Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with DTLAPC14

2019-02-26 Thread mason
Don't mess around with JACK when you don't yet have ALSA working. Like
Pulseaudio, JACK is a sound server that controls and relies on ALSA.
Pulseaudio is intended to work out-of-the box for basic desktop usage. JACK
is more advanced (i.e. for professional audio production) and requires more
configuration. I know a lot of musicians, so I frequently set up JACK on
people's laptops, and every new sound card I encounter is a unique
pain-in-the-adventure. Installing JACK has the potential to break sound if it
was already working, but if ALSA already wasn't working then JACK won't make
things any better. If you're a musician, I'll help you through installing and
configuring JACK *after* we get ALSA working. Otherwise you're better off
with ALSA+Pulseaudio or (if you don't use GNOME or a Firefox-based browser)
just ALSA.

I've seen many cases where these things worked with just ALSA but not with
JACK+ALSA. Pulseaudio+ALSA has worked on the dozen or so laptops on which
I've install Trisquel 8, but I have heard of people having problems with it.
For now lets keep it simple and just get ALSA working.

Purge ALSA, Pulseaudio, and JACK. Reinstall *just* ALSA. Run "alsamixer" and
try all of the available devices. Don't test audio through Abrowser, because
Firefox-derivatives no longer work without Pulseaudio. Instead play an audio
or video file through your preferred media player.

~/.profile does contain these lines

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin directories
PATH="$HOME/bin:$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

but I am pretty sure that I did not add them. I just booted into a live
Trisquel ISO and ~/.profile contains the same lines, and the output of "echo
$PATH" includes /home/trisquel/bin and /home/trisquel/.local/bin

Did you perhaps upgrade to Trisquel 8 from Trisquel 7? Maybe the default
~/.profile only contains these lines in Trisquel 8.

In any case, it seems I should not assume that everyone has these directories
in their path.

Looks like Magic Banana has answered your questions already.

Since writing the post you replied to, I've written some scripts to do what I

A1. It is indeed what the command does. I believe chaosmonk suggested that
directory because he has ~/local/bin listed in his PATH variable. At least,
that is what I get from "After this you can run "icecat" in a terminal to
launch Icecat". But I actually believe he added that path. 'echo $PATH'
does not include ~/local/bin on my system.

A2. It creates/overwrites the file ~/.local/bin/icecat with the line
"/home/$USER/icecat/icecat". In this way executing that file will execute
/home/$USER/icecat/icecat (the shell will first substitute $USER with your
login).

The concern is over patents. The FSF doesn't require endorsed distros to do
anything in particular with regard to those. See "Patents" in

https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html

This is also a good discussion on the topic before proceeding further:

Try purging pulseaudio but *not* ALSA and see if you can get sound to work.

When you have a huge chunk of output to paste in the forum, using pastebin or
something like it can help keep the thread readable.

Hey guys,

I was looking for an IDE and found Geany in the repository. I visited the web
site and downloaded the lastest source distribution(geany-1.34.1) -> link
here : https://www.geany.org/Download/Releases

I opened a terminal and typed ./configure and got an error saying something
like "gtk-2.0 is missing".

I typed sudo apt install libgtk-2.0 and noticed a bunch of libmono was
installed with it.

Also the apt install downloaded and installed about 147 certificates :

This is excellent!

I have some questions for you.

Q 1.
Do the $ mkdir ~/.local/bin-command make a folder/directory called "bin"
inside the .local folder/dir inside the "home" folder/dir? And if that's what
it does; any specific reason(s) for why u suggest to do this as the first
step?

Q 2.
What exactly is it the $ echo "/home/$USER/icecat/icecat >
~/.local/bin/icecat-command does?

I truthfully agree, but evidence I found here may or not be relevant:

https://suckless.org/sucks/systemd/

But regardless, I understand people can be set in their ways.

It was around when I discovered devuan and used it listened to their
arguments, and found systemd to be questionable...

When I heard about the fedora and ubuntu systemd forks failing I thought
systemd wasn't an issue. But somehow the devuan fork still is being worked
on, etc... Long story short, people need to hear both sides of the argument.

if anyone has a counter argument for that link, feel free to show it to me.

I believe one of the arguments for systemd is that it makes developers have
an easier job, I would like to see though a detailed list on one web page to
compare to see what it looks like.

like the link above, only with systemd...

Anyways I am getting off topic, this is probably not the place to discuss
this.

I do agree with you pyraman, but maybe we should discuss this on a different
forum to minmize the flaming on the irritation both sides have for each
other.

Some people on this forum respectfully love systemd after all.

Not sure why, but it is what it is.
