Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel screenshot has been replaced by gNewSense on front page of gnu.org
The idea is to rotate the picture every now and again. Ideally to make a gallery of screenshots showing off different distros. Also to feature a distro on the front page "for a while" when they make a new release.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel screenshot has been replaced by gNewSense on front page of gnu.org
Probably no particular reason. The screenshot was updated and they happened to choose GNewSense instead of Trisquel. I think the real question is: why on Earth are they still listing BLAG?
[Trisquel-users] Re : screen resolution issue
The kernel drives the hardware. If the GNU/Linux-libre distributions you are referring to use a more recent version of the kernel, then you should try to update Trisquel's kernel: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel If you have an Intel processor that includes a graphical chipset, physically removing the video card would give you improved performances (faster video decoding, 3D acceleration, etc.) and a smaller energy consumption. Avoid AMD cards next time...
[Trisquel-users] screen resolution issue
Hi everyone, apparently, Trisquel 7 doesn't recognize my graphics adapter (ATI Radeon Xpress 1100), because it only gives my two resolutions, 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768, along with a very bad refresh rate that hurts my eyes every time I look at, I looked in the forum, many people had the same issue, and used a command called (cvt something something) to set the required resolution manually, what's really weird is that all of the other Linux-libre kernel distros are fine, so what's wrong with Trisquel? any help? respectfully
Re: [Trisquel-users] Magnifier that follows your mouse around Kmag [solved]
OK and thank you. I got kmag from synaptic but when I'm feeling up to it, I'll follow your instructions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Magnifier that follows your mouse around Kmag [solved]
Thank you. I'd love to learn this stuff. When I'm feeling adventurous I may try it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How simple/complex is your installation process?
One more reason to try the backports, plus I'm not sure I'm ready for Sid (or that I need it). Thanks for this! Well, with firejail/apparmor/grsec, or firejail only, is it really needed to disable Javascript? I mean sure, some data can still be stolen (still in a limited way), and it would allow some pages to work better.
[Trisquel-users] Re : startx : stuck in a loop
A noob like me learns from threads like this :) .. So Hack,Magik,Tramp --Cheers big ears!
Re: [Trisquel-users] startx : stuck in a loop
I need to set my /home folder so I don't have to move it next time. it surely will shorten the reinstall. Thanks for the tip!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Magnifier that follows your mouse around Kmag [solved]
I wasn't going to spend so much time in this, but I was happy to see that some people like Misty were interested on my code. So I ended up improving the code to the end. I'm Up loading my bash file which can be downloaded and given run privileges. Here are some of the improvements I made: - It waits for kmag to load just the necessary time needed. Before, one second some times was not enough. - It automatically fits on your screen without having to tamper with the values. - You can change the the position of kmag in the screen to bottom, left, right or top by just changing a single value. - The code can be use with the kmag version on the repos and up. - It automatically gives a F12 keyboard press every time kmag opens which makes it go to mouse mode when started. - Checks if all the necessary packages (kmag, xdotool, wmctrl and x11-utils) are installed and gives you a warning if not. - Starts kmag with menu and tool bars hidden. - Hides the scroll bars of kmag out of the screen or they are left out of the reserved area so that they are cover by the maximized windows. I might made a video on how to use it, although is the easiest thing to do. Just download the file, give it run permissions, and add it to your starting programs. You can also run it from terminal or just by double clicking in the file if you configure nautilus correctly. That's what the video I might do would be about anyway. See you around guys.
Re: [Trisquel-users] startx : stuck in a loop
Well, you tried to help, which I am thankful for, and you helped me several times before as well :) And in this instance, I can learn to not blindly reinstall out of impatience. So thanks for this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel screenshot has been replaced by gNewSense on front page of gnu.org
There are many fully free distros.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel screenshot has been replaced by gNewSense on front page of gnu.org
today I noticed on the front page of https://gnu.org, Trisquel screenshot has been replaced by gNewSense. Any person knows the reason?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How simple/complex is your installation process?
