Re: [Trisquel-users] Email provider: riseup.net OR disroot.org?
That is a good question, I looked just now and it is disroot.org that is copylefted.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
So icedove isn't at all bloated? I use iceweasel with a few addons, noscript being an obvious one of them given that it is like giving the tank armor part of that which is firefox. Or in my case iceweasel. Hyperbola has iceweasel package that is hardened which I use. ;) ps, emulation can eat up battery quickly under some circrumstances. Such as mupen64plus or mgba and desmume obviously. I stopped using them though a while ago.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
>The only thing I use my system that is not lightweight is my web browser, email client, and sometimes emulation of sorts including dosbox. Browser (Firefox) is the only bloat here (if we don't count the TorBB that is). Light software FTW \o/

Anyway. Awesome, where's that list? > By the way, you never specified what you use macOS for Never mind about that, I just followed some random guide for triple booting, because I want Windows (well only Warcraft) and GNU/Linux. The MacOS I am not using, it was just part of a guide I was following. Anyway thank you for all the help, it's really appreciated :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
> I was following the recipe on the first link you gave me, and to > choose between those two was the last step, but allright, this > method is better? After $ wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key $ sudo apt-key add Release.key $ sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ it says "On Linux Mint 17.x, the last line should be the following:... On Linux Mint 18.x, the last line should be the following:..." You aren't using Linux Mint, so you should leave that last line as is: "sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/; > and then what? :) and then Mason has to keep copying and pasting instructions for you :) $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-stable Wine should be installed at that point. The next step is using it to run Warcraft. Helping you with that would be against community guidelines, because unlike Wine it is proprietary software. However, when you must run a Windows program in general, whether the program is free or proprietary, it is better to use Wine than Micro$oft Winblows. These links should get you started. https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#Installing_and_Running_Windows_Applications https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide I also encourage you to look at onpon4's list of libre games for GNU/Linux. By the way, you never specified what you use macOS for, but I have a friend who is currently migrating one task at a time from macOS to GNU/Linux, and he has found GNOME to be somewhat similar to Aqua (the desktop environment of macOS), so as a macOS user you may also find it intuitive. To try it: (1) run 'sudo apt install gnome' (2) log out (3) at your display manager (login screen) click the little icon next to your username (4) select "GNOME' from the menu that drops down (5) log in signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
I was following the recipe on the first link you gave me, and to choose between those two was the last step, but allright, this method is better? Is it sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ and then what? :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : Email provider: riseup.net OR disroot.org?
What is copylefted? The JavaScript of the webmail?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
Actually, its not hard to partition the disks. One is for root, one is for swap. say, 4GB for swap. the rest goes to root. make sure the root partition is bootable, and the swap one has linux swap/solaris type. Now if you want encryption, that is much harder. it took me a while to figure that out... ;) Although, only with following the Full Disk Encryption Libreboot guide. ;) Incidently though, encryption is highly recommended when at all possible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Okay, its not really mature to thumb up your own post. Or to downvote everyone you disagree with. but yeah... you just make yourself look silly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Email provider: riseup.net OR disroot.org?
Disroot is the best at the moment. I wish I knew their exact license though. Still, its copyleft so its good.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
I just like the idea of a stable, secure, lightweight os. The only thing I use my system that is not lightweight is my web browser, email client, and sometimes emulation of sorts including dosbox.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
As far as I know, those GNU/Linux distributions are not 100% free software and not even trying.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
It is another terminal-based front-end to the package manager. Like 'apt-get' and 'apt-cache' ('aptitude' provides the functionalities of both these commands, ad more).
[Trisquel-users] Re : uruk gnu/linux 2.0 beta-2
I suspect you do not understand what "running out of RAM" means. Probably an English problem. Every program you execute uses some RAM. If you execute many programs, or programs using much RAM (maybe because of memory leaks), then all the RAM may be in use. Once a program tries to store something more, it cannot: there is no room. That is what "running out of RAM" means. Without a swap partition/file, the kernel kills a process as soon as a program tries to store something but there is no more available RAM. Maybe a program in which you have been using for hours without saving your work! With a swap partition/file, there is still room: on the swap, i.e., on the disk. No program is killed but the system becomes unbearably slow (because the disk is about 100 times slower than the RAM). That lets you the time to save your work and close the program(s) of your choice to free some RAM and get back to a fast system.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Email provider: riseup.net OR disroot.org?
It is common practice. Whether it is acceptable is up to you. If you do not use end-to-end encryption (typically GPG), the email provider can read your emails. Some providers propose to store your emails encrypted: see https://posteo.de/en/site/encryption for instance and notice (a completely different point) that Posteo's webmail does not rely on any proprietary JavaScript according to https://www.fsf.org/resources/webmail-systems That makes a difference if the police/justice asks for your emails: a provider such as Posteo cannot possibly give them. Depending on the legislation, the provider may actually be forbidden to to not be able to give your emails. It is not the case of Germany's legislation (Posteo is located in Germany). Storing encrypted emails (that can only be decrypted through the password of the user) makes a difference if the server is cracked too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Come on.. Deblobbed Buguntu 8 will be ready in a year or so.. What's the hurry? After all it's only been 700 days since it's base came out :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] uruk gnu/linux 2.0 beta-2
Just clarifying and finalizing, systems run on hard drives dnt matter with how much swaps or without, but systems run on RAM will be happy to be under more swaps, right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
Just use the one for Ubuntu: sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] Email provider: riseup.net OR disroot.org?
Disroot's privacy policy states that all emails, unless encrypted (with gpg for example), are stored on their servers in plain-text. Is this common practice and/or acceptable?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Nope, it is quite useful - this thread is raising the awareness. Trisquel is in a deep trouble, and to get out of this situation 1st of all we should admit this trouble and don't bury head in the sand
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
"On Linux Mint 17.x, the last line should be the following: sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ trusty main' On Linux Mint 18.x, the last line should be the following: sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ xenial main' Which one is fitted for my purpose?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Even if you'll give a small donation of a million dollars to Trisquel, it will still be deep behind the Ubuntu. I'm seeing so many +100 euro donations but its' just a waste of money and despite all these donation there is still no Trisquel 8. Donation is an investment, and in this case its' a very poor one
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
Please add QubesOS , Void Linux and Artix Linux. QubesOS = secure OS where the processes could be isolated at the independent virtual machines , but it has systemd. Void Linux = runit instead of systemd, and overall an excellent distro. Artix Linux = Arch Linux with OpenRC as default instead of systemd
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
What is the aptitude command, and what does it do?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
The "is not going to be installed" error message can sometimes be fixed by explicitly telling the package manager to install the package it's complaining about. Or at least, you can figure out why it's not doing so automatically. I like to use the aptitude command. When it detects oddities and conflicts, it asks you what you want to do about it and presents a few solutions. What does "sudo aptitude install wine1.6" (or if you want to avoid making changes, "aptitude -s install wine1.6") give you?
