Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Docker on Trisquel
Also, @cmhobbs said on GNU Social that there are some questions about whether Docker is properly freedom-respecting. Can anyone provide further information/ links about this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
This is Dthello, the CDE splash screen. It shows the version of CDE when starting but I could not capture that, only the background.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New ReTux Release and a Level Making Competition
Oh, this'll be fun! Hopefully it'll bring over some good levels for that Bonus Set!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Docker on Trisquel
OK, thanks for the info. So you're advising against adding the Docker repo, is there any way to install and use Docker on Trisquel without adding their repo?
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
That Mofit theme looks authentic. It's good to know it's available. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
I don't know what the complications are secifically but this is what they say here. https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/LinuxBuild/ "CDE on Linux is not yet to the point of being simple to package for distribution or a relatively simple to compile from the source archive." Lack of interest or the port is not ready for primetime yet. I really like the look of Motif decorations. If you use a dock with Xfce, it will be functionally very similar. Remove the panel and start app from desktop (workplace) menu with the right click of the mouse. I wonder if the native apps dtterm and dtfile work without the full desktop in Xfce. I guess they need the mwm Motif window manager to work. I attached a file with the standard CDE XPM and XBM backdrops.
[Trisquel-users] New ReTux Release and a Level Making Competition
This is the announcement for the new release of ReTux: https://savannah.nongnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8550 And this is the announcement for the level making competition I'm running: https://savannah.nongnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8551 So, a lot of stuff: a new beta (which should be the last beta), a gratis demo version, a level editing guide, and a level making contest. The contest includes prize money for the winners as a little incentive to participate. :) I would like to find some additional judges for this contest if possible, so if anyone here is uninterested in entering the contest but would be interested in helping me judge entries, please let me know. :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
Do you have any idea why CDE is not packaged for Debian yet? There is a package called cde but it is something else. So I suppose you could call it cde-desktop?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
Maybe they are hoping to release another 'pure' computer and will use an Intel chip so now they will say "we tried".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
Yes. Perhaps a final admission that their goal was impossible. They've gone from "we can do this" to "Intel please do this."
Re: [Trisquel-users] Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
I understand. Kinda sad isn't it?
[Trisquel-users] Making chocolate-doom free = removing recommended packages?
The Chocolate Doom package at http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/chocolate-doom is currently sitting in the multiverse repository due to it recommending/suggesting non-free chocolate-heretic, chocolate-hexen, and chocolate-strife packages. In upstream Debian, it has been moved from contrib to main and the package currently for Ubuntu 16.04/Trisquel 8. Since this is free software and GPLv2, wouldn't removing the those recommendations/suggestions make it free software and can be considered to be added to Trisquel? Like a package helper that takes the source, recompiles it, and creates the .deb file without the recommendations/suggestions to those chocolate packages. I'm curious if that would be accepted if it was that easy to modify the .deb file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
The GTK theme is xfce-stellar, in case you are curious. It has become somewhat more to my liking recently.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
The package xfwm-themes provides two themes similar to what I was looking for. The first is called mofit, clearly a sort of play-on-words. The second is called platinum, and is similar in function. I have vowed to use the GNU tiling wallpaper wherever possible from now on.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Clang error. How to set libc++ as default for Clang?
Follow the instructions: https://github.com/google/certificate-transparency/blob/master/README.md
[Trisquel-users] Re : Buck up using rsync
Single quotes can be used too. The difference with double quotes mostly matters to people writing Shell scripts (inside single quotes, *nothing* is interpreted; inside double quotes $ and backquotes are interpreted). But yes, auto-completion is the fastest. I believe it is possible to actually change the name (the original question). E.g., through "Disks" in the "System Settings": select the disk, the partition, click the icon below with two gears, choose "Edit Partition..." (or is it "Edit Filesystem..."?) and define a name/label.