>Firejail not being even in Debian's repo, I'll pass for now. Firejail is in: sid, testing and **jessie-backports** I installed it from backports, it's great, the thing can sandbox anything and it couldn't be easier to use. >Do you have better ideas for this? Specially for sandboxing the browser With the firefox profile already tuned very well in /etc/firejail it is as simple as: firejail firefox >malicios script https://noscript.net >have access to more than the browser Here is what my firejailed seamonkey has access to in /home: /home/.config/dconf /home/.config/gtk-2.0 /home/Downloads/ /home/.mozilla /home/.cache/mozilla/

I have installed so far just Ublock, I hope I'll be satisfied wich I trust I will. It's so good to trust you are there brothers. many thanks again.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't install add-ons in Abrowser
Many many thanks from the heart to both. It is refreshing to know that when one is in trouble someone on the community can kindly help. I hope one day I have the knoledge to do so, as well. Many many thanks, an hug to all!
Re: [Trisquel-users] How simple/complex is your installation process?
Ok, So here's my list again: - full disk encryption is a bit advanced (partitionning, LVM, switching to a tty to modify GRUB), but accessible to me (minus the keyfile to avoid typing the passphrase twice). Otherwise, encrypting home and swap should be a relative breeze for a beginner. - Sandboxing programs from the web: Firejail not being even in Debian's repo, I'll pass for now. Apparmor seems rather complicated. Same for a virtual machine, or Wine if it can work that way for native programs. Grsecurity is clearly overkill (might be worth it for a server though). - kernel update is only needed if some hardware is not supported bu the current one. - re-installing programs: exporting a list from Synaptic looks like the easiest way. but before that, I needed to install with apt-get, and the option --no install recommends (after getting my ethernet interface running in DHCP): - Wicd for wifi (less headaches with a GUI sometimes) - Synaptic - xorg of course - some window manager/desktop environment - Backup: DéjàDup or Back in Time are most likely the easiest programs. I guess I'll partition a huge external drive so I can have a backup partition, and a storage partition for personal data I don't access every day (and ecrypt the whole thing of course). - Config files: It's OK to just keep the Home folder with all these, but there are also tons of weird text files that accumulate which I most likely don't need. So with this one, I do it by hand for now. Do you have better ideas for this? Specially for sandboxing the browser (I might need JavaScript on occasionally, but I don't want a malicios script to have access to more than the browser (not even the bookmarks actually). The rest is pretty much aesthetics/workflow preferences, which is personal to each user. For example, I like my display to be minimal, and I want to use the keyboard instead of the mouse whenever possible, and that's what I did. It implies learning a few shortcuts per program, but it's an investment. Plus there's always the man command.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How simple/complex is your installation process?
I found this to be interesting: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1712826 That means all packages are minimal. But let's say that for some reason, I nstall a package with apt-get, will it appear in the exported list?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gnuinos
My Toshiba laptop doesn't need any private firmware. You can connect to eth0 running (within /usr/lib/simple-netaid/bin): # backend 9 eth0 or to wlan, running: # backend 1 ESSID PWD being ESSID your wifi network, and PWD the password. Cheers :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gnuinos
I forgot: If you give a try to gnuinos server, it includes the backend of simple-netaid. Run: # cd /usr/lib/simple-netaid/bin # backend --help
Re: [Trisquel-users] AbiWord: Times New Roman?
This move to interprete "Times New Roman" and replace it for something else is a great idea, although it shifts the attention away from what must be really corrected: the terms used in document formatting standards worldwide. The standards organizations worldwide should use either one of these recommendations: a) Use generic font family names (like "serif", "mono"/"monospace", etc.). Thus favoring neutrality (not a good idea since we're talking about text fonts, which are functional data). b) Recommend free/libre text fonts. Every time I share a file which uses free/libre text fonts, I explain to the recipients the importance of these and why the standards-making organizations are wrong. Of course, there are standards-making organizations that do-not make such recommendations, and for those I leave my gratitude. Although the other organizations that comply with such standards also adapt these to their needs, and most of the time, a non-existing requirement might become an "existing requirement" in the process. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
It is possible to run OpenWRT on the Beaglebone Black. Perhaps it would be possible to use the Beaglebone or similar ARM embedded single board computer with LibreCMC (if ports exist, or indeed OpenWRT itself)? This is something I'm interested in doing myself as it turns out.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GPT on BIOS & full disk encryption (with boot)?
I do not think a BIOS boot partition can be encrypted since it contains part of the bootloader (and only that).
