software. Why would we want to do that again? We could use that time making this distro even better!

Re: [Trisquel-users] New York Wants To Know: Have You Been Texting And Driving?
This guy is just clueless. There are so many things wrong with his idea: * You can't get records of texting without cooperation by the phone's operating system. This includes both keeping the necessary records, and supporting whatever signals this hypothetical device sends, then actually telling the truth. Additionally, the phone would have to actually be able to connect to this hypothetical device. So unless you ban all phones which don't support and cooperate with this device, which would mean that many people would suddenly be breaking the law by not buying new phones they might not even be able to afford, it would be subverted easily. Hell, some phone manufacturers might use such subversion as a selling point. * Even if you manage to get this information, you still have to match it up to precise information about when the collision occurred, and that's not usually possible. There aren't video cameras in the sky recording everything that happens on the roads. Does he propose to change that? Even if you're fine with living in Orwell's nightmare, it would be a massive financial burden to put enough cameras on all of the streets to catch all collisions. * Got enough surveillance cameras all over the place to see where every single car is all the time, and always catch collisions? Well, you still have to manually inspect the footage to find the time of the collision, then input that time into this hypothetical device. It's not as simple as this guy makes it out to be. * Fixed all the technical problems? OK with living in Orwell's nightmare? Somehow managed to ban all phones that don't comply with this device? It's not going to work, anyway. The idea is to use fear to make people stop texting and driving. But this fear just isn't going to be present until an accident actually happens, because no one thinks they're going to be one of those people who get into an accident. At that point, this hypothetical device will either do nothing but bum the driver out a little bit if the penalty is low, or if the penalty is extremely high (like jail time), it will just be providing an incentive for drivers to find a way to destroy their phones rather than attending to matters that are actually important like making sure everyone is OK and possibly calling an ambulance. It's not even a difficult task; just find some water and pour it on the phone. Or even better, toss it out the window into a river or lake nearby.

Re: [Trisquel-users] "Ubuntu LTS: Many vulnerabilities despite long-term support"
No clue. But I've verified in a Trisquel Mini installation I have on a virtual machine; there are no lines including a "universe" section in /etc/apt/sources.list. Maybe this information is just stored somewhere?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
They are not non-free. They may contain non-free components whether by default or accessible thru the official repository.
[Trisquel-users] Re : "Ubuntu LTS: Many vulnerabilities despite long-term support"
But when you look at the list of packages in Synaptic, you do see that some come from main and some from universe. So where does that division come from if sources.list only mentions main?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who legally owns the Trisquel or 'Asociacion Trisquel'?
I am also not a lawyer or an accountant. I agree that paying salaries to employees that run a non-profit is no problem. If one of those employee's is the owner (and probably also either the President or CEO), there is nothing wrong. The only potential problem is if the salary is unreasonable. The basis for choosing a salary is the same as in a for profit business. It is based on what the employee can do for the company--what their labor is worth. If the salary is greater than or equal to the surplus, then the whole surplus should go to the salary. If the salary is less than the surplus and the salary is then increased to absorb the surplus, that could be a problem (again, if the previous salary has already been determined and if the surplus is more than a reasonable raise). For example let us say that a 1,000,000 salary is appropriate: last year you pay yourself 50,000 and the surplus is then 0. Next year you pay yourself 100,000 and the surplus is then 0. Next year you pay yourself 500,000 and the surplus is again 0. And so on. When the surplus is 1,000,001 then the salary is 1,000,000 and the surplus is 1. If next year the surplus is 3,000,000, then after the 1,000,000 salary is deducted as an expense, the surplus is 2,000,000 In other words, the employee (whether owner or not) should get an appropriate salary or be willing to work for less. I could see the argument that the owner should not be allowed to make that decision as he/she is biased. However, in the USA we have the IRS and you do not want to mess with them! They are incredibly powerful. They can throw you in jail if you evade income taxes. This means the owner's income is known and others would sue the owner for fraud if he/she could not justify the salary they are taking. More often than not, an owner/founder of a non-profit is doing the work because they love the cause and will tend to pay themselves less than they deserve (perhaps a reason why somebody other than the owner should determine his/her salary!) In this case, clearly Ruben was taking a big pay cut to work on Trisquel. $500/month if Ruben spends 2 hours per day on the project then he is paying himself less than $10/hour. A good programmer should make at least 5-10 times that much. Even if he took the whole 8,000 it would be much less than he should get paid. If he was doing it for the money he would need to get paid much much more. So, Thank you Ruben!!

Even if he 'doesn't think' that will happen, it probably will. Another collection for digital profiling.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquelize other non-Free GNU/Linux distributions
You can wish for magic all you want, but that doesn't make it possible. The way GNU/Linux distributions organize their software repositories, not to mention the basic structure of those repositories, varies dramatically. The process of removing proprietary software from Ubuntu is not the same as removing proprietary software from Mint, and it's even more different from the process of removing proprietary software from Arch. Additionally, the resulting systems are completely different. This is why single systems like these aren't based off of multiple distros; it would be impractical and confusing.

Re: [Trisquel-users] "Ubuntu LTS: Many vulnerabilities despite long-term support"
My point is that Canonical don't make this clear. Some person who decides to try Ubuntu is not going to look at the security team FAQ page. They would assume that there would be the main repository, supported for the 5 years as advertised. So Canonical should have some sort if disclaimer when people download it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Sourceforge requires a phone number for registering a project
jade...@openmailbox.org, Mér 27 Abr 2016 01:15:32 CEST: True, but it didn't say they record IP addresses. IP addresses are routinely logged by the system. This is not only usual, but also mandatory in most countries - so in case there's a criminal investigation going on, the connection can be traced to its source. And even so, that's a rather cumbersome method of finding someone's phone number. Yep, you're right. Know what is a less cumbersome method? Having already calculated a hash table for all possible telephone numbers. Taking into account the low cost of terabytes today, the storage cost would be cheap. That way any hashed phone number can be instantly matched to its plain number. "We don't store your phone number, only its hash" it's just lawyerspeak for "Yes, we definitely store your phone number". What else would they need the hashed number for? Re: [Trisquel-users] "Ubuntu LTS: Many vulnerabilities despite long-term support"
As a couple others have said, this is the whole reason for some packages being in a separate repository. Anything in "universe" is officially unsupported, which means not only is it not subject to the LTS support, it isn't even subject to the shorter support of any other Ubuntu releases. If it's a concern for you, Trisquel maintains these sections, so you can exclude the "universe" section from your sources.list if you want. But software in "universe" is usually not software that is likely to be a vector for an attack.

"Linux Mint uses it so it must be the best" seems to be the lime of argument on places like Reddit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] "Ubuntu LTS: Many vulnerabilities despite long-term support"
Yes, it is news. "Long term support" implies support for all the packages in Ubuntu for 5 years. Canonical does not say on their website "over 7000 packages supported for 5 years, but please note that many of the packages you might actually want to use do not receive support". I thought it was like Debian stable and each one had a maintainer. How are normal people supposed to know this?