Who knows when 19th century tapestry or wallpapers are all the rage again.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
Yes, I thing so, probably this is what would happen. But anyway, we must to tray!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
Intel will ignore any such petition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Yes, this is why I asking. Today, we are not so limited with today hardware like 15-20 years ago. I untestood, that all you want is nostalgie over saming some Mb of memory.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Docker on Trisquel
I use Trisquel for servers for many years just fine. I definitely recommend it over other GNU/Linux distros! For adding other repos, BEWARE! The challenge with going to other places is that they've not been reviewed & vetted by the Trisquel team as being free of freedom problems (even small, tiny, microscopic ones that someone might not even pick up on without careful examination.) So: BEWARE!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
Purism had the means to produce a fully-free computer, possibly with an ARM, MIPS or LowRisc CPU. They are just doing this for PR. Maybe I will sign it, probably not. It isn't worth the paper it is written on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
What about Tails & Whonix? Are this distros securest than Trisquel? If yes, how to get this security in Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Here's a screenshot of a 32x32 backdrop, transparent. Looks even better than the 48x48.
[Trisquel-users] Petition for Intel to Release an ME-less CPU design
Hi, this post was originally published in the spanish forum by trinux. I just wanted to share it with you for more people to know about it: Hi everyone The guys from Purism had started a petition for Intel to release a CPU without Intel Management Engine. In 2014 the FSF protested this technology: https://fsf.org/blogs/community/active-management-technology In Libreboot's FAQ you can read about the inconvenience of this CPU: https://libreboot.org/faq/#intelme In summary, the Intel Management Engine and its applications are a backdoor with total access to and control over the rest of the PC. The ME is a threat to freedom, security, and privacy. Even though Purism has been criticized over the years, I think is worth it to support this petition. It's been years since Intel started to shift towards evil privative software. ¡Let's all sign and share the campaign!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
I converted that to XBM (X BitMap) and reduced resolution to 48x48. It looks marvellous through a green background.
[Trisquel-users] Installing Docker on Trisquel
Has anybody successfully run Docker containers on Trisquel? Can anybody tell me whether these instructions for installing Docker it on Ubuntu will work for 64-bit Trisquel 7? https://docs.docker.com/engine/installation/linux/ubuntulinux/ I'm aware Trisquel is built on top of Ubuntu Trusty (14.04 LTS), which according to the documentation is supported by Docker. The kernel on release was 3.13, and uname -r confirms that's the version I'm running, so that's supported. So far so good. The documentation tells me to add their APT repo. Is there a version of Docker already available in the Trisquel repos? If so, what's the package name? Documentation also tells me that Trusty needs a linux-image-extra package, and suggests this command: $ sudo apt-get install linux-image-extra-$(uname -r) Will this work with the Trisquel repo? Another more general question, is it recommended to use Trisquel as a server OS? Is there a fully libre distro that would be better for server use? I'm aware Debian is widely used as a server and I could use that without any non-free add-ons.

Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
I think there should be Motif look-a-like themes for Xfce on Xfce.org.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
I recently tried FVWM. The Window borders are similar to CDE. I like it well enough. Maybe I will stick with that instead.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need a reliable VoIP soulution with video.
Well, it really depends if you are going to set it up by yourself, or you plan to tell your parents to do it. If you will do the installation, Tox, Ring and maybe Linphone are now very good choices. If you need to let your parents to do the initial work, forget the above programs and try WebRTC, like, https://meet.jit.si/ or even Firefox Hello.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Here's one.
[Trisquel-users] Need a reliable VoIP soulution with video.
I'm planning to install a VoIP program with video capabilities to my parents PC. I'm living abroad so i have to do it remotely(what do you recommed?).They currently run Mint 17.2(gonna try to move them to Trisquel). I know they're using Skype because of the people they know,so i need a easy/cross-platform solution to move them gradually to a free solution. P.s i've tried Jitsi one year ago with no luck.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
pls post screenshot w/ CDE.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
I am going to install it tonight. Thanks for pointing me there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Wow, it's great. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
I think you could call it OStalgie. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostalgie Rather in the sense of harking back to first experiences with computers and GUIs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Why not to use a normal wallpaper? why to use a retro wallpaper and GUI?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
I made a GNU tiling wallpaper. It was actually quite hard to get it 'just right'. I hope you all like it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] can I delete a post that I have started?
You can't truly delete anything posted here because the forum is connected to a mailing list. Edits to old posts do not show up there due to how the mailing list works.
Re: [Trisquel-users] hey, has anyone noticed the wine part of the trisquel repository has become bugged again?
Try apt-get -f install Then try and install again. When I have used the Synaptic Package Manager I have found that selecting large numbers of packages to install/remove/upgrade can lead to confusion somehow. It will say "you have broken packages" sometimes.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Here's a Solaris backdrop or two.
[Trisquel-users] gnulinux systems sync with cross over ethernet cable?
If the post is not about free software then ignore it or tell how to delete it. I want to move files in the home folder from an ubuntu computer to a debian 8 computer via lan cable cross over cable. I get a permission denied message. I have asked the question on a couple of gnulinux forums. No answers. Either because it is difficult or nobody makes ethernet cross over cable connections. I have marked folders with folder sharing. Set folder permissions. Set the static ip addresses. The shared folders display on the network on the debian computer. If I want to move files, I get a persmission denied message. Suggestions? There is software called samba server configuration. Is it an option? I tested it and I got a permission denied message.

[Trisquel-users] can I delete a post that I have started?
You cannot delete a post you started? Why not? You can edit a comment you posted, you cannot delete it? Why not? If I write a post and afterward get to know, that it is against forum rules, I want to delete it.
