Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
It's not that it was naive. If you can't reliably foresee what the ratios will be it would be naive not to over-account for things. Not the other way around. The reality is we really do need to get to $150,000ish number IMHO. In fact ideally it would be a lot higher. Even though it may not prevent things from moving forward it could slow things down. Remember that 100,000 units is a small production run in the industry. Lets not forget a lot of time and money has already been put into this project. We need to get it to a point where it can stand on its own two feet. Being reliant on essentially the good will of a single entity isn't going to achieve the results we need for it to really succeed (by succeed I mean that it'll be self-sustaining and future devices/cards/etc will follow... we don't want it to be a one-off device... if it is it's the project will have been a failure). This isn't Ubuntu. We don't have Mark Shuttleworth's endless supply of cash to keep trying. I don't exactly see anybody with a ton of cash in the free software world that's putting out to fund these types of projects.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
onpon4 is correct. There is no ARM port of Trisquel as Ubuntu discontinued its ARM build back around 8.04 I believe. That makes it a tad bit difficult. It would probably make sense to do a Debian-based version of Trisquel as there are Debian ports for ARM. The way NAND flash on these devices work is such that there is not a controller with proprietary firmware (this is how a SSD works, but really all modern drives including the spinning disk kind have proprietary firmware in there controllers). Thus with the on-board raw nand there is no firmware. This means extra steps are ideal to prevent killing the nand. There are what I'll refer to as wear levelling file systems to compensate even though they are rarely used in practice. This is in part probably why microsd/USB flash drives/and internal nand flash has a particularly high failure rate. Many SSD drives also have a high failure rate. However there is also something called SLC nand flash. Unlike MLC nand flash it doesn't have some of the problems that MLC nand flash has. It's also much more expensive and used in industrial environments where things can't fail. We're going to try and get SLC nand. We're hoping this combined with a wear levelling file system will increase the longevity of the on-board storage. If it ends up not being adequate enough for a laptop (and even if it is) we'll be investigating a USB to SATA adapter (or similar) so that you could still stick in a traditional hard drive. Many of the USB to SATA chips are garbage so we've got some work ahead of us. There supposedly are some decent ones though...

How is this trolling? English may not be your primary language and it shows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
> Also, why isn't Trisquel one of the suggested OS? Not possible. Trisquel doesn't support ARM.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
But still, Trisquel is much more user-friendly than Arch or Parabola.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
Quick question about the NAND/storage: I've read above that there's a driver developed for it. I was reading this thread (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/libre-storage-device), and I was wondering if the EOMA68 (with its included storage) qualifies as a libre storage device? Also, why isn't Trisquel one of the suggested OS? Not trying to troll or anything, just curious about the thought process.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
What do you suggest for example?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
I'm not really sure about the general financial situation of Trisquel but wouldn't it be an option to create a "bounty" program to help fix urgent issues? It could, for example, work as follows: User A is eager to see feature X and is willing to pay 10 euros for seeing it in Trisquel. User B wants this feature even more and adds 100 euros to this bounty. Developer D (who might or might not be Ruben) then implements the feature and gets the money. Doesnt't this sound like a plan?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre storage device?
Leah from Minifree directed me to this page about firmware on HDDs/SSDs. Some great info there: https://libreboot.org/faq/#firmware-hddssd
Re: [Trisquel-users] can't restore bookmarks with .json file
Hmm, probably the json wasn't saved properly by your PC, try open it with a text editor (gedit) and see the text in there, so as the worst option you should have the urls there..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
Distribution Release: Parabola GNU/Linux-libre 2016.07.27 Gents, I downloaded this version and updated into one of my desktops and honestly, it is real nice. Even do I use using Debian libre version, but compare to trisquel is way more updated, and still part of the FSF family available free OS. Notes from Distrowatch. André Fabian Silva Delgado has announced the release of a new version of Parabola GNU/Linux-libre, a distribution built from Arch Linux, but repackaged to include "libre" software only. The new release, version 2016.07.27, comes in three variants - "Main" (CLI-only installation medium), "MATE desktop" (a live DVD featuring the MATE desktop environment) and "TalkingParabola" (installation CD adapted for visually impaired users). >From the release announcement: "New install medium 2016.07.27. ChangeLog: fixed read and write permissions in $HOME folder; added instant messaging and video calling applications mate-extra, linphone, qtox; added octopi-cachecleaner, octopi-notifier and octopi-repoeditor since it is needed for octopi that is our powerful Pacman frontend by default; added lightdm as default display manager; added sudo by default to allow members of group wheel to execute any command" Parabola GNU/Linux-libre is an unofficial "libre" variant of Arch Linux. It aims to provide a fully free (as in freedom) distribution based on the packages of the Arch Linux project, with packages optimised for i686 and x86_64 processors. The goal is to give the users complete control over their systems with 100% "libre" software. Parabola GNU/Linux-libre is listed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) as a fully free software distribution. Besides a standard installation CD image, the project also provides a live/rescue DVD image with MATE as the default desktop environment

Stranger Things is definitely worth it. And Ruben deserves a break!

He doesn't reply directly because he's managing his personal life, like all of us do, and also because he is working for the FSF. I would like to ask you to prove that he has an active account on Netflix before making such statements.

Re: [Trisquel-users] can't restore bookmarks with .json file
errata: I had copied the bookmarks.json file to .mozilla/abrowser/7lotmd0a.default/bookmarkbackups/ and the file is there but still haven't success. Nothing new happens!
Re: [Trisquel-users] can't restore bookmarks with .json file
Hello all again; first of all many thanks for your patient and time responding to my questions. This is what I have done so far: ->I have not the problem of mounting or unmounting a pendrive. I had that problem but the forum once again was so kind to help me in that aspect too. Many many thanks to the magnific forum! In fact I have the *.json file copied to my Desktop folder, so I can use it from there ( it could be a problem of communication with the pendrive so I want to foil that problem too). ->which is incredible is the fact that I had done those steps that I told in other occasion and had resulted completely and with absolute no problems. -> I have the bookmarks toolbar visible. -> By this time I had tried to copy the bookmarks.json file to .mozilla/abrowser/7lotmd0a.default/bookmarkbackups/ and still haven't success. Nothing new happens! What I am doing bad??? I don't comprehend! If the forum could help me and have the time for it I would much very much appreciate that. Many many thanks to the intire community and keep up the excellent work! Hugs to all

Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
Great to hear this update. Looks like the firefox job built correctly. But the package hasn't been pushed to the master repository yet. The trisquel-repo-update job still hasn't been fixed...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
Great to hear this! I think even monthly updates would be wonderful. I hope toutatis as well will receive some sorely needed browser love.
